I once knew a professor who was involved in excavating a Greek era city (Seleucid dynasty) in Syria but no one at that stage knew what the name of the city was as it never appears in any ancient maps or texts and there was no indication in the ruins as to what the place being excavated was called, However the Syrian civil war stopped all further work and I have often wondered what happened to the site.
where was it located in syria approximately?

Great video, sad to see both the wiping away of lives and history due to the earthquake. Thanks for spreading the message for aid.
2:37 Really loved how Babylon was recreated in the "Alexander" movie directed by Oliver Stone. I think that movie is pretty underrated. The long "Revisited" Cut definitely makes it justice
is it the same as "Final Cut"?
@@RomabooRamblings Yeah. Not to confuse with the "Director's" and "Ultimate" cut, by the way
@@OptimusMaximusNero that movie sucked big time, Babylon of 1916 Movie intolerance is far more magnificent.
Great vid. What a magnificent city Zeugma was, reduced to ruins by the Sassanids yet still yielding a considerable amount of precious mosaics. If only it, and any other ancient city in the region that this earthquake hit could survive a disaster again...
What an amazing video.
Completely in awe to the dedication of the archeological researchers.
Great that you also lifted the plight of the Syrian people!
Reninds me of a little known Phoenician colony with the same name. Dedicated to the Canaanite god Baal, as well as a lesser known deity Encahok.
The site today is called Zeugma Ba'alzencahok
Zegfma, in greek, literally, means “connector”.
Ironically, emergency excavations in advance of e.g. dam construction, can be a huge boon to a site's archaeology. Consider if you will how many sites languish as an underfunded dig in some provincial backwater, running once every two or three years when the grant gets approved. The flurry of often suddenly well-funded and publicised archaeological excavations can end up uncovering tons more than would have been found over years or decades otherwise. Another point is that while generally inaccessible, when flooded most of the buried stuff will remain in place. It can, theoretically - say in some far future where our dams have gone the way of the aqueducts - still be excavated. Also UNESCO status can end up being more of a headache than a plus. Red tape factor x9001. Cool video! Interesting to hear about this stuff in a classics context rather than another dam on (a tributary of) the Nile!
Great video... many thanks. Fascinating stuff. Working on a novel set in Syria in the 3rd century. Very usefull insight.
Really well done video! Good cause.
Zeugma nuts.

Chilling that Zeugma survived countless invaders and conquerors but was destroyed due to an earthquake. Nature is wild.

Earthquake😢
listing off virtues as your mistresses kinda comes off as a not-so-humble brag, not going to lie.
One of the oldest roman forts still standing and first allegedly built by the hittites.
Same thing happened with the dams on the Nile in Egypt. One of the lakes created was smack dab on the Nubian population still living there, displacing them from their homeland, as well as burying ancient archeology site.
Did the earthquake damage Zeugma? You didn’t specify
It's yet unclear
Jerash Is the second most preserved roman city after pompei
Zeugma? Anything like the city of Ligma?
Yeah, they're sister-cities
Can you make a video about the client state of Mauritania Tangitana? A follower from Morocco 🇲🇦
Heyo. A series doing a detailed tour of different Roman provinces was on my plans, but it may take a while to flesh out. There is a lot of interesting history for Mauretania during many periods, the later Mauro-Roman kingdoms being one of the examples.
@@RomabooRamblings Thank you!
@@RomabooRamblings could you make a video about the campaign season of the Romans against parthians and sassanids, and in your opinion, what could be achieved military and diplomatic?i think also that caracalla and Alexander severus could had vassalized the eternal enemy
What ongoing civil war? I'm living in Antep.
The one in Syria
Suprised every time I hear something about modern turkey I just get dissapointed.

Zugma nothing last forever. Or maybe?
it would be better to plant trees. zeugma for example can not have existed in a steppe.
Roman Empire: "Zeugma is ours, eastern barbarians!"
Sasanian Empire: "No! Zeugma is ours, Western invaders!"
Muslims: "Guys, guys. Everything belongs to Almighty Allah... which means we are the ones who should take care of the city" 😉

The earthquake is sad and all, and i hope they recover. But why should i help a people with money who just days before the earthquake wished me and my people death and destruction?
You shouldn't
