My mom had a ~5ft tall potted coffee bush in her house in Canada. One christmas it fruited. Curious, I picked the berries, soaked them in water, painstakingly peeled each one, and roasted the green beans in a popcorn maker based on instructions I'd read online. The yield was a similar amount--enough for a small cup of coffee. I gulped it down and simply noted that it tasted like coffee. Never realized how special that was until now!

I have wasted occasions! Had a coffee tree about the same size for 15 years, yielded fruits twice a years! Bugs killed it. I was afraid it would not be arabica. (Also from Canada)

As someone originally from Costa Rica, it’s very eye-opening to see you be appreciative of coffee grown, harvested, and roasted where you live. Makes me feel more grateful for the bounty in my proverbial backyard.
I live on the Gold Coast in Australia. I had a coffee tree in a huge pot near my front door and it would fruit every year. Most people had no clue what it was but were fascinated when I told them. I harvested the berries each time and I still have a jar of the green beans. I finally got sick of watering the tree and sold it to a local coffee shop!

You can't communicate what you're tasting to someone else, in this case an entire audience looking for this exact information, without giving the downsides as well.

There is a project between a growers' association and a national coffee brand to have coffee grown in the Azores islands (Portugal) commercially available (at least?) nation-wide in the next 15 years. Local sale was predicted to start this year, but I assume a certain current event has put a bit of a dampener on things. (We are already the only place in Europe that grows tea, so I'm pretty excited to try this coffee tbh)
Aside from that project, in the island of S. Jorge, there is already a café that sells espresso made from their locally grown beans.
We went to that cafe after a long walk, and the coffee was really good :)

Tea has been grown in Tregothnan, Truro, Cornwall in England for over 20 years and sold commercially for over 15, so you are not the only place in Europe to grow it.
I've been nurturing two trees down here in New Zealand for the past 8 years and this year they finally flowered and one has cherries, hopefully they ripen nicely!
I'm sure Roastworks had a hunch that you might share this experience with us, so thank you to them (and you) for doing this. I'm also sure they knew this would never be a perfect coffee, and most people would be scared to put this out there, so double thanks. A lovely video, really made me smile to see people just doing something for the love of it and to see what happens.

This is great! Live in Sydney and have 4 coffee bushes in pots in the garden. Manage to get a few cups of raw beans and after all the work, I now appreciate how much is done by the farmers to give us the beautiful beans.
I was lucky enough to try a sl-28 grown at Edinburgh botanical gardens once, it was terrible haha and it very quickly showed how important the processing skills and terroir of each farm were

I'd love to hear your thoughts on Nepali coffee! The climate in Nepal is amazing, but the Nepalese coffee has previously had a bad reputation because the coffee growing industry is still quite young there, and the farmers might not be as skilled in terms of processing and picking the beans as the farmers in more well known countries, but Nepal has a huge potential for great coffee in my opinion!!

My local roaster had a huge coffee tree in their shop and would do a small batch of coffee for staff each year (Nova Scotia, Canada). I didn't get to taste it, but I did get a cherry from the tree and now have 2 good sized coffee plants growing away at home. Maybe one day I'll get to harvest.
you know what i love about James video? The way he explain and express his love for such a simple product for some people but for us coffee lovers, and my self a sommelier, a beautiful and complex beverage with tons of aroma and background to explore. i can feel the love he puts in a cup/ a video through my screen ! thanks you james for your time and effort! I've been impressed by coffee from the Philippines. Was not expecting to find any out there, but was really impressed by what I found. Worth trying to seek it out

It's amazing to see this, being able to cultivate a plant outside of its natural climate, to a state where it could bear fruit and do so well. I'd definitely be interested in hearing of coffee that is unconventionally grown like this one.
I can't say that I've had the opportunity to try something like it, though. But it is interesting, I grew up and live in Puerto Rico and, at least locally, we take great pride in our coffee production and consumption. I personally am relatively new to the specialty coffee space, and coffee in general. But I am interested in comparing local coffees, that aren't perhaps as often the subject of discourse, with coffees that are more well known.
Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to the world's largest coffee tasting event, not being able to participate last year. I already bought my kit, and I look toward learning about new and interesting tastes and comparing it to local coffees.
I did not expect the price to be so reasonable for the coffee tasting. I joined right away. 1.10 Pounds for shipping to Germany, very nice!

Fascinating! Probably about 50 years ago, I used to patronize a small roaster in San Francisco, CA. Freed, Teller, and Freed. They've been gone now for ~40 years, but had been there for probably the preceding 50 years. At the time, one of the few places to get good, varietal coffee. On the wall, they had a small glassine envelope with about 20 coffee beans in it, carefully labeled as "San Francisco grown coffee." I have to believe it came out of the wonderful old Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park, a classic Victorian glass-domed conservatory, with some wonderful old species in it. Never got a chance to taste the coffee, of course. Probably just as well.

