Blessed to have had Daniel as an influence in my musical journey. In 1978 Daniel engineered the very first studio session I ever worked on. I was 18. Grant Avenue Studio, in Hamilton ontario, was like mecca to me. I remember one evening we stopped by Grant' late at night, Daniel was all by himself. It was like 3 am. He was recording the different sounds a copper fire extinguisher made when it was hit with varying objets. No Lie... He was tapping on a fire extinguisher and recording the sound it made... Daniel was a fantastic musician but he spent a lot of time developing his engineering and production skills. Yes, I'm blessed because, at an early age, I was exposed to his genius. Old school recording techniques coupled with a true love of music and sound reproduction is what make DL the Einstein of modern music!
"You make sounds, and I go looking for them". Pharrell's honesty takes understanding his art a notch higher. The amalgam and synthesis of known or recognized sounds is creativity, even though much has been said against Hip Hop music studio excess.
That was the most educational, uplifting, energising video I've seen this year. I'm a recording artist, and I think the combination of Pharrell's questioning and knowledge of production with Daniel's immeasurable genius (I'd never heard of Daniel before) and knowledge of sound and artistic communication is just magical. How much I would love to have been in that room and talked with them, and played them some music. I want to get rich/famous/acknowledged enough to do that. I really do.
I love this, I could watch over and over. Daniel is a true artist, and it shows within his passion. I hope I can take my music and production work to that level someday.
Heard the mention The Meters, never heard of them, looked them up because they both loved them. Once the song started I was digging it, downloaded it right away before getting 15 seconds into the first track. Fantastic discovery.
+JeiShian Music Find as many and keep. Those of us from the vinyl era went through a dry period looking for Meter's recordings. All of the vinyls were worn out from excessive party playing. True...
Look, listen and learn. One of the most talented artists on the planet - sharing his thoughts. This is what music is all about for me - sharing and respecting the powerfullnes of sound. Thanks to the crew for making this little documentary- great balance in questions and laid back feeling.
Had the privilege of recording an album at Grant Avenue with Danny engineering and Stan Rogers producing. His philosophy and abilities of finding the soul in a particular place, at a particular time with a certain group of people was happening way back then. He was a wizard at finding sounds and cutting windows in 2" tape!
Fantastic interview..I loved that Pharrell was really taking in what Daniel Lanois was saying. Daniel is a truly spectacular, caring artist and I'm so glad the interview extended to 45 minutes...most of which was dialogue from Daniel. On another note, as a female watching this, I was truly stunned by the naked asian server. For an instant I thought...oh, now I'm seeing an example of how this male dominated music industry blatantly alienates, objectiifies and subjugates women. Did the producer actually think that only men would be watching this amazing interview and that this stunt was somehow funny?? A juvenile decision that disjointedly appeared...absolutely not in keeping with the intelligence and inspiration of the discussion.
Yes i'm no prude at all, nudity is wonderful , i'm a male, but time and place... I would never ask a woman to do something like that. Ruined the vibe for me. I realize it was 9 years ago but why ? what's the point? it's degrading. Sad because it was a great interview.
Why would someone thumbs down this video? it's pure knowledge in this video, and the interview speaks about what really matters in a studio.. great producers that learn there craft.. and touch lives..
Pharrell Williams reactions seem at times to come from a stranger to music, at times uninterested, at times umprepared for the interview, at times hinging on hostile and cold to his guest. Notice some clinical wow's here and there, but nearly no follow-up questions to one of the most creative geniouses of the 80's and 90's music. Strangely, Mr. Williams closes his opening presentation not by going into Mr. Lanois's music but by mentiong "his incredible Los Angeles home." For what Mr. Lanois says and the stories he tells, of his how his music is created and his being a prolific producer for so many artists-from Brian Eno to Emmylou Harris via Lesbian bands in Canada-it is worth watching it.
We need more of these episodes. I feel so delinquent not knowing who Danial Lanois is & I feel this will introduce me to more people like this. More episodes please
Pharrell trying to continue his story while the lady was pouring them some new water was so fun to watch hahahah, he's talking about spontaneity and even "let me see that again" hahaha
What a fantastic master class! Daniel has some fascinating insights. And he is so generous about sharing them. That conversation about the sound of rooms... McCartney said he and Lennon would practise their new guitar songs in the bathroom of his Dads house, because they liked the sound it gave . Loved listening to this. An actual conversation where people listen and react to the other person thoughtfully and honestly! An exchange of ideas.A meeting of the minds. Yes!
With Daniel's raindrop pattern on his steel guitar, I visualize a white/cream-ish colored overcast sky in the direction of West. Then at 33:46, I visualize the yellow of the sun--as the sun peers through the clouds after the rain. The direction of 33:46 is South. The time of day is morning--between 8 and 11 am. Btw, I am a synesthete, and that has definitely stimulated my synesthetic thought. Very cool!
