- Remember BeReal? Back in 2022, BeReal took the world by storm as the anti-social media platform. Instead of encouraging filters and edited photos, BeReal encouraged users to take off-the-cuff pictures of their lives. While this was a novel concept though, the reality was that not many people actually cared about sharing their normal lives. It wasn’t until some TikTokers figured out how to make it into a viral trend that BeReal really started to gain some momentum. But, as soon as that TikTok trend started fading away, so did BeReal. In fact, interest in BeReal is down 82% from its peak and it doesn’t look like interest will be recovering anytime soon. To make things worse, BeReal currently has no way to monetize users at all, meaning that they’re completely dependent on VC funding. This video explains the rise and fall of BeReal and why the anti-social media platform is having a hard time sticking around.

Shows that the vast majority of people can tell what is right or even virtue signal, but cannot back up their words. We are just animals in denial - that we are mostly governed by our instincts and use logic to justify the feelings.

BeReal was ALWAYS destined for failure. The entire model for any social media app is more screen time on the platform equals more ads shown to customers. Simple as that. BeReal was doing the complete opposite of that. Also, over 90 percent of social media users are lurkers. They never post anything, just scroll through the content. On BeReal you couldn't do that so the app literally cut its target audience by 90 percent right there. The founder probably already knew all of that, but that juicy VC money is too enticing to let facts like this getting in the way.

i think the whole random notification backfired, because since downloading bereal, people were having their phones on them every moment of the day to make sure they dont miss the notification, which often was buggy and didnt make a sound or didnt appear. it put so much pressure on you, to always have your phone with you. thats why i started disliking it.

Yes!! And notifications would come on at 5 in the morning and it was always so stressful to receive that message when I wake up lol
I've since uninstalled it and I don't go onto my phone as often as one should!!
The real problem with BeReal (No pun intended) was the forced interaction with the app.
The app would notify the user everyday to take a picture and show what they were doing in RL.
A lot of people, me included, hated that.

i find myself using bereal the only one using it 'properly' by posting me on my own wasting my 20s lonely at my desk everyday but everyone else flexing their lives 0,0 so i stopped posting
That was indeed the way it was supposed to be used. But people can’t tolerate reality. So they just flex.
I honestly think ALL social media platforms are dying. The fun-aspect of it is dead. It used to be whimsical and silly. Then it became corporate and heavily advertised, making it way too serious for what it was intended to be. It has been ages since I've opened any of my socials. It doesn't even show my actual friends anymore, just some random advertised shit.

The biggest problem with BeReal is that it’s not very fun bc ppls’ lives generally look the same from week to week. People also started posting the same reaction pics to everything just to make sure they’d reacted to all of their friends and some ppl would just take photos of the dark or blank walls or objects. It devolved into performative liking and the same old content.
I use BeReal on a daily basis and I can say for definite people don't talk about it as much

I’m always very surprised to hear bereal is falling off. Most ppl I know irl that ever used it still do pretty regularly, but online I can see that its general popularity/reputation and usage is way worse. Super interested to see how apps like bereal or lapse will do in the next few years
same! its become just a cool way to occasionally see into my friend’s lives. in the long term social media scene, definitely was destined to fall off, but for what the app was actually made for, it was near perfect
BeReal wasn't for social media addicts. It was for a quick update of your social circle's days, to share each other's experiences. The problem? Almost everyone is an addict, and this was like the bar cutting off an alcoholic after 3 drinks.

be real was fun while it lasted, tho it gives a good signal to the market, that people really want new social companies to exist and bring something new, social is back baby....

@@vijaz5559 this argument could be made when Instagram launched, everyone thought its just a fad and people will return to facebook and it didn’t happen, once in a while people really get fed of existing format of social, and seek something new with every other generation, and these old companies will lose them to the new gen socials that are trying something new for these new gen people, and sometimes it works, just like instagram stories

Exactly! its an overblown statement that people „dont want real“ The thing is BeReal just sounds empty. I post videos that I have fun editing onto instagram, like little music videos. I take photos of stuff I actually find interesting and want to show my friends, I post my work(I make 3d models) and make videos that are edited to actually try and get across whats going on to my friends that dont have insider knowledge and I look for similar content to get inspiration or learn new techniques. And of course i also enjoy watching the same from my friends, seeing what they are up to and having an actual concise insight into the big things happening in their lives(not just a random photo) When I hear about Bereal I just see a neat feature that I would like IG to have, but none of the things I actually enjoy seeing or using.

Regular Social media is so overwhelming to me so something simple like bereal is perfeeeeeect ! I love that it also has a “stop” to the scrolling, it’s not infinite like with the other apps.. I do wish they brought discovery back but with more local ppl

I think it’s ridiculous to say that the fall of bereal was because people were fake. People who don’t like social media apps don’t use it. I’ve been off social media for over a year now because why would I join a social media platform if I don’t want to use one? All bereal was going to end up attracting anyway was people who want to be on social and people who like to take pictures.
i think bereal should have focused into an app for meeting new people near you. just add a way to see only people near you in the discovery section, and a way to talk to them and/or comment their photos. in the same feed you could add local ads and you also have monetization.
This certainly sounds good too, but I think it's still worth considering more reliable options like copy trading platforms such as Eledator, for example.
I use BeReal as my diary, but some days I forget and it just never reminds me. I'd use it more if it actually sent notifications. Idk why this feature is buggy when it's the main point, to remind me at a random moment during the day, but it just doesn't. I have to remember to check the app if I should post, and I just forget 😅
Here in Germany I still use it daily with a lot of my friends, just like snapchat. Could just be that they are dying in the US, but here in Europe it's a completely different story. I believe, that BeReal will stay around for longer.

