It's rare to see a positive story about a witch dosing a whole town with drugs. 💚💛💙
Witch is a bitch! Great video.
These late 60s/ early 70s films have the best jazz soundtracks and narration. 💕
I hadn't seen this in over 40 years!! I remember when they made it and invited the whole town to come and eat pancakes!! What a nice surprise to watch it again and see my father, my grandparents, my aunt and uncle, and my best friend's mother from 1969!! What a joy!!
@@Oshiiiiiiiiiiii this was filmed in Goshen, New York and the house is still there!
I just wanted to let you know how wide reaching this film was - I watched this in elementary school in Toronto, Canada in the early 90s over and over again. I searched for it for years. Can't believe I actually found it. So cool your family was in it!
That's awesome!!!!!
That's amazing
@@nk3582 So awesome
I remember seeing this while I was in the third grade as well as in an episode of THE CBS CHILDREN'S FILM FESTIVAL. 😃 Interesting to hear the voice of Burgess Meredith.
This is by far the best, cleanest version of this film on CZcams. Much appreciation for uploading it. I love the nostalgia this offers. The actress who plays the witch is a true professional! And the narration by Burgess Meredith aka Mick makes it even cooler.
Thanks
I have been looking for this for years. I thought I'd never be able to find it. Thank You CZcams! I have a vague memory of watching this in the late 1980s (possibly 1987 or 1988) in elementary school in a class in which the male teacher enjoyed showing old short films on a projector. Other than this I remember watching the short cartoon Riki Tiki Tavi. This one was so crazy and weird. It must have been in October for Halloween. I thought this was an anti drug short and had nothing to do with witches or comedy. Now that I see it again it's hilarious (could still be about drugs; it was from the sixties after all) the actress playing the witch is Hermione Gingold. What a blast from the past. And it's also interesting how so many commenting on here also remember watching this in their own grade school as children.
This and The Red Room Riddle were some of my fondest film reel memories from primary school. I can still hear the crackle of the projector.
I remember watching this in my elementary third grade classroom, around 1978. I always thought the title was "The Witch's Pancakes". I searched for so long to see it. So glad to finally see it again after nearly 44 years! Can not believe I remember so much of it! So glad to have it posted on CZcams. Will perhaps show it to my 4th grade students! Great to relive the old days!
I remember seeing this in school when I was a child. For some reason it really left a good impression on me.
Saw this in Catholic school, 1st grade. Wonderful introduction to psychedelics and being a single mom.
Thank you for uploading this - like many, I saw this in 70s grade school and not since. It was great to see it once again. The special effects after the boy and mom (and neighbors) ate these pancakes was probably the thing I most held with me (I’d forgotten about the witch, if that is possible).
“My secret.” 🙄
Old hippy witch dosing the whole damn neighborhood!
Just today, my 50-year-old ass had a strange flashback. "Remember that weird movie they used to show us in elementary school on rainy days in the 70s? Something about magic pancakes with weird dots when people ate them?" One Google search later and here I am. Thank you for uploading this. Between this and "The Red Balloon"... man...
What a wonderful little childrens film. it was good as it's short, but a longer version would've been lovely too. I'm here for Gingold, she was one of our favorites when I was a child, my Granny often mentioned her, tragic that she's largely forgotten now, but we remember.
WE used to watch this on rainy days when we could not have recess outside. It was one of about 3 movies St Pius X in Fairfield Ct had in it's library, the other was the animated version of The Selfish Giant, and I forget the 3rd...anyway, we never got tired of this, it never stopped being fun and cool.... and decades later I still ponder about inventing pancakes that make people happy...well without violating any current drug laws
I too remember this from 70's elementary school. We also watched Electric Company starring Letterman cartoons, Spiderman, and a young Morgan Freeman.
BTW - did anyone else watch a movie in class with an old Santa Claus looking guy, who made poor choices; one was bathing in a creek with bar soap? No, it wasn't Grizzly Adams. It was film on a reel made for schools.
I have been looking for this and talking about trying to find this movie for forty years. Thank you for sharing and posting. What a treasure. Simple kindness like this is what our world should be. Be well and thank you again!
welcome! Glad you like it
80s kid here missing the magic of childhood. My heart needed this today. Thank you.
