- It’s time to upgrade my old storage cabinet to sleek Euro-style plywood woodshop cabinets. The metal cabinet in my shop was a hand-me-down and had seen better days. Enter these plywood cabinets made from baltic birch and maple plywood. Hanging these cabinets on the wall opened up a lot of floor space in the woodshop. And adding the shelf pins makes it easy to accommodate anything I need to store. This cabinet is a perfect solution for storage in any workshop.

Shelf pins are awesome! I do not plan to move a shelf, yet periodically, I need to adjust and readjust when I get a new item for a shelf...
@@lourias that makes sense.
Good mix of work and humour and editing and pace. Keep up the good work
I should do this in my kitchen instead of storing everything on the floor
Haha! That was actually my first title for the video.
I won’t ask
😀 I hear you ... I hear you ...
+1 to the 'Yes shelf pins' camp. No idea why CZcams recommended this video to me, as my furniture building expertise is limited to Ikea - but I am grateful!
Haha! Well, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I like the simplicity of the cabinets and how you designed them to curve back so as not to interfere with using the jointer. I prefer to use different types of joinery on my shop furniture, so I can practice, and hone my skills. I've been studying and practicing Japanese jointery for almost 2 years now, and I have only touched the tip of the amount of joinery they use in furniture and structure builds. Many of the smaller cabinets and furniture builds done in the traditional style do not use glue , nails, or screws. The joints have very tight tolerances so you don't need them. I just picked up a book on Korean joinery and I look forward to tackling them.
Pocket holes and butt joints are fast and easy, but not a challenge and that is what I love about this craft. After 50 years of woodworking, I'm always learning and never bored with it. Keep doing your thing, it suits you.
Absolutely! Japanese joinery is the pinnacle. For this one I’m more going for convenience since it’s just shop furniture but elevating the joinery for a furniture piece is always a fun challenge.
Yes to the shelf pins. For taller book cases I usually put in a fixed shelf in the middle somewhere too.
Good call! I’m actually working on a pretty long piece right now and I’m going with fixed shelves to add structure and prevent racking. Some times the design forces your hand.
Shelf pin agnostic. Nothing to comment other than I appreciate the realistic views about pocket holes
Thanks for the honest response!
Yes, shelf pins and Yes, cabinet plans, please. 😀
Sweet! I’m on it
Yes shelf pins for shop furniture! This is the first video of yours I've seen, and it was an absolute treat to stumble upon. I found the pacing, camera angles, amount of detail and dad jokes to be spot on. I've watched enough woodworkers on CZcams to know you deserve far more recognition. Excited to follow your journey, keep up the great work :)
Welcome aboard! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for the positive feedback!
Me too! He said it better than I could. Great work. Subscribed
@@davidpetruzzi4173 Thanks! And welcome to the channel!
Yes, shelf pins. They help when initially setting up the storage, even if you never move them afterwards.
💯
Yes shelf pins. Working on a built in bookshelf for my home office that has shelf pins on it. Though yes, once I have the shelves where I want them, I'm probably never going to move them.
It's nice to have the option though.
Yes shelf pins. I really don't spend the time "planning" my cabinets. I like to just build 'em and then I situate the shelves where they will work the best.
Haha this is a really good point!
Yes Shelf Pins! Versatility is key.
Heck yeah!
Yes Shelf Pins, even though I never move them!!!
Haha it only feels right!
Alway appreciate a good ladder joke, they're always up lifting but you take them to another level.
Hahaha! Well played, way to elevate the comments.
Yes! Shelf pins.
I’m with ya!
Yes shelf pins, I have OCD and I constantly rearranging things until I feel like it's effective enough.
I feel ya! I move stuff around pretty regularly
So much cuteness and beauty in these videos :)
Much appreciated! Thank you!
Yes, shelf pins. LR32 set for the 1400. Dashboard has some solutions that can give you table saw repeatability, but you have to plan accordingly to make it efficient. 🎉
I’ve heard good things about the LR32 but I don’t know that I would use it frequently enough to justify the cost today. Maybe if I have a built ins project that would roll into the cost. And good call on the Dashboard stuff.
