@@canimade61 Yes, historically he was an African Slave brought to Japan by his masters, a group of Jesuit Catholic priests (back then Catholic church could own slaves, wonder why no one ever talks about that little piece of history), then he met Lord Oda Nobunaga, one of the most powerful warlords in Japan, who was captivated by his dark skin and his martial prowess. He bought Yasuke from the Jesuits and made him his personal Bodyguard, retainer, and some argue a samurai (Oda gave him a house and a salary, so he wasn't a slave anymore, plus he was always around Oda). He served Oda until Oda was betrayed by his top general, beseiged, and was forced to commit suicide (Sepuku). After that there's a lot of legends about what happened next. The guy who betrayed Oda would be defeated within a month by Oda loyalists under Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Oda's 2nd in command, one legend has it that Yasuke followed Hideyoshi and avenged Oda.
Seriously, Netflix just needed to tell this man's story, you don't need to add magic or demons, it's an incredible story of Rags to Riches, War/comradery, betrayal, and revenge, if you believe the legends.
As a Japanese, I wish this anime had dug the true aspect of Japanese history and culture deeper. Scriptwriters didn't seem to care anything beyond "honor" and "duty" stereotypes.
Yeah I could imagine, i once delved I to Japanese history, mainly about the three great unifiers. I read all this history and saw that yasuke was in the mix of it. When I heard he was getting his own anime based on his story, I didn’t expect giant mechas or Russian werewolves 💀. I know they only used yasuke as a base for the story I still feel that they could’ve been a little more true to the history if that makes sense.
Same bro, I was also disappointed with the added sci-fi & fantasy elements to it, and the lack of historical accuracy it presented. Good animation production tho.

@@missachin5054 Yasuke was let go by Akechi Mitsuhide and no one knows what happened to him. Interestingly, some documents states dark skin foreigners (notice plural!) were operating cannons in the castle at Shimabara Christian Revolt in 1637. If Yasuke was alive and joined the Revolt by keeping the faith, he would have been at least in the 70s and he might had half-Japanese children fighting along with him. Visualizing what he had been up to for the 50 years, and how he ended up joining the Revolt, would have been much interesting than magic and robots certainly.

Not much is known about the real Yasuke, except that he was taken into service by Nobunaga from an Italian Jesuit. Supposedly Nobunaga ordered the man to be washed as he didn't believe that his skin was actually black and was shocked to find out that it was. Nobunaga was also fascinated by how tall and strong he was.
He was said to have the strength of many men.

Considering black skin was considered to be that of a deity in Japanese religions back then, many people came to see him. He was quite famous
On top of that, racism basically saved his life. When Mitsuhide betrayed Nobunaga and captured Yasuke, he said that he was an animal that was not worthy of giving a warrior's death to. So I sent him back to the Jesuits, but no one knows where he got off to after that

2.) I don't know what you were expecting. It's a story about a black servant dude in a non-black homogeneous society (at least it was supposed to be). OF COURSE there's a good chance race will be discussed in the show. However, that doesn't mean that it's trying to push division.
3.) No one really knows if he was a samurai or not as there isn't much about his history. But a lot of people consider him to be one. That's why he's a samurai in the anime.
At the end of the day it's an animation with robots, psychic kids, and bear women. It shouldn't be taken too seriously. Not to be rude, but you're doing too much.

I thought the “ragtag” random villains/bounty hunters searching for the girl was a fun addition. It does take away any “traditionalism” the show was trying to portray but it was still fun to watch.

The fact that this man actually existed (despite not much being actually known about his life) makes it that much cooler.

This was inspired by a true story. Legend has it that he was towering over everyone and had incredible strength. The ruler didn't belive he was black and sent servants to scrub his skin. He end up living in Japan and hold a high position no other foreigner had at that time. It is well documented.
Nobunaga values only skills and talents, regardless of race, class, and gender, something his peers could not comprehend.

Exactly. I’m only on episode 2 and it’s so hard to keep watching. I love Yasuke, the animation, swordplay and setting. I came in expecting it to be somewhat accurate to Yasuke’s story, realistic, as well as an almost death note level of gritty, bloody and brutal.
First shit I saw was 6 story tall mech robots and blue dragon ballz looking ass auras. Then later on a cliche Russian chick using some beast transformation jutsu, and all these random, op characters. Completely ruined the history behind Yasuke. What a let down.

Have you watched the anime? There’s a bunch of robots, demons and other magical shit in the show for some reason despite it taking place in Feudal Japan, and it’s NEVER explained in any capacity. Like it’s supposed to be normal or something. This was the leading cause of this anime’s death in my opinion.

Fun fact: When Yasuke was heading to Nobunagas palace, people would trample over each other. They couldn't believe that someone could be so tall and dark.

