  • Eurowings Airbus A319 visual approach and landing on runway 34 at Corfu / Kerkyra Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport, CFU / LGKR. Cockpit, pilots and sidestick view. With cockpit and ATIS (automatic terminal information service) audio. Captain is pilot flying and first officer pilot monitoring. ATC (air traffic control) callsign is Eurowings 3ZV (Eurowings Tree Zulu Victor). Produced with 4 cameras in 4k quality.
    The final approach to runway 34 is over water and the threshold is surrounded by water on all 3 edges. So the landings in Corfu are a little bit like landings on an aircraft carrier.

    Great addition to your series. I liked hearing the planning for the landing, first with the two of you in the cockpit, and then with ATC. With aircraft needinig to back-track on the runway before takeoff, it must get very difficult at busy times. Nice smooth landing, btw!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před rokem +2

      Thanks for the good feedback. You are correct. The space at the airport is very limited. But ATC is doing a great job in coordinating the inbound and outbound traffic. As pilots, we have to make sure to follow exactly their orders like plan your visual approach with a landing not prior to xxxx .... If it does not work out at the end, we still would be able to discontinue the approach and go around.. But this is something, we really do not want to do.

    You get high gain pilots and low gain pilots on the stick. It doesn't matter which you are as you end up in the same place. Nice video.

      This is a really good description. Some make more or larger inputs. Other do a little less. The only thing which counts is the result: flying laterally and vertically on the correct track..

      Vielen Dank fürs gute Feedback! Abflüge sind - insbesondere was den Blick nach außen geht - meist relativ langweilig, weil wir mit hoher Steigrate Höhe gewinnen. Trotzdem werde ich den Vorschlag gerne aufgreifen und zukünftig mal den einen oder anderen interessanten Abflug veröffentlichen.

    Stunning views. You guys are simply amazing and highly qualified pilots. As an avid fan of flight simulation for years, could you tell me which procedure did you follow? Was it an standard VOR approach or an RNAV? As this runway has an offset of 5 degrees or so, and has a non-precision approach procedure according to the charts, how do you manage to keep the aircraft aligned with the axis of the runway? For a safe descend and in order to avoid a hard landing, do you happen to keep a descent rate of 600 fpm or less once you've crossed the runway's threshold ?. Thanks beforehand and keep up the good job!!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 11 měsíci +3

      Thanks for watching and the good feedback! As the description says, it was a visual approach. For the visual approach, we fly a visual pattern and main navigation is in accordance to outside references. Additional help for us is the distance from the threshold which we monitor and crosscheck versus our altitude. Also the PAPI which is located at the runway gives us a good vertical guidance. Additional help for the lateral guidance is a line which we draw with the radial fix info function from the runway along the backcourse of the runway track. The vertical speed is based on the groundspeed. A good formula is GS *5 or GS half. We have to keep the vertical speed until we start the flare. This depends on the aircraft variant and the weight. A good number is 30 feet radio altitude. We cross the threshold on a 3 degree descent at a about 50 feet. So the flare starts shortly after crossing the threshold.

    Out of curiosity, do you need to speak German to be a pilot in your company ?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      Thank you very much for the good feedback! I cannot speak for the company. But as far as I know, English is for sure required and if you are based in Germany some kind of German language skills too. Details can be found in the appropriate job ads.

    Korfu hat echt einen wunderschönen Anflug. Ich war im Herbst 2012 einmal dort im Urlaub. Habe den Flughafen allerdings etwas anders in Erinnerung. Damals haben die Maschinen seitwärts geparkt und dann glaube ich bis zu drei nebeneinander. Wisst ihr wann das geändert wurde?

    I have been to Corfu, many times. And I still wonder. Why do they call the runway, "Runway 34". There is only one runway at all. Why not "Runway 1" ?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před rokem

      Thanks for watching and your comment. The runways are not numbered, like 1, 2, 3 .... They are named by the value you see on the compass when you are with the plane on the runway, pointing with the nose to the end of the runway. Runway 34 means that the compass shows something at about 340 degrees when on the runway. If an airport has a runway 1, it would show 10 degrees. If there are parallel runways, they would we named as 34L and 34R (for left and right). An if there would be a third runway, it would be 34C for center.
