    This week I go through what features have me interested and why I am still hesitant to pre-order the camera compared to the GH5s.

      I sure hope we start seeing some sample footage from videographers soon! If not, and I end up pre-ordering it, I will for sure do a short film with it in various lighting situations to see what kind of results we can expect! Thanks for checking out the video!

      TLDR Filmmaker I made up my mind. The bmpcc has all the features missing that most noobs want like no ibis, no fully articulating screen, huge file sizes, no autofocus, and 8mp pictures. When compared to the GH5s it's a no brainer.

      Hey Duke!
      Even though those are from their older cameras, I have no doubt that the image that eventually comes from the BMPCC 4k will be even better. I just hope they don't have weird bugs and features that are missing at launch. I remember the oddness of the original BMPCC where you couldnt delete takes or reformat your card in the camera for...I think a year?

      Hey hey again Michaelsvlog!
      Thank you so much for checking out another video!
      I totally agree, Black Magic has the ability to really capture a sizable market with their full integration. I'm not sure how large their R&D division is in terms of cameras, but I sincerely hope that this new BMPCC 4k is the start of something for them and that we can see some very welcome updates and upgrades to their URSA line.
      Really they just need to find people that are not only good with design, but also filmmakers themselves. Panasonic is winning in that area in terms of full cohesion between the two mindsets. Once Black Magic figures this out, it could really shake the market!

      No problem glad to watch your videos keep up the hardwork. I think the BMPCC 4k is the most innovative camera I have seen this year. Internal Prores in a tiny package even the expensive Sony A7iii and Nikon Z7 doesn't have Prores. I think Black Magic needs to release an aps-c camera with the features of the pocket cinema 4k but add ibis and I will buy one especially at $2k.

    One Major advantage for me is the ability to shoot pro res in camera. You can get a USB c hardrive and it will solve your recording time needs and be able to edit straight away! No need to transcode to pro res... loads of time saved there! If you never edited pro res you will love it

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety

      Hey Popo!
      I definitely agree, editing pro-res is amazing! When I edit films I assemble the first cut in its h.264 form in FCPX. After the rough cut is nearly locked I'll go into my file browser and filter down to the clips I've used and transcode only those clips to Pro-res for colors grades and other manipulations. This is the best way i've come up with to save me some time and also save me space on my HDD. For these youtube videos, I of course do not need to transcode.

    Being a compulsive sort I did, in fact, pre-order the camera from B&H and immediately had buyer's remorse, so I cancelled the order. The good thing is once I "had" the camera I realized I didn't really need it and I would definitely have missed a lot of things I like about the GH5, plus I didn't relish having to buy more memory cards, and monitors and batteries.

  • @EdStarkey

    I do feel like Panasonic rushed the GH5S out the door with all of the firmware bugs I'm finding. I think they got wind of the BMPCC4K and moved up the release about a quarter.

      Thank you so much for checking out the video! What kind of bugs are you running into on the GH5s? Oddly enough I really haven't checked out too many more videos of people and their GH5s's since they first showed up. What you're saying definitely sounds valid about GH5s being rushed, because I don't any of use really saw it coming.

    • @EdStarkey
      @EdStarkey Před 6 lety

      There is a major bug with VFR over 60fps. It's especially bad in V-Log-L! Set up a 120fps VFR shot with focus peaking while in V-Log-L @ ISO-1600, making sure LUT preview is off. Now, look through at the Viewfinder/LCD before recording and all will look fine, then press record and the peaking makes it look like it's snowing there is so much noise! You also get some horrible horizontal banding while doing this. If you use the same settings and switch to Cine-D, the majority of the noise disappears, but it is still 3x more noisy than it should be! Just to let you know how bad it is, I use my GH4 for VFR V-Log-L work over my GH5S!

    Yo TLDR, i bought the GH5S. WHY? It checks of 5xs as many boxes. Waveform, some (not much) autofocus, vectors, focus transitions, weathersealing, low light, ergonomics, battery life, excellent image quality, the GH5S just dropped to $2000.00. I had to spring. The BMPCC4K/BMPCC6K are IMAGE BEAST... ready for cinema screens. The GH5S and GH5 are ready to make money right now!!!!

      Totally agree, right now it's been really hard not to jump on the S1 + Vlog, I think right now the S1 is $2100 with a free V-log upgrade. Ugh... I really want to, but there is no real reason for me to spend that money right now as I don't jobs lined up for that specific camera to make the return on my investment right away :(

      @@TLDR_filmmaker call me an idiot... But if have a gh4/5 already... Then the S1 with vlog is a bad buy. You know why? LENSES! All your gonna be looking at is that behemoth F4 lens. You may even be forced to buy a stronger gimbal. Overall... The GH5S slid right into my workflow so easily and fast man! No new lenses, no new cages, no new gimbal, no new cards... Just pop... Right into my workflow! Now I have TREMENDOUS low light capability. Going from ISO 1600 max to 10,000 max is liberating bro.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 5 lety +1

      Nah you're not a idiot lol. I am the one GH user that when into the GH4 and refused to buy any of the native lenses lol (Although I finally bought one, its coming today and I can't wait to finally have one good native lens! Video coming of course). So in my particular case, jumping systems won't be as big of a deal.
      I totally get the weight factor between the lenses. I remember feeling like the GH5 was huge compared to the GH4, but I do like having a bit more weight when it comes to filming action scenes. The GH system is always going to be in my kit because of gimbals. If I ever do move over to S1 or S1H as my principles, my GH5 or future GH cameras will be dedicated onto gimbals and other rig setups. The reason for this is also because of the new lens I have coming, I have a feeling, for me, it's the perfect gimbal lens.
      Dude... I can't tell you how many times Id love to have that liberating feel of jumping past 1600 ISO without flinching, doesn't happen often as I try to stay at 400 ISO, but when it does... man that would be great haha!
      No push back from me! Get out there and let the creative juices flow!

    Something to know is Blackmagic cameras are actually very low-tech when compared to other camera brands. If you look at the inside of a Blackmagic camera it's actually fairly roomy and their cameras could definitely be made slightly smaller, but I feel like they take the easy and safe route. Every feature in their camera was a slight iteration of something they've learned from their previous models, and that's how they're able to offer so many features at such a low price while not having the sales volume of Sony, Panasonic, Canon, etc. They do however sell relatively well for cinema cameras.
    Color Science is the area Blackmagic excels compared to lower-cost cameras. Their older cams (bmcc, bmpcc, bmpc, ursa mini 4k, etc.) are not nearly as sophisticated as the Ursa mini 4.6k and Pro in terms of color, and if this "gen 4" color science is not just marketing hype then the camera will be a huge step over the Panasonic cameras. Prores is very light in terms of CPU usage so it's quite easy to edit. Prores files are fairly large so storage is the only real issue. You can buy a 1TB samsung T5 SSD and record and edit off the same drive which is probably the cheapest solution.

      Greetings Mo!
      Awesome informative comment!
      I had thought about the idea of editing right off of SSD's and I guess where I become stuck is its dependent on what type of project I'm doing. I think in the end, for me, I may not be at the level where recording to a high quality codec matters.
      If the day ever comes where a streaming platform asks my team to film their next show, but I need to use specific cameras...then I will have to make the switch.
      Until then, I will continue to use the tools I can afford in the big picture of things, while still be able to produce an overall narrative experience for the audience.

    • @overnightclassic2
      @overnightclassic2 Před 6 lety +1

      Yes you're correct in your choices. Dynamic range might be *slightly* more too because of cooling makes a difference in noise. But we will have to wait and see. Overall it is a much better camera, but once you factor in media and extra batteries, it's not much cheaper than the GH5s, but I feel that difference is enough to get a few more accessories, such as an ND filter and a lens.