Every year in October we saw this all trough elementary school on the East Coast! Good times!
The last time i watched this was in grade school on reel to reel! I never thought i'd ever find this. It took a long time for me to even remember enough of the movie to figure out what to search Google for. Thanks so much for this!
Welcome
I almost forgot about this! I remember watching this when I was a kid. That must have been 40+ years ago.
I’ve looked for this film my whole life, ever since I watched it with my mum way back and around ‘83! Thank you so much for uploading it here! ❤️
I saw it in 81! 😂
I loved when they showed us this movie in elementary school - such good memories.
Haven't seen this since I was a child (kindergarten circa, 1970) and what a delight to revisit this short film and all of the memories that it brought back!
I was laughing and smiling to myself,as I watched and thinking it's a good thing that an old comedian that smokes cigars and wears brightly colored sweaters didn't live in their attic. 😁 Lol
It is a delightful little treasure of a movie and does make me so HAPPY to see it and smile, again. 😁 Can't wait to sit and watch it with my granddaughter. Thank you!
I was 10 years old 🗝️ and in fourth grade when I was watching this little movie 🍿🎥 in school 🏫🎒! 6/23/24! 5:45pm!❤😂🎉😅😊! 20:32
I occasionally thought about this short film over the decades and thought about it a few minutes ago and decided to Google it and found it! I haven't seen this in almost 50 years. Thanks for posting it.
welcome
It took a couple of years but i found a 16mm film copy of this short on ebay. Bought it along with a Bell & Howell series 500 projector.
We saw this in elementary school around '89. I distinctly remember the boy taking a bite and some weird music/colours flashing. I just found it. Thank you!
A "clean" transfer with no film breaks. Bless your heart.
I'm sure this came from a legit VHS release the company made in the 80's, probably one of those pricey "educational" editions only schools paid for.
@@ChristopherSobieniak This is a clean copy from LCA vhs
@@pressmin Figures! I often saw LCA tapes at my library like the one for Nelvana's "Cosmic Christmas". By the 80's it started to be a thing for film companies to provide video copies of their films for places that may not have to buy a film print instead.
Yeah, I noticed that this one was smoother than the others on CZcams.
Wow, looks like a lot of us watched this in elementary school and couldn't remember it and have been looking for years. Crazy.
For decades I thought the mom was played by Marlo Thomas. Keep in mind I haven’t seen this film since I was 6 in 1980 and it’s now 2024.
I remember watching this in elementary school every year , I loved it. I've been looking for this film for years. So glad I found it. It brings back such happy memories.
I remember watching this in Elementary school. Stuck with me all these years, like pancakes 😅
We watch this movie in 1st grade back in 1981.I still think about it over the years but never knew the title of the movie or where to find it until now.
I was talking with my b-in-law about fun things in the 80s. Green machines, banana-bucket bicycles, Rubix cubes ..etc. For some reason, this movie popped into my head. In elementary school, they would play this movie. All I could remember was a witch making these delicious pancakes. Here it is with the power of CZcams. I also remember the graphics after they ate the pancakes.
I wonder if they still play this movie due to certain content being so politicized in schools.
Love this. Saw it in grade school in the 70’s 🧡
Did any of us consider what was ACTUALLY being put in the pancakes back then? Lol! The magical HAPPY pancakes, the world's first edibles!
After watching this again some 40 years later, I want to get into the happiness business too.
Wow. Saw this in class when I was unknown years old, maybe 4,5,6,7 I don’t know. I googled “school film, crazy pancakes and witch” and this came up.
So crazy I have the same memory so many others do too it could not have been the same class. It looks like it was a traditional film to show to kids for Halloween in October for many years across the US.
The name of the actress who plays the witch is Hermione!!!
Now THAT is a very cool factoid!!!!! (And coincidence! I wonder if JK Rowling ever saw this movie?)
Thanks for the memories. I watched this in grade school a long time ago.
welcome
Thank you!
I remember watching this in fourth grade. I remember the complete drug trip anyone would go on immediately when they ate those pancakes.
It was the late 60's during the psychedelic hippy drug era and everyone drove a VW Bug🤪
Love this short film.
Loved it!
