- G.I Joe Explored - Did you know that COBRA was temporarily commanded by an entity whose genetic material was derived from some of history's most legendary leaders? Dr. Mindbender developed Serpentor as the leader of the terrorist group COBRA. In order to build this being, COBRA combed the world for traces of Vlad Tepes, Rasputin, Napoleon Bonaparte, Julius Caesar, Hannibal, Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun, and Alexander the Great. He was never meant to be Cobra Commander's replacement. He was supposed to be a more iconic figure to motivate the troops. The intention was for Cobra Commander to retain his power.

In the 1986 version of G.I. Joe, the Marvel comic original edition, he wasn't cruel to his fellow Cobra soldiers. He was more of a visionary and dedicated leader to them. That's what pissed Cobra Commander off. The first 2 or 3rd issue, he battled against the Joes in Springfield. One of Cobra soldiers went down in front of him. He picked him up and said "we don't leave our brothers to die nor leave them like animals on the field" Something to that extent. He was for the welfare of the soldiers. Down the line that led to the 1st Cobra Civil War. The cartoon put him in a very opposite light. I usually go with the character personalization based on original gospel canon, which is Marvels.
They made him more like Attila the Hun on the cartoon. In the comics they made him more like genghis Kahn.
thank you, i am trying to learn more about this character. this helps because i noticed a conflict of information.
But this puts it into better perspective.
This i command 😅😅😅
He ‘killed’Duke, but the trauma from Prime getting killed earlier that year made them change it to a coma…
Don't forget,Optimus Prime returned.
Sitting in the lap of Lincoln. There's a badass. lol
Megatron did one better. He threw Lincoln out of his seat.
@@BrotherDerrick3X was about to say this lol
The Marvel Comics version of Serpentor was way better than the cartoon. In the Marvel version, he cared about his soldiers & he had a sense of humor. Case in point on both the former & latter, when he found out the soldiers weren't getting fed, he told them in one of his past lifetimes, he took the crackers, potted meat, ketchup & cheese from an MRE & made pizza. In the Cobra Civil War issues the Joes sided with Serpentor. The cartoon version was a douchebag
That’s awesome. Comic serpentor sounds way more interesting.
Comic Serpentor is a very good leader and I like how he won over his troops right after being created.
I've always thought that instead of Sgt Slaughter, it would have made more sense if either Duke or General Joseph Colton were the heroes' clone source for Serpentor.
"Shocking!"
Would have been funny If he had the physical power of napoleon and the strategic mind of sergeant slaughter
It was the pro-wrestling being popular among those who purchased GI Joe toys, said pro-wrestler toys, and the fact that they watched both, with most who watched both favoring Sgt. Slaughter. Cartoons at the time were mostly really long toy commercials based upon existing potential markets, not the other way around. Adults of the 80s were uber-capitalist soulless scum who were beloved for their masks. Deadpool would be a villain back then because he's a perfect 80s character... but honest about it, no matter how often he played the hero.
@@That80sGuy1972 The executives weren't completely successful, though. A year after Sgt Slaughter, they tried to do an action figure of William "Refrigerator" Perry. It didn't work so well.
Sgt Slaughter was gold, but The Fridge went cold.
(Though to be honest, it was probably because Slaughter was featured in the GI Joe cartoon and I don't think Perry ever made an appearance. Though a character called "Sgt Slaughter" does lend himself better to a military toyline than a football player called "Refrigerator".)
@@AustynSN I wasn't aware that they tried that with Fridge. I agree about Slaughter, he's a better fit. Fridge was just a huge, strong, obese football player who was excellent at "plowing" (resisting being tackled). My dad watched a lot of football. When I heard him laughing like a kid, I ran into the living room to see what he saw on TV. It was usually Fridge just waddling the final steps to the 1st down with a cluster of players from the other team clinging to him, trying to pull him down. I can also see why Fridge didn't work out. The Joe's already had a very strong black guy who could do something like that... and he wasn't super-husky, he was more hulking. The Joe's don't like having similar people on the same side.
If memory serves, wasn't he "Refrigerator Perry" aka "The Fridge"? My dad hogged our main TV whenever that team played... fortunately, we had a B&W TV in our room with an Atari set, and we played outside during the daylight.