      You are correct, I have never shot video RAW, theres definitely a ton of benefits that it offers, but at the expense of more storage media to hold it all. With the size of projects I do, investing that much into storage isn't in my budget just yet, but I hope it will soon!
      I'm really hoping that BMD will make a deal with apple to add ProresRAW, from what's been revealed I like that the files sizes are smaller if all the exposure is set close to where you need it to be for the sensor!

    Their cameras are by far the most complained selling items on B&H website. Every third camera has broken down and had to be returned. If you want to have some fun reading people's angry comments go on B&H website and look for customer reviews from Ursa Mini in the beginning before some strange and generic good comments started to pop up strangely. Not to mention that if every third camera broke down they had to repair them and resell them as new so you have at least 50 50 chance to get either a camera that will break down or a camera that was flawed and then reopened and repaired. You might have a friend who bought Blackmagic camera and it works perfectly and another friend who bought a Canon or a Sony that broke down but in general Blackmagic cameras breakdown and cameras like Sony or Canon are very well built and almost never break down. If you want to buy this camera my sincere recommendation is to go on B&H website and see early customer reviews for Ursa Mini 4,6k. Grab a bag of popcorn while you're at it

      While I don't have much personal experience with the BMD cameras except for when we've used them from rental houses, a lot of the DP's that have brought theirs in for the projects love them. That being said, they could have been the lucky ones.
      I do truly think that BMD in this 3rd generation of cameras and tech that they've fixed a couple of their development and production problems that they had in the past. I do give them some credit for how far they've come in a short amount of time and I have a feeling that they will be taking over a decent chunk of the filmmakers market in the next 5 years with their Software and Hardware synchronization.
      Until then, I'm excited to see when more filmmakers get this BMPCC 4k in their hands and truly put it through its paces in various environments.

      My video last week dived into lenses that I think may help you: czcams.com/video/XzHW45n_XqI/video.html
      As for which camera to go with, the public still needs to wait and see what kind of work the BMPCC can do. As I talked about in the video, you may end up have to really accessorize the BMPCC 4k while also buying a lot more storage to handle the file sizes of the uncompressed formats. In the end it could all end up costing the same.
      What do you shoot with now? Or is this your first investment into filmmaking?

    General WARNING about preordering:
    Like with every camera in general but especially with Blackmagic - Never preorder. Most manufacturers need time to "iron out" production flaws (even if there are just minor / small ones). Had already two times MAJOR flaws with brand new camera models. Just for reference (to give you the background information): Panasonic G7 - Ordered it as soon as it was available. Badly this model had an extremely squeaky handgrip (and it wasnt the only one as I found out at some local stores). A few months later - In the newer batches - The problem was gone (they made the grip stronger I guess) and I changed the G7 to another model. 2nd example: Panasonic GH5. Ordered it as it was kind of brand new on the market (just a tad later than I did with the G7). Problem was: The sensor sealing was flawed (and therefor I got dust directly onto the sensor after just a few shots - And the dust particles were BEHIND the UV/IR cut glass). Sure - Maybe a monday model. But after waiting about 3 months til they were able to change the whole sensor array, I was quite annoyed that I bought maybe too early again. Same with the Blackmagic cameras - They also needed time to fix the white orb and black spot issues for example (according the original "old school" pocket cinema camera). The fixes didn´t take THAT long to arrive - And they exchanged the hardware faulty cameras quite fast. But still - If you want something to shoot and work with - WAIT at least three to six months til you order / buy one (and order from big dealers with alot of throughput - That way you always get the newest production batches ^^). LG

      As we all continue waiting to see what the camera can really do along with all the external accessories that will no doubt come to the market to solve certain "out in the field" problems. The very existence of this camera should push Panasonic and Sony to continue their R&D to give us another alternative to the BMPCC 4k. I'm not sure what they would do to compete, but I have to say...I'm not even sure if theres something Panasonic could do to make me want to get a future GH6! im stuck, i currently own the panasonic g85/g80 i primarily use it to shoot music videos and it has been wonderful along side the sigma18-35 and the 25mm 1.7, i wanted to upgrade now to the GH5 but ever since seeing the Black Magic announcement i think if i should just wait and get that, having no IBIS is probably the only set back for me but i guess for music videos ill always be using it on a shoulder rig or a gimbal so it wouldnt be too much of a big deal, only other thing aswel which i find annoying is no flip out screen, using it to get low shots means i would have to somehow adapt a monitor which adds more carrying and weight, but with the gh5 this wouldnt be a problem. What do you think? kinda stuck right now man. Good video by the way bro!

      Hey BM Official!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!
      To answer your questions, the concerns I have is that the BMPCC 4k has a very odd size that may not actually work for single handheld gimbals (Might be too wide). The other concern is how much more storage would you require before editing and also recording from the camera. (Do you do a couple takes, or many takes?)
      Lastly I would ask myself these questions, if I'm already happy with my setup and can get the results I want, is it really worth it to put down $1500-$2000 to switch out to a new higher codec camera and get all the extra HDD and new Storage Media? Or could I use that $2000 and buy more unique lights to light up that scene I wish I had back then, or a different telephoto lens that would have been perfect for that shot for the other music video, or perhaps I want to begin introducing aerial shots into my music videos, maybe I should invest in a drone kit?
      As I continue to evolve from project to project, I begin to realize that my camera's sensor technology is already damn good and its not going to give me results from those scenarios I listed above. Its not going to give me an additional flagged shadow so that my character can appear from the darkness, its not going to give me that background compression when the character stands on a mountains edge with the city skyline behind them, its not going to give me a flyby shot when they are being chased down by 3 squad cars. Its only job is to catch what I craft in front of it.
      Sorry for this longer post, but I hope this helps! Thanks again for all the kind words! Check back every Wednesday for something new!

    I don't get something: Why preorder? Every product in almost every domain nowadays has a few weeks/months for settling in, fixing bugs, firmware updates etc. Especially companies like blackmagic. Maybe even worse, the product has a major flaw (like the loose hdmi on the first bmpcc) and you decide it's not worth it. My thought is: wait for the product to come out, wait for it to be tested/bugfixed/reviewed and also in the meantime the price drops. Am i missing something?

      Hey Jayro!
      No you're not missing anything, people all have different buying habits and some people will always want to be the first to get it for their own reasons e.g. iPhone launches. That being said, I have a slight hunch that BMD by now have figured out how to launch a product without as many issues and we may be surprised this time around...but time will tell!

      Greetings Maku!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and asking a question!
      Definitely a loaded question that I think a lot of us are wondering, even myself. I believe the biggest questions to ask first is...
      "Does having this new BMPCC 4k change the way you currently film, and if it does, what do you need to further invest in to ensure you can continue filming the way you do"
      "Were you able to get more shots and unique shots because you had IBIS?"
      "How fast do you have to move on production, is it run and gun with not a lot of time to switch lenses etc?"
      There is no mistake that this camera is going to make a huge splash in the market for filmmakers that have been wanting RAW and Prores at a camera price they can accept. And now that Blackmagic has announced their own RAW as well as Prores RAW, the big question now is if they will implement this into the Pocket 4k?
      In the end I feel this camera comes down to a careful balance, how deployable is this camera for your needs? Is the added image quality for your delivered medium noticeable to your audience or only to you?
      Even though the price and image quality is great, but you're spending more money and time on production that you may or may not have, your "Return on Investment" goes into the negative and you end up letting the camera work you instead of you working the camera (if that makes sense)
      I know this may not be the most popular opinion, but I do believe that everyone has an appropriate time where upgrading beyond a prosumer camera makes complete sense. For me, at this time, it's hard for me to justify because of my budget and how fast my team has to move. However...if Blackmagic RAW or Prores RAW is confirmed to come to this camera, my opinion quickly changes because of what these new codecs are able to do.
      Sorry for this extremely long reply, I hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by in the comments section! Check back every Wednesday for something new!

