  • In this video, I’ll show you how to build a console table. This versatile table can be used as a sofa table, entry table, hall table, or accent table. I combined walnut hardwood and white oak hardwood for a striking contrast for this one. And I incorporated some fun woodworking techniques like dovetail drawers, inlays, and custom brass pulls. This woodworking project is a great way to stretch some of those lesser-used woodworking skills.

    Gems. And I think only us woodworkers actually notice those things. I show my wife things like grain match and little things I put in my pieces and she points out that someone who buys this will never probably even notice it. lol I think the gems are more for us than the customer. Haha

    Gems. Just ordered a wardrobe that’s all white on the outside so it is as little visible in the white-walled bedroom as possible. But all the edge banding and some of the drawers (the ones I will use as part of my morning routine) will be made from a more pricey material: still tuned down (grey) but with a texture similar to linen that is a nice touch in the literal tactile sense. Only I will ever see/feel it but I deserve it. ;) I hear some Japanese robes were all plain and elegant on the outside with a crazy amount of embroidery on the inside for just a few paira of eyes to behold. ;)

    Just finding your videos and I am impressed. I love you narratives, giving great detailed information, and your very slight, movie references, humor. Your work is exceptional! I am curious, what is the time difference between filming and off camera activities? The amount of time I spend trying to calculate and plan angles has to be like a 10 to 1 ratio. Your work, this video specifically, must have a ton of planning time. Anyway, thank you for sharing your work.

    • @TimberBiscuitWoodworks
      @TimberBiscuitWoodworks  Před měsícem

      Well, first off, welcome to the channel and thank you for your kind words. When it comes to angles and planing I think of those as two separate parts. I spend a lot of time in my shop and I like to take that extra step to showcase whatever activity I'm doing in a way that people might not have seen before. So when it comes to planing shots most of the time I just work with what I have as far as composition. There are some shots I see in films and I a make mental note or written notes and try to replicate those when I can. But there is a ton of planing that goes into actually building the other parts, so I kind of invision what that process will look like and try to plan accordingly. I honestly spend about 60% of the time building and 40% planing at this point.

    Gyms? Jim's? Gems? Whatever it is, I love subtle little details like the triangles you added here. Real neato.

      @@TimberBiscuitWoodworks @TimberBiscuitWoodworks Ah, I see... I must've missed that for some reason. I feel divided between gimmick and/or gem. If a piece is, in it self, sharp and both well designed and made, a hidden gem is what elevates good to realy good. If not, it feels more like an attempt to repair a not-so-good project.
    To me, in this buld the small triangles was a super well thought out little detail that clearly showed a craftsman and designer behind the piece. The triangulat theme together with a airy and light feel makes me think this is your best design so far. Much appreciated that you shared the result and the way you got there. Subscribed!

    Gems, I would like plans but could probably wing it off the detail you've shown in the vid, excellent work yet again. I'm thinking of a version with only one darkwood wood and a brass inlay in the triangle reveal.

    Gems, totally. Not to qualify the answer, but if hidden gems are put in and executed well, it shows the level of detail and skill of the woodworker. This is an impressive project, and that table is awesome. I'm up against the same "time to grow, buddy" wall with the whole clunky design. IMO, the chef's kiss of this table are the thin, tapered legs. It's uncomfortable and therefore tough to force yourself to go with more elegant, thin designs.

      Thank you man! Yeah, it was one of those moments where I had to just trust the materials to do their job and in this case it paid off. I appreciate the support!

    Gems! Those are the things that make a project. Though I do agree that sometimes people go too far with them. Link when people pour river tables and include a full game of spades inside. Like, that isn't going to age well.

    Beautiful piece, great video, and a very nice space to work in. Also, thanks for taking time to demonstrate your processes. You've inspired me to cut some brass on my otherwise woodworking bandsaw. In the video, you mentioned you're using a 6 tpi blade. Did you mean to say 16 tpi?

      @TimberBiscuitWoodworks  Před 2 měsíci

      Thank you! I'm really happy to hear you found some inspiration. For the bandsaw blade, the higher the tooth count the better, but I did just use a 6 tpi blade and it worked great.

    For the brass handles… I just had the idea pop in my head to do them centered on the drawer face, but at an angle that matches your inlay… would have been kinda cool I think.

      Funny enough I played around with that idea for a while too. I just couldn’t get it to not look awkward or like strange robot eyes haha

    28:48 Tests have shown that threaded inserts are less strong than threaded wood. That's down to the coarse TPI used for the outer thread of insert.
    If you're planning on screwing things in and out a lot of times, the insert is a better choice, although the strength on the join is lower.
    If you're going to screw something in and leave there potentially forever, and you don't want the threads to rip out through movement forces, threaded wood is stronger.

    Nice.
    You could call it the Toddler Taker, with those sharp corners. I had some square corners on the stretcher of my dining table and when the third kid was small she was at a stage where her head was in real danger from that structure, so we let her crawl around down there with a 1 lb margarine container on her head for a helmet. Never a yelp. I was not so lucky, as a kid, with a 90 degree corner on a piano... Turns out your don't need any analgesic for stitches in your forehead as a kid of the 60s...
