  • @Kgenlloud
    @Kgenlloud Před 5 lety +98

    Feels like you exposed for what looked good on the BMPCC and then matched those settings with the GH5. I have so many issues with your tests. 1. Skin tones. You Shot two different angles. Why? This would skew your results. You got more shadow on the side angle which created depth where your head on shot is pretty flat. Also you used 2 different lenses on each camera. Different glass will have different colour shifts. Ever hear about Chromatic aberration? Not to mention all the other things that are affected by the glass you use. For instance F-stop is front element size / aperture size and then rounded off so its common for lenses with different fStops to have different tStops. So in the future use the same lens on each camera. Next you grade something and say it has to much magenta in it. That's just retarded. On your dynamic range test the exposure is not the same. And I agree the BMPCC has better Dynamic range. I just cant tell you how much through your tests because the GH5 image was exposed hotter then the BMCC

    • @henriquemontalvao6809

      Not Bias. I'm not saying the BMPCC 4K is not the better camera. But I want a fair comparison so that I know by how large a margin the BMPCC 4K beats the GH5.

    • @Kgenlloud
      @Kgenlloud Před 5 lety +3

      Side note. If the GH5 image is close its still the better camera. I have a BMCC4K and the 4K is possibly better then that of the GH5 but the hdd space and post (trans-coding) required to use the DNG sequences which is the only option to film in when shooting 4K makes the BMCC's 4K pretty unusable for the projects I do. Unless you filming a feature the DNG sequences are a shit way to work. Even my red R3D files are more user friendly. They are read by premier and davinci natively. Bonzology what experience do you have with cameras? I want an unbiased test so that I can see it the extra work required by the BMPCC4K is worth the effort for the bump in image quality. Also the work flow had no mention in the video. The only bias here is "the slanted lens's" bias to the BMPCC4K. I'm pissed that they wasted 24minutes of my life making this bullshit review when I'm trying to make a decision on upgrading (if you can call it an upgrade) my GH5 and GH5s for BMPCC's. Bonzology look at CRFTSHO GH5 vs Red. Please tell me they got the best results they could from the GH5. My footage looks better then theirs. Here is a link czcams.com/video/8bQbk9zhGQc/video.html

      @@Kgenlloud I currently have a 12 core CPU, 32 gigs of ram, and a 1070 GPU. Is there any codecs that these specs would have a hard time handling on the BMPCC4k?

    • @Kgenlloud
      @Kgenlloud Před 5 lety

      Should be fine. Your specs will handle 4K DNG's no problem. SSD's or a raid will also improve 4K performance. I used to use a Laptop with good specs but a mechanical HDD and that wouldn't handle. If I opened task manager the HDD would be 100% usage. I use a desktop now with 3x 2TB SSD Hybrid drives in Raid 980TI 32GB Ram and an I7 7th gen and that handles everything fairly well. Nuke compositing at 4K doesn't play back but editing and AE, No problems.

    You should compare a GH5S since it shares the same Pocket 4K sensor, not a two year old camera. Even if people think GH5 and GH5S are exactly the same, they are wrong. They are two different cameras with two different sensors, field of view, native iso and color science.

    Once again, what you are seeing is improperly graded V-LogL being compared to a stylistic (aka color science) pre-computed interpretation of the raw footage.

  • @geraldundone
    @geraldundone Před 5 lety +15

    Interesting video. One of the possible causes of the colour shift and disparity between the two models at 120p is probably the bit-depth. Variable frame rate modes on the GH5 are only available for 8-bit, which is a considerable step down from 10-bit and even more from Raw. And 8-bit just isn't that great for V-Log in my opinion.

Like a red camera.. change the iso and exposure losslessly. Bought this and Sony a7iii and returned the Sony. The footage from the Sony was plagued with garbage compression and 8 bit banding. I imagine the same compression issues exists in some heavily graded gh5 footage. 12bit BRAW is amazing. BM Also comes with full version of resolve.

When comparing these cameras when operating with good light, you can't really tell them apart. In the dark, obviously the Gh5 is going to suffer and that is why we have the GH5s. Should you drop the GH5 for the Blackmagic; it depends. If you don't have a camera it's an opinion but the Blackmagic has some major issues to consider. Andrew Ryan GH5 ans GH5s will always have this cellphone-ish quality to the picture, feels kind of shooting on very good phone with optics. BMPC gives you something else, the picture is just deeper, you just want to look at it more, it’s... idk, more cinematic? One looks like filmed theater performance, other one looks like movie. And yes, even iphone shot can be colored in DaVinci without much of an effort to look kind of like movie, but you have to go extreme with it. Bmpc on the other hand can give you “movie” in more subtle way. Just my 2 eyes opinion, not to sound absolute or anything. Just something I’ve noticed

    Also native iso has a lot of misconceptions generally. It’s not primarily about noise levels, it’s the dynamic range. 400 and 3200 have the same dynamic range, but not same noise levels. The second 3200 gain circuit kicks in at 1200+ iso.

    Misconception about the dual iso. It does make for better low light performance, but it improves much more on dynamic range and colors at high ISO's, than it prevents noise. That is why there is more noise in 3200 than 1600, however you preserve dynamic range and color, compared to a normal sensor type.