Serpentor, Unicron, Stampede and Hordes Prime have one thing in common : They are 'Palpatines' in their cartoon series, being mostly in the background, while representing ultimate evil
I love my GI Joe Classified Serpentor figure ☺
My favorite version of the character is actually the one in the Transformers crossover comics. The idea of a half cybertronian/half human hybrid created in a lab like Frankenstein is such a cool idea.
Sad that we never got a GI Joe/Transformers crossover in cartoon form back in the 80's
We did. With the TRANSFOMERS G1 episode,"Only Human".
The book "God Emperor of Dune" centers around a character VERY similar to Serpentor.
Serpentor was supposed to be Cobra's elite general. What Dr Mindbender didn't consider was the traits that made all of those men in history great warriors, also made them outstanding leaders. Serpentor's ambition was his downfall. Serpentor led from the front, unlike CC. Zartan sent an arrow (using the same bow with which he killed The Hard Master), just like William the Conqueror did before him (one of Serpentor's DNA donors) to kill the King of Hastings, which landed right in Serpentor's eye.
"Serpentor should have Adolf Hitler's DNA inside him so he would be a vegetarian leader who failed of becoming an artist." 🎨
"Serpentor should have Shaka Zulu's DNA inside him and he will do the bull horn formation."
"Serpentor should have Joseph Stalin's DNA inside him, so he can do some purges against Gi joe."
"Serpentor should have Prince 🤴John Lackland's DNA inside him, so he can finance Cobra's currency."
"Serpentor should have Erik the Red's DNA inside him and he will go sailing ⛵ just like him."
I remember watching the GI Joe movie in the 80s and when cobra commander turned into a actual Snake me and my older brother were like oh shit lol
I take it that Serpentor didn't acquire Son Su DNA as a bit of a gag, because villains, no matter how powerful, always seem to lose because they lacked the patience to see their plans through to the end, giving the good guys the break they need to win the day
That's Sun Tzu
I remember when the G.I.Joe: A Real American Hero TV Cartoon Series Season 2 aired.
I remember when the 'Arise, Serpentor, Arise' 5-Part Mini-Series aired on Television In 1986. The 5-Part Episode Introduced the character of Serpentor voiced by the late-voice actor:
Richard 'Dick' Gautier.
I watched It when I was young In the 1980's.
I remember watching the gi joe movie as a child...awesome
I always thought that since the Joes captured all of mindbenders equipment, they do a joe version...Audie Murphy, Carlos Hathcock, Alvin York, ect...a humble expert marksman and team player.
Thanks for sharing this cool video
Thanks! I always wondered what happend to him a GIJtm! Great vid.!
This is my fav Gijoe Saga
Do as you are told and create more Marvelous videos, THIS I COMMAND!!!!!
I hope to see a Super7 ReAction figure version of Serpentor so we can police alongside Galvatron “THIS I COMMAND🐍”
Why didn't you mention his defeat in the show? In Operation Dragonfire Cobra Commander returns to human form and turned Serpentor into a lizard.
Probably because most people don't consider the Dic series as animated Canon. It's more like a hand painting made by pre-schoolers
@@dal5x5lmao
Awesome
A cartoon classic grew up on this cartoon!!
I still wanna see a spin-off animated series, of Gi-joe Transformers
IDW Publishing was about to release a comic in regards to what happened after GI Joe: The Movie but COVID halted production
fun fact: snake men cults taking over society was introduced by Robert E Howard King Kull story: "The Shadow Kingdom"
And Alex Jones.
Cobra Commander was wasting time, money, effort and talent trying to kill Serpentor. He should know Serpentor was perfectly capable of doing himself in.
Trivia. Duke was supposed to be killed off in GIJoe the movie but due to the out cry about the death of Optimus Prime in the Transformers movie it was decided that Duke would go into a coma instead of die.
9:33 sgt slaughter and snake eyes both doing rassling holds
Cobra commander rival of leadership
I got IBS and just ate my second donut,my stomach already hurting…pray for my toilet 😔😔
"On this I command!"
If they put him in a live action movie who would be good to play him lol
I loved Serpentor and remember getting his figure and air chariot for Christmas BUT I hated the whole Cobra-La storyline. Gi Joe was so grounded in gritty reality, like the Springfield Saga.
