  • First look at the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K shows the best video camera for indie film makers and vloggers. The BMPCC 4K was just announced at the NAB 2018. It records 4K 60p 4:2:2 ProRes. Alternatively, 12-bit RAW footage will give us lots of color space for color grading.
    And it is sold for an incredibly low price.

    The think with this camera is that you need some stuff, i.e : battery is quite bad (you have roughly 40 minutes with the one you get in the box) so start adding for that. Then, the screen is quite bad in sunlight or even outdoor - so add an extra screen. RAW shooting is SUPER heavy in terms of files size (talking TBs here for a "reasonable" shooting). The battery is placed under like any DSLR which makes no sense in terms of workflow. Sure, image quality is AWESOME but there are a LOT of things you want to by to have it somewhat usable and that's some money right there.
    I also hesitated a lot between the GH5s and the BMPCC 4K but could not justify the final price for what I do. Both great cameras though - thanks a lot for your great video ;)
    Cheers!

      So did you end up going with the GH5s? I initially bought the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema camera 4K and accessories... but its just so heavy and annoying to take anywhere. I am considering selling it to get a GH5s simply for portability. What would you say?

  • @MaxLeithner
    @MaxLeithner  Před 6 lety +30

    I think I will keep the GH5s anyway. :) I looooove the 240p slomo (used in the beginning of the video.) I guess I will use it as a second camera + slomo camera + when I am traveling and do something vlogging style like, as for traveling and vlogging I think the smaller form factor and the flip out screen are a benefit. Plus it looks better hahaha :D

      @MaxLeithner  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks man, I am glad you notice the effort I put into this. Before the BMPCC came out, I bought a GH5 and a GH5s. I started using the GH5 most of the time because of its IBIS. I love how I can get smooth handheld shots with the GH5. I only use the GH5s for low light. However I still think that the BMPCC4K and also the 6K are amaaaazing cameras producing great image quality. Compare the highlight roll off between the Blackmagic cameras and the Panasonic cameras - huge difference to my eye. That being said, I will continue using the GH5 and the GH5s for my wedding films for a while. If you want to see what I get out of the GH5 and the GH5s at weddings, you can take a look here: czcams.com/channels/5bB4-lQCyMdMibomk0JdvA.htmlvideos For commercials. I want to upgrade to a Canon Cinema Camera soon. The C500 II would be the perfect camera for my usage. Unfortunately it is super expensive and I recently bought a Mac Pro, so I am kinda broke haha. Btw. I am currently working on a review of the Mac Pro, so if you have any questions regarding the Mac Pro, hmu :)

      Max Leithner So good to know!! Yes I shoot wedding on the GH5 as well, I’m was just thinking if it’s worth having a BMPCC as an extra camera because it’s so cheap, but for weddings the GH5 is literally perfect. I make short films aswell so I’m in the same boat as you hoping to get a c500 or c200 sometime in the near future haha

      @@Sticks For most weddings this is my setup: The GH5 with the Sigma 18-35 and the GH5s with the Canon 70-200. That way both setups have image stabilisation and I have the GH5s, that I can use for low light at night. You could do the same with the BMPCC, but I am afraid, matching the shots in post might be a bit more work.

    so you want them to make a flip screen just because there a record button on the front? but you ignored the word CINEMA in the name, since when a cinema camera has a flip screen?

    • @MaxLeithner
      @MaxLeithner  Před 6 lety +3

      My point is the button layout shows us it is targeted at vloggers. They even mentioned that in interviews. Cinema cameras most of the times have at least a screen you can twist up and down. So that when you are shooting from a low angle, having your camera on the ground, you would not have to lay behind your camera on the ground.

    • @madeiramedia
      @madeiramedia Před 3 lety

      Actually all canon cinema cameras have a flip ou screens or equivalents (rotational, multi angle screens). And you don't use a flip out screen only to record yourself, but to get low and high angles when filming. Yes it is fixable when getting and external monitor. But it would just be so nice to have it all in camera.

Here is how I showed the dust: I put a light in the back and used the Olympus 75mm. For the first shot where I just threw the box on the table that was it. But for the knife shots I also used the Atmosphere Aerosol spray for showing the motion and air moving after my hand and knife.

    I was considering getting the GH5s as a companion to my Gh5, since I'd still have the ability to shoot with ibis, but the gh5s has better low light. But now, im very much considering the BMPCC4k. No flip out screen doesn't bother me, since if i need that, i have my gh5. I just worry about potential overheating issues that the huge screen, and the raw recording could cause in such a small form camera. Pumped to see some tests of this thing for sure!