      Precisely correct. The RAW interpretation is based on carefully designed 'color science' whereas the LOG footage is intended to be graded and corrected in post. You would be better off comparing the Standard or Natural picture profiles instead if you want to make a camera color interpretation comparison. Or at least grade the LOG footage to match the profile you choose for that RAW interpretation.
      I love the colors and the look Blackmagic has developed, don't get me wrong... and I do feel it is superior to the baked in looks offered by Panasonic. Especially in the skintones.
      But this is an apples to oranges comparison.
      You can either go through more trouble grading to get your colors where you want them on the GH5 (or) Go through more trouble with the ergonomic and data storage challenges presented by the BMPCC 4K. Choose your poison.

    For the window test, shoot the bmpcc 4k at iso 1000, you’ll thank yourself. You’ll get more of the highlight information.
    They state that 3200 is the native iso because it’s just the iso with no gain applied. However the iso effects how the dynamic range is allocated. Higher iso in the first iso gain bracket has more stops above middle grey. The lower iso in the second bracket (1250) has the most stops below middle grey and will record more stops below middle grey. 400 and 3200 are just a middle ground where it’s roughly the same amount of stops below and above middle grey. 1250 for low light will not only give you more shadow details but also the cleanest image possible.

      @@TheSlantedLens If I have bright highlights with shadows I shoot at iso 1000 and I ETTR then in post I bring the iso down to somewhere between 400-800 to bring the noise down (there isn't any while its bright). I do however notice that theres a slight difference in saturation at higher iso's though. Generally speaking for exteriors I'm either 800-1000. 400 for controlled scenes unless it's clipping then I up the iso. 1250 for lowlight if possible. You can also look at the waveform in Davinci Resolve with a BRAW clip. The waveform is between 0 and 1023. When recording at an iso you can see where the highlights are clipping recorded information (even if the shot isn't overexposed or clipped) 400 will show a "shelf" in the middle of the waveform. 800 will show a "shelf" at the 896 and the 1000 will have highlight information all the way to the top of the waveform. Again this isn't overexposing clipping, but its how the sensor records the data and Dynamic Range. People think that just because you can change the iso in post that it doesn't effect how the sensor records that dynamic range and how iso effects the allocation of the dynamic range. But I see the proof myself and theres a lot of people who refuse to test it for themselves and just argue with me lol. It's a known fact and can be seen in the dynamic range chart online. Its helpful to know how to use the camera in certain situations. But hey if other people can record at 400 iso without clipping the highlights or shadows then be my guest. All I'm saying is the proof is in the pudding.

  • @rizzo-films
    @rizzo-films Před 5 lety

    It might seem like a small thing, but both cameras were mounted in two different positions that were just far enough apart that the GH5 has some sun actually peaking out into the sensor that the BMPCC4K does not have, which is just far enough to the right that the sun is blocked. I would try to avoid shooting with direct sunlight into the lens as often as possible so its not really a fair comparison, if the camera that wins in these tests is the one where the sun is actually blocked. Also, the white column in the GH5 image actually is not in the BMPCC4K image, you can see in the GH5 that it is out of frame in the BMPCC4K. In fact, in the test where you are pushing the ISO, the exposure in the GH5 actually looks better. At 12:49 there is more detail in the background on the GH5. FYI I'm not a GH5 purist, I don't own either camera. Overall, great demo!

    What handles are those for the Tilta Gravity G2 you used with the BMPC 4K?

    I have a BMPCC4K, and I love it, but one REALLY annoying 'feature' is that you cannot delete files from the camera! So if you are running low on card space, you cannot delete unwanted takes - you have to put the card in a computer and delete. BMD needs to fix this!!

    That was a great Comparison. Thanks very, very much.
    I think you made it very clear that the BMPC4k has a better Dynamic Range than the GH5. Some other factors which you discussed favor the GH5, but the one that's best for you really depends on your needs such as the the difference in battery life between the two cameras. If you are shooting documentary work, you will be far better off with the GH5, or some sort of external super battery for the GMPC4k.
    What was not mentioned is that the BMPC4k includes the full DaVinci Color Grading/Editing software and that it costs less than the GH5.

      Thanks for watching, Dan! And yes, that is a great point about DaVinci being included! That's a benefit we should have mentioned.

    Great video. I’d love to see a comparison between the Blackmagic and the Sony A7 III. Those are the 2 I’m really stuck between. I’ve played with the GH5 and GH5s before and I wasn’t impressed. I don’t like that flat skin tone look.

    you didnt talk about audio options (how the pocket camera has an XLR port) or battery life

    Earlier GH5 did soot 4K with 10bit color only in 24, or 30FPS, but 4K/60P only with 8bit color depth. I'v read some time ago, that at some point GH5 gonna get a software update which allows to shoot 4K also in 60FPS with 10bit color depth?? I'm planing to buy 4K video camera in the near future, and right at the moment i'm considering between Panasonic GH5, and Back Magic Poket Cinema Camara 4K, and i'v understood that BMPCC 4K shoots 4K/60 with 10bit color depth. In this price tag, Panasonic GH5, and BMPCC 4K are quite in same level with the specs, except BMPCC 4K does not have build in image stabilizer and not continues autofocus while shooting. But i think it would be important to get 4K footage with full specs 60P/HDR, and burn the stuff on 4K Blu-Ray.

    Been watching a LOT of BMPCC4K vids on CZcams. It seems the only salty comments come from people with a GH5. Seriously. Did every GH5 owner in the world suddenly get buyer's remorse or something? The BMPCC4K is the best deal for a CINEMA camera on the market, period. Not a DSLR that has video, not a camcorder, not an action cam. CINEMA camera. $1300 for a cinema camera and a full copy of Resolve is ridiculously cheap. I can add a gimbal, multiple batteries, and cards to shoot on and still come in under the price of other cinema cams. Blows my mind.
