Great video, thanks for sharing! I wanted the Remarkable the moment I saw it but, personally, couldn't really justify the purchase. I already had a Kindle Paperwhite, so having both just seemed...over the top. I love reading on e-ink and I'm hoping I'll enjoy writing with it just as much. Really looking forward to having my notebooks, pdfs, and books all in one place with the e-ink experience. I'm trading in my Paperwhite and getting the Scribe.

@@JakeReevesVideo According to Amazon they will support Kindles and Amazon Fire tablets for up to 5 years after the last official sale date (Discontinuation date) of any given Kindle or Fire tablet. Aka...You buy a Kindle 10th generation on August 11th, 2021. But then on November 8th of 2022 Amazon discontinues the Kindle 10th generation you bought. The device will be supported until November of 2027 that means. (Note: 3rd party sellers don't count. Its last sale date by Amazon directly.)
The all-new 11th-generation Kindle Basic also adds new features to what the 10th generation already offered. So the new Kindle "11th Generation bumps the resolution up to 300 PPI. It also adds a new dark mode. (No warm like the Paperwhite though.) Plus it improves on the thick bezels slightly while creating the 6" inch screen size. Plus the biggest improvement is native support for USB-C. 🙂
Thanks Jake, as always a really thorough analysis and key to watch if considering this device. From this review it sounds that for me it’s too early to adopt, unsurprisingly like most versions 1.0 of a new product, and for the approx price point as the remarkable 2, does not compare as well. Love your template and will check out your other videos on this since this came out, so it’s definitely promising! Let’s see what those software updates do! 😊

My scribe is an “over glorified” oasis at this point… The notebook and note taking ability is seriously lacking. Amazon better be doing regular feature updates on the Scribe.

I bought the Kindle Scribe about a week ago. My primary use is as a glorified/oversized e reader, though I do use the stylus for making notes or scribbles. The only problem I have with this is how the case works. It doesn't snap into it, like the case for my Paperwhite. I've experienced a few instances that, when reading on my bed, I accidentally separated the kindle from its case and the Scribe almost fell on my fase when opening it for use.
Ya, I have the case and will probably do a review of it at some point. I think they intended it more for transport and desk use than for holding while reading - other magnets make me think it’s suppose to be taken in/out regularly and the case is too sharp to comfortably hold like a normal ereader… I like it, but I don’t think they were clear in how they intended it to be used

Honestly, the ability to block auto rotate would be a big help. The only thing I really miss are the physical page torn buttons on the Oasis.

Thanks for commenting - I’ve started taking notes for a follow up video - likely a 1-year later kind of thing. The software update has added more pen functionality (best of which is copy-paste in my opinion)… but other shortcomings are still present. All-in-all, still really glad I purchased one - I use it daily with the agenda template I made for it ✌️
As a person watching this 6 months later, I have two burning questions… 1) Have there been any meaningful software updates to improve the shortcomings that you would have highlighted? 2) Will you be releasing a 2024 edition of your agenda for e-ink devices? Thanks in advance for your reply!

Is it possible to add Audible books to Collections set up for e/books_ For Example, I have a Civil War collection and own both Kindle e-books and Audible books of this genre. May I store them in the same Civil War collection in my Library? I can't figure out how to do it but thought you may have found a path.

Nice! Ya, I’m pretty satisfied overall as well 👍 There is room for improvement still, but I’m somewhat optimistic that they will be able to address most things via software fixes 🤞
Well, is it a tablet though with its stunning limitations. Compared with the likes of Onyx Boox, Scribe is basically just a large-sized Kindle e-reader at the momet. Scribe has like three apps, reading, notebook (shockingly rudimentary), and a browser (also barely usable).
I am going to perhaps purchase one of these devices during this year's Black Friday sales

