This video saved us a lot of time and additional disassembly. The only thing we did different was to remove the 90 degree air intake assembly from the throttle valve. It involved loosening one hose clamp. By doing this we did not have to move the power steering reservoir and gave us additional space to access the starter.

This is an excellent walkthrough. Thank you so much! I just used this as a guide to replace the starter motor on my 2008 BMW 528i (E60 - N52 engine) and saved around $800 by doing so. A few additional tips based on my experience:
    1. For working on the long top bolt of the starter motor, instead of an 11mm box end wrench, I used a 7/16" box end and it was a much better fit.
    2. Most other video guides on doing this job talk about removing the very delicate plastic PCV hose (the one with 3 ends and the awful circular plastic clamps and runs from under the intake manifold to the top of the valve case) that is prone to breaking and is pricey because it has a heater built in, but I simply left it alone and was able to do the job without disconnecting it.
    3. Check the box containing your new starter motor before starting to work, because I bought mine straight from a BMW dealership and it did not contain the 2 aluminum bolts that are required even though they explicitly told me it did.

Hello, I changed the starter. Car hesitastes for a few seconds and then starts right up. I now have a message on the I drive saying transmission malfunction car may move without depressing brake. I didn't not have this code prior to changing the starter. When I went to test drive my car barely wanted to move. Could this be because the battery was disconnected for 3.5 hours? Also, any idea why I'm getting transmission message?

Do I go through the same procedure of pulling back the intake and try to replace the oil separator? Is there anything I should be aware of? Thanks again.

Great video Thank you! I had to replace my crankshaft position sensor on my 2008 535xi so I removed the starter (I know, I could have done it the hard way from below, but I didn't have a lift, ect so I took the extra steps to get the starter out).
After having done the job, just a couple things I wanted to mention. For me, an amature mechanic, lots of times I struggle to figure out how to disconnect the myriad of plastic connectors and cable holders without breaking them. My eyesight isn't great either making them harder to figure out. That eats up a lot of my time. Maybe there's a guid on them somewhere?
Acnd in your video, you mention that the starter bolts finger spin out once you break them loose. Not on mine. I used a long (12") 10mm (not 11mm as stated in your video) ratcheting box end to get at the back starter bolt. Much easier for me than wedging my hand behind the back intake tube.
Finally, I would suggest taking the intake manifold entirely off instead of strapping it to the hood. Once you get that far, it's just a few more disconnects to get it completely out of the way. It was worth it to me because I hate cramped spaces (like everyone, I suppose). I have been having low boost faults on my turbo intake and that makes me leary about stressing all the valves/hoses by forcing things out of the way. I'm probably over cautious about it...
Thanks again! I'd have been lost without your video!

I hope replacing the hose solves the problem. Car had rough idle. Any thoughts.
