- The Spiders of the metro are creatures that are man eaters much like the other creatures in Post apocalyptic Russia however, these are expert hunters and attack in swarms. They do have one main weakness however, Light. So lets explore the reasons behind why they are so sensitive to it.
Thanks for watching Roanoke Gaming and I hope you enjoy Metro Last Light Spiders Explained | Sensitivity to Light explored | Lair Mutation Lore and Biology

Internet is up and running, videos should be coming out in quicker intervals! This is a late post but I hope you guys enjoy anyhow! Subbing is a great way to stay up to date if you are new and liking helps the video get out there. Also if you suffer from arachnophobia...gods speed. This video made my skin crawl putting it together lol. Hope everyone has a great day!

Great video man!
I have a question, is there any proof that psoralin would be transferred through ingestion, and that it wouldn't be destroyed?
The theory on the light weakness is an incredibly interesting answer to a question i never thought to ask.
Glad you enjoyed it bro!
@@RoanokeGamingYour channel fills a niche that pretty much no other channel does. Keep it up :)
Imagining these things without it’s light weakness in game and in lore is a terrifying thought
That's a very good summary of the channel as a whole

Whoever animates the Spiderbugs deserves a raise. They move so freakishly naturally that even catching a glimpse of one makes me shiver when playing Last Light. Even with just four main legs, they captured the movement of a spider so well that I find it hard sometimes to keep my arachnophobia in check. Their sound and AI designers also deserve praise, of course; the increasing volumn of those horrible, scuttling legs as they move closer combined with their ability to retreat and wait for another chance to attack make them amazing survival-horror enemies.
And then when you successfully eradicate a hive of those fuckers you can still hear them chittering from the holes in the walls...
The only creatures that made me scared 100% of the time. Librarians were scary enough, but these things are on another level.

You honestly make the best Metro Lore videos. I mean who else would actually go to the effort to find out about that mutagenic compound and how it could have affected the spiders? Well done
Thank you for the compliment bro! I do try hard on these videos and its nice when the work required for the research is acknowledged :)
Roanoke Gaming it pays off, great quality videos with probably the most credible and best theories out there
Better than Oxhorns (fake classy boy) Fallout videos.
You: The fear of spiders is called arachnophobia
Me, an intellectual: the fear of spiders is called common sense
its definitely primal
Most spiders can't hurt you and it's a situation of mind over matter.

The reason suggested for their weakness to light is somewhat jossed by Exodus. Spiderbugs are found as far away as the Caspian Sea and the Taiga. There are no Nosalises or any obvious source of mutagens found in those locations yet they still burn, suggesting that their weakness is inherited rather than due to their diet/environment.
Well, obviously they're afflicted with severe phototoxicity. It could happen for any number of whacky reasons, however that paired with nuclear radiation. I'm sure it can be reasonably said that it makes what is already whacky, many times more whacky.

I love your theories about these creatures and why they have certain traits. It really makes the game feel 10X more immersive and believable. Makes me want to go play metro over and over again just for the creatures.
Ayyy Thats great to hear! I love coming up with these to give them a possible realistic basis, but you should play it again! moreso with exodus on the horizon! glad you enjoyed the video bro and I will keep them going as long as there are creatures and theories to cover!
@@RoanokeGaming I also have a little bit of a theory that the type of arachnid these may have descended from might be from the order of Opiliones, i came to this conclusion as they have no venom glands and their overall shape of their body (especially their Anterior cephalothorax) suggests that at least in the males previous generations might have not had a segmented abdominal section, although, we are talking about mutations in a game so basically anything is possible hah.