In Russia where I'm from I saw coffee growing in botanical gardens in their greenhouses. And it fruits nicely, they definitely have a large coffee plant in the main botanical garden. I don't know for sure, but I expect at least one curious botanist to taste their coffee. It's not very difficult to provide suitable climate for coffee within a greenhouse, it's just visitors are not interested in looking at coffee plantation, orchids and azaleas look much more attractive.
From what I know, there were attempts to grow coffee in Russia (around Sochi) back in Soviet times, but one frosty winter killed off all the trees in a couple of decades.
I'm sure there are some enthusiasts growing coffee indoors, but I wouldn't count that.
Before I was a coffee drinker, I visited a coffee plantation in Guatemala. I picked some coffee from the trees and LOVED the fruit! So tasty!
We have a grower in New Zealand now starting up. I plan to have a go if I can find the right piece of land, so expect a bag in the post in a few years James.
Interesting, and I'm very curious about the carbon footprint of this kind of coffee, the shorter transportation can offset the energy and resources involved in recreating the desired climate for the coffee to grow, but it might not be enough.
James mentioned they have an AC running so that might not do a whole lot environmentally. The CO2 emissions per unit mass of coffee using an AC probably comfortably exceed the energy required to transport it. But roasting the coffee might be the most energy intensive part of production anyway, and that step is not really avoidable.
I suspect any transport gains would be crushed by the additional energy of AC or temperature management for the plant.

On the canary islands (more specific on La Palma) there is a project to boost the coffee industry, the "island government" distributed coffee plants to farmers and they grow it all over the island to test out the best regions for growing coffee. One big influence on that is the spanish barista champion Rayco Rodriguez, who is from La Palma and is operating a Cafe/roastery there. And my parents (the moved there recently) have two coffee bushes in their garden, I just helped them harvest the cherries a couple of months ago. Really exciting!
The funny thing is that right at the moment where I was thinking whether anyone grows coffee in Russia, you answered that question in the video! I jumped in y chair when I heard that line. I've googled afterwards, and they actually do grow coffee in my country! In Sochi! I don't know how to get hold of it yet, but I'll try to find out...

It is interesting that you mentioned Kew Gardens as that is the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the thumbnail for the video.
The building where I used to live in Brazil has a huge garden area with a bunch of plants. There were about 5 coffee trees there (the altitude in my city is 900m). I used to be so curious to taste that coffee! I suspect it was Canephora, because man, were those trees huge (3m at least). Unfortunately, that was not possible of course - people were allowed to pick the cherries - but I cannot picture those being processed properly (at least not by me) without all the space, equipment and technique for it.
In the US I won't get a chance to visit anytime soon. Glad I already signed up for the tasting. Can't wait!

All my coffee geekiness and excitement comes from her .. and of course from James Hoffman too ... and my partner (she is right next to me as a i type this and isn't pleased she's #3 on the list)

Here in Belfast, in the botanical gardens there is a coffee plant that I have seen fruiting a few times, but very few small fruits. i doubt if anyone has ever tired roasting it.
I have a small coffee tree in my house at 8500ft in Colorado USA. It has been producing berries for a few months. We have been picking them as the ripen. I hope to roast them when I get enough for a cup.
I’ve had coffee grown in China. It was surprisingly nice, had a lot of similar tasting notes and colour as well made black tea.

I used to work at a cafe as a student that had a tall potted robusta tree next to the entrance (southern Germany, so no great terroir either). The tree did flower and it did produce cherries, but only a small hand full spread out over the summer months. I remember nibbling on the cherries and thinking it would be nice to be able to process them.
Thank you for sharing your impressions on the UK grown coffee, it makes me think I would have had equivalent results.

Swiss Water's head office in Burnaby has a number of coffee trees that flower and fruit multiple times a year. You could easily harvest enough cherry for a sample roast.
Convincing someone to do the work picking and processing the coffee is a different story!

S.Korea is growing coffee in a specific place in greenhouse, they ferment it with lactic acid bacteria. It can apparently provide quite a complex profile to the coffee.
I've learned something new as well today.
My wife and I have grown, roasted and drank coffee from Brisbane Australia. We've got some very small coffee producers about 1.5 hours north and south as well, but we're about 5MASL so we certainly don't have great terroir or that height for density. We've got 3 trees going strong however!

Here we have many great coffee beans, especially those grown at the center of the island as it's cool and high in the mountains.
The best ones are sold in a coffee festival ("Festival del Acabe"), that have many types of beans.
Growing up in Brazil I never really stopped to think that there were places that were unable to grow quality coffee. In my young mind there was only South and Central American coffee and African coffee which was kinda difficult to find at the time over there. I was extremely surprised when I went to work in Hawaii and found out about Kona beans and how good their coffee was. That was the start of a journey of discovery for me which eventually led me to this channel :-)
Learning about the warm day and cool night cycle of Islands and how it (may) lead to good coffee got me thinking about which other Islands are producing coffee. Anyone here has a recommendation?
There’s a roastery in Brussels that, for a time, had a coffee labelled with a British flag. It turned out to be from St. Helena and I was very tempted to try it... I couldn’t justify the €18 euro a cup price though.

Niklas Schmalholz I buy from Or Coffee (now ana attento across the bourse). Corica has very special coffee if you like (such as chivet)
I used to buy from Corina but then I started buying my go to coffee from Stock or Barn biomarket (cheaper than farm and better). Corica for special occasions 😀.
I was freaking out a bit when the water was being poured without scales... but then remembered James knows what he is doing and undoubtedly knows the volume of the cupping bowl.
The video makes an interesting point....the rarity of coffee grown, harvested, processed and packed in most of it's normal growing areas.
I would love to see James trying coffee from Puerto Rico, there is a lot of great coffee being grown in the island. I think it would be nice to hear from you and to let the world know a little about the coffee from this island.
There's actually coffee grown in Portugal. A very small production on the São Jorge island in the Azores. Here's the reference Café Nunes (Café da Fajã dos Vimes) - Ilha de São Jorge