    • @MantrixTV
      @MantrixTV Před 6 lety +1

      Blackmagic said to no worry about overheating. There is no problem with that. BMPCC4k have his own cooling fan system. Of course it's incredible that this camera can do that much things and still stay cool but i believe in theirs word.

    • @MaxLeithner
      @MaxLeithner  Před 6 lety

      Yeah, that makes sense. The GH5, I think, is kind of more unique compared to the BMPCC4K, because of it's IBIS. But, since i mainly want to use it for production work, the lack of IBIS doesn't bother me. In fact, I actually prefer the not stabilized sensor, because I use gimbals, tripods, sliders and that stuff. For me, what made me choose the GH5s over the GH5, was not only the low light performance, but especially the lower crop factor (2). With the GH5s in combination with a Speedbooster and full frame lenses, I could get a crop factor of 1.28. That's even lower than the crop factor of the Canon 1Dx II, wich has a crop factor of 1.35 and is super expensive (buuuut is an amazing stills camera as well and has great autofocus, which both is really nice). You can actually see the crop factor difference when I switch the cameras at 1:20. The GH4 has a crop factor of 2.3 (just as the GH5). When switching, I used the same focal length (42.5mm) and kept the tripod at the same distance. At 2:20, I brought the tripod closer to match the GH4 shot. So when you actually compare the GH4 shots that start at 0:20 to the GH5s shots, you should see a difference in shadow depth of field. What do you think about the crop factor?

    • @MaxLeithner
      @MaxLeithner  Před 6 lety

      We don't know, if there will be an overheating issue. I have seen videos where they talked about their cooling system and I hope there will be no problem with that. That said, I really understand Alex's worry about the overheating. I think the low price is worth giving it a chance anyway :)

    • @tooyoung225
      @tooyoung225 Před 6 lety

      I love the crop factor. The idea of getting a near full frame look on a MFT camera is awesome. Thats why i use a speed booster on my GH5. Essentially gives me a S35 crop....As far as the BM and the GH5s, i read the the sensor in the BM is actually the same size as the GH5, which makes it smaller than the GH5s, and it has basically the same iso capabilities. So with that said, I wonder if the low light capabilities of the BM will be able to compete with the GH5s.

    • @MaxLeithner
      @MaxLeithner  Před 6 lety

      Where did you get the numbers from? Blackmagic says on there website the sensor is 18.96mm x 10mm. Panasonic says on theirs the GH5s sensor is 17.3mm x 13.0mm. The GH5s sensor is 4:3. When recording C4K it could only use 17.3mm x 9.12mm. When recording 4K the Blackmagic could use 17.77mm x 10mm and the Panasonic only 17.3mm x 9.73. So I guess the Blackmagic should perform better. When it comes to the GH5, it crops in when recording 4K (just as the GH4, which is also a reason why you can see a difference in field of view, when I switch the cameras in the video). It gives you a crop factor of 2.3, so it uses less sensor size and therefore performs worse in low light. I hope I got that right hahaha but that's how I understood it :)

    I'm sure someone has already said this, but the BM camera is all specs, and it's not even guarenteed that they will be able to deliver all those specs and not on the timeframe they're projecting. Especially seeing as they still haven't released any footage that was recorded on this camera. I rented a GH5s for a wedding this past weekend to pair with my GH5, and I feel like the bmpcc4k would have to be nearly as good as an URSA 4.6k (which I don't think is very realistic) to convince me to use them over the GH5/GH5s combo. BUT if BM is able to deliver even half the features at that price point, it's overall very exciting for the industry.

    • @MaxLeithner
      @MaxLeithner  Před 6 lety +1

      Yes, announced products are never guaranteed to actually come. But why would they announce specs they can't hold? Just to make people mad at them? I have good faith in Blackmagic :D. I think that they haven't published any footage yet might just be their marketing strategy. You know what I mean? They are now waiting for the hype to flatten out and then push it again with the footage release. (Just my personal theory about that haha) I think your GH5 + GH5s is a great combo for weddings but why would it not enough for you, if the BM was just as good or better than the GH5s? Why the comparison with the URSA 4.6K? I mean it's half the price of the GH5s, that's pretty awesome.