BeReal was something I found during 2022. I posted very little that year and regretted it at the end of the year when I saw my friends’ memories of 2022 wrapped into a video. this inspired me to post constantly in 2023 so i would not miss out. i started slacking around october and would only post a few times a week. the yearly recap video came out, i was satisfied, but not satisfied enough to do it again for an entire year. the only personal advantage i see now is the memories for nostalgia factor later in life.
BeReal should lean into their name and encourage influencers to create mini reality shows that can be chopped up into 5 minute clips. While I hate IRL content, it could be a pathway to monetization.

I also feel like it’s fallen off in popularity because people simply don’t want to post every day. Personally I prefer to consume content than actually post about myself!
I still use bereal but I only have like 3 friends that also use it. I like it's low maintenance style, but I can understand why it dropped in relevance. Pretty much the entirety of 2023, BeReal could not cope with the number of people using the app so it would hang up and crash constantly therefore not allowing you to actually post your BeReal on time thus defeating the purpose. I'm assuming for most users, that was enough of a good sign as any to bail.

Still using it, its the only fun social media. I love seeing my freinds loafing around same as me. Few days ago I had a conversation with a freind I had not seen for a year but we have each others be real and ist felt a bit like he wass with me the past year all along because we knew what each other was up to in their dayliy life, not the instagram poser shit.
for me, i used bereal between october 2022 and around january 2024, aka this year. the reason i stopped using it was from the pressure to post on time and my perfectionism. i accidentally missed one day in september and it killed the motivation i had to post daily. by december i was rarely posting, but mainly due to the app not loading at all when the bereal notification came through, or the app not saving the bereal i took that it initially showed that i posted. these bugs and general issues with the app drove me to eventually delete it in january as i was no longer using the app at all, it had becamme a chore to post, instead of being a fun little addition to my day

I know many people that use social media platforms like Instagram to look at other peoples profiles and aren't interested in sharing their lives to the world. I can see how those people (majority of social media users?) wouldn't like BeReal.
I do still use bereal everyday, I think it's kinda fun. I don't really use any other social media, like snapchat or Instagram, so it's basically the only place where I post selfies. I do like having it for keeping up a photo log and just seeing what my friends are up to.

I use BeReal for memories now, I don’t really care about other peoples posts and I highly doubt they care too much about mine. I think the app itself is neat, but I hate all these updates making it more complicated. I hate that everyone can seen my streak, which is 400 days and it’s a bit embarrassing. I hate the real people and real brands updates. The only updates I have liked as someone personally using it for memories is the multiple be reals a day and Bts.
Summary of the video: It boomed because of a tiktok trend, then it phased out... No actual reason is given in the video, it was probably just loss of interest.

I feel like it was a lack of ability to dm people and accounts that aren’t just people you know (ie. meme accounts) that made people eventually get bored with it.

i also hate that they made it available for people to post at any time it loses the whole being real point because you can just choose the best time of the day to post instead of only having a few selected minutes i think it wouldve been better for the app to have 5 mins of posting time 3 times a day or something along those lines, doesnt gurantee success but it fits the app more

I never even heard of BeReal. Then again I hate social media in general. Tried Facebook when it came out for like a week and got bored of it. Technically CZcams and Reddit are social media, but I don't really consider them to in how I use them. I only comment on CZcams and I stopped using Reddit after the API changes. I saw reddit more of a forum aggregator tbh.

I take a pic on be real every day still, but i don't look at anyone else's (except at some best friends and my mom)... I just like to have a diary of my life i guess. So as a social media... it's kind of pointless. But as a fun app to see your life at a glance with a side of being able to share that/see others as you want to... I guess it works. But unfortunately that's not what it was made to be lol.
Big takeaway here has to be how dumb VCs can be with their money. Any investor should have a least a passable understanding of the market they are putting their capital into; how did they not see these pretty obvious shortcomings in the app's business model right from the start?
The issue with BeReal is 90% of people would always post late and wait to show people what interesting things they had going on later in the day, rather than just posting on time. Making the app less authentic. As someone said in the comments, BeReal is like telling politicians to be honest 😂
BeReal (the original app) was a flawless idea. People just arent real enough. Even i stopped being real when the notification came at 9am when im slugglish
I still use it but mostly because it kinda became routine. Honestly I should just delete it. For me, its just really boring since I only have like 2 acquaintances who use it anymore and my bereals are always either at home or at work. The few times i have something interesting going on, BeReal doesn't come at the right time or I forget to save it for later and use it when it comes at a boring moment

I really like BeReal. It helps me keep in touch with my friends and what is going on with their regular lives. Wouldn’t mind the monetization ideas as long as they keep the app going
I liked Be Real. I never used it because i don't like that type of social media (the only social media i use is CZcams), buy i admired how it pushed for each post to be, well, real. But it sits in this weird position where people who really care about online mental health just don't use social media, and people who don't care as much would get bored of be real after some time. The true "anti social-network" is just no social network at all.
2:50 that's crazy, considering there are apps to make money of downloading random shitty apps. BeReal could just have been one of those apps and it wouldn't have cost them so much to increase their number of downloads.