Yes shelfpins! I like being able to move my shelves. Even after a few years, when my needs change. It really saved me this year when I redid my atelier
It’s good to hear they helped in a recent real world situation.
This cabinet has "Get Hands Dirty" vibes. Very cool looking Shane. I like how you flared the one into the other. Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!
Thanks! Yeah the transition was a nice touch.
Yes shelf pins. Definitely.
Heck yeah!
Definitely yes to shelf pins. I like to keep my storage space adjustable, because I organize, declutter and reorganize things on a regular basis (usually twice per year) and when I move stuff from one shelf to another, I need flexibility in height.
Precisely, I agree!
Yes shelf pins! This cabinet build is so clean and sleek, and has given me much needed inspiration to add storage above my jointer because it is all dead space between the jointer and the mini split. Awesome video!!
Thank you! I’m glad to hear that!
Yes and No shelf pins. What I have found is once I get them where I want them I never move them again. Thing is, for the first few weeks or so I generally play with them based on what I'm actually putting in them vs what I thought I was going to put on the shelfs. This is for shop and indoor cabinets.
That makes sense. I too go back and fourth.
I really like the look of your new cabinets.
Thank you!
Yes shelf pins I think it gives a more ajustment and they look good
No doubt! I love the modularity.
Yes shelf pins. It's just nice to be able to add or remove another shelf as needed. Even if it never is needed
Absolutely!
I like shelf pins in theory but in practice I’ll almost never move them but I like the flexibility of being able to!
I’m with you
Yes shelf pins!
I like it!
Good stuff bro. Pin till day I die, then my kids can use my cabinets too.
Haha there you go!
Yes Shelf pins, but only a few. And Pocket Holes are badass
Haha nice!
Yes shelf-pins.
I also never move them after the shelves are full. However, I find I never plan out everything perfectly and like the initial flexibility. Moreover pins/drilling guides are quick and easy.
Absolutely, it takes all of 15 minutes.
Nice, simple, and crispy!
Just like I like my chicken! Thanks!
Yes shelf pins. It’s better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.
Agreed!
fun build. great details throughout the whole process. Thanks for making this!
My pleasure!
Yes shelf pins.
Although you may never move them. you have no idea what the future is.... Storing tall items, or many smaller shelves becomes real
Truth!
Yes, shelf pins. Great looking cabinets, and so true for the last statement about your shop reflecting the type of work you want to do.
Yes! Thank you!
Yes, shelf pins. Occasionally I go on a complete reorganization spree and what has no doubt been the biggest pain in my rear end is the one bookshelf where a shelf is screwed in, even though it has pinholes.
Oh man, I can see how that would be frustrating. Shelf pins are a must on a bookcase.
They look great!
Thank you!
YES SHELF PINS!!! I've already adjusted shelves in my current garage cabinet as I moved houses and I reorganized the shelves...
I love this garage cabinet build. Inspires me to do some more for my garage!
I love to hear that! Thank you
Yes shelf pins! This is right on time! I was just trying to figure out what to do with my cabinets. The curve is really slick!
Thanks man! I hope this one helps!
Yes, shelf pins for even other furnitures. There are times I do move the shelves to reorganize them.
Good call!
Very cool they turned out great
Thanks!
Nice thumbnail and project, Shane!
Thanks Brad! I appreciate it!
Well done as always Shane
Thank you man, and thanks for joining the live chat tonight!
@@TimberBiscuitWoodworks didn’t want to miss it! Love being part of the community!
No pin shelf. Great job! One like! One follow!
Sweet! Thank you!
Yes shelf pins. If you need them, they're already done. If you don't - they don't get in the way. And for a shop, I'd double up and put everything on wheels that I can - cause what are the chances I laid the shop out correctly for every project? Nil. So, moving things lets the shop adjust to me rather than needing me to adjust to the shop.
Heck ya! I agree with you on all of that.