I teetered on the edge for the Scribe as I already have an iPad pro, but this review pushed me over and to hell with the price it's only money...........I'll be mostly using it for designing, sketches and note as I'm an avid inventor.......having drawings that got covered in side notes as ideas occur will be a thing of the past and will now save a lot of paper and sticky notes.
Edit.......wowie.....just received the Scribe 64gb model...... in 2 days from Amazon..........now to learn how to navigate the various things to make it work.......I inadvertently created 11 pages of scribble in book no.1 just messing with the pencil.
Edit 2.....i.ve just watched this video 4 times......it's so instructive.
Did you do any post processing of your video? My Scribe doesn't have near the contrast yours has at the same screen settings, and I'm considering RMA-ing it.
There is a little bit of brightness and contrast boost - but not a lot. If you want to message me on Instagram, or email me, I can send you a raw image from my phone of the screen for comparison.
My first time on your channel and it's great! I got a Kindle Scribe and fine the same conclusions. I do, however, not like the Premium Pen with the little button as I hit it by accident all the time!

Lol, there is an ancient Sony e-reader around here somewhere. It had a weird toothpick sized dumb stylus and a notebook. You could take notes in books but they were sticky notes and I think, some went onto another page. You could highlught books and PDFs too. t's been a long time since I've seen it so i don't remember everything. Of course the Scribe has many more features but isn't it sad that our note-taking experience hadn't improved in about 10 years? The Sony did have some features that the new devices lack - headphone jack, mp3 and e-book players and a full-size SD card. Too bad the screen was so dim. It was ahead of its time.
i don't use ebooks at all but i am looking for a good note taking device, I have been looking at the scribe and the remarkable 2, I am more learning towards the remarkable 2 becaue the writing experience is exceptional, and the software is amazingly good. Is there anything a scribe can do that is a better writing experience than the remarkable be side it being cheaper.

I have my doubts about the kindle products. Lately the reader has become quite unstable and slow, and while I still enjoy the xray feature, others like search or highlighting have become cumbersome. Reporting typos still works but it's not even looked by Amazon. So I really wouldn't hold my breath in the hope that an update for the scribe will improve it much. And it's so expensive. I wonder if the remarkable 2 or the notea aren't the better options.
All very valid points. They have committed to some updates, but I would be surprised if they go as far as my hopes 🤞

I am wondering if you would consider a simple update to it, since Amazon released a software update a few months ago which addressed some of the weaknesses that were so glaring? I am considering purchasing one, but am a bit hesitant about it. Thank you!
Thanks, I’ve considered doing an update, but haven’t gotten around to it. They did address some things, but I need to dig deeper to make sure I’m up to date with it. I still use the Scribe daily as my agenda, but that hasn’t relied as heavily on all of the features

I’m thinking of ordering one now (Prime day deal) and really trying it very thoroughly in every area I can think of to see how it stacks up, and return it if it doesn’t work significantly well for me. I use an iPad, rocket books, and a paper bullet journal. Main draw for me is having a larger Kindle and notebooks for my studies and much notetaking - with a better writing screen than iPad and the distancing myself from such immediate distraction as is resident under my fingertips on the iPad.

Do you think they will ever make a smaller kindle scribe? I would love if I could write on my kindle paperwhite and use it as a portable small e-ink notepad.
It’s an intriguing thought and I suspect you’re not alone wanting that, but I’m not sure they will. The Scribe form factor is about as small as I think most people would want for writing, so they would have to just add this to the existing paperwhite in order to avoid adding too many competing products to their lineup. I’m not sure if enough people would want it in the smaller form factor to justify the added costs that would be necessary to replace the existing paperwhite device.
It erases beyond the previewed area because it eases vector lines. If you drew something with a thick line it will raise that whole line segment.

Yes, that’s a nice Kindle feature that you can see a few times in the video 👍 Good point
The main feature that would get me to switch to a digital tablet would be OCR of handwritten notes so I can search my notebooks. Without that feature, it just feels line a giant toy to me. Toys are great, but aren't a paper notebook replacement. (The footnote format also puts me off - if I write on a page, I want to see what I wrote in context.)