    • @DJK83
      @DJK83 Před 6 lety +1

      "...and I feel like the bmpcc4k would have to be nearly as good as an URSA 4.6k (which I don't think is very realistic) to convince me to use them over the GH5/GH5s combo."
      Wait, a $1300 camera would have to match the performance of a $5,000 camera in order for you to use it over a $2500 camera that it will ostensibly outperform? I don't understand that logic. The BMPCC 4k will shoot DCI 4k RAW at 60 fps, and looks to have low light performance similar to the GH5s -- and it does this for half the price. Unless a flip-out screen is so important that you'd rather have it at the expensive of everything else, why would you choose the GH5s?

    • @paulwright717
      @paulwright717 Před 6 lety

      I commented using the wrong account apparently haha. But anyways, the only camera BM has made thus far that I've loved the color science in is the URSA 4.6. Everything else isn't my cup of tea. I've got a variety of reasons why I won't take the P4k seriously right now, and I honestly hope that BM proves me wrong on every front. Raw functionality isn't everything, I think people have to take into account things like workflows and media storage alongside modes like that. Even with the SSD recording on the P4K (which is cool as hell, let's be honest) it is still unreasonable to shoot RAW in many situations.

      @MaxLeithner  Před 6 lety

      I think it depends on your needs. For vlogging I would rather use the Panasonics, due to the better form factor and the flip out screen. For videos like this one and image films where I have time to set up everything, I will give the PCC4K a try, since I think it might give me better image quality. For wedding film making I am not sure yet, since I would need lots of storage for recording with the BM. Aaaand of course it also depends on your budget haha :)... I think image quality and price point will be the things where the PCC4K will really shine at.... oh and I don't care about the evf, it's totally useless for me haha

    I'm torn now. I've been saving up for gh5s, and as soon as I can get it, this is announced. All the specs of it are so tempting, the body size doesn't bother me, unless it weighs 30 pounds. The screen may be an issue, may not. I need to play with my a6300 and leave the screen in to see how annoyed I get. I would think a 5" screen would sorta help to a degree. But do I want to wait another 6 months? I can save a lot of money if I do, but what if the camera becomes a bust? And then I decide 6 months from now to just get the GH5s? I'm sure I would be happy with it, I see people can get really good looks with it, but for the extra $1000 am I going to regret it? I don't really want to buy gh5s and then buy the BM down the road.

    Yes. It looks like a good deal. Only for video 📹 makers. With a Gh5 or A7III you can shoot photographs, so you have 2 in 1. I'm looking forward to this camera 🎥 anyway. I like what this brand has to offer.

    • @MaxLeithner
      @MaxLeithner  Před 6 lety

      Yes, definitely. Both the GH5s and the Blackmagic are video cameras. For photo + video I think the Canon 1dxII would be really nice. Like all the Vloggers and Travelvloggers use (Casey Neistat, Peter McKinnon, Sam Kolder,...) But it costs way more, is a lot heavier, has no WiFi and in 4K even a higher crop factor compared to the GH5s or the PCC4K.

    • @NowyKurs
      @NowyKurs Před 6 lety

      Maximilian Leithner, Canon 1DxII it's a Mercedes G 🚙. Over priced and a toy for the guys with 'bigger' dreams. To get from point A to point B, you can easy work with camera 🎥 1/6 prices of DXII. Currently, you can even make a cinema quality footage, with your mobile. For me DXII it's way to expensive. I'm not sure if I ever consider buying such equipment, but not stopping others if they fill the desire. 💸

    thanx god most "filmmakers" today think on how much dr and how many Ks their footage has. and do not pay attention, that the video has often even no basic story or script. stupid beauty shots in slow motion und no dramaturgy at all. and this is gorgeous. that's why you are still able to win an award in Cannes also with smth like canon t3i or similar cheap equipment. everything you need is a story and a strong willingness just try to tell it. nobody is fucking cares at the end of the day which camera did you use to shoot it. instead of that every one will be interested on WHAT you shoot. cheers

    • @peterleukhardt
      @peterleukhardt Před 6 lety +2

    Thinking of buying the Black Magic in September. I’m just not sure about the expenses that go with it. I was told most computers won’t support the 4K technology either . I don’t want to get in too deep with $$$. I m wondering if I should just go with the GS5.