What a great interview. I love Pharrell's questions. Didn't love the constant interruptions, but when he asked questions they were really great. How amazing it must feel to be in Daniel Lanois' shoes having made some of the most loved records of all time.
Same opinion, f€%& that Pharrel un classy humor in that naked chick moment. Just total idiotism over there and unpreciation for Mr. Lanois and his precious time to give interview. Should't have happen I say....
What an incredible piece of music at the end of this interview ! Everybody should check out some of Dan's catalogue. Whether it be the his solo album " Here Is What Is ", the Budd/Eno album " The Pearl ", Emmylou's " The Wrecking Ball " or Gabriel's " Birdy " soundtrack.......these guys are the craftsman !
its obvious that the naked women is a symbol for how pharrell and danny were talking about live vs recorded music. and that live hits you differently and sometimes harder than recorded, for it being spontaneous.
What a great interview.... I thought Pharrell Williams asked some great questions, and I really enjoyed the awe and respect that he gave his "elder"! Bravo Pharrell!
I can't stop watching my most favorite human in the world. Daniel is a genius! Gifted, talented and amazing in all aspects of music. I too am a musician and for one moment I would love to sit and speak with him about nerdy music things like we musicians do. :)
Loved this, great history lesson and i'm not a tech head but always wonder where great music comes from, who and what inspires these sounds. Thank you for sharing.
Came across this video about Lanois. He is amazing and i grew up across the river from him. Pharell can not be happy with his interview. He is so uninterested. Anyhow.....Daniel is fantastic and has had such an amazing career and so proud of a great Canadian gentleman.
That lovely creature who walked in is adult actress Layla Rose. Stunning! And I live and grew up in Hamilton where Daniel cut his teeth recoding and went to high school right next to that studio where you see those early pictures of himself and Eno in front on the porch/stoop.. That was Grant Avenue Studio that Daniel and his brother Bob built in that old house. Though he hasn't owned it for over 20 years, it's still an amazing studio, still going strong.
Thanks for posting such a compelling and informative interview. Pharrell shows a good deal of respect and reverence for Daniel's considerable production skills. Truly an inside look at the philosophy and methods of a humble artist. Kudos to the production team as well!
wow. one of the best interviews hands down. I love how you just "threw in" the element of surprise :) absolutely brilliant. really tapped into the real person.
The part where the naked woman came in at 30:00 was hilarious: Pharrell acting cool and not looking, while Daniel was dumbfounded but tried to respect her, Pharrell throwing in lines about "Bottom end! bottom end is important on some level right?" "Things should be rare and spontaneous" "Ooooh what was that? Let me see that again!" Daniel got his jokes and was laughing along hahahaha That comedic moment aside, this was an educational and most of all very inspiring talk. Lots of positive energy and respect for each other, and stimulating questions. That piece at the end was so good it made me want to make some music inspired by it!!! Does anyone know if there's a completed track somewhere? Reminded me of Sigur Ros Thank you very much!
Daniel Lanois is an icon in the world of music engineering and production world! Sadly these icons are fading away leaving nothing but superficial artists that perceive they are skilled, crafted, and knowledgeable as the Daniel Lanois's of music artistry, engineering, and production! Pharrell is also one of the few younger artist's today that if stays the course will become another music icon! Great interview!
They should make something together. Pharrel 'goes looking for sound' and Daniel is an interesting sound generating machine. 1 day in the studio, 1/2 day Pharrel sampling, 1/2 day Lanois producing.
So nice to see mista Pharrell learning a thing or two from this genius and spreading the good word of what music really is. Pharrell is awesome in his own right, but DL is the bomb. This exploration of music is fantastic and I would kill to be sipping whiskey in that room right now!
Pharrell was a little off in his history of U2 and Danny. He got so excited talking about U2 that he didn't catch that the album that was recorded at Slane Castle was The Unforgettable Fire and he started saying that The Joshua Tree was the album recorded there. Danny graciously corrected him without making Pharrell look like an ass!
Though Windhill Lane is not Slane Castle. Its both Ireland. For most americans thats just 'very far away'. I do love to see Lanois grace and modesty. But Pharrel is gracious too as Lanois is gesturing at these 3 vintage channels of heavily stickered La2 en Pultecs, Pharrel is not bursting out laughing.
It's good to see the face of the person behind great music. There is some great info on recording music. I'm designing a home recording studio. Thanks for sharing.
Refreshing, insightful and real in depth look at recording artistry through the great questions by Pharrell, who is no chop liver himself. The eye candy wasn't bad either.
Poor Pharrell, his ego has been taken down a thousand notches. He's realized what a true artist is!! Daniel is the BEST!!!!!!! Glad Pharrell will be inspired from such a wonderful man!!
Daniel is really cool. I met him a few times early in his career and no attitude just a great artist and producer. Good on yea Daniel. Met you at Village Recorder circa 1985 and then again at a beach club and when I worked with Mr. Shep Gordon. I was so happy for this guy when his work took off huge huge producer real deal