      Hello Unal!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!
      Since making this video I have moved away from thinking about a BMPCC 4k, the current productions I work on won't require this type of workflow for the next couple of years. However if someone like Netflix comes to me about a project and needs theses types of high quality codec, I'm glad to know there is a cheaper alternative than to buy an Ursa.
      I am quite excited to see what Panasonic will do for their next generation of GH cameras in the next two years. There are lots of interesting developments in cameras this generation and I think the next GH camera will give us some amazing improvements. But until then, I can see myself continually using the GH5 for awhile, it gives me everything I need for narrative work!
      Thank again for stopping by! What kind of videos do you enjoy filming?

      Hello TLDR Filmmaker,
      Even if we don't buy BMPCC 4K, it's aggressive price will let us buy upcoming models such as GH6, A6700 with competitive prices in the last quarter of the year.
      So thanks Blackmagic :) anyway!
      What made me stay away from BMPCC 4K is the "Windowed HD" at 120fps. So I tend to Sony but haven't decided yet which to choose, a6500 or a7iii. I think I will wait for a6700. I am a stock photographer and planning to shoot stock footage as well soon. Do you think a7iii is too much for stock footage? Is a6500 is good enough in terms of video quality, especially at 120fps?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety +1

      I haven't really utilized the high frame rate features for my work so I can't really give a definitive answer. However, I will say it depends on how well you film your stock footage and if people are looking for it. From my experience when I was editing my first feature, I was frustrated that I could not find decent stock footage because 95% of them made no sense, from a narrative stand point, and were shot very lazily on a tripod with no camera movement or composition.
      The ones I ended up purchasing were actually shot on, by current standards, much worse quality cameras, but in the end no one knew the difference because the stock footage fit the story and had movement qualities that matched the way my movie was shot.
      So I guess the lesson of the story is, don't worry about the feature sets of your camera too much, instead develop your creative eye to shoot stock footage for different filmmakers: Narrative or Documentary. Both require different needs when looking for stock footage. Study the movies you love and see where you can spot a stock footage idea that you can get where you live. I feel if you work at it from this angle you'll have more success than if you just took a very nice camera, that happens to shoot video, and point it at something with no vision of how it could be used for another filmmaker.
      Hope this helps!

    I dont mind moving into a higher quality world and if i have to upgrade then so be it however can i ask with the battery life is there a way to have more than one battery connected i.e. a battery frip of some sorts? or if i were to be shooting my whole short film am i to make sure my angles of shot are near a plug socket? Plus are there any issue's that you may have heard with the sensor on this over heating with continious use? even tho it is classed as a cinematic camera it is still built like a DSLR and we all know they do over heat :)

      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety +1

      Hey Simon!
      Thank you so much checking the video and commenting!
      There are a couple multi battery sleds (2-4 batt) that i've seen that should be able to power, the question is if you can get a cable to convert that 12v connection to the 2 pin locking male plug for the BMPCC 4k. If someone built a battery grip, as you suggested, that would be a very welcomed accessory!
      We have no idea about overheating until the camera is released. This could be one of those "gotcha" moments that some camera manufactures try to hide. One hopes this camera doesn't overheat, though this sensor is also quite smaller than a super 35 and Full frame so it may not be too bad...but we'll have to wait and see.

    Hi tldr just subbed you, quick question,
    I'm looking to dive into the world of film making, I'm not completely in the dark having done a 2 year film making course in collage years ago but I'm a long way from being a professional, I'll be traveling in Europe for 11months for work with a lot of free time and id like to use some of this time to making short videos and possibly some sort of language travel vlog(mainly for myself as a task rather then aiming at super youtube success) would you say the new Bm is appropriate?
    The tldr; need camera to make vlog+personal arty stuff+recording some live theatre, want to learn film craft soooo--is bbpc 4K a good choice?
    Great video, thanks again!

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety +1

      Hey Thomas!
      Thank you so much for subscribing and asking your question!
      It really will depend on your overall budget, but based on what you want to do, I wouldn't say to invest into the BMPCC4k, that camera is a camera meant to be rigged up and operated with a team behind it. Yes you can do it on your own, but I think you can get the same results and spend less time working on the back end with a GH5s.
      The combination I would suggest to keep your travels easy is:
      GH5s: amzn.to/2GpLWsW (Affiliate link)
      Olympus 12-100: amzn.to/2GNDEeS (Affiliate link)
      These two paired together will give you an extraordinary range so that you can get every type of shot you would need for your vlog and anything else. The GH5s dual ISO performance will help you battle the lower light situations when using this lens. A user commented on my GH5s video with this exact combination so you can see some footage shot with it. czcams.com/video/BP-_eQOkdDo/video.html
      As I talked about in the video, do not let the price point of the BMPCC4k fool you, you will be spending a good amount of money on the back end to store and work on the footage. Anything additional thing you need to help you shoot will require you to buy additional accessories to rig up the camera (most likely the flip out screen). The panasonic's also have an amazing smartphone app that you can use to activate and see your camera if you have it set up further from you, which I think will be a great asset for your travels in Europe.
      I know the black magic sports a lot of great features, but people forget that it is more geared towards a large production that require some professional formats. You can still get nearly the same types of "feel" in your footage once you learn how to shoot it with the GH5s. Having "flexibility" in post production is not always the answer, because and entire other skill set to learn while you shoot. My best advice that I learned later in my film work is "Get it as close as you can for the final output in camera." Once you learn this and how to achieve it, you will create much faster and spend less time in front of the computer.
      That being said, there are definitely people that love the process of post production. For me I'd like to finish the project quickly so that I can create the next vision, but I also understand that certain projects require more post production, and when I know that, I plan accordingly during production so that I'm not pulling my hair out afterwards.
      Sorry if this reply sounds all over the place, but TLDR: I think you will be best served with the GH5s and Olympus 12-100 so that you can keep your travels light, have all the focal lengths you need in one lens. The battery life is amazing in the GH cameras. And you'll have a powerful camera thats good in lowlight and also has V-log if you want to dive into more colorgrading aspects as you perfect your skills with the camera.
      Hope this helps!

      Thank you for the detailed reply! It's not vague at all I think, I understand what you're saying and, in truth, my question was probably a little vague....I was a tired when I wrote the message this morning I'd been up for a while..
      I think I need to focus on gaining skill with a camera and I also love the idea of lowering trouble in post production... the footage is very impressive. Is it better to start with a zoom that has a huge range rather then a small set of primes? My budget is not unlimited but I'm willing to spend alot if it's the right stuff that fits perfectly-allows me to work on everything I need to.
      I just got shot by shot by Steven d. Katz I realise I may be teetering dangerously close to the edge of 'failed middle class man with a hobby' territory...