No one has mentioned that the actress playing the witch was named Hermonie???!!
ty
I'm 57 help me out people my age. Now before VCRs and DVDs these old film strips were all teachers had to get a break during a rainy recess or time to grade papers. In elementary school I saw this a bunch of times maybe two three times a year. As an adult it cracks me up more now even than it did then. Eat pancakes get psychedelic hallucinations! Also I guess Burgess Meredith needed work after the end of batman? But there were other gems like this too. Paddle I think it was about some kid who made a wooden canoe that he put on the water. A story about an African kid who got a bicycle and didn't take care of it and all the village end up using its parts. A story about a kid who had a catfish and an aquarium and he didn't take care of it and it got distressed or something and called out to him psychically and then he had to race home to save it or some other fish or something. Then there was another one with some scientists and some cartoon animals talking about blood. But back to this old gym. My theory when I was a kid was a part of the which is recipe was Wonder bread! That's why the rainbow dots when you ate it!
saw this movie many times in elementary school.
this was actually released in the late 60s, unsure of the exact year.
If only the witch knew how "full of evil" the world would be today in 2023.
She knew it back then too. Its also known as "Christianity"
I remember watching this when I was about 5, at our school in Baytown, Texas. That was literally 50 years ago!
Can you imagine a school showing this now? Those Moms 4 liberty, minivan Taliban, religious freaks, would lose their minds. LOL!
Who else watched this sitting Indian style (F.O. if you don't like this phrase) as a 3rd grader in their school auditorium?
because suggesting LSD laced food to kids was totally normal. 🤣
why did those two b's eat and leave like that?!
Rifftrax do you not know of this.??
Was there ever any sequel to this?
Yes, the neighbors go into withdrawal jonesing for the pancakes, start stealing from their kids' Christmas funds to buy more pancakes, turn to prostitution and murder. The DEA busts in, take the witch and mother into custody and the kid goes into foster care. Years later you see him in an alley cooking up pancake batter in a spoon. The End.

Yep, this was a classroom favorite for years I've read.

Of course - EVERYBODY was scared that year.
Are they getting high?
Quite simply a true masterpiece.
Technically, this short is from 1969.

Cha'alt!
This was a stupid story.
It does seem somewhat cheesy, but it also brings back some memories, for me. I swear that we used to watch this at one of the schools that I went to. I think this was the movie. What was weird is that they would set this up in the projection room, and make us watch it regularly. Not sure why we kept watching it. I guess they didn't have a huge budget for movies or something.
Speaking as a kid who grew up in the NYC area during the Nixon/Vietnam era, I would say this movie nailed a lot of things perfectly, the overall look and feel of the time along with the prevailing sense of melancholy, and as an adult it feels good to look back and understand what was going on. Short stories are always about characters who experience some sort of release after a transition. Sorry but I can't say it any better than that.
Clearly you desperately need some magic pancakes.
"I guess that's just, like, your opinion man"
it's art
Terrible waste of time.
Uh oh, someone did not have their magi pancakes today, or a nap.
@@somepig2k pancakes, yum yum!!
You must be someone who wasn't shown this film in school in the 80's only to recall it the first time they took LSD in high school. Then be told it didn't exist for 25 years. Then find it on CZcams while tripping on acid. If you were that someone, you would be me and this film explains a lot about who you are.
Your posture of shallow cynicism is appropriate for our time but things were different 50 years ago. One of the ways art functions as "Art" is to give people an insight into the past. If that's lost on you then I'm sorry, for whatever that's worth.
I'm awaiting those happiness inducing pancakes 🥞 ✨🪄 🧹 What an awesome movie. Such nostalgia. I know one thing after watching this I WAS VERY HAPPY 😂 I'd love to have an old Witch like her as my friend.
I remember watching this in elementary school with the old reel to reel projector and wondering what kind of psychedelic drugs she is putting in her pancake mix.
Dude, for real! Just thought about this today so I decided to try to find it. The only thing I could remember were the pancakes that made them see colorful dots. Perhaps this film led to my amazing experiences later in life!
Same memory here. That's very odd. I read other comments here seems like everyone was in the same class watching the same reel projector LOL My memory of this is from about 1987 or 1988. And I was still a child.
