    @AlBarathur Před 3 lety +110

    The medieval weaponry design department is much less stupid than we think. That being said, Principe is a compromise: it increases the thrust capability trading the range of the best cut. Meaning it will perform its best cuts nearer the hilt. It is still able to cut nearer the tip obviously, but the heavy cuts have to be done nearer the hilt. Basicly Knecht has more cutting reach, while Principe has better thrusts. Its an excellent trade off if you consider armor and how armor kind of countered reach power. The longer slash range of the Knecht however would allow it to be used better on horseback.
    But that ring that the Principe does after each cut...immensely satisfying.

    • @-Zevin-
      @-Zevin- Před 3 lety +9

      @Jim Nickles I appreciate the abusive testing Skal does but Mat Easton made a good point talking about how all swords will fail, break, bend etc. You could have a $100,000 sword made for a king and it can fail, it's all about context. The type of sword, the blade profile, the steel, how it is used, and what it hits.
      It's a shame to see that Principe fail but it should tell us two things; 1. Don't hold it against the sword it what it is and there is nothing faulty in it's manufacture it failed because of it's blade profile, how it was used, and what it hit. 2. This should let many people realize that some cheaper swords that "failed" abusive testing also shouldn't always be judged so harshly, it isn't as simple as cheap sword weaker than expensive sword. I could buy a 40$ axe right now that wouldn't have failed, but it's all about context.
      There is pros and cons in all sword design. A really excellent thin slicing blade can and will break, but it will cut and slice against flesh and clothing much better than something heavier. A important fact that most people fail to realize in modern times is a sword really only had to survive a single battle or kill a single person realistically, it's usually an emergency side arm, if you need to draw it and strike at someone and defend yourself, and the sword is beat to hell and back, bent and chipped apart, but you lived, the sword did it's job.

    the 🌊 cut patern is becaus of the shock wave that goes infront of the blade after initial impact warping the plestic bottle when it flexes so even if your cut is precisely perfect it would probably still have some warp to it becaus of the shock wave in the bottle

    The Knecht probably also cuts better the last couple of inches of the blade, thanks to the curve.

    • @LadZeroUltra
      @LadZeroUltra Před 3 lety

      i disagree, on other curved blades like scimitars and falchions the increased mass and wider blade at the end makes them cut better, there isnt more mass at the end of the knecht so i dont think the curve would have a meaningful effect.

    • @Sableagle
      @Sableagle Před 3 lety

      I'd call for a repeat using the tips to cut, but given that note about the fragility of the Principe blade, maybe that won't happen.

    • @mitchellmendoza6765
      @mitchellmendoza6765 Před 3 lety

      Sizeable_ Lad mass helps with hacking cuts, but mass is generally less necessary for other effective types of cut when talking about sword tips.

    • @sarojolibois6088
      @sarojolibois6088 Před 3 lety +2

      You actually need a very strong curve to make a sensible difference in cutting.
      Curved blades would often be curved just because of quirks during fabrication process, differences in hardness and thickness causing a curvature during hardening/quenching, etc...
      There isn't much advantage of a curved blade to a straight blade, it might open some different technics I guess (not an expert in hema so I might be wrong), and the curvature helps with edge alignement. Like, when you swing it, the curve of the blade naturally tends to guide the blade in a proper alignement.
      As said in previous comments some curved swords were better cutters not because of the curve, but because of differences in weight, and balance.