      Anyway I think I've really written something a bit confusing and directionless now...ops

      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety

      Not a problem!
      In terms if its better to start with a long zoom or a set of primes, it truly depends on your style. I have two reasons why I suggested that specific zoom lens
      1) Usually that entire focal range is broken up into two lenses (12-35mm and 35-100) While its true those two zoom lenses are f/2.8 instead of f/4.0, I don't feel that extra stop really means much in the long run, you'd be saving over $700+ USD by just going with the 12-100mm.
      2) Because you will be traveling and seeing many wonderful sites (jealous, one of these days i'll finally cross the pond) I wouldn't want to take too much time switching lenses. Because chances are a lot of shots I see will happen right in that moment, and id like to be able to capture it quickly.
      You can definitely pair that zoom lens with maybe one or two faster prime lenses to get more background blur and subject isolation. In which case I would suggest either the 25mm f/1.7 or 42.5mm f/1.7 from Panasonic.
      In the end there are many combinations of gear to choose from that will all work if you work within its strengths and weaknesses. I guess the question you may want to ask is, will you mainly want to be walking around and filming as you go, or take time to set up each shot.
      Definitely take your time and watch some more videos of not only the equipment you're thinking about, but some creators that shoot the stuff that you'd like to shoot. That should give you a better idea of what focal lengths you'd want to have in your arsenal as you travel.
      Hope this helps! These links should now lead you to Amazon UK so you dont have to crossmatch anything.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 5 lety +1

      Greetings Dave!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and asking a question!
      This is a bit of a harder question as it will mainly depend on the environment you are in, especially the b-roll portion of the shoot. While this camera will undoubtedly do well and gain you so awesome footage to work with, I feel it may come down to how quickly do you have to move in your typical corporate shoots indoors.
      Will you need to set up lights? Do you generally get a choice of where to set the interviews? Are the places you film generally lit up pretty well and you just have to set up one light or two to get some shape to the talent? Have you worked with other cameras in the past or is this your very very first camera that you will be using to learn on?
      The last question is probably the main one I am wondering. As my experiences continues to grow and as I continue to learn, I actually would come at this question from the other direction in terms of "What lenses and focal length look do you think you will be shooting in most of the time."
      From there you can determine if want to go with native MFT lenses or if you will use full manual super 35 or full frame lenses to achieve the look. From there you can see what budget you have left for the camera body, and then you must calculate how much money you will spend on storage on the back end of production. My concerns still stand that the BMPCC 4k beats any camera at that price range, but it adds up significantly on the back end. Since these are corporate videos, you will most likely want to keep an archive of everything incase you need to bring anything back up for the client.
      Sorry this is jumping everywhere, but just wanted you to see where my mind goes and what my thought processes are. But lets just start with the original important question. "Have you had experiences with other cameras/lenses before, and what where they?"
      Hope this helps!

      I absolutely agree! Depending on my future needs and the scene that needs to be shot, I would love to deploy the BMPCC for outdoor scenes, assuming its not a action sequence since our team has developed a filming system with the GH5's IBIS to capture those sequences.

      That being said I think what might make me jump to this camera eventually, assuming the sensor is pretty good and theres no major problems, is if they do implement Prores RAW into down the line. Lack of viewfinder is a bummer and the screen while nice is fixed with no articulation. Shooting low to ground with GH5/S is a breeze, and even cameras without a flip up screen but with viewfinder with right angle attachment solves the problem. Maybe the bmpcc will offer an accessory that will allow for low angle shots?

      Black Magic do have their own external monitor called the "Video assist" it's a bit pricey for what most of us will do with it, but you can pretty much attach any battery powered HDMI monitor to the BMPCC 4k and use that for any odd angle shots. • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety

      Hey Petite Music Box!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and asking a question!
      These cameras are not beginner cameras because of a few things, mainly the editing after you've shot the footage, however your main goal right now is to learn how to film the footage correctly. Just about every DSLR with a video mode and manual exposure control will help you learn how to film with these cameras.
      That being said, since this is your very first camera, I would suggest that you do not spend a lot of money just yet. As I said, your main goal is to learn how to film.
      - How to set up your camera based on shooting situations
      - Understand what lenses do
      - learn camera movements
      These are just the basics before you start learning how to craft lighting for your short films. I'm not saying this to deter you, I just don't want you to spend your hard earned money on a expensive kit before you learn the basics to see if this is something you really want to do.
      I would start with any used Canon Rebel series DSLRs starting from the Canon T2i and higher. This camera will help you get started as you learn how to work with cameras and its settings, most of these are sold with a kit lens 18-55mm that will suffice. You can usually find a good deal on the older models on eBay for a $200-300 bucks, much better than spending near or over $2000 to get started and learn.
      Hope this helps! Thanks again! Let me know if you have any question!

    Yo, update this video... The new Black Magic Raw file format will bring file sizes down to GH5 levels (28, 50, 150mbps) With that being the case... Combined with Dual Native ISO, and Resolve 15 make it the clear winner this upcoming tax season.

      Hey hey again David!
      Thanks for checking out another video and commenting!
      I so so SOOOO wish CZcams allows use to update videos like Vimeo does instead of taking down a video and re-uploading it all, I have no idea why CZcams doesn't let us do that.
      That being said, if I recall the Black Magic Raw is still in beta at this time and will go to the URSA first. I can't see why they won't put it to the BMPCC 4k eventually, and when they do, it will definitely be a crazy contender.
      I'm not sure if I will be making another BMPCC 4k related video until I get my hands on one. But so far some reviewers have already stated a couple of my concerns in this video from the BMD announcement. If I do make another video to update people, it'll go something like this:
      Basically the BMPCC 4k is, hands down, going to give you the best image quality at this price point, there is no arguing that, the shots people are getting are stunningly beautiful. Where it's causing stumbles is efficiency in deployment, it can't be used as quickly as a DSLR Mirrorless body out of the box and there's some reviewers that are getting slammed for stating this...but it's true and makes sense, I've said it here 5 months ago right at announcement. You can't expect to use this camera like a GH5 or A7s, its not built to work that way and that is something to heavily consider when investing in this camera. If your budget and production time and team allows for it, then by all means, this is the deal of the century! If you're a solo or small budget team filmmaker, then there are factors that need to be considered before diving into this camera.
      At the end of the day, BMD is killing it with what they are giving us on the image quality level. It's insane and I'm interested to see what Panasonic and Sony will do for their next video oriented camera. Especially since Panasonic is staying hush hush on their new S line of cameras video codec. Judging by their jump to XQD cards and how fast the write speed of those cards are, I think they may be working on something to attempt to rival higher end codecs, it wont match it, but its going to try. We shall see!
      Thanks again for stopping by! Check you in the next one man!

    I sold my BMPCC to buy the GH5. The thing I love most about it is the full sensor anamorphic mode and desqueeze in monitor. The thing I don't love is the lack of ProRes or raw recording. Since most of my work is shot with anamorphic lenses, I'm not so sure I'm going to buy the BMPCC 4k, which has a native 16:9 sensor.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker

      Hey Tim!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting! That's awesome you got an anamorphic setup! I have a couple ISCO's and a Proskar anamorphic projector lens that I've been playing around with and I can't wait to experiment some more.
      I would like to add one more weird thing, that the GH5 does in anamorphic mode, in that when you use the HDMI to a monitor you are stuck at 4:3 on the monitor. It kind of stinks that when you want to use a monitor to see a larger image that you can't. I'm not sure if Panasonic will try and fix this in another firmware update, maybe its a limitation of the processor?
      Thank you so much again for stopping by, be sure to check back every Wednesday for something new! What kind of videos do you enjoy filming with your anamorphic setup?

      I've only shot one project with the GH5 and this particular anamorphic setup. It's a music video, and has not been released yet, but I'll be glad to share once the band is ready to make it official. My anamorphic lens is the Sankor 16C, in front of a Nikon 50mm f1.4. I have an SLR Magic Rangefinder in front to focus. The Sankor 16C is one of the cheaper anamorphic adapters out there, but I really like the look it produces.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety

      Please do share when the band is ready, would love to check it out!
      I've debated on the SLR Magic Rangefinder, its definitely an awesome option, the part that bugs me is the way the adapter extends as you rack focus, they definitely have the means to update the design, but theres probably not a whole lot of us guys out there looking to do some anamorphic work.
      There is another single focus solution thats maybe a little less known, they are some videographers out of Chicago I think and they've continued to build and design single focus adapters for anamorphics, I'm going to see if I can get ahold of one eventually to test. From their videos it seems to do well.
      Would love to know more about your thoughts on the Range Finder and how well it worked for your needs and expectations!

