    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey, thanks for writing in. It can take time for dogs to adapt to a new environment. In the meantime, I'm a big proponent of hand feeding. Scoop out as much as food as you would like them to eat in a single meal and then sit down with them in a cozy spot and deliver small handfuls at a time. This can help them feel more comfortable in their new space, it can be a good way to get them more interested in their main meals and it can help to establish a stronger individual connection with you. That individual attention will be helpful in the long-term when raising litter mates. Best, Alyssa Rose www.legendsdogtraining.com

    Rose I have a beagle female which would be 2 yrs old this June. Frisky last weighed a month back was 13.300kgs & the Vet was of the few she was slightly overweight . I feed her 150gms of chicken with handful of mixed veg comprising of carrot+ beans and at times give her pumpkin for a change. I make a stew and split this quantity into 2 portions and feed it with hand made wheat bread/ pancake type. I add a pinch of turmeric at times add a pod of garlic to the above. Please correct me where necessary. Your advice would be greatly valued.

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  Před 3 lety

      Hi Roland, I love the fact that you put so much thought and care into your feeding, and that you have such exact measurements on how much you're offering. I am cautious to make any recommendations on what to feed your dog - though it does sound like Frisky is getting a good balance of nutrients. My understanding is that garlic can be harmful. You may want to talk to a nutritionist or your vet about this. If a dog is overweight I would start by reducing the quantity by 5%. Keep track of your dog's weight, and then re-assess every 2 weeks. A dog's metabolism can fluctuate with age, activity level and even depending on seasonal temperatures. This is what I did with my basset hound mix Fritz (one of the dogs seen in the video). It was common for me to adjust the quantity I was delivering at each meal every few months. This was always important to me because of his long back - I always wanted to make sure that his back and joints stayed healthy and that he wasn't carrying any extra weight. I hope this is helpful. Best wishes, Alyssa Rose

    I have a whippet. It's hard to measure a sighthound's food, but he has always looked good, so I must be doing something right. The breeder with 30 years experience in them, said they typically can't really be overweight, at least at a young age. I eventually understood what she meant, because... if you over feed them, it basically just comes back out the other end. lol

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for watching! It's true - I don't see many overweight whippets. But really a dog's ideal weight is one aim in creating a healthy feeding schedule, but the two other things that I look at is 1. Is the dog excited about meal time? I believe this has bigger implications on a dog's overall well being. 2. Is the dog motivated by food in exercises that can help to achieve training goals, especially when it comes to training that help the dog work through anxiety, fear, reactivity, or other stress related behavioral concerns - which is my primary focus in this channel. Thanks again for taking the time to watch, and comment. Greatly appreciated! - Alyssa Rose

    What should i do with my dog? I just got a Malamute Husky mix and he looks good but he also has a lot of fur. He eats kinda fast and i give him 2 cups, as i just got him yesterday. i think i’m feeding him right but i just want to check with you. He is only a year and about 18-20 months.Also he is hyper active, i would like to teach him some tricks like fetch, not pulling on the leash etc. If you also have tips for that it would be very helpful :)

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey! Thanks for watching! That's great that he has such a healthy appetite. It's always harder to judge a dog's ideal weigh when they have a thick coat, so try running your hands along his back and hip bones. If you're not concerned about his weight, and he has a voracious appetite, I would ] increase the quantity in small increments (ie. 1/8th of a cup) until you find that sweet spot. Most nordic breeds are more interested in chasing critters than tennis balls. Has he shown any interest in toys so far? For calming exercises I have two online classes that might interest you. One class focuses on mat work training for building calm, connected behavior in the home - this class is called "Calm Connections." The other class focuses on heel work training for building calm, connected behavior on walks - this is called "Reactive Dog." This second class is primarily for dogs that exhibit more impulsive behavior on leash, but any dog can benefit from both classes. Here is a link with more info about those online classes: www.legendsdogtraining.com/live-classes/ Best, Alyssa Rose

    I’m wondering how long do I wait after feeding for exercise???
    I have bad dreams constantly about my dog getting a twisted stomach and I really need reassurance.
    I want him to get plenty of exercise but I find myself making my dog wait 4 hrs after eating before I give him exercise.
    How long should I wait exactly? I feed him twice a day. 6 am and 6pm
    Edit** I even find myself not allowing my dog to roll around and jump etc after he eats. Like am I paranoid and over worrying??? Plz I would love peace of mind and reassurance

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  Před 2 lety

      A lot of vets recommend that you wait 2 hours after feeding before exercising your dog. This is of greatest concern if you have a dog that has a deep chest, especially as they get older. This happened to our doberman when he was 11, and was a huge concern with my dog Fritz who had a very deep chest and a long body (he was the black dog that was sitting next to me in this video). Bring this up with your vet at your next check up and see what she/he has to say. Best wishes, Alyssa Rose

    • @Kyle-ut4jg
      @Kyle-ut4jg Před 2 lety

      It is best to exercise your dog before you feed them. Exercise makes a dog poop and if it has only been a few hours after they ate they will most likely have a soft or even runny poop from their last meal, since it had only been digesting for a few hours not enough of the nutrients and water will have been absorbed. After exercising then eating most dogs will be ready for a nice long nap.

