    This is the 4th year I have participated in the Maple Leaf Gravel Grind and I love it! Fantatstic event! It is a beatiful area and money raised from the event goes to support great organizations. There is also an awesome fall festival the day of the event as well as a local brewery that has unbeleivable food and drinks. I am bummed I didn't finish but in the end, I'm not sure I had another 13 miles in me. My hands were SO cold and hurt bad. I have raced my bike in all sorts of differnt conditions and have always finished but being cold and wet do not mix well for me. I believe the temps were actually around 34 or 35 when it started raining and as soon as my hands got wet, it was the beginning of the end. I am still proud of my efforts and proud of Kim for battling.

    love the addition of the KU win at the end Rock Chalk. No shame in the DNF. Cold and wet are two things no one can enjoy

      Being there to watch the end of that game was a blast and the food was SO good. Wet and cold hits different lol

    You're a beast, dude. You say you couldn't have been out there for another hour in the cold and wet, but I guarantee you would have finished the 70 if not for the wrong turn. We go through so many high and low points out there during these ultra distance events. This wasn't a DNF on the 70, this was an "Extra Spicy 40." Call it the Heinz 57 route. Keep crushing it, brother. HUGE kudos to Kim for knocking out that 40!!! Two very tough days on the bikes.

      I appreciate the kind words and encouragement! Maybe I could have. And if I would have stayed with that turn and not turned back with the group, I might have finished because I simply wouldn't have known how to get back lol. I will say this, my hands were in rough shape. I'm not sure how easy it is to get hyperthermia, but another hour might have put me close to that point. I was wrecked at the end.

    I would have dropped out too 😎. And at that bar I would have ordered an extra large Caesar salad and the largest Pepsi they had 🙂.

    I hope that rider has a full recovery. A wrong turn when your freezing is nature's way of saying game over man.

      I have heard from a few ppl that he is going to be ok. Broken ankle, apparently. I imagine there is going to be a toll this takes on him mentally, but I think he is pretty tough. He is a high-level racer. He will persevere.
      So, I actually said that wrong in the video. I was ahead of a group of 5 riders. My GPS was actually right, but after I turned, I saw the group go straight. I yelled at them, but they kept going. I thought they were on the 70 and my GPS was wrong. When I caught back up, I learned they were on the 40. I then learned it was only 4 or 5 miles till the finish, and my hands were not ok. I wasn't about to turn around at that point. So, I rode into town with them. This was for the best, though. I couldn't have been out there another hour. I've never not finished any race. Unbound 200 in mud on a tandem, extreme heat, wind, midsouth mud year...but being wet and freezing cold is different.

    Scientifically speaking, 38 F and rain are perfect for hypothermia.

      @TysRides  Před 7 měsíci

      Yea, I was worried about that. I said it was 40 in the video when I actually think it was closer to 35 or 36. I was absolutely miserable by the end. When I took my gloves off in that bathroom, my hands were burning.

    I stick to cyclocross this time of year... can put up with anything for less than an hour. Looked like brutal conditions. The old bathroom warmup... been there. 🤣No shame in DNF on a day like that. We do this for fun.

      Yep. It was rough. As soon as the water saturated my gloves, I was screwed.

    I rode yesterday and got caught in a rain in similar temperatures, my hands were numb for almost two hours after the ride, from gloves being wet and cold- lame stuff for sure….

    Just did 65 in Lawrence last sunday and it was snowing/sleeting. I kind of loved it, though. Nice vid!
    PS: I'm really hoping that kid is okay. People were saying that he was in the hospital but not in critical condition on Sunday. Have you heard anything?

    • @TysRides
      @TysRides  Před 7 měsíci

      I just heard that his ankle was broken. I don't really know him, but I know he is one of the best young racers around. Very talented. So I assume he is a very tough kid.
