Great ranking. I totally agree that Soundgarden and AIC are the bands from the Seattle grunge scene that should receive the most recognition. They are both much better bands than the rest of the pack.
Agree, although I do however think some bands just resonates with you for some reason or other, it's not necessarily one being better than the other. To me the thing with Soundgarden is their quirkiness and mojo they ooze of, which probably connects more on a non conscious level. Just the intro to Rusty cage alone...
Okay…I was 21 in 1991, so ate up all these grunge bands like biscuits and gravy. But my favorite was always Soundgarden. Before I knew who they were one Friday in 1989 I was offered a ticket to see a certain crappy band that night…or another band the following Friday. The band playing the following Friday was Soundgarden and I took the ticket for the crappy band instead. Later I learned there were 12 people at that Soundgarden show. I still kick myself today. Here’s my list….with my favorite song from every album… 1. Badmotorfinger- Searching With My Good Eye Closed 2. Superunknown- Fell on Black Days/Just Like Suicide [tie] 3. Down on the Upside- Tighter & Tighter 4. Screaming Life/Fopp (I’ll combine the two Eps since that’s how it was sold on CD in the 90’s)- Fopp 5. King Animal- Non-State Actor 6. Louder Than Love- Big Dumb Sex 7. Ultramega OK- All your Lies And here are some B-Sides and soundtrack cuts that are great: -Birth Ritual (From the Singles soundtrack) -Cold Bitch (B-side to Spoonman) -Touch Me (B-side to Rusty Cage) -Stray Cat Blues (Rolling Stones cover and a B-side to Rusty Cage) -Karaoke (Was part of a Launch CD Rom magazine in 1996) -Live to Rise (From the Avengers soundtrack) -Bleed Together (Previously unreleased track from A-Sides) -Black Rain (Previously unreleased track from the Badmotorfinger recordings) -She Likes Surprises (From the Songs from the Superunknown EP)
Started listening to Soundgarden and Alice in Chains again about two years ago. They to me are the two grunge era bands that conserved, music wise, the best.
Love Soundgarden and AIC. Also love Melvins, big influence on Grunge although I wouldn't class them a Grunge band per say. Houdini is a good starting place to get into them.
Oh man, finally a band that I've heard the entire catalogue of. Can't wait to see the difference in our ranking of these! • Ultramega OK (1988) worst • Louder Than Love (1989) • King Animal (2012) • Down on the Upside (1996) • Superunknown (1994) • Badmotorfinger (1991) best Hey, I'm surprised at how close our ranking is! We usually don't agree on what's good and what's not. :)
Bought Badmotorfinger one day in 91 because I loved the cover and so took a chance it might be cool. Never heard of mother love bone or soundgarden til then...been glad I did that ever since. Room a thousand years Wide baby👍
I absolutely have to go back and listen again. I did the exact same thing you did. And Bad Motor Finger was the head turner for me. I will have to listen again and rediscover the love for Soundgarden
1) Badmotorfinger 2) Louder Than Love (my introduction to the band, soft spot in my heart) 3) Superunknown 4) Ultramega OK 5) Down On The Upside 6) King Animal
Pete.. really enjoying your channel and making my way though the back catalog.. I agree on a lot of what you said about Soundgarden and mostly on the grunge stuff... I am curious if you have any thoughts on Mother Love Bone or The Screaming Trees both of which seem like they might have been more to your interest... also King's X and Galactic Cowboys are bands that seem like they would be in your wheelhouse that are a bridge between 80s Metal and Grunge and were tied up in the history of that early 90s period... I have yet to hear you mention either... thanks,
Colin Searle Right on brother. I think those albums in particular were so fresh and innovative when they came out. Ahead of their time and so heavy. Greetings from Finland!
Slaves and Bulldozers was the first song i ever heard from these guys! Badmotorfinger still my favorite album from these guys. So many favorite songs!! 4th of July, pretty noose, Like suicide, beyond the wheel! Great band, timeless material. And i do believe Chris was murdered. I'll have to get some Soundgarden on vinyl. Grew up listening to these guys and don't revisit their music nearly enough. Great Show Mr. Pardo. I'm grateful to have found your channel. Watching SOT videos all the dam time!
Thumbs up, dude! Glad you like some grunge, albeit the best of the lot. Soundgarden was a great band. Didn't even know they got back together for another studio release. Thanks.
Soundgarden, song for song made the best heavy rock music ever!!! Freakin incredible band. I cant get down with Nirvana or (especially) Pearl Jam either.
I was in college at the University of Washington and would see and talk to a couple of these guys around campus at parties and at local live shows back when Chris Cornell was their drummer. Who would of thought they’d become so famous or we never even had a word o grunge. It was just some people we knew and would go to their shows (Soungarden, Green River to Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone to Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees and many more and etc all. Very fond memories for me
I have the Badmotorfinger with SOMMS EP that was released here in Australia as a bonus. They cover Into the Void on it, so it's pretty clear that Sabbath were indeed influences. Great band. RIP.
Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Green River are definitely my favourite bands from the whole ‘grunge’ scene. Here’s my personal ranking of the albums: 1. Badmotorfinger (my favourite grunge album) 2. Louder Than Love 3. Superunknown 4. Down On The Upside 5. Ultramega OK 6. King Animal (some great material here, but not quite as good as the classics in my opinion) Here’s my top 10 Soundgarden songs also: 1. Beyond The Wheel (Early Version) 2. Jesus Christ Pose 3. Slaves & Bulldozers 4. Mailman 5. Gun 6. Entering 7. Get On The Snake 8. 4th Of July 9. I Awake 10. Outshined
Glad i found this one, big fan. For years, I would go back and forth between Badmotorfinger and Superunknown. But these days, Badmotorfinger is where it's at.
Soundgarden and Alice in Chains are the only two bands that I listen to from the nineties. They were my favorite then...and are still my favorite today. I got to see Soundgarden in 1996....one of the best shows I've seen. They played 90 straight minutes and didn't stop! Insane show!!!
Same here.. I was in high school when the whole grunge era came on strong.. Hated it then and mostly shrugged it off for decades until recently I started listening to AIC again and was just really blown away how good they were back in the 90s.. Facelift is a awesome album!! Yeah Soundgarden, STP, super great bands back then. Still not a fan of Nirvana though and never will be
I don't know if you've listened to any post Layne Staley Alice in Chains, but their last three records are killer. Check out Acid Bubble, Phantom Limb, Stone, Check My Brain, Last Of My Kind, The One You Know, So Far Under, Fly, I could go on and on. Soundgarden and Alice are my favorite from that era as well.
Same here. I still remember driving to Ann Arbor to buy Louder Than Love on the day it came out. And then smoking pot and listening to it and that spacey guitar breakdown in "Ugly Truth" just splitting my head open
Louder Than Love for me. Will never forget the tour, with Faith No More and Voivod also on the bill and touring what I consider their best albums. An eclectic triple bill, for sure, but Soundgarden absolutely blew me away. Their entire catalog is impressive, but no release compares to Louder Than Love.
Got into them with the Louder than Love album. I liked it because it was pretty heavy, but thought they could get better.Boy did they.Badmotorfinger and Superunknown really were what I thought they could be and more.Chris really grew to be one of the best singers in rock by then. Also, liked much of Down on the Upside. Those 4 are my go to albums.Saw them on Bad Motorfinger tour and wish that I had seen them again before Chris died.
Down on the upside really great arrangements not just a grunge noise which is why they failed live - couldn't reproduce the musical quality of the studio . One of the Best Albums of the 90s . Amazing texture contrasts as subtle as Jazz . Really the first and last Album of Metal Jazz .
I believe it was Rolling Stone magazine who said that "Bad Motorfinger" was the best Black Sabbath album that year, in a year that Black Sabbath also released an album.
U have heard mother love bone, temple of the dog and mad season? Great ROCK! In the day I never heard the term grunge. It was just Seattle Sound.love your channel.
Nirvana are definitely more punk influenced, while SG and AIC have more classic rock and metal influences which is the reason why having all-encompasing media-created labels can be damaging. I'm so glad I discovered these two bands after neglecting them for some time due to them being "grunge", immediately became one of my faves.
Not trying to be a dick but even if you don’t like Nirvana not understanding the hype is like the most revisionist thing I’ve ever heard it’s very easy to understand why they blew up
@@davidjackson9680 I'm a child of that era. I didn't really care for them back then either. There were a handful of songs I thought were ok. But just didn't get why everyone around me loved them . Btw, you aren't a dick. Opinions are a good thing.
Never got on with Louder than love. Guess I should try it again. However, Bad Motor Finger was killer, Superunknown was slightly more polished killer, and Down on the upside had some classics.
Badmotorfinger blew me away on its release, and it’s still a juggernaut of heavy music. Chris Cornell’s vocals are extraordinary - what can be said about a singer with such power and intensity? This is the only Soundgarden album I listen to these days. It still sounds fresh - it was never a typical product of the Seattle scene, which is why it retains a timeless appeal.
THIRTY YEAR SOUNDGARDEN FAN, Check out BadMotor Vision and Loudest Love on CZcams...aligns with Loud Love and BadMotorFinger performed live....so grateful I saw them BOTH performed live. CHRIS was a real performer, and a comedian!
That whole scene did get rid of the popular 80's rubbish. Soundgarden however stood above them all. Chris Cornell for me is the greatest musical loss since Bon Scott.
Here's my list: 1. Badmotorfinger 2. Louder Than Love 3. Down on the Upside 4. Superunknown 5. Ultramega OK 6. King Animal Like you, I think all of these are great records--it's a disservice to label KA the 'worst'. DotU and SU could be interchangeable; both are a few tracks too long, and I have issues with the production of both--DotU sounds muffled, and SU is really shiny. Badmotorfinger felt just right! I would also rank the Screaming Life/Fopp comp probably at 3.5. Very sentimental connection to that one! I was happy to see SOMMS (Satan Oscillate My Metallic Sonatas) get its own proper vinyl release. I thought the reissue of Badmotorfimger on vinyl, which took up three sides, had room for the EP as the fourth, but the etching is pretty nifty I guess!
