  • Quick presentation of how to self launch a kite.
    Steps:
    1. Preflight checks of the lines.
    2. Keep slight tension in the lines as you walk upwind.
    3. Bar sheet out.
    4.Pull the back line which is connected to the further wing tip of the kit.
    5. Allow the kite to open up by balancing the tension of the line you are pulling.
    6. Kite in ‘C’ position ready to launch.
    7. Grab the bar an steer the kite up in the air.
    8. Avoid creating to much tension to prevent backstalling.

    Works up to 30kts no problem at all. Me and my friends have moved to self launching in this way in almost all conditions.

    No need to be hooked and hold the bar while walking. It's the best way to get into an accident if the kite starts drifting or goes into deathloop because of a tangled line. Better to stay unhooked until the canopy is tight and just keep one hand holding on the security in case of wrong surprise so you just have to drop the bar or release your safety if anything bad happens.
    Safety first

      @lasomathletics  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Good point but both option (hooked and un-hooked) are considered safe and sound. When hooked one hand goes on the chicken loop quick release, so if anything goes wrong (e.g. the drifting kite as you mentioned) you activate your safety system. Done and dusted👍 thanks for the comment.

      Hi mate, good to hear you are alive👍
      Now watch this: czcams.com/video/1pLBPDaeDNQ/video.htmlsi=rtw49-Aq6QxSlHQG
      it will help you to understand a bit better the whole process.
      YES, IN STRONG WIND YOU HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL AND ALREADY HAVE SOME EXPERIENCE AROUND YOUR BELT IN LOW WIND. ALSO, pay attention to the title of the video you have just watched: SELF LAUNCH IN LOW WIND.
      Good luck with your progression.
      BTW Your safety is your own responsibility, all videos are for entertainment purposes, you try at your own pace and risk.

    How do you land the kite on your own?
    I’ve only ever used a ground anchor and to be fair only self launched with an anchor

    • @lasomathletics
      @lasomathletics  Před 9 měsíci +3

      To self land you can use 2 techniques:
      1. THE SAFEST ONE is to come out of the water and IF you have enough space around you (keep in mind the range of your drop and safety zone) let go of the bar and trigger your chicken loop quick release (2nd safety system). Let the kite settle and start making your way towards the kite BUT do not pull the kite to you INSTEAD walk your way up the safety line (as if your are climbing up the line towards the kite). ALSO avoid wrapping the line around your hands, fingers etc. Go all the way pass your bar (do not touch it), follow the safety line (most likely it’s the RED line but could be different colour) until you can teach the leading edge of the kite. Keep your leash connected at all times till you meet with the kite.
      If at any point something goes wrong (e.g. kite goes up in the air) let go of the line (let go of ‘everything’), assess the situation, let the kite re-settle and repeat the ‘climbing’ up the safety line procedure.
      2. THIS TECHNIQUE is quite tricky in stronger winds (in certain situations it does NOT work and by attempting it you are risking one of the lines getting caught on one of the sides of the bar which in worse case scenario can end up in ‘death loop’ if the kite goes back up in the air, hence if you want to try it make sure that the wind is LOW.
      Also this technique works with 4line bar set up and low ‘V’ (low vertex) front lines set up.
      Here is what you have to do: start lowering your kite to one of the sides of the wind window, look at your front lines (the once in the middle) and determine which line out of the two is on top (higher than the other or in different terms which one is closer to the sky), once you know which one is the top one (btw it is always the one opposite to the direction that your kite is flying during landing ONLY IF your center lines (front lines) are NOT TWISTED (what I mean is that you have to clearly see the ‘V’), next let go of the bar and as the kite f is free falling towards the edge of the wind window your objective is to keep pulling and gathering the top front line so the kite turns with the leading edge from ‘C’ position to ‘PARK’ position. If everything goes well as the kite hits the ground it should be nicely pressed by the wind to the ground giving you enough time to run/walk to it and manually reposition it if needed.
      ATTEMPT WITH CAUTION.
      Additional technique (safer than the 2nd one) is to use an anchor point which you already mentioned in your comment.
      I am going to make some video content showing the above techniques, until then keep riding and progressing.
      Thanks for your comment👍

      @@lasomathleticsreally appreciate the detailed reply. I look forward to more of your videos; I struggle with other videos as theres too much going on but your above launching video is just straight to the point no confusion, really appreciate it!
      When I had my lessons they wouldn’t go into self launch/landing just say to avoid it but unfortunately it’s unavoidable.

    I'm having difficulty after getting the kite to sit on its wing tip ready to launch, to actually launch without it aggressively taking off downwind even tho i have very little bar pressure. I allow it to gently climb but it back backstalls into near power zone. I have checked my front lines, trim strap depowered. Any help would be appreciated. Klair

    • @lasomathletics
      @lasomathletics  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Sometimes if your position is not enough upwind before the take off the kite is going to shoot downwind even with minimum bar pressure (because we are not exactly at the edge of the wind window. During self launch sometimes we have to go more upwind = kite deeper in the wind window while on the tip in the ‘C’ position which then = a little yank from the kite. We can consider this as disadvantage of self launching but after some experience we can predict what the kite may do so we are prepared for it and respond accordingly and safely).
      The start, we need too also remember that the whole ‘self launching’ technique is a bit more difficult and challenging than launching with an assistant, especially in stronger winds, it is harder for us to get in the perfect sweet spot at the edge of the wind window, hence sometimes we experience a yank from the kite as it climbs up, so give yourself a good tap on the back for trying to master this move.
      Also, maybe try to gently pull on one of the lines (try first in low wind) near the floater (leader line area) while your bar if fully sheet out.
      Thanks for your comment👍

      @lasomstudios thanks! I will try again. I also have been using an anchor to launch so my kite is already sitting nicely on its wing tip assumingly in the right position as its stable until I jog back to my bar but maybe I'm incorrect? I am thinking that maybe I am pulling on the leading edge line for too long when it becomes airborne? Will try again and thank you for your input. There's no one around to help so I intend to keep at it 💯

      @@klairlee1316the trick is to keep your center of gravity as low as possible, i.e. sit on your bum one leg crossed underneath the other and lean back. If your kite takes off aggressively you will still be able to control it.