Glad you are enjoying them bro! and I am happy the science isn't boring people!
The spiders in the metro series, above all else, demonstrate the brilliant atmosphere of this series. The Spider Lair dlc level from Last Light is my favorite level in any game i have ever played. Nothing compares to the first time going through that level. I would love to see someone do an in depth review and critique of that level. I can't give it enough praise. Wearing a headset is a must.
Side note, their little growl when you're in light and they are frustrated they can't get to you is kinda cute
You do such a great job explaining all these monsters, never stop making these videos, I can't stop watching them!
I will keep them coming bro! and thank you for the compliment!
Arachnophobia: Fear of spiders
Phobia: Irrational fear
There is nothing irrational about fearing these things...
The theory about the spread of the contamination couldnt have happened by the ground water, since have been 20 years since the bombs-fall event and the ground water really takes a lot of years to move something in the scale of hundred meters. So i believe that the time for contaminant to spread + the time to the mutations occour may take more than 20 years. Another thing to be considered is the nature of the contaminant, since that is an organic complex, it tends to be really a really light-weight molecule, making its transport to occour really close to the top of the body water, not letting it go too far down, creating one morr difficulty to hit and modify the normal animals. Thats what i have learned in my bachaelor in geology.
The effort you put in your your videos... wow, I love it!
Thank you bro! I do try my best with the videos, glad you can tell!

I think my favorite part about your channel is your approach. Most content creators who do this kind of thing point out all the reasons stuff like this would never happen or exist.
Instead, you look at it and go "what IRL conditions could allow this to happen" and try to explain it.
I’m one of the few people that actually like spiders, but something about these guys really gets under my skin, I think it’s the tip tappy noise their feet make or the strange jaw structure they have but, idk they disturb me, the hatchlings don’t but, the rest are strangely terrifying
its like...everything about it is off putting
Man you go in deep for that lore, it’s great!