May be the first video I've seen on this channel and the subtle humor is nicely executed and appreciated. The project is awesome as well!
Thank you very much! Welcome to the channel!
I need cabinets for my shop so this gave me alot of inspiration. Simple but still very nice looking, exactly what I'm looking for 👍
I love hear that! Glad its got the gears turning!
Yes Shelf Pins, even if I never move them I get to set the sizes I need
🙌
Bloody good looking cabinets mate.
As far as workshop cabinets are concerned, you really hit the nail on the head...
Thank you, I think they'll work out great!
Yes, shelf pins
I'm with ya!
Those look very nice.
Thank you!
Yes I like shelf pins on shop furniture so in the future if your tools change you have room to play
Smart man
Yes - Shelf pins. You may not ever change the level of the shelves, but YOU CAN if you need to. If you don't use shelf pins, you CAN'T.
Solid reasoning!
Yes shelf pins for lightweight stuff, for medium weight, use holes that go all the way and bolt the shelves, and for heavier stuff, cut boards the width of the shelf, and the height between each shelf, then screw that to the back. You can add angles to support the front and don the same on the side if it's still too heavy.
Using some laths for less heavy duty shelves works too, and you can always move that by unscrewing them and screwing them at an other height, than add a sticker on the old holes.
Though you can do that with a shelf pin setup or any shelf.
I'll add, use whatever you want for furniture, as long as it looks good enough to you and does its job, it doesn't need to be perfect.
Very true
yes to shelf pins.
I dig it!
Yes shelf pins
I'm with ya!
Yes shelf pins. I rarely move them, but when I do change something around having them is great. And its easy enough to drill them before assembly
For sure!
YES! Shelf pins. Cabs look great. I really like the combo finish; perfect for a shop, not overdone, but still stylish.
Glad you like them! Thanks!
Yes shelf pins because maybe they never get moved, but getting them to the right height in the first place is so much easier with them.
Exactly!
Every time you say final dimension, I keep being reminded of that really bad highlander movie of that name.
Haha, there can be only one
Yes, shelf pins. Because we change where we think where things where going to live to where it actually does once the cabinet is installed.
We're on the same page.
Yes, shelf pins. My shop is constantly evolving to meet my needs. I built three 30x30x15 deep cabinets, and Shaker style doors. But as a bonus, I extended the sides down another foot to have an open cubby for my most frequently used items, such as trim router, sandpaper, cordless drill and driver, and a few battery chargers. Love this! Your video is inspiring me to make more cabinets with your features.
That is awesome! I love to get the gears turning.
Yes shelf pins, absolutely! Today, I had your video in my suggestions and gave it a try, great job on the video and the content. By the way, if you position your pin holes right, you don’t need extra holes for the hinges and the pins work great as a door stop too. Even if you don’t change the shelf’s for years, in the moment you want/ need to, you are going to be happy you made the right choice. Looking forward to see more videos of yours.
Awesome! Thank you!
Really like that curved transition between the two depths.
Thank you, I think it worked out well!
Yes, shelf pins. Better to have the adjustability if the need ever comes up.
Great job with the cabinet design. I know a lot of people shun painting on woodworking projects, but I really like the pop of color it gives to a project.
I’m with ya! And thank you, I think in this instance paint was warranted.
I'm having a ton of shop envy right now.
Mine is an 8x12 shed.
The trick is to slowly move all the non woodworking stuff out of the garage haha
@@TimberBiscuitWoodworks I do. I built carts for my jointer, planer, band saw and table saw. I roll them outside so I have room inside. I have a 12 ft bench on one side and a miter saw station on the other side.
@@cabman86 nice man!
Yes shelf pins! Having flexibility and not needing to use it is always preferable to not having them and finding you suddenly need to store something that won't fit and you have to disassemble your cabinet just to have somewhere to put it. I'd always rather overbuild than underbuild a solution.
That's an excellent way to look at it!
Yes Shelf Pins. It gives you the flexibility to add an extra one or two shelves, depending on what you are storing. I love to be able to configure them to my personal needs, repeatedly. 🙂
I’m with ya there
good job, dude
Thanks!