The 10.2” measurement is of the corner-to-corner diagonal distance. This is how digital screens are measured.

I have a Remarkable and Kindle scribe. The Kindle Scribe is a fabulous Kindle, but its writing capabilities are very basic and not really usable for most of my purposes. However, Amazon seems intent on adding features. First of all, I wish we could send PDFs to folders. You can now add folders within folders. Way to go Amazon. I would also like to see a lot of comprehensive features the Remarkable lets you do: use a seperate template for each page, move documents from folder to folder, duplicate documents, lasso move, cut, paste text and drawings, move pages, and create custom templates from a pdf (Remarkable can't do this).
What about cases for the Scribe? Are you going to get one?

Hoping the updates you mentioned can be done via updating the firmware and not the actual Kindle Scribe. I am weary of buying the Scribe only to have Amazon come out with a new version in a few months.
The posting on Amazon now mentions software updates are planned for the coming year. I am optimistic that some things will be corrected, like better file management and pen options. Eventually a new hardware version will come out, but I would be surprised if that happened in the first year. Just my speculation though 👍

Potentially, but that may be in part dictated by processing power… not too sure. The search would be really great, but there are a lot of things that go into OCR, so I suspect it wouldn’t be as easy to implement as some of the other features.

Just letting you all know there is a bug with the scribe. Just returned mine. The issue is when writing in middle of the screen there’s like a “bubble” that doesn’t allow you to write in or curves the e ink around. So for example if you were to draw a straight line through this problem area of the screen, it curves the ink around it and also does the same with the eraser. Not sure if anyone else is experiencing it but if it’s a software issue it’s likely to pop up on the new device they’re sending me. Which I told the customer service means they need to send out an update asap
Very interesting. I haven’t experienced that with mine yet, so hopefully it was just a hardware issue with the one you had before! Whereabouts was it? I’ve drawn pretty extensively all around and written full page notes without this cropping up yet 🤞
You have something, perhaps a case, with a magnet on it in that location. The Kindle is an EMR (Electro-magnetic Resonance) device.
@@ianthefirth so I was able to fix it. Apparently the magnet from the amazon case must have rubbed up against the screen because by moving the magnet from the case on that trouble spot it somehow corrected itself!

Their case has a magnet and somehow it must have touched the screen because when I rubbed the magnet over the trouble spot it corrected itself. Weird that Amazon would make their case for the device with a magnet and not warn people it might screw up their screen…

Can anyone tell me how to turn off recommendations in kindle SCRIBE
You can’t! Amazon SUCKS at letting users actually make the “Home” screen theirs! Absolutely appalling !
@@enigmo20 Yes, that is a HUGE annoyance! I never look at the recommendations and never will. I hate having all that wasted space, which should be used to show a full screen of my recent books. It's appalling that Amazon doesn't allow it to be turned off.
Coming from using an old Boyue Mimas note-taking ereader I bought in 2019, the Kindle Scribe is incredibly limited. I got it at a bargain price though, so I'm still trying to decide if it's worth keeping.
The other thing I miss is having a small toolbar across the top on all pages (can be hidden) that shows the time, wifi icon, and a few quick access buttons like the light adjustment button. With the Scribe you have to tap at the top and then pull down the menu to adjust the light... and the worst part is that as you adjust the light, you're unable to see the light intensity and warmth until you close the menus. Then if it's not right, you have to go through that whole process again, and hope you choose better.
Another aggravation is that the display settings only offers two size choices, and the "large" setting on a 10" 300ppi screen is still very small. The dictionary results and book descriptions are mostly unreadable. (The big draw of a Kindle for many people who don't have perfect eyesight is being able to read larger font books, but then they make the rest of the text on the device too tiny to read.)
The Scribe reading display options also leave a lot to be desired. The narrowest margins are still way too big and waste a lot of space, which is especially silly since you can't write notes in the margins. (Except for PDFs sent to Kindle.) It should also have a setting for space between paragraphs, which makes the page look so much nicer and much easier to read. My Android based eNote devices allow the user full control of a book's appearance.
Lastly, the palm rejection on the Scribe is poor, especially compared to my Mimas. I very often accidentally get new pages made while writing on the Scribe, which is pretty annoying.