    The target audience for this camera seems to be (both) the occasional consumer end user with a limited budget as well as the film production company with the budget in mind in adding up to five camera angles to their shoots. Ya sure it has its limits, but it also is versatile for fitting in tight places as well as drones and gimbals, so ya, definitely some serious thinking for those who want those extra camera angels, which I think is a game changer for the indie film crowd.

      You are absolutely right, there are two camps that are looking at this camera. I'm definitely still at the level were budget really matters and I have to plan accordingly, but the day where I get a larger working budget, I am so happy that this camera is available at such a crazy price point.

      it is a tool that can add greater dimension to any film and still allow for the budget to be spent in other ways. No doubt Blackmagic is looking to crush the competition with increased volume brought in by a low price, I mean even their pro version is cheaper than any other camera in the same category. With the increase of high-speed fiber optic and unlimited internet broadband now becoming the norm, film production will feel this floodgate opening worldwide in the coming decades. Mastering your craft and knowing how to do just that is made easier with more budget-friendly equipment. Expect to see Blackmagic around for a long time to come.

      Hey Tony!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!
      For me I'm almost halfway there in terms of justifying the use of such a camera, mainly because after I import my GH4 and GH5 footage for a short or a feature, I convert them to Prores Proxy for editing.
      The good thing is that storage is getting cheaper to come by for the Post production end as well as In-production. So I think as I continue to work my way into this transition I just need to figure out what codec format I want to use for what projects.
      For example, if Prores RAW does come to the BMPCC4k. I would see if I can use RAW for outdoor sequences and for any in-studio pre-lit scenes would be shot on Prores422 since there isn't as much variance in that type of setting where I would feel the need for RAW. This theoretically gives me the best of both worlds while keeping my storage needs down on set and in post. Not sure if this is ideal, but its what I'm thinking so far.
      Until then we are also nearing the age of h.265 becoming the preferred compressed standard with high quality compression in a bitrate file. Not sure how NLE's will treat this and how future cameras will transition into this codec to give us even better quality from this type of compression vs the old h.264.
      TLDR: In the end it really depends on what your project is. I wouldn't shot RAW for every thing and I wouldnt necessarily convert my h.264 footage to ProresProxy for everything. All my videos here are just edited in straight h.264 However I feel in the next feature or two as RAW becomes more accessible, I may slowly begin incorporating RAW into my filming approach for certain scenes to ensure I get the best continuity of shots.
      Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Check back every Wednesday for something new!

    Hopefully Black Magic fixed the low light on this one. I'm in the boat of choosing between this and the GH5s. I have 4TB for a video drive, but I'm guessing that ProRes and Raw are going to make me buy 10 extra hard drives 😂

      I also hope that with the sensor being able to go to much higher ISO's than what I remember from their other cameras that they've been working on their sensors processes to make the camera a little more "run and gun" friendly!
      Hard drives are definitely going to drive the operating price of this camera up, especially if you've got projects that require a backup system so that you don't run the risk of losing the entire production.

    Obviously it really comes down to the images the bmpcc4k can produce; why I'm waiting, but it's at the top of my wish list ready to order. Instead of spending 1000.00 on CFast cards, you can record directly to a USB-C mini hard drive. I'm looking forward to using this camera.

But yes, if I was to go with the BMPCC 4k, I would probably also do the SSD recording method! I'm definitely still excited that this camera exists, I hope this jolts Sony and Panasonic to put certain features into their next cameras ahead of schedule because of BMD disrupting the flow.

      I was secretly hoping someone like you, who understands film & cinema, would get the BMPCC4k so I could see it being used correctly as it was intended. If you ever rent or borrow, I'll be watching. Do you have a video on color and the GH5/ GH5s? Only a few videos I've seen out of thousands, it seems, have properly color graded scenes; most have red skin tones.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety

      By all means I still would love to play with the camera just to see what its capable of. Assuming BMD doesn't have any statements like "Oh yea that feature, thats not coming until a firmware next year." Unfortunately thats the stigma they have to live with for awhile because of their earlier gen cameras, so I hope they prove us wrong this time around.
      Assuming its ready to go out of the box, I have some time and budget to dedicated for a rental. I plan to do camera reviews differently than others, I hope one of these days my channel gets large enough for companies to warrant me worthy of taking their cameras for a real world spin.
      I do not have a video on color just yet, Caleb Pike from DSLR Video Shooter has a nice comparison between the two as well as showing the GH5s to have more "Canon like" colors. As far as what I've noticed, all my videos after my GVM LED review, I now use the GVM on the Tungsten Setting with a custom WB. Before I was using Philips LED light bulbs (yes I have a video on here too lol) that were daylight balanced with a custom WB. It seems that if you are in the daylight range, the GH5 will lean the skin tones towards yellow a little bit, but if you custom WB a tungsten source, it will hit the skin tones 100%. Not sure why this is but its something I noticed.

    I'm 100% gonna get this. It it's not everything I'm expecting, I'll just return it. To me, I tried the BMPCC and I can't go back to compressed after having a taste of RAW. Fuck that.
    So I really have no alternative. It would have to be really bad for me not to keep it, just because I know what they could do 3-4 years ago, I can't imagine what they can do with it in a bigger body now.
    The whole "but files too big" thing.. Meh. I'll just correct and save in a less crazy codec and then if I ever need those files again, I didn't have to store raw, but I get a great image because I corrected before saving compressed.

      Hey hey Yuc0n!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting your experiences with RAW!
      Theres going to be a day when I finally make that jump into that territory and I will probably have the same feeling as you! What I'm most excited about is if BMD will eventually get ProresRAW in there, I'm liking what I see on the white paper and peoples limited experience with it so far, ProresRAW might be my first leap.
      Other than that, I am heavily considering deploying a couple of these cameras, assuming no major problems arise, as my principle outdoor camera for my next film since our team doesn't have the budget to control as much of the outdoor light changing conditions as we'd like.

    I already purchased the GH5s knowing that Blackmagic was releasing this camera soon. I also preordered the BlackMagic so I can compare the two. Either I will end up keeping both if they compliment each other or I will end up selling one. I have a feeling I will end up selling my GH5s. I originally purchased it due to the lowlight capabilities and improved color over the GH5. I knew there was a caveat. Although the GH5s does better in low light, which would be better suited for run and gun, it also lacks stabilization. I naively believed that I could either do without the stabilization or that I could purchase a gimbal which wouldn't be too much to carry and setup, but after working with it I know that I cannot shoot without a gimbal and that setting up my gimbal with all the bells and whistles required is not conducive to run and gun style shooting. I am aware of the lack of stabilization on the new BlackMagic but if the video quality is better, which it surely looks like on paper and from the footage released, and the dual iso is as good as or better the the dual iso in the GH5s I will most likely keep the new BM for cinema type shoots on a gimbal and maybe even trade in my GH5s for a GH5 because the in body stabilization will allow me to just pull it out and use it without too much of a hassle. Then I will have two prosumer video cameras that compliment each other. My only question now is whether the push pull focus system I purchased for my Zhiyun crane will work with the BM camera and from whether it will even fit on that gimbal at all. I am willing to sell my current gimbal to buy one that offers those features and plays along with the BM camera.