These things are creepy af, and when you loot a body uhhhhhh nope

@@RoanokeGaming hey Roanoke I haven't been getting your notifications for videos even tho I clicked the bell
Completely agree with the food chain trickle effect. But i would argue that they are crustations, not arachnids. . . With, somehow, mammalian features (primitive lungs, warm blooded, elastic skin). It would explain the lack of venom, the body shape (body shape looks more insectoid with 3 parts, numerous crustations have a 'head' section [not a true head obviously, but a segment that vaguely replicates the ability to 'turn its head'] whereas arachnids do not). The pedipalps, although more stereotypically associated with arachnids, belong to crustaceans aswell (altho called something different, cant remember off the top of my head). The jaw structure is considerably more 'crab-like' than an arachnid (outer mandibles become lower 'fangs', inner mandibles become ancillary 'teeth'). Im picturing a coconut crab evolving to fill a burrowing mammals niche, except the loss of those enormous pincers would be to much of an evolutionary loss, so something built more like a crayfish/prawn? Loss of limbs could easily be explained via food source changing and the need for 3d maneuverability in cramped spaces (no point having 6 extra limbs burning energy when the mammals its attempting to emmulate can do it with only 4).
Excellent vid nonetheless my man. Excellent quality as always (your generalization of spider roles based on gender was quite off though)
very interesting Idea! we know of the shrimp with are the crustaceans but that doenst mean these spiders couldn't actually be. Good thinking! and I am glad you enjoyed it! The gender roles for spiders is a "typical Spider" thing. There are always going to be outliers but males are seen more mobile than females typically but that doesn't always mean its 100% all the time
@@Wolf_ManJack very true, cant argue with that. . . Hadnt actually considered it to be honest. The only other web spinning arthropods are insects, and the deviation of arachnid/insect happened well after the crustacean deviation, so it wouldnt make sense that its a latent gene or anything. . . I stick by the logic of my previous message, but you have me stumped on the silk aspect. . . Unless its not actually a form of silk, more like a protein based, liquid form of chitin, like a velvet worm or glue spider, in which case itd be like a really obscure form of convergent evolution. . . The chances are so miniscule and unlikely, but we are talking about a fictional game so. . .
@@Wolf_ManJack they are evil looking fuckers arent they? Always remind me of cone snails. . . Slow and deceptive, yet unfathomably dangerous. . . Cool evolutionary path. Always happy to share biological intrigues among fellows with a keen eye for evolutionary potential (i highly recommemd reading 'after man' by dougal dixon, future evolutionary biology his a fascinating topic. . . I respect the effort you put in. 👌
I have a suggestion in a question if that makes sense lol. You think you'll ever consider doing an anatomy/biology video on the Predator or even the Xenomorph/Neomorph cycles from the Alien franchise? It's crazy how you break down the anatomy and characteristics of these things lol. Think it would be real interesting if you were to break down the anatomy and cycle of the Predator and Alien types lol. Keep up the great content brother, your channel is really unique.
Thanks bro! I think alien has been done ALOT but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to examine it regardless, as for the predators, if I can find a game where I get a good look at them It would be perfect!
@@RoanokeGaming
My pleasure man and I do agree on that part, alien has been done quite a handful lol. But as for the predator, I do have a couple game suggestions where you can get a good look at them. One game is Aliens vs Predator (2010) and the other game is Predator: Concrete Jungle. It's just that Predator Concrete Jungle is an old game (2005) that was for the orginal xbox and playstation 2. But the graphics on the predator itself were actually kind of detailed and exceptional for it's time, suprisingly lol.
@@RoanokeGaming
If you do decide to do the Predator, I'll mention that there are now three types of predators: normal predators, super predators (Predators 2010 movie), and upgraded predators (The Predator 2018 movie). Just thought I should let you know that part just in case you do consider lol. Really hope to see a Predator morphology/anatomy video. The predator lore has always been kind of mysterious in a few aspects. Like their homeworld and how they came to be lol. I'll also be more than glad to offer more info if you need it.
Love the vid but wasnt there some book or note that claimed back in the day when the Russians were digging secret tunnels that there was already some made by something else? Im not too sure but great vid anyway. 😀
they did mention that the tunnels were there but they had no idea what actually made them! glad you enjoyed it bro!
Ya know Roanoke your probably my favorite content creator currently, hope you enjoy what ur doing man, keep it up.
I do man! whenever I can throw in some theories it makes it that much more fun to create, and I am glad to hold that title bro!
Love the way you break down the biology. My college bio major I’m in helps me see the theories and what not that supports your theories and connecting those dots makes the games seem way more deep that the devs prob intended. Keep up the cool work, love how you interpret the Metro
Thanks bro! Glad to hear you are enjoying them! and that bio class comes in handy eh? haha its interesting to think if the devs did mean what they did or not, but either way, biologically alot of what they have done does make sense!
I think these spiders may have mutated from Pholcidae or more commonly know as daddy longlegs spiders or cellar spiders which can be found in Russia (all over the world in fact) because the Metro Last Light spiders appear to have stingers instead of tails. As we (or I) know daddy longlegs are not spiders but are distantly related groups of arthropods: harvestmen (which are arachnids but not spiders) and in fact this group is more closly related to scorpions than spiders. Which would expain both why they were living underground and why the males apear to have these tails. Also my theory to support is that due to the need to handle bigger prey the metro spiders had thier excess leg evolve into extra mandibles to help the chop their prey with more ease also daddy longlegs can live with just four or even three legs. Well I am not a expert on spiders or anything but I have studied the daddy longlegs because I have a lot of them around my storage area and wanted to know more about them.
an interesting point! that could honestly be the case as well considering what is living in the area
Watching this in bed about to go sleep and ik theres shit load(4or5) of spiders in my room....... great
Well just remember, youre more likely to eat them than them bite you!
I gotta admit these videos really answer my question with high quality

fought these things in Metro 2033 in my first ever playthrough. Low ammo, no filters, lots of spiders and no lover for them. Looking back, i though it them catching fire was just a side effect of the railgun. i noticed they feared light but this video explains a LOT about how i managed to survive.
I know you probably won’t see this, but I just watched the video and I think the sand lion might be a viable option for the core mutation host. The tails on the males look exactly the same, the method they hunt matches, their domains are the same, as is the habit of venturing out and dragging prey back in. I’ll admit I can’t explain the webbing but it might be worth some consideration. Awesome videos man