    • @MaxLeithner
      @MaxLeithner  Před 6 lety

      What do you mean by expenses that go with it? Talking about computers supporting 4K, are you talking about editing or playback? Editing: most computers you buy now should support that, Playback: it is probably true, that most consumers don't watch online videos in 4K yet. However, shooting in 4K gives you imo better quality due to downsizing to 1080p and you get some extra pixels for cropping in and framing your shot or faking "camera movements". I still do not know which camera you mean by GS5?... You mentioned in a former comment that you need it for amateur wedding films. I would recommend the GH5, not the GH5s for that usage.

    I love this! Finally a good video camera. After researching to buy a new camera I'm pissed at the big corporations endlessly creating and protecting their market segments by crippling or reducing features on cameras. Just to try to squeeze every last penny out of their customer base. It's time a new camera shakes the market up.
    I figure for vlogging, you'll also miss the in body stabilization. So you'd really need a gimbal and Instead of a flip up screen you can clip a hdmi monitor on top of your camera. Or use some dual mirror contraption.

    • @MaxLeithner
      @MaxLeithner  Před 6 lety +1

      So true.
      Also true, but I don’t see myself vlogging with a gimbal and an external monitor. That was also the point I wanted to make in this video. It seems like they tried to reach vloggers because of the button layout and they also mentioned vloggers in their interviews. However, it has no ibis, no continuous autofocus and no flip out screen. I would still go with the GH5 for vlogging or maybe some Sony Camera with better autofocus.

    One thing that nobody is talking about in videos (here, you can have this one lol), is its form factor. Trust me Maximilian, I want that camera BAD too - it has so many cool things about it and like you, the straight to HDD option is fucking revolutionary because it closes the gap and makes the entry barrier less to get into the industry.
    But its form factor. That thing is NOT going to fit in any gimbals out on the market. That pretty much renders it useless for people who are looking at a camera in that exact price range.

    Great video! With respect however, the complaint about the lack of a flip out screen is completely irrelevant IMO at this size and price point. No other mirror-less or dslr in any format that I know of has a 5" touch display. You could add a small HD monitor and still be less than half the price of the GH5s setup you described here.
    At $1300, I wouldn't even think to mention a flip out display in my considerations for this body, given how it hits nearly every nail directly on the head.

    • @MaxLeithner
      @MaxLeithner  Před 6 lety

      Thanks for your comment :) I appreciate the 5" screen. However, I talked about vlogging. Not only did they make this camera for indie film makers but also for vloggers, like they say in their interviews. And for vlogging I don't want an external monitor. For me, that would destroy the form factor even more and would be such a pain. For production work, however, where the 5" screen comes in handy, I could easily have used an external monitor. A big rig doesn't bothers me more for vlogging than it does for production work. So I would prefer a small flip out screen over the 5" fixed screen, but that's just my opinion :)

      I think I would probably get a P4K and a GH5. Now, I have the GH5s and I will probably also get a GH5. I want that IBIS for certain situations.

    I won’t order this camera because of the history of the bad quality control. I heard from so many people around me who had been the Blackmagic users about the terrible quality control, none of them used a BMD product without any problem, and usually they are huge problems, one of my friend lost his job because he used a URSA mini pro for a very important meeting recording,everything was perfect but when he came back to office and found that some scenes were damaged by a huge green area, and he got no the second chance to fix that. I heard the stories all time from everyone who had used BMD products..so seriously be carful, if you are a video fan then this thing will be interesting, but if you do videos for living, just forget it, go get a Sony or canon, they are stable and reliable literally

      I have no experience on that. But I read many people commenting on this video, that this really is outdated. You mean the reliable sonys, that overheat like the a7s and stop recording? Hahaha

      I am not here for fighting ok man, I said Sony that doesn't mean the A7S, that's just for video fans, not for job, for job, the FS5 is not perfect but stale enough(if the BMPCC wanna work same like FS5 you need pay more for the accessories then it will be more expensive than FS5), as well what I said, BMPCC 4k is gonna be interesting for the fans, but considering a work machine, it will not be my option ,and BMPCC is M43 system and the adapter ring for other system lens will cost you at least 600$, it's same for Panasonic but the GH5S is way stabler, that's what I mean a work machine. I don't make the story of the quality control of BMCC or other BMD products, please just go google that, you don't have the bad experience on it that's great, but doesn't mean others won't. Here I just give my experience, I do appreciate they made such a camera by listening the customers about what they need, that's a great job, but I just wonder how they can ignore the quality control and the terrible after sale service. It's absolutely an amazing camera, when it works. Of course that doesn't mean that won't change, so we can wait and see how it's going, if they did really the progress on quality control, I will buy one, if they didn't, it's still not an option for me