    I would like to add question in here
    I have 9 months old female Labrador named bella .. Please help
    Also i will follow each and evry details you mentioned... Thankyou

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  Před 3 lety

      Hi Ankita! Thank you for watching and commenting here, I appreciate it. I actually really like hand feeding. I find it's a great way to create a calm connection with your dog each day. It's like sitting down with your family and meals. If you want to really make the most of it, hand feed Bella while she's standing, sitting or lying down (she can choose) on a training mat. That training mat can later be used to promote calmer behavior when she becomes excited (like when guests visit), or to build confidence with things that could make her nervous (like fireworks or thunderstorms). That being said, it does surprise me to hear the words "doesn't like eating" in association with a Lab. Like the video suggests - I would start by averaging out the amount of food that she chooses to eat in a one week span of time. I would also be curious to know if there is any fearful or anxious behavior that could be leading to a suppressed appetite. How does she do with separation? Or when she hears loud noises outside? How long have you been attempting to hand feed? Does he receive other foods throughout the day? Bully sticks, milk bones or dental chews? I would also be curious to know how much you're attempting to feed him at one time? Best, Alyssa Rose

    When I just put down dry food and water I start to feel anxious when she eat it. Do I just need to give it more time. Things are not good now. My Mom (80 yrs old) keeps crock potting chicken for our 18 lbs dog. I also give our dog too many treats because I fear she’s not eating enough of the food (dry and chicken). I’m just finding it hard to change our bad habits. When I cut back Bailey our dog eats grass, pebbles, assorted non edible materials. Help

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  Před 2 lety

      Hi Burt, The majority of treats are high in fillers. We definitely want to make sure that those treats aren't satiating your dog to the point that she is becoming less interested in nutrient filled meals. As you mentioned, giving a lot of treats can be a hard habit to break. You might try letting your supply of treats run out and then making a point to not buy another bag. You can still make sure your dog is getting the "good stuff" though. When your mom cooks chicken you can fill a small tupperware container and then use this throughout the day as treats or for fun training exercises. To find the right quantity of food (whatever you happen to feed your dog for breakfast or dinner) I would just pay attention to how much your dog actually chooses to eat at each meal. Like I said in the video.. write it down and average this out over the course of a week. This should give you a good idea of how much food your dog actually wants/ needs. Some dogs will eat larger portions on one day, but then eat very little for the next 2 or 3 meals. Looking at your dog's eating habits over the course of a week should give you a better indication of what that "sweet spot" is. Trust that your dog isn't going to let herself go hungry. Most dogs turn away from food because they're already getting the necessary calories. If you feel your dog is undernourished and isn't eating for this reason - then don't hesitate to make a visit to the vet. Hope this is helpful! Alyssa Rose www.legendsdogtraining.com

      Hey! How are things going with your puppies feeding schedule? Sometimes puppies lack an appetite early on because they're still adjusting to the changes of coming into a new home. If you are still finding it difficult to get her to eat - I would offer smaller portions and keep track of how much she is actually choosing to eat. If she seems underweight - contact your vet. If she seems like she's at a good weight - I would trust her to know when she's full. Like the video says ... dog food bags will almost always recommend more food than a dog actually needs. Generally, I trust that the puppy/dog is going to eat when they're feeling hungry. It's ok to offer small portions more frequently throughout the day, just try to avoid leaving food out all-day-long. Hope you're doing well! Best, Alyssa Rose

To this day begs, but knows we won't give, so will eventually lay down while we eat. Doctor wanted him to have Science Diet for seniors, dry, but would not eat all by itself. I give a small sliver of Healthy Pet roll smashed and smaller qty of SD dry. I was shocked to hear in your video the feeding qty suggested is often too much. I've tried to give him carrots, berries, some broccoli, but so far no interest.

      @legendsdogtraining  Před 2 lety

      Hey! I apologize for the slow response. Have things gotten any better? A measuring cup is key. Sometimes cutting back on the quantity of food being offered, even if it's 5%, can make a big difference. If she is healthy and at a good weight, you can assume that she is choosing to eat the quantity that is right for her. My smaller dogs eat a fraction of what is recommended on the dog food label and they are at healthy weights. If I increase the quantity they will eat a full meal once or twice and then show reduced interest in subsequent meals. Thank you for watching and taking the time to write in. I have been told that the amount of food should match the amount of poop. Do you agree?
    My 8 month old 40 lb long haired pup just finished her first (and last) heat and her appetite is a lot less now. Maybe she’s nearing her adult weight and as well she may be stressed by some hot temperatures this last few weeks. She definitely likes cold and snow!

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  Před 2 lety

      As long as she appears healthy I usually trust the dog to "tell me" how much food they're interested in eating and adjust the amount offered accordingly. Naturally if there is any concern about an underlying medical issue, it's always a good idea to schedule a visit with your vet. That being said, heat cycles and warm weather can definitely alter appetite. Sounds like she might be missing those cooler temps! As far as poop goes I know that feeding higher quality food means less fillers, which means smaller portions that are more packed with nutrients. And a.. smaller amount of feces. Not sure if the quantity that goes in always matches the quantity that comes out though. :) Best, Alyssa Rose www.legendsdogtraining.com