Can you jump from page to page. like from 3 to 80
You can swipe up from the bottom of the page in a PDF or book to get a “timeline” like view that allows you to linearly scroll through all the pages - depending on how large of a file you’re dealing with, the responsiveness and ease of use varies 👍
The disappointing part is that you can't listen to the reading and follow the reading at the same time, something useful for my son. Something the kindle app can do. In the Scribe is either kiddle or audible, not both. I hope a software update can change that.
Can you send documents or pdf files to a printer email to print what you need after the note taking?
Hmm… I haven’t tried that. I don’t have a printer with an email address, so I’ve had to do it the old fashioned way with a computer in between ;)

It’s pretty neat! Not as portable as the Paperwhite, but if you think you’d use the pen (however simple it is for now) it may be worth the update to the Scribe. It’s become my go-to agenda now
@@JakeReevesVideo SO, I ended up getting it and got it yesterday. I love it. Its honestly the right size for a reading a whole full page instead of 1 page turning into 3 in the small one I was using. The Note section is pretty neat. Defiantly will help me with my college work for taking notes and what not. Also easier to read manga/comic as well so I don't have to zoom in all the time to read the tiny font of some of the bubbles. I got the fabric cover like yours and I like, I mostly use the vertical style at at my desk and the sorta horizontal When I'm laying down or chilling on the couch. Your right about the pen not moving from the magnetic side with cover, pretty strong too. I had not problems with it. I use the little pen sleeve as tab like you mentioned.

I still think amazon could allow so much more (and by consequence, add so much more value)with this product it feels like a missed potential. That aside, thanks for the video, always wanted to see how it's like breaking one of those displays up.
I agree… there are a lot of little things that I think could really make it the best device available. It’s still good, but the potential for more is real 👍

But as a lot of video reviews, and any of them shows if we can or not support the hand palm on the screen while using the pen to write.
It's an essential feature if you plan to use it to write a long text.
I’m able to get away with resting my palm on the screen most of the time, but every once in a while it forces a page turn or zooming… hopefully something that improves over time, but it hasn’t stopped me yet 👍
I hope they improve the palm rejection. It's most frustrating in the note app where I keep getting new pages while I'm writing.
Can't a pdf be opened with word and edited
Can everyone tell me how to write on the PDF files I sent from the “send to kindle” app?
Are you able to access the file in your Kindle library on your Scribe? If so, do you see the small writing menu icon on the left or right side about 2/3 up the page?
@@JakeReevesVideo I can access the doc in the library too, but there was nothing on the page when I opened my file...I tried to send it through the App, the Web, or email, but none of them worked or showed the writing symbol.
Is the PDF file locked in any way? Password protected when you access it on a PC, etc.?
@@JakeReevesVideo Thank you for checking with me still...No, they are not locked. The files worked perfectly okay in GoodNotes on IPad, but I still like to use my Kindle Scribe if possible.
Hmm… that is very strange. I know that some files with DRM will prevent writing, but if that’s not the case, the only other thing I can think is regarding when they were added to your library. Did you upload them to your Kindle library before you owned the Scribe? If so, you may have to remove the files and reupload them to your kindle library. That would be my last attempt.
can you write on pdfs without sticky notes?
Yes, most of the time you can, unless it is a protected PDF, in which case, you cannot use the pen.

Sadly, no. Bluetooth is only for connecting headphones on the Scribe, and even this is restricted by geography (Canadian versions don’t allow Audlible on Scribe for some reason).