I remember the "Raffi" Gold records hanging on the walls of G.A.S.
I come back and watch this at least once every year. 💎
6 years ago this interview changed my life as I was progressing in producing and engineering music to where I am now is humbling
hahaha "you gotta be kidding" .....30:00 minute mark left me in stitches too !
Daniel amazed me. What a humble and talented guy.
"You make sounds, and I go looking for them".
Pharrell's honesty takes understanding his art a notch higher. The amalgam and synthesis of known or recognized sounds is creativity, even though much has been said against Hip Hop music studio excess.
Right on
I love when Lanois talks about the studio instruments with so much love, and respect! Like the upright Steinway.
I really do.
omg i could listen to daniel's pedal steel playing endlessly... :)
Omg this was possibly the best thing I've ever watched on CZcams.
I love this, I could watch over and over. Daniel is a true artist, and it shows within his passion. I hope I can take my music and production work to that level someday.
Heard the mention The Meters, never heard of them, looked them up because they both loved them.

+JeiShian Music Find as many and keep. Those of us from the vinyl era went through a dry period looking for Meter's recordings. All of the vinyls were worn out from excessive party playing. True...
I love Daniel's insight and evident reflection on his own work. He's able to communicate it all quite well.
This is one of the best artist interviews i've seen. Perfect chemistry between Pharrell & Daniel, amazing and so inspiring.
ya, it's the chemistry.....killer.
What a humble, warm and good person Daniel Lanois is....Its just shines out of him.......

Incredible!!! Two geniuses discussing their craft. The refreshment delivery was impressive also.

I think it's because of girl.
"I like horns..." rises eye brows.....I love Daniel Lanios.
Wow, one of the greatest producers alive interviewing another of the greatest producers alive. This is amazing! Sub's, liked, and everything else.
Respect to both Daniel and Pharrell!
This "sit down interview", really moved me in the most intellectual way ever.

Daniel Lanois is jut the greatest. I love when He and Emmylou are together playing or recording..

This was such a treat to see and so enlightening many of the things he reveals/shares, a true peek into the genius that is Daniel Lanois......
Luv - Daniel Lanois - Enjoyed the brain, the emotions, the flow... it's the way it is... BEAUTIFUL human ... working at it tksxx
So clueless as to how I fell into this interview, but as a budding music producer (at the age of 52), I'm so glad I did.
What a great interview. I love Pharrell's questions. Didn't love the constant interruptions, but when he asked questions they were really great. How amazing it must feel to be in Daniel Lanois' shoes having made some of the most loved records of all time.

