It's glossed over that he's (usually) a merc, mercenary, gun for hire... that means that probably part of why he keeps escaping consequence is that he's hired by one or more of "the good guys" of the world to do work they need done. It kind of breaks the whole need for most people watching entertainment to assign white hats and black hats to characters they watch. Firefly is no hero, not at all, but he's an awesome character whose only real ideology is his income and the way he does it. He's not as charming nor as audience-winning as Deadpool, but he is a far more reliable and effective mercenary... and he does it all without being a 4th-wall breaking immortal with magic gear and weapon skill that might just shame Musashi.
Firefly, Zartan, Croc Master, Scrap Iron, Major Bludd, Copperhead, Dr. Mindbender, Tomax and Xamot...G.I. Joe got great, interesting vilains and a endless possibilities for series and movies. Netflix should give us some decent original stuff.
He is also known as the Faceless Master from the Koga clan and the Retaliation version was in line with the Sigma 6 version in which he was a former Gi Joe
Firefly rules and his portrayal by Ray Stevenson was also great.