      Hey S Burgos!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!
      You and I are on the same bout in terms of thinking pairing up the new BMPCC 4k and a GH5. I just released a video today talking about all the new news we are seeing from BMD and it would seem that the camera does a darn good job even when up to ISO 3200 (with some post processing I'm assuming from the videographers, not sure how it looks straight outta camera at ISO 3200)
      The BMPCC 4k would definitely be my outdoor camera of choice because of how well it can handle the harsher lighting as well as giving me room for error. Will probably have to invest in some native MFT lens that have OIS incase I have to go handheld. My GH5 would be secondary angles and probably more useful indoors in controlled lighting environments.
      Its definitely a very exciting time for us filmmakers with this BMPCC 4k coming out. While I definitely love the idea, I'm not liking how many extra hard drives I'm going to need to buy to store and backup all the data on large feature film projects...especially since I'm known to use anywhere from 3-6 cameras at a time to cover a scene or sequence.

      Haha I totally understand, believe me, thats not my real speaking voice. I created this channel with the theory of "contrast", if viewers don't see/hear contrast they become bored. A painting with one color does not hold well, but if you add a 2nd color, whether it be the canvas or paint, you get contrast and the viewers begin to see images. So thats why I have the beginning intro contrasting how I speak in the "learning" portion.
      Anyways, that's the theory behind it, its not for everyone, but I'm sure not many viewers want to hear my normal speaking voice for both sections as I've been told I put people to sleep with my normal speech pattern and crooning tone haha.

    My main reason for my next video camera is low light performance, i know by reviews that the gh5s (not the gh5) is a monster in low light, gets good video with minimum noise, so does anyone knows if the BMPCC 4K is at least as good in low light as the GH5S ?

      Jason Mercieca no one knows yet, we will have to see some footage, but the difference seems to be that BMPCC4k does not apply any Noise reduction, but GH5S does, so the footage from BM might look noisier, however, more controllable in post production.

      Hey Bert!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!
      A couple thoughts have evolved in terms of what would make me want to jump over to the BMPCC 4k for my film work.
      - If BMD announces that they will allow people to film with the new ProresRAW codec, that would be a major jumping point for me because I really like how that codec performs and saves on space compared to CinedngRAW.
      - Lastly just wanting to see some sample footage even if it comes from BMD to see where this new sensor compares against the Ursa or Ursa Mini.
      - If proresRAW comes into play, this camera would actually become my principle camera for outdoor scenes. For indoor scenes this cameras importance, in my production situations, becomes less. If all lighting is dialed in then my GH5 can look similar to the other higher end cameras (with minor color adjustments to match)
      Perhaps I should make a follow up video before the originally announced release date of this camera...hopefully BMD delivers. But until then, I have decided not to pre-order at this time because I do not know the future of ProresRAW and BMD use of that codec.

      Hey man, beautiful work on your channel! Do you write all the voiceovers that you do in your videos? Very deep thoughts and mirrors ideas that I always sit back and philosophize about. I love how you compose your shots and the transitional style of your recent videos, they remind me of a slower version of Tony Scott's transitions in his films.
      Keep up the great work, Melvin, your transitional shots is making me think about the visual esthetics for my next independent feature film thats slated for 2019 or 2020 for production. Perhaps we can collaborate together on that when the time comes. It's going to the sequel to my first story that you can see the trailer for here, czcams.com/video/G_SgqEfoNFs/video.html.

    If you’re going to use the bmpcc to compliment your current cameras then go ahead and preorder because even if it’s a mess you’ll still be able to review it before selling it.
    If your plan is to replace your current cameras then wait and see. I wouldn’t believe anything Blackmagic says until I see it.

      Sean Sims yes thats the thing, for me gets even worse cause i want to replace my full kitted Canon XHA1 with Gates Underwater housing thats fully equipped, i mean fully, its a £15000 gear plus few extras also.
      So my concern is low noise performance, if its as good as the gh5s i go for it but i will wait till others but it to make sure, cause for me its camera+housing+lights +7"external monitor all for underwater filming, and the total amount of expenses will go over £6000 for sure.
      I wont let go of my gear till im 100% sure.
      Please let me know if u have any knowledge if its equal to the gh5s low light performance, mamy thanks ...

      Greetings @Sean Sims,
      While still contemplating I'm actually beginning to lean away from pre-ordering the camera based on how my teams workflow and project timeframes are like. I have no doubt it would be a decent camera, but it's starting to feel like not the camera for me and the team. However...damn do I want to play with it and still film a short project with it just to relay some information to you guys...so...I may still pre-order...maybe.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety +1

      Hey hey @Jason Mercieca!
      My total guess is that the BMPCC 4k will be "noisier" than the GH5s, the reason I think this is because the Blackmagic Cameras are truly more for cinema post production teams and productions that want to have as much control of the native raw image. Because of the nature of the GH5 series, there will be some post-processing already done inside the camera before going to your SD card, not just compression.
      Again this is only a guess, because despite the price points and similar tech spec, these two cameras are still technically in different classes of video production. Hope this helps, until we see some real life production footage!

      Thanks, yes patience always pays up positively, i invested a bit in my current gear and im really happy with it, i will wait till its out and i can compare side by side noise levels in low light, hope its tested as good as the nikon d850 vs gh5s, gh5s knocks off by far the d850 and others in regards to video for what i have seen.
      I will wait and judge when its out, thanks again

    This BMPCC4K truly looks like the sweetest stickiest cake in the shop but Sept seems months away ! sorry English irony ! I'd really like to know if the heat issues have really really been solved or are they depending on the Carb Fib carbonate to be a radiator. Be useful to see when it's released if they publish and melt downs figures . I'm still in love with my GH5 but time will tell. Maybe Mkii will be a wise option. Can't argue with the price tho. amazing ! (thinking and discussing)

      The real question is, is it vanilla cake or chocolate cake? Haha. It will definitely be interesting to see how the camera handles heat, "time will tell" as you said. I too am loving my GH5, it's done honorably, like my GH4, in every situation I've put it through from the cold winters to hot summers. To a certain degree...I'm not sure if I really require a GH5s.

    • @Silentaudits7
      @Silentaudits7 Před 6 lety +1

      I got to agree with you on that, to trade in my 5 for a 5s would lose me over a grand just for a tickle in low light. Thank heavens it's not an Apple Slice or you would get weird videos being forcibly downloaded into your custard files haha ! , back to the core subject (sorry ;-) ) I'm going to get the Sigma 16mm 1.4 in a week or two so as well as going wider than the 12-60 2.8 leica that came with it It will go for better low light anyway...and I hear that the 5s is needing several firmware updates already !! My 5 has all the stuff up to 2.2 and if you reduce to 179d from 180d it does magic with the auto focus .

      Thank you so much for checking out the video and asking a question!
      Unfortunately the BMPCC 4k does not have IBIS :(
      The most likely reason for it is similar to the GH5s where larger productions need a sensor to be truly solid for the type of stabilization they use for faster rougher filming conditions. I hope camera companies will develop a new generation of IBIS soon that is able to lock completely and also perform as good as the GH5 IBIS!

    Why are people keep comparing it to GH5? Your math doesnt even add up, why do i need to buy a new computer for this camera and not GH5? Ever heard of editing with proxies? Also who only buys one battery? Do you just use one battery with your GH5? And no flip out screen... I'm actually glad they did this. I hope it stops beginners from buying this. Last thing we need is 4k 60fps RAW youtuber trying to post selfie videos.

