Worst Ever Locomotives of Pakistan Railways

  • The Locomotives in question, primarily sourced from China, have proven to be one of the most unfortunate acquisitions for Pakistan Railways. Among them, the DPU20/30 Locomotives, with a staggering 69 out of 69 units grounded after just 10 years of service, are now scattered across different locations in Pakistan. Their condition remains dismal, and the prospect of their restoration is virtually non-existent.The second category of locomotives, the ZCU 20/30 series, is no less disheartening. Nearly half of the 58 units were grounded after a mere 4 years of operation, leaving them far from reliable for ongoing service. As a result, the locomotive sheds of Pakistan Railways have transformed into graveyards for these Chinese diesel-electric locomotives, representing a colossal loss of millions of dollars for Pakistan. The sight of these grounded locomotives paints a stark picture, akin to a cemetery for Chinese locomotives in Pakistan. 🪦
    here are 2 worst ever locomotives of Pakistan Railways, I tried my best to get each and ever facts to explore the real details, most of the technical details are taken by Pakistan Railways high officials, video is based on correct data and recent experiences....
    both locomotives are made in china A catagory locomotives,
    DPU~30 and 20 locomotives were imported in 2002 having 3000 and 2000 horsepower with 4stroke Diesel engines, all locomotive,s were grounded in 2012/13 after having major faults in every locomotive, I have already made a video on that issues and the link of that video is also available in the Description below, total quantity of that DPU locomotive,s are 69 and nowadays all 69 locomotives are grounded and total working years are 10.
    other worst locomotive is ZCU30 which is also made in china locomotive having 3200 horsepower, total 29 locomotives were imported and 5 were locally assembled in Pakistan locomotive factory risalpur, these locomotives were imported in 2014/15 and almost 22 locomotives are grounded due to failure of its prime mover which is Chinese variant of CAT-175 16 DIESEL ENGINE,
    total working years of ZCU30 locomotives are not more then 5 years.... so this is one of the ever built worst locomotive of Pakistan Railways,
    currently Pakistan Railways is not dealing with both of the locomotive,s for their rehabilitation,

    Appreciate your honesty. Across the world, Chinese locomotives are a failure. Malaysia had imported Chinese locomotives which failed. Finally they leased Alco locomotives from India. GE and GM are the best at present.

    Very logically explained Sir.
    In my humble opinion, initial cost main Chinese Loco zaroor saste padte hain par life span aur total lifecycle cost nikala jaaye toh they are actually costlier.
    GE/EMD/Alco/Alstom/Siemens are much better.

    Thankful to you for this real information. I am so sad that have no words to second you I am really very Sad and Strictly Against Such Chinese Products so called Cheap, Only a difference of 50 Million Rupees in price from that of GE ...? WOULD HAVE GOT 20 / 25 GE Locomotives which would have not let see us these Losses. Great Sorrow on the wisdom of Purchasers of these Bogus, Outdated and Copied Technology Locomotives. Even Indian Products are preferable over these Fraud Chinese Products.

      Indian manufactured diesel electric engines are as good as GE engines,cheaper,easy availability of spares,less maitainance but Pakistan will never go for Indian product.

    Excellent job sir... You explained this complex analysis in very lucid manners.... Huge respect for that...
    Firstly I want to say that PR should make an organisation which should judge the quality factor of locomotives and rolling stock...In IR we have an organisation called RDSO, which takes immerse trial on all types locomotives whether it's transfer of technology (tot) or self made , these extreme trials takes almost 1-1.5 years after that they give the approval to IR, whether this locomotives or rolling stock is working according to the given standards, even our wag12 went under rdso trials for almost 2 years then it received the approval, nowadays it is pulling 6500-7700 Tons heavy trains at speed of 120kmph at some parts of partially operational dfc...
    Secondly it's that making things with tot would have been a better idea... Atleast PR could have rectified the faults indigenously....
    Anyways let's hope that things get better for PR....

