  • Definitely in a sticky situation right now but the writing so far is really good. I'm Intrigued to see how Gang-tae goes around this situation.

I definitely think this was one of the best depictions of PTSD a show has put together

This show is a constant rollercoaster of emotions, constantly tugging you in all directions. On the one hand, the progress and development that the characters are making are extraordinary, in particular Sang-tae who is the one who is growing, emancipating and maturing more than anyone else; first with the awareness of wanting to be the adult he is, an older brother who can be counted on and then deciding to face his greatest fear, finally showing us what happened to his mother that day... But we are also seeing maturation in Moon-young, more and more open, social and with the sincere desire to bond with Sang-tae, to be altruistic with him, with Kang-tae and in general with others; of course, Moon-young always remains with her caustic character and outbursts of emotion like the funny scenes in the pizzeria first and in the supermarket after her with her whim of wanting to make a baby with Kang-tae. I agree with you, writing about character development is something beautiful and touching. On the other hand, however, you can never enjoy a moment of serenity when you immediately get a kick in the face with new twists that destabilize our characters and in this case Kang-tae receives the hardest blow, because knowing that the woman that he loves is the daughter of the person who killed his mother is not easy to digest and the possibility that he projects, as you said, his negative emotions onto her just because she had the misfortune of being Do Hui-jae's daughter is strong in him. The ending of the episode, however, gives us hope in Kang-tae's maturity to separate the two and love Moon-young for who she is. But now it remains to be seen how she will take Moon-young when she finds out.
Triviality: the fact that head nurse Park Haeng-ja shares the same surname as patient Park Ok-ran is the usual Korean coincidence, given that in Korea almost all Koreans have the surname of Park, Kim or Lee and this for historical reasons various.
You made a fair point about Nurse Oh Cha-yong and her lazy attitude in doing this job... but I won't say anything more about that, because it will be funny later in the show...
Applause for the always effective jealousy tactic, which seems to be working very well on Joo-ri, especially with Seung-jae as her back up.
Scattered notes: to summarize, the patient Kan Pil-wong was one of hundreds of thousands of Koreans sent to participate in the Vietnam War as allies of the United States, between 1964 and 1973, to support South Vietnam against communist attacks. During this period, the Korean army was the protagonist of several atrocities (such as the Binh Tai, Bình An/Tây Vinh, Bình Hòa and Hà My massacres) against the Vietnamese, killing thousands of them, mostly defenseless civilians, often alone as retaliation for attacks received from the enemy army or because they perpetrated what the Japanese army taught them during the occupation of the Korean peninsula between 1910 and 1945, as an effective method to subjugate the local population... This is therefore why the patient Kan Pil-wong is consumed by guilt for what he did in the war and is imprisoned in the past. This, as said, to summarize in a few words at best.
Small personal note on the subject: often, when I find myself reading the comments under the posts that talk about past wars, I often notice that people tend to take clear sides, as if wanting to identify an enemy, forgetting that war is a complex matter and that there are victims and executioners on both sides. I personally, when it comes to these things, have a detached attitude, taking note of the facts without giving them a moral judgement, obviously condemning atrocities as a human being like those mentioned above.
    Thanks for the reaction.

This was definitely an interesting episode, a lot was touched on. In regards to the character Pil-wong it broke my heart because in a general look on war no one ever comes out fully victorious, there are losses for the victims and also the removal of Humanity from the act of war. It's a really touchy subject all in all. This was definitely a tough episode for me.

@@Mimithestan I don't remember if I have already recommended it to you, but if not, I highly recommend Daily Dose of Sunshine which, even more than this show, accurately deals with the issues of mental health and social problems of the country, but also universal ones.