Pharrell needs to interview every musical artist... He knows and understands the questions and can easily elaborate on the answers..
I found it interesting that when asked what was the one song that defines him DL went right to "One' with U2. Amazing song.
I keep coming back to this interview. Thanks so much for this
Absolutely lovely. THANK YOU so much for such a great piece.
Amazing. DL has had a huge influence on my music. Great to see this.
Don't forget Lanois' solo: Acadie. Every song...total stunner.
its obvious that the naked women is a symbol for how pharrell and danny were talking about live vs recorded music. and that live hits you differently and sometimes harder than recorded, for it being spontaneous.
INCREDIBLE is what came to mind too, but I say who needs a joint with that music, it works on it's own level, takes the mind to amazing place!
Musicians could learn loads from stuff like this, Pharrell is a genius.
How amazed and happy was I to come across this, wow. Two masters.
Wonderful interview. Thank you both for sharing so openly and being so accessible to take in such important information.
Peace
What a great interview.... I thought Pharrell Williams asked some great questions, and I really enjoyed the awe and respect that he gave his "elder"! Bravo Pharrell!
Daniel tes le best !!
What a smart pro conversation. The lap guitar was amazing.
I can't stop watching my most favorite human in the world. Daniel is a genius! Gifted, talented and amazing in all aspects of music. I too am a musician and for one moment I would love to sit and speak with him about nerdy music things like we musicians do. :)
Danny and Pharrell - two of my favourite artists from very different musical angles
I loved seeing Pharrell blown away by Daniel's references to recording elements. You can not fake reverence.
It used to be that live music was the bait to buy the record, now it's the opposite which is why nobody retires anymore. Good engineer and musician.
That lovely creature who walked in is adult actress Layla Rose. Stunning!
And I live and grew up in Hamilton where Daniel cut his teeth recoding and went to high school right next to that studio where you see those early pictures of himself and Eno in front on the porch/stoop.. Incredible interview ! So cool... And the water girl... Grrrrrrr...
Thanks for posting such a compelling and informative interview. Pharrell shows a good deal of respect and reverence for Daniel's considerable production skills. Truly an inside look at the philosophy and methods of a humble artist.
Kudos to the production team as well!
do good work "touch a lot of hearts." that's a mantra right there. Beautiful Daniel and Pharrell knows the truth. Right On!
wow. one of the best interviews hands down. I love how you just "threw in" the element of surprise :) absolutely brilliant. really tapped into the real person.

Blows me away that Pharrell is 41 years old.... The dude looks really young to me....
Daniel Lanois is an icon in the world of music engineering and production world! He'd want to get a live performance down with him singing and some touaregs
Lanois, Pharrell, Whiskey girl, Live mix.. unexpected and awesome watch, thank you!
Amazing. That was the best interview ever !!!
Lanois pauses in his remix and pulls Williams closer to the console. That says so much.
😂😂😂 it was so funny to see his reaction to the girl. ..
I wish I could have been in that lab to hear those Angels and that 808 head on! That would have been epic to hear in live stereo!!
This interview was deep. Watched it twice. Thank you Pharrell and Daniel. Respect!
Wow. It's nice to see a new interview. You're just not going to just get this anywhere else.
So nice to see mista Pharrell learning a thing or two from this genius and spreading the good word of what music really is. Pharrell is awesome in his own right, but DL is the bomb. This exploration of music is fantastic and I would kill to be sipping whiskey in that room right now!
This interview has touch me in so many ways. It has inspired me with a freedom of creation in the way I will create from now on. Thank you.
So much information here, fascinating .
goose bumps when he played

both geniuses, so inspiring. thank you reserve
That music at the end slaps so hard I'm still trying to lift my jaw.
Such a a great chemistry between those guys.
Such a great interview. The topless woman was the icing on the cake. It was hilarious.
great interview. Daniel has a true gift. alot of talent.
I adore all things Daniel Lanois....as a producer AND as a musician in his own right. Id love to see more vids of him at work making albums
Perhaps this talk has inspired Pharrell as much as it has me...his basslines are awesome now!
Refreshing, insightful and real in depth look at recording artistry through the great questions by Pharrell, who is no chop liver himself. The eye candy wasn't bad either.
the best gatherings, always have ladies in birthday suites...
helps you go wit da flow... thanks for this, a thing of beauty!
Great interview Pharrell! Lanois is amazing!
so cool to see pharrell so humbled
Who's the interviewer? He sucks.
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF ACTING?
actually yeah he sucks at acting humble, hes too humble
Yes. He's an absolute Gentleman (In real life).
Un grand québécois, gatinois!
I'm absolutely stunned!
Poor Pharrell, his ego has been taken down a thousand notches. He's realized what a true artist is!! Daniel is the BEST!!!!!!! Glad Pharrell will be inspired from such a wonderful man!!
I can't believe I'm just seeing this! So many amazing moments.
Thank you for this. Seriously. Some things you just need to hear...
Magically Delicious, I watched the whole damn thing. Keepem coming.
wow really inspiring and fun interview.
One of the most educational youtube videos I've ever seen
Thanks !
Two Producer musicians I really admire? Yes please
About time...I've been waiting for this interview to be uploaded
Daniel is really cool. I met him a few times early in his career and no attitude just a great artist and producer. Good on yea Daniel. Met you at Village Recorder circa 1985 and then again at a beach club and when I worked with Mr. Shep Gordon. I was so happy for this guy when his work took off huge huge producer real deal
Absolutely love this!
This is such a good interview, it is really inspiring.. Man, humans are sometimes freakin' amazing... :)
he does it for all of the artist talk