    I was much curious where ZCU 30 is now as it's totally disappeared from Main Line within short time and I have also asked from a driver for that. Today you showed the reality so now our country should take this issue with china and there should be a useful solution for this loss and national media should also take this issue in headlines.

    faheem bhai i have already seen your vlog on these locomotives and TBH i feel very sad that how the authorities wasted taxpayer money and no one here to accountable them :( these are not the locomotives but our money which is dumped in the yard. there should be some way either to reuse them or send back to its company for repair. our railway come to this point just because of this type of decisions. i always pray for our railway to come back

    it's absolutely true that ,Even though china might have one of the best and largest high speed rail network,when it comes to diesel locomotives, their performance are not so good... majority of high horsepower Diesel electric locomotive used in China are based on American model... Whether it's 700 hxn5( GE ES59ACI) heavier version of wdg6g(GE ES58ACMI), 330 Hxn3(EMD SD90MAC) And nj2(GE C38AChe)... For diesel electric locomotive American locomotives are best...

    Has Lahore shed been able to refurbish any of them successfully? Whatever can be scrapped, should be done quickly, else, it will all be looted part by part, or nature will slowly dissolve it.
    Partial privatization and professional management may be the solution to revive the organization. Strong leadership is also required. Over the years, IR has had good Railway Ministers and that's the reason for a significant improvement and change.

    Indian Railways has ~1,000 diesel engines rendered surplus due to record production of Electric Locomotives over the last 5-6 years. The engines are powerful, rated 3,100/3,300/4,000hp and, are in great shape. Pakistan Railways may approach IR before the Locos are scrapped.

      @@essaar1956 The Pakistan Rly hierarchy was doing rounds of our Railway Ministry for used diesel engines in 2013 during Nawaz Sharif's tenure. Had the engines been given, interdependence would come in play and, India could pin them down, in case, for spares as well as periodic overhauls. However, with Nawaz at the helm of affairs, Pakistan wouldn't play mischiefs in the first place. In fact, Nawaz was done away with by its Deep State for reversing the very state policy of Pakistan, ie, terror. This was at odds with its Establishment and hence, he'd become anathema by them.
      It was beyond the anything but statecraft like people in the bureaucracy & polity when it was time to support Nawaz all out.

    آپ کا درد مندانہ احساس جو صرف اور صرف ملک و قوم کے لئے ھی ھے قابل تحسین ھے۔۔۔۔ اس سلسلے میں میرے خیال سے ریل انجن بہت صحیح ھوں گے مگر یہ انجن جن لوگوں کی ذمہ داری رھے یہ ان کی غلیظ نیتوں کی بھینٹ چڑھ گئے۔۔۔۔ آپ نے ان انجنوں کی جو روزانہ کی بنیاد پر دیکھ بھال کی بات کی صرف وھی ان کے ناکارہ ھونے کا سنب بنی۔۔۔ میرے سننے میں یہ بھی آیا تھا کہ جیسے کسی گاڑی کی لبریکیشن کے لئے آئل درکار ھوتا ھے وہ آئل بیچ کر کھایا جاتا رھا اور آئل مخصوص وقت پر بدلا نہیں گیا اور ایک دفعہ کہ ڈالے ھوئے آئل کو تین سے چار گناہ وقت تک ان انجنوں میں استعمال کیا گیا۔۔ ظاھر ھے نتیجہ تو یہی ھونا تھا۔۔۔ نہ صرف پاکستان ریلوے بلکہ ھر ادارے میں ایسے غلیظ لوگوں کی بھر مار ھے جو ملکی ترقی میں بڑی رکاوٹ ھے۔۔۔۔ ھم اپنی گاڑیوں کا آئل فلٹر بہت باقاعدگی سے بدلتے ھیں مگر ملکی مشینری کو زنگ آلود بنانے میں ھمارا کوئی ثانی نہیں۔۔۔ ایسے میں ملک کی ترقی ناممکن ھے۔۔۔

    My friend was head of GE south asia. He literally begged pakistan to buy the GE engine and not the chinese engine---. But in the end---a terrible decision was made to go with the chinse engine. That company had no experience in building diesel locomotives---but very good at giving kickbacks---.
