Little known history facts One day Alexander the Great was walking through the market. In front of him was a 5 year old boy with I his mother. Before Alexander could make his purchase the little boy ran out into the street in front of a moving carriage. Alexander leapt into action jumping into the street and saving the boy. The mother thanked him and offered Alexander some money. He told her to keep her money and patted the boy on the head. That little boy grew up to be Julius Caesar.

I always find it funny that because of the bust we have of Perikles, he will be forever envisioned as "that Greek guy wearing his helmet as a hat." Like, imagine you're a general taking off your overcoat on hot day in the middle of summer and you wrap it around your neck like a scarf ever so briefly until you get to your quarters and properly put it on the rack, but some photographer takes a photo of you that day and that becomes the iconic historical image of you. It might've been just a temporary thing, or a minor choice done one day for some specific reason, but now it's all anyone in the future ever remembers you by!

    • @Mar-vc8vk
      @Mar-vc8vk Před 11 měsíci +3

While I do not believe that quotes are literally made up, I do believe that the translation of a work can significantly influence the meaning of its passages. I recently compared a very modern translation of the Meditations from Penguin Classics with a much older translation from the 1900s that I happened to come across. To my surprise, there were substantial differences between these translations, which led me to question whether certain passages in the Penguin Classics version were made up. Additionally, the Penguin Classics translation seemed to divide certain passages, further contributing to the loss of the original meaning, in my opinion. I have also noticed similar issues in other works, such as those by Erasmus or Plato. While I do not believe that older translations are always better, it is important to keep in mind that you are likely not reading the orginal words of the author, but significantly edited ones.

I guess it's because none of his invasions failed, but if you were living in one of the countries he invaded there is no doubt you would've wanted him to fail. Maybe people today still love him because none of his victims back then wrote any complaints about him that survived, or maybe they were all censored.

Your idea is influenced by modern nationalist (some would say patriotict) sentiments. A slavic peasant in dalmatia in 1200 didn't care too much about venetians overlords. In 1920 a slavic worker in Istria did care about him being in Italy instead of Yugoslavia.
The point i'm bringing and can be easily seen during the fall of the western roman empire, people didn't care about who ruled on them as much as the ruler didn't try some extremist policies. A gallo roman peasant in Strasbourg didn't really care about the change of "banners". If there was peace then it's ok. When a national sentiment was created then the problem you mentioned arose (can be seen in France during the hunsred years war).

The Thucydides quote is actually paraphrasing an argument made by Erich Ludendorff in his 1935 essay Der Totaler Krieg (The Total War) in which he argues that war is the natural state of man and peace is merely an interval between a never-ending series of wars. The character who uses the quote in Wonder Woman is a fictional version of Ludendorff so perhaps the writers knew the source.

7:20 this one always annoyed me because whenever there’s a religious debate this quote is always brought up. The biggest logical issue is that it ignores how in many theologies devotion is an objective virtue, so claiming that the Gods should only care if you are virtuous but not care if you do something virtuous (like being devout according to some theologies) doesn’t make logical sense
The original quote makes more sense since it seems like it’s trying to say to be virtuous no matter what, even if there are no Gods, rather than trying to be some refutation of devotion towards the Gods

There was a time when Hadrian took a break from being an emperor to teach statesmanship to the next generation of bright young Romans. In the class was a young Germanic prince, getting a Roman education as a part of Roman attempts to civilise his tribe. When the subject of the Middle East came up, Hadrian went out of his way to explain that trying to kill all the Jews is futile because they will survive. All boys in the class took notes, but the germanic boy raised his hand and asserted that it was indeed possible, and Hadrian only thought otherwise because of his own inability to carry it out. Hadrian was annoyed by his arrogance and mocked him in front of the class, telling him to do it himself if he thought he was above the Princeps, causing the boy to swear that one day he would prove Hadrian wrong. That boy would grow up to become Adolf Hitler.

"Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn't mean politics won't take an interest in you."
I have a feeling that **I** may be the originator of this quote. I used to have a blog on politics about a decade ago. One of my favorite lines to use was "Just because you ignore politics doesn't mean politics will ignore you". I'm sure plenty of people have their own version of this, but I certainly found it interesting to see it in your video.

Bismarck has to be one of the men in history who has the absolute most quotes incorrectly attributed to him. Most of his most memorable quotes are arguably the fictional ones.
“The less people know about how sausages and laws are made, the better they’ll sleep at night.” -never said that
“Never believe anything in politics until it has been officially denied” -he never said that either
“Spain is the most powerful nation in the world. Century after century trying to destroy herself and still no success.” -nope, Bismarck didn’t say it.
“Some damned foolish thing in the Balkans will be the start of the next European war” -he probably never even said, the sourcing is very shoddy.

So I learned this from historia civilis. Ceasar seeing Brutus as one of the conspirators said "And you my son," according to the records of the time. Ceasar's mistress was Brutus's mom who was widdowed. Brutus was taken in as an apprentice of Ceasar and Ceasar veiwed Brutus as a son. Reality is better than Shakespeare, "Et tu Brute"

so, many quotes that we, people of the romance countries and Greece thought were real, were all invented by English people from the last 50 years... do you realise how weird is that for someone who descends from those places? even teachers know those quotes. It's very weird since the English speaking world is so detached
