Hi! I read the first hunger games book before I was 11. I enjoyed it so much. It's about a dystopian society where they have a competition where 24 teens must kill one another until only one survives. The overview of the books sounds violent, cruel, and disgusting, so many parents and teachers avoid giving this book out. But, I think that this book is about so much more than that. It's about love of family and loyalty to friends. How compassion, humanity, bravery, and strength are characteristics that can get people through the worst. This book also shows the media at its manipulative worst, using contestants as pawns to both shock and entertain, and I think that is one of the most important messages for young teenagers in todays society. I would 100% recommend this book to any kid over the age of 10 that has the reading capabilities to understand it. Mild kissing and romance are also shown in this book, just be aware.