Yes, as of the beginning of March - I haven’t gotten around to making a video about it yet, but it has added a few new brush types (including pencil, marker and fountain pen), as well as the ability to create nested folders inside of notebook folders for better organization, and a few other small things. Better now, but there’s still more I’d like to see 🤞

I don't get why fixating on writing notes, I like typing more, it's faster and way more convenient, writing is just a big step back.
I think both are important, but I’ll concede that most of the time I would prefer the organization and speed of typed notes if it is nothing but words. For me, the “writing” value comes when I need to sketch and annotate ideas/designs, etc. then, it is faster for me to pick up a pen 🖊️
They need Cornell notebook paper!

You can’t add third party templates to the notebooks section on the Kindle Scribe. They get added as PDFs that go into your reading library, but you have full writing freedom like the notebooks.
I am planning on designing a template and releasing it on Etsy, where I have my agenda template. How many pages would you want in each notebook? They unfortunately are fixed length, so you can’t just add more pages on the Scribe like the notebooks.
@@JakeReevesVideo I have tried adding some Cornell pages to my documents and even wrote on them. The lines were too faint, though. And, even though it would be black and white, I’d want some designs. That would be nice! I wonder if they're working on a Color Scribe? The E-Ink color screens have finally matured enough to be worthwhile.
Very disappointed with this Kindle, but thanks for the overview! I didn't buy it for the notebooks (I love pen and paper). Instead, I wanted to be able to mark pages of the books I read. And #1, most books I'm interested in don't allow the feature at all, and #2: you can't write on the book itself -- only make notes if you're lucky enough to read a book that allows this feature. I'm very tempted to return the Kindle. The only thing I like is the good quality, large layout which allows for a more pleasing reading experience than my old Kindle. But even that's not always useful. At home it's great. But when traveling I prefer a smaller Kindle that fits in my purse, which means I can't sell my Oasis as I planned to do. Overall it's a big disappointment. For now, I may just stick with paper and fountain pen. (I paid an arm and a leg for a fantastic fountain pen. I might as well use it until Kindle comes up with a better Scribe.)
Why would anyone want this instead of a tablet?
For reading ? it has weeks of battery life. I also have a tablet and reading on it is fine, but Scribe beats it for weight, battery life and paper like appearance. The pen may be a nice add for some people, but not for me. I really wanted the screen size as my sight isn't great and I like a large font.
Poor person's Scribe: notebook + pen/marker + highlighter + cellphone's camera + PDF maker software at work.
You're carrying around almost the same stuff (assuming you already carry your cellphone). You can move the pages of your PDF around before making it. You can't erase anything. (Unless you use a pencil instead of a pen!) More complicated; more time. Way less money.

This was handy. The only downside, is that I already have an Ipad Pro 12.9 that I barely use the Pencil for, (I think I put it back in the box for all that I used it.) but, If i could adapt or convert frequently updated web novels with calibre, i'd look at eink again, or switch back to kindle.
The A4 page layout is familiar, so it's tough to switch to the 8" or 10" format, but it seems easier to hold and skim/resume. When I had the recent paperwhite, it was okay, but I had to really be 'in the mood' to read, and the lack of buttons didnt' help with page fumbling or moving pages by accident while holding the case/bezel.
I was using calibre very early on, and it's bloated java for ~2-3 years when I was converting novels for reading on android/windows mobile phones in 2004 (good old O2 XDA II mini... you will be missed. sort of.) -2012, later, switching to audiobooks and so on, until I could get videos stored and switched to Plex for travelling, watching and holidays.
Until the Kindle became better, I only ever used the app version, due to the lack of backlighting. So, I'm not sure about the scribe/pen since i'd take some time getting used to switching in and out of notes unless I needed the feature. Not needing notes, but needing an organiser, perhaps. Knowing it can only write PDFs and make note pages... loses some of the appeal, but it wasn't like i was a potential customer anyway.
Thanks for the detailed comment - I totally get where you’re coming from. It is a niche product for sure and one that needs some updates to be a little more mainstream. Personally, I prefer it for agenda-ing compared to my iPad. The pen/paper feel is better 👍