It just felt too wacky to me
*That's because you didn't understand it, and as result you missed the bigger picture as well my friend. See the introduction of Cobra-La brought a Sci-fi edge to the show, not to mention a much needed boost to the franchise. That's why the 80's GIJOE that we know and love is far better than its predecessors.*
*See when Cobra-La shows up we not only find out where Cobra Commander comes from, we also discover in-that revelation that Cobra is much more than a mere organization of fanatical terrorist, but instead its actually an ancient civilization/race of serpent people lurking in the shadows of our present day world. One that dominated the planet long before the dawn of man....which is deep.*
*See its that sort of "wacky" stuff as you put it that make for good story telling. I find it quite interest.....chilling too if you really think about it. For instance just imagine or rather think for a minute about what's really out there beyond the veil of what we think we know and see? You see what I'm saying??*
Cobra LA LA LA LA LA LA!!!!
a clone of serpentor in the comics was put in gi joe to distroy them from the inside be he likes being a joe more so switched sides i dont remember what comic run it was marvel or idw
Devil's Due
Cobra lalalalala
So was this video about Serpentor or GI Joe the Movie? Also, it completely missed out on the continuing story of Serpentor in IDW ARAH.
@3:45 Serpentor didn't get Sgt. Slaughter's DNA.
Sgt Slaughter was a Bad @ss as a character in cartoons and as a character in the Wrestling world!
A lot of Serpentor’s elite ancestors meant their doom from other generals like Napoleon and Montezuma.
I bet you money 💰 that someone from LUCAS FILM 🎥 watched G.I. JOE The Movie and get the idea of The Vong in StarWars Legends !!!
Cobra lalal
Serpentor has 2pac dna
Can you do Optimus Prime please
Why didn’t Cobra Commander destroy humankind? Because he fell in love with a woman and had a kid called Billy Kessler or was it the Overlord?
You shall watch this video. THIS SERPENTOR COMMANDS!
Nemesis Enforcer was a total bad @ss!
What about Oliver Cromwell DNA
Which DNA was he created from and what value does it have to his creation?
Caeser, Atilla the Hun amongst others, it was in the cartoon back in the 80s
Mindbender had considered using Hitler and Stalin’s DNA, but he decided he didn’t want a leader focused on snake purity or trying to turn Cobra into the KGB.
I'm sorry. I can't take him seriously because of the Nostalgia critic. 🤣
I find it pathetic that the nostalgia critic has to use a fake name to comment on others pages in hopes of marketing his failing channel
@@alteclansing987456 Are you talk to me or the text me thing before this comment?
No, not you. Just pointing fun at the nostalgia critic. You’re good 👍
Couldn't t finish the video.
A cult leader. Negative, he was a visionary, a leader bold enough to stand up to the corrupt Gi Joe's. He brought honor to Cobra. Some wait for the Devils return. But I know serpentor lives, and will return to usher in peace and harmony to humanity. Hail Serpentor.
If the live action GI Joe wasn’t such crap and was allowed to continue, I’d love to see the cobra la brought in and Serpentor brought to life. I actually imagine him as almost a Khan like character. A genetically superior being but with an ego that would eventually lead to his downfall.
I’ve always thought of him this way, he was intelligent, but had fits of uncontrollable rage as well as madness.
Serpentorc reminds me of cell dbz
Golobulus.
He gave Dr.Mindbender the idea and the skill in Dr. Mindbenders rather pedestrian brain, with a psychic motivator.
This I command :p
@®️𝗧𝗘𝗫𝗧 𝗠𝗘±₁₂₁₆₂₂₃₈₈₈₅ hey
Storm Shadow died in the comic?
In the comics serpentor is way better 👍
I agree. He thought Cobra Commander was like his long lost brother at one time.
@@altarush they seem to keep the comics and the anime not together 🤔
Too bad serpentor didn't last long I thought they should have made him more of a badass in the g.i.joe cartoon & the comics.
BET⭐ exposed, and knowing is half the battle.
Serpentor not Serpenter....
Lol, hawk says serpenter. Always made me laugh.
Didn't guts kill him
"History's most outstanding leaders" lol wow
Comic serpentor was great, cartoon not so much
"This I command"