Yes shelf pins ate there plans available for this
I’m with ya! Unfortunately there wasn’t enough people looking for plans with this one so I didn’t end up making them.
Yes shelf pins. I do like 5 or 6 in the center of where the shelves go. I dont move them often but every so often you need to.
Good call! That’s my thinking as well
Yes for shelf pins. May have to make adjustments later.
Safety net, right?!
Yes shelf pins. I find I move shelves a lot to begin with when I'm testing layouts, even if I then never move them again
So true
Yes to shelf pin holes -- that's called future proofing. Nice build.
Absolutely! And thanks!
LOL late but Yes to shelf pins
Better than never! And I’m with ya
Shelf pins equals yes. Even though the majority never move the shelf the option to do so is there.
Exactly! Just knowing I have options makes me feel better about it.
Shelf pins, you never know when you might need to addca shelf in the future.
I like your prepared thinking
Yes Shelf Pins for most storage. But then, i like to rearrange things from time to time and its nice to be able to make the storage work for what i need it to at that point. Also, Those are lovely.
So true! And thanks!
This is exactly what i need. Thank you
That’s awesome! Glad you found it helpful!
Oh yeah.... I need some cabinets in my shop.... so I can lock the dang kittens in them while I work. Thanks for the great idea and build !!!
Haha, no problem! Hope it gave you some ideas.
Yes shelf pins! It lets you rearrange things later on. I'm a fan of flush cut down pins for pocket holes that can be glimpsed. . . but no biggie for shop furniture.
Good call!
I'll vote "Yes shelf pins". Doesn't seem like a lot of work, and allows for adjustability down the road when you want to change things up (even if that doesn't always happen). Personally though, I feel like I'm changing up my organizational systems on the regular when I find stuff doesn't work.
I think that is the best argument for shelf pins. Not being locked into one position allows for so much more freedom.
Yes shelf pins. After the video, have you gone back and sanded down, or maybe rounded down with a small router bit, the hole edges used to open the cabinet doors?
Nice! I sanded them before I painted the cabinet doors. Just didn’t film all the sanding.
Even if I'm likely to never move a shelf once it's been installed, I like having the option to do so that shelf pins offer. Obviously, if you attach a shelf permanently, that option goes away.
That isn't to say that permanent shelves don't have their place (fine furniture et al.). But for shop storage (and bookcases), building in flexibility is always a good thing.
That’s my exact feelings on the topic. Well said.
good work. that umbrella joke was so bad it made me laugh lol
Haha nice! Thank you!
Hey man! Great, peaceful content bud. Sub well deserved!
Glad to hear that! Welcome to the channel!

Yup, shelf pins! 😎
Looks great Shane! 👍
Thanks!
Thank you! 😃
That looks amazing. I'm slowly getting my shop organized and you've given me some ideas
Thanks! That what I like to hear, I’m glad it’s got the wheels spinning
@@TimberBiscuitWoodworks Im doing a project with some maple ply right now with some iron on maple edge banding. Having a hell of a time with the plywood wanting to tear out as I trim the edge banding. Wishing I was leaving the edge exposed
Yeah that can be a pain. Have you tried the Little Lipper from FastCap?
Yes shelf pins. Just because I may never change the height but I could if I wanted to.
I like your thinking!
Yes , shelf pin
I dig it
No , you drill them out …
Looking nice! Slick!
Thanks!
I’m partial to shelf standards but I’m old school being 69 yrs old.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?
Great work Shane,

The pocket hole vacuum adapter jig is essential. Makes drilling easier too clearing the chips. You can even get the files on thingiverse to 3d print if you can't find the kreg one
I’ll give it a look, sawdust showers aren’t my favorite thing to do in the shop.
Well done! I'm behind on doing this exact project for my shop. Good quality video, BTW. I love a good shop furniture project!
Thanks! Have fun with your cabinets.
Yes, shelf pins. Personally, I have a small basement shop. So things move and shift as new items are added or removed.
Love that!