      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety +1

      Hey imaxtiger!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!
      I think we’re both saying the same message with what you said at the end, this camera is not for beginners. The price point sounds wonderful and its giving all the things beginners hear from other filmmakers that are a little further along in their careers.
      I don’t believe my math is off because I’m thinking about the longer game with this camera instead of the short game. A lot of the work I do is with feature length action films, so I’ll need a good amount of SSD’s or Cfast 2.0 cards to handle a typical day, especially if we’re shooting CinemaDNG raw. With media costing $120-300 a disk depending on which medium and capacity, it adds up real quick for the production side.
      Batteries, I would imagine most user would go for an external 12v source instead of using the Canon LP6 battery, for longer duration and faster battery swaps if the camera is rigged up.
      Now we need to factor in storage for all the data and backup copies for the project, even more so because of converting and editing with Proxies if your computer is not up to snuff (yes I use Proxies)
      These are just the factors I think about assuming that the filmmaker already has a computer with a decent processor and GPU depending on their editing system.
      Now the kicker, this is just for one singular camera… Filmmakers quickly find out that two cameras would go a long way to make a production day faster. I’ve used up to six cameras before, to ensure my stuntmen don’t have to perform a multi person fight or stunt more than 2 times.
      TL;DR: In the long term, this camera will cost more to operate per project than a GH5 because of filming with RAW. If you film in Prores instead and get the look into the camera instead of messing too much in post, you won’t reach the financial ROI fall point as quickly, and you save time in post production so you can get onto the next project.
      In the end, I think both of our message is the same, its not a beginner camera and I believe the price point and feature set is misleading for beginners. This is why I compare it against the GH5 and GH5S.
      Thanks again for checking out the video! What kind of video projects do you enjoy filming?

  • @Reyfox1
    @Reyfox1 Před 6 lety

    A little late to the party... the cost will attract a lot of people. But as you said, there is more to this than just the camera. Look at the cost of storage media for one. I'll wait to see how it goes in the real world with real users pounding away on it before clicking the "Buy" button. But you can't argue about that price.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety

      Hey hey Anthony!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!
      Absolutely! I can't wait to see some people put it through its paces, a lot of the storage rebuttles have gone to "I'll just use SSD's", while totally valid as SSD's are definitely cheaper than a SD and Cfast 2.0 card...but how are they going to mount it were the USB plug doesn't get accidently disconnected or broken. It would have been nice to know that BMD made sure there was some sort of lock to keep those plugs in place...but I'm sure Smallrig is already on it.
      Definitely can't argue the price, not just for RAW but to be able to record directly to prores and LOG... In theory there shouldn't be a lot for me to hate on the camera based on that concept alone, but still, can't wait to see what peoples user experience is like!

      Subbed with notification. I am really a run and gun shooter. I travel on bike with a backpack and Panasonic M43 cameras. I shoot mostly UHD 4K. I know that PCC 4K is more of a "lock down tripod" camera, but again, the cost. I've seen ProRes RAW grading, and all I can say is "WOW". Which brings the question of computing horsepower required, which can add to the cost of using the camera. You've brought up some "real world" considerations and have me possibly rethinking... and not being caught up in the "hype" of "new".

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety +1

      I'm not sure if Black Magic has announced that they will be adapting Prores RAW yet. I feel it's a no brainer that they will adapt it and offer it, but ya know...companies gotta be all secretive and make us guess. Prores RAW definitely has me very interested because of its smaller file size compared to CineDNG RAW, especially if exposed correctly before recording.
      Depending on the lens you pair with the BMPCC 4k, I think if you use native MFT lenses that have OIS, it can still be a nice run and run setup that offers high quality recordings without all the attachments. But idk... V90 SD cards and Cfast 2.0 cards are still quite expensive at this current time to really cut down on the bulk of your camera setup, attaching an SSD securely is still a concern.
      Time will tell, hopefully they make the date and ship out sometime next month!

    • @KodieBlue
      @KodieBlue Před 6 lety +1

      It took the update from black magic a few years to come out. So it goes without saying it won't be from them. But when I look at what Canon and Nikon are doing with Cinema at this price point, theres no comparison. But whats amazing is that Black magic is competing with 10,000 dollar cinema cameras at almost 1/10th the price and their company is much smaller. It seems that Canon, Nikon, Sony Panasonic, etc have a difficult time doing the same because they have to design their bodies around both stills and video. This use to take alot of wiggle room away from the ability to do this. But I'm having trouble seeing how it does at all in 2018 when the cost of Truly Professional Hardware and software is where it's at in price now. Mind you, these companies are huge in size in comparison to Black Magic. So Black Magic is proving one way or another, anyone can put Pro Hardware into the hands of Professionals for an Admirable and Dignified price. This tells me one thing. If these other companies are going to go Big in the video segment, they all need to do it now. Because 8 bit internal and 10 bit external isn't cutting it for the Professionals in the Video Segment. , They need to take a page from BlackMagic to see what can be done about that. Everything else is already in these hybrid and mirrorless bodies for a truly Professional Cinema system to be incorporated. The user interfaces are ancient compared to Black Magics but they're in there. The proper readout of their sensors is what's missing. Or possibly the proper sensors. So they want and do try to charge you 6,000-10,000 for that. You get all of this plus much more from Black magic for 1300. So yes. I agree. Good times are among us. We can than Black Magic for this gift if you will. The ability to create Truly professional Cinema without having to cut so many damn corners lol. This is why they are creating so much disruption in this market. They're cornering it...

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety +1

      Definitely, @Aaron!
      I really admire Blackmagic for disrupting the market harder than Panasonic and Sony. Sadly I have a hunch that the BMPCC 4k is going to get some hate in the beginning when initial reviews come out, be it the image isn't "clean" in super non lit situations, or that certain recording cards don't work even though its rated for it...etc, in my eyes this is what hurts Blackmagic the most, even though they make great cameras after 1-2 years of firmware updates.
      Their camera launches, from what I can remember, have never been met with overwhelming praise and the tarnish in the beginning seems to set people back in the long run from wanting to pre-order right away. I think the reason other companies charge a bit more is from the R&D + testings phases before launch and BMD has its loyal followers do the testing for them from pre-orders and then in 1-2 years you get the camera you paid for.
      Aside from the the black sun spot fiasco, the original BMPCC was not able to reformat cards or erase takes in-camera, which confused so many of us when reviews came out.

This is a good argument for better sound options.But we will see what comes. I will yous the two weeks to test it very intensivly. If it fits, i keep it, if not i return it.

      That's awesome there is a 2 week return policy requirement! I totally hear you about the color correction in terms of codecs, sometimes on set we are rushed against time and a camera op may have not payed attention to the exposure and color and it becomes a problem in post. That being said, I'm really excited for ProresRAW and to see where it goes if it will make its way into BMD cameras and others. I think the company is definitely heading in the right direction, not sure if this camera could be the first that comes out of the gate as "acceptable", but they are definitely learning.
      I've only ever used their BMPCC and Original BMCC once, and while it may have been weird to use, I couldn't argue that they didn't produce some nice looking image.
      For me the deal breaker right now is time on set, the productions I'm with are generally very fast and we don't have a huge team to rig up cameras and work with these file sizes off the bat. But if the day ever comes where our team is asked to produce something for Netflix, I hope this camera is deemed acceptable on their list as it would be a wonderful budget camera for Netflix specifications.

      Hey Ehab!
      Black Magic has said that there is a photo mode for the BMPCC 4k, however I have no idea how well the camera would actually do with photography needs as this is primarily a cinema camera. If you need a hybrid camera I would suggest looking at either the Panasonic GH5 or Sony A7iii. If you only want to do photography then I'm not sure what to research as each camera has their strengths for certain types of photography. Hope this helps!