This show turned out to be real bogus. Not going to lie. I'm so disappointed. The robots and mystical aspects ruined the show. I was hoping for a show similar to Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin. An accurate setting in feudal Japan that told Yasuke's story from how he came to Japan to how he served Oda Nobunaga and his exploits in battle. You know, an actual history lesson of sorts! Missed opportunity. 2 out of 10 for me.

The worst written villains are the ones who have nothing redeemable about them; they're misogynistic, racist, super creepy/rapey, and just the cruelest on the planet, makes for a super boring story imo. It's why I loved Killmonger so much, actual depth to an "evil" choice. I mean look at the Mongols, they respected women and were treated equally with land and combat skills, they tried taking over the world.

It's funny, because there's a ton misunderstood about Nobunaga. Partly that he used the reputation of being cruel and ruthless to his advantage. When other Daimyo likened themselves to gods, he sarcastically said he was a demon. He was actually one of the most progressive and strategically-minded Daimyo of his time. Just recently, the Japanese are finally starting to portray him in a different light.
This is actually based on a true story... there was a black man who after being freed from slavery was awarded the samurai title...But after nobunaga died, the black samurai was sold to a slave trader... The reality is harsh... 😑😑

Honestly this sucked all around. Afro Samurai was literally 10 times better. Disappointing.

@@thedawg229 Yeah it was just ridiculous. So being a strong black man in fantasy feudal Japan makes you a superhero apparently. It kinda felt like a Woke propaganda cartoon. On top of the dumb story, the fight scenes weren't even good, and the animation was bad compared to things like Afro Samurai, and overall Yasuke was pretty cliche, boring and pointless. The voice acting was also terrible and Yasuke just wasn't very interesting or cool at all as a character. Afro Samurai was so much better and anyone who wants an anime like this should just go watch that instead.

@@albertrex6851 Female samurai exists, though they usually guard the home rather than go on the battlefield. They're trained with weaponry and many home-making, guest-tending, information gathering skill, vital to their husband's diplomacy.
@@albertrex6851 Yes, they have their own specialize weapon called Naginata, it looks similar to a spear. They are protectors of homes not to be send on battlefields, they are defensive units if anything.
For those who don't know it, Yazuke was real, he was an african slave of portuguese traders that traveld to Japan, and there he became a Samurai and friend of one of the most importan men of the time: Oda Nobugana. Oda Nobunaga was a man really opened to new ideas and things of the "outside world", when he met Yazuke he was really excited and glad, he said "What a wonderful world is out there, there are even men of dark skin!" he also admired the physique of Yazuke (btw he gave him his name) saying he was what a warrior should be: Tall, strong and athletic.

I was disappointed to know it wasn't based on actual history when I first saw the trailer, but holy shit, was I taken off guard! It was perfect! Flying Lotus did a phenomenal job composing the soundtrack. I plan to do something like that one day as I advance my music career.

This is so true. Don’t get me wrong I’m all for the narrative. I just felt that that specific narrative didn’t fit this specific show if you get me. I say that because this is one of those rare occasions when a black person has their own anime, and to add to it, that person had their own ties with Japanese history, but I feel that the entire anime just ignored and disregarded that completely.
I feel that the story and narrative this show gave was a good one, just that it wasn’t entirely right for the type of show this was meant to be, or could’ve been. Like in another show the narrative could’ve made the girl the main character and yasuke more of that companion side character. But if the anime was supposed to be based on yasuke, then at least make it more historically accurate
And I get that just because he’s the mc, doesn’t necessarily mean that the entire world had to revolve around him, but still it would be nicer if it was more historically accurate

@@jonesm8570 I have. But in the 80s, 90, and early 2000s, most depictions of black people in anime, were they made in the West would be considered really racist stereotypes by all standards. I mean look at One Punch Man. That's still very recent. I never got offended by it because I realised that that their history is different from ours, and that those depictions come from a different place than something like a minstrel show in America. But it's still nice that it's getting better. Especially since I watch anime so much.

Crazy how good anime can only get 1 season.
All right, I like this. Definitely takes liberties with Yasuke's IRL history but that's never stopped anyone from turning Jeanne d'Arc into an anime heroine or Abraham Lincoln into a vampire slayer. I'm definitely adding this to my watch List. :)

The issue is, those stories already have many adaptations where they’re played straight. This is pretty much the only media about yasuke so it’s weird that it’s so fantasized

I saw all 6, its crap. It gets even more into fantasy later without explaining anything. And gets a bit boring.
Do not like the mecha and the magic much either yet the characters so far(writing this after watching the first episode) seem interesting,the different backstories look lively enough.
Even if I am on the same boat as all of you and do not know how much fantasy is injected on the story,watch at least the second episode and then decide,it is a little series after all.