      A bit dialogue heavy on my part, but definitely exciting as @Wolfcrow has recently given us some comparisons between these two cameras (Gh5) with an Alexa in the mix as well as some other awesome tests. We share some similar opinions on the matter so I would definitely check out his recent videos as he's gotten to put the BMPCC4k through its initial paces!

    Blablabla...the felt one thousandth report on the BMPC 4K. Nothing new from people who have barely experience with this camera! Boring, sorry! And always these comparisons! Most of the people do nice impressions film but not more! Today's cameras are almost all useful for professional use. Go out, turn and stop talking ... ;-)

      Dude, don't be sorry, a lot of my thoughts and discussion type videos are not what people are expect. I don't enjoy taking anything at face value, instead I try to see how I would use the camera and if I foresee anything to be a problem before it becomes a problem.
      For me, the main problem I saw, for me and my budget productions, was that even though the price is amazing, I knew that I would end up spending more money in the long run to kit and run the BMPCC4k vs the GH5/GH5s.
      That being said, this video was also released a week after the BMPCC 4k was first announced back in early 2018, so if you were wanting a direct comparison, it was impossible at the time of this video.
      Other than that, you are completely correct, any camera these days or within the past couple years are more than enough to create something professional. In the end it's not about the camera at all, its about what you put in front of it, how you light it, and how you direct it etc.
      Anyways, I appreciate you stopping by in the comment section even if you didn't enjoy the video. What kind of videos do you enjoy filming? I primarily film action movies dealing with gun-play or hand to hand combat.

  • @nandoblondemobydick5438

    download a at RED.com a Red dragon file and you will see what RAW means for your computer, wise reasonig the your, i agree totally with you, it´s moving to a high end production quality, so it would be lot more expensive than it seems at first glance, but you still can do what the GH5 s do at a lower cost, but not what the GH5 does, i´m photographer so here, i really don´t know what to do, get 8 bit in video and a FF like Sony A7 III and do great shots or a mix of both worlds with the GH5? between a GH5s and BMPCC 4K, for me the BMPCC is the way to go, if today your computer can´t handle RAW files you are prepared for future,
    Comparing to a Red Dragon obviously the sensor is lot Bigger on the RED, take a look at frames comparison and you will see, that´s why RED is far away from this little camera, but RED is for high end and well paid film makers, Arri, or whatever cost a lot of money, that does not mean some great director sometimes use inclusive a go pro in their big Hollywood production for certain scene or whatever if space and weight is a problem for a scene

      I do love the benefits of RAW video and I have a feeling in the near future I may begin to deploy these RAW capable cameras for outdoor scenes in my work. Mainly because I love what ProresRAW seems to be able to do, so I'm waiting to see how well I can implement it. Until then, as you agreed, production budget is something I am forced to juggle as an independent filmmaker. I hope one day I reach the level where someone will be investing in me to make a movie, and when that day comes I will be able to make more decisions on deploying higher end Codecs when needed.

      Definitely a little bit on the pineapple and durian side of things, but that dual ISO system definitely has us guessing. Though with all the sample footage BMD is putting out, there's definitely more to the magic in that Pocket 4k and how its processors are working. Very exciting times!
      Now the question is, apples to apples, if Panasonic is really announcing a FF camera from their camp this month, is it gonna be more photography, video, or do a Sony thing with 3 different priority models? And would this be any sort of taking a stab at BMPCC 4k somehow?

      I totally understand where you're coming from, however while I occasionally watch Mr. McKinnon from time to time, our way or delivering content and information is quite different visually and verbally. But I get it, simply saying "what's up" instead of Mr. McKinnon's iconic "BWA-ts up" is enough to draw some similarities.
      That being said, I do have a fun exercise I plan to do where I will make a video in the same style as Mr. McKinnon; visually for practice and verbally for acting practice. It's definitely going to take some work because of how he composes and lights his b-roll shots along with his unique speech pattern when he's doing his moving vlogging shots.
      Anyways, I hope you and I will be able to see some hands-on experiences with the BMPCC 4k soon! I have no doubts the camera is going to be fine technically, but I'm more curious on how it does out in the field.

    its a 4/3 sensor, not a micro 4/3 sensor, youd need an adapter if you want to used m4/3 lenses

    • @Koitz
      @Koitz Před 6 lety +1

      You're wrong, 4/3 and micro 4/3 uses same sensor size, the only change is flange distance and lens mount. In BMPCC4k lens mount is m4/3 (it's nonsense to use an old mount as 4/3 is).

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety

      Hey Choochificational!
      @Jou Lozano is correct, this is a bit of odd marketing text from BMD as I think most filmmakers were not as familiar with 4/3 systems before M43 came to popularity. I'm definitely interested in seeing how current MFT lenses from Olympus and Panasonic work with the BMPCC 4k.

    • @Choochificational

      @I5H78 Před 6 lety

      @Choochificational is right, it is a FourThirds sensor, micro4/3 is the name of the lensmount.
      The Olympus’ and Panasonic’s old DSLR lensmount was also called 4/3

      As much as I enjoy apple for the last 10 years and use FCPX as my main NLE and what Blackmagic can do if they had Apple funding behind their ideas...I hate to say that I feel apple would ruin it somehow. Integration would be great for them but not great for the rest of us that use other software in our overall work.
      I'm really rooting for BMD to continue what they are doing, I'm pretty sure my next feature will be entirely edited/vfx in Davinci while deploying a couple BMPCC 4K cameras!

      That being said, it's definitely a dialogue heavy video and it's really geared towards filmmakers that like to look for alternative ideas beyond the specs given, which is definitely not everyones cup of tea. I like to think beyond what's said as I often need to think of creative ways to accomplish certain looks on the independent films I work on. My ability to quickly realize how I can use a tool is extremely important on and off the set, this helps me better choose which gear to use and invest in.

      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 5 lety +1

      Now now guys that's enough of that. Back to the sincere question, @cluxseltoot, what kind of videos or films do you enjoy filming? My favorite type of films to direct and film are mainly Action films with either gun play or hand to hand combat. I enjoy working along with the stunt teams and fight choreographers as we craft the look for the scene through lights and camera movements.
      Here are some examples of the films I worked on as the DP:
      czcams.com/video/G_SgqEfoNFs/video.html (my movie, director)
      czcams.com/video/N1ICk2C4Pf8/video.html (My friends movie, DP)
      Not sure if I will ever direct and film a drama, but maybe one of these days if the right story comes alone and I can see the movie in my head. I generally don't like to work on projects if I can't visually see it in my head first, I draw from those first imaginations to craft my ideas for lighting and camera placements.

      I totally agree, if they essentially turned this BMPCC 4k into a Ursa mini-mini...Ursa Micro? Man that would be amazing! The battery may not be a big deal because they offer the option for you to plug in some sort of 12v source, that shouldn't be too bad. The question that someone in the comments brought up was if this camera will have heating issues. Time will tell!

      @davidmultimedia2024 Před 6 lety

      What would be the difference? Isn't it already kinda like a BMCC V2?
      It is a lot bigger than the original Pocket
      It has a big 5'' screen on the back
      M43 sensor with less crop
      4K instead of 2.5K
      The new pocket seems to have all the features of the BMCC with a lot more.
      Also, the form factor of the BMCC and BMPC 4K has always been an issue IMO.
      The new Pocket form factor seems just right to me.
      I agree that they should have made an articulating screen though, like an ursa micro.
      But I think the size is just right.
      A true cinema camera (with OLPF) that will be small and light to use on small gimbals/steadycam, and is more subtle for indie filmmaking.
      It's hard to go shoot a movie in public with big cameras and rigs...without authorization lol.