Good, evening! Yeah can yoI maybe do a favorite hawkwind top 50 lps rundown or songs? But good luck as,there's 80 Or so out their lol, I guess just lps no comps or best pgs woUlf be easier..
After writing below I just had to recommend Mother Love Bone to you. Listen to this song with the late great Andrew Wood on vocals czcams.com/video/mRDO30RJpBY/video.html. Of course the whole album is amazing but this is my favorite. The band was a transition between Green River and Pearl Jam and would have been on the brink of stardom but Andrew died right after the recoding. Then Chris Cornell (Andrew’s best friend) wrote something songs and got together with some of these guys and recorded Temple of the Dog. I’ll have to say I love Nirvana. I was probably at the first live playing of Smells Like Teen Spirit at the old Squid Row Tavern on Capitol Hill in Seattle. Some good friends were musicians at the time and it was a memorable seen at a time when very few popular bands would come to Seattle and there was time for the germination of the “Seattle sound” without interference. It probably originated in the 60’s with local N.W bands like the “Sonics” the “Wailers” and the “Ventures” to Name a few of the more popular bands. I’m enjoy your posts. Keep up the thoughtful work.
Id swap around your first 2 and last 2 for me but not easy on this one.no mention of screaming life ep? I remember waiting for superunknown and it was everything I expected and more great memories 🤘🏻👍🏻
My favorites (only 4) 1) Badmotorfinger 2) Louder Than Love 3) Superunknown 4) Down on the Upside These are the only four albums I've listened completely. My number 1 is obvious choice for me. Number 2 and 3 are quite close to each others.
A friend gave me a cassette to listen to. Badmotorfinger. Robert Plant has joined Black Sabbath!!! Fucking Perfect!!!!! I was ready for this in '75. Gotta get all their stuff now!
Every few months i'll rotate between thinking any of the first 4 releases were the best, so hard to choose lol. But gun to my head Badmotorfinger probably takes it, especially if you consider how crazy their 91/92 shows were
I got to hear Soundgarden already 1989 (I was living in Soviet Estonia), the Louder Than Love stuff and it was MASSIVELY impressive. Nobody used term grunge, they were called "super heavy rock". Their best album IMHO.
Hi Pete, Soundgarden was great, no question! But what do you think about Stone Temple Pilots? Their second album "Purple" is clearly the strongest album from that era, in my opinion.
I really love all their records besides FOPP which is just ok in my opinion. I have no desire to listen to it again.. I would rank them 6. Ultramega Ok (Love the record but still not as good) 5. Louder Than Love 4. King Animal 3. Down on the Upside 2. Badmotorfinger 1. Superunknown
Off topic, For me, I've always considered the grunge as a scene not as a genre or sub-genre. Because if you look at Nirvana, it's kind of pop songs with a punk attitude. Alice In Chains, more heavy metal influence and there's no punk influence, there's even a touch of glam metal in there. Pearl Jam, a hard rock band, with a lot of influence from American folk, and little influence from punk ... etc. So, as I believe, there's no genre of music as grunge, but it was a scene that broke out in the late 80's, early 90's in Seattle, where bands were friends with each other and the audience, and were living almost the same life style, with a variety of musical influences.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Thanks Pete, good to know! Just getting into the band ( don't think they were ever that big in the U.K. although obviously known about through the Joe Walsh connection). My band has just started to cover one of the Bolin era tunes 'Must Be Love'.
@Scott Leoski ha ha! I honestly don't know how Pete has the time to do all he does do! We certainly appreciate it though and wait with baited breath! 😉
You didn't mention a single song off of Down On The Upside. It has 4 of their best songs, Pretty Noose, Ty Cobb, Blow Up The Outside World, and Burden in My Hand.

Badmotorfinger is a masterpiece. The only thing missing from it is the Single’s soundtrack song “Birth Ritual”…
it’s awesome seeing a CZcamsr I love enjoying another CZcamsr I love, super super awesome. Like those clips of Dave Ghrol watching soundgarden live 😂😂
Chris Cornell (R.I.P) - Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog and as a soloartist!

So glad I found your channel! Do Alice in Chains next please!!!

Jesus Christ Pose was a mind-blower for me in college. Have been in love with Soundgarden ever since.

It's a remarkably underrated album I think.

Mother Love Bone could have bigger than all of them. Andrew was transcendant. Great voice, stage presence and a great song writer.
Id swap around your first 2 and last 2 for me but not easy on this one.no mention of screaming life ep? I remember waiting for superunknown and it was everything I expected and more great memories 🤘🏻👍🏻
He mentioned the Screaming Life/Fopp EP at the start.
My favorites (only 4)
1) Badmotorfinger
2) Louder Than Love
3) Superunknown
4) Down on the Upside
These are the only four albums I've listened completely. My number 1 is obvious choice for me. Number 2 and 3 are quite close to each others.
Hello Pete could you do a ranking the studio albums of Alice in Chains. Thank you.
A friend gave me a cassette to listen to. Badmotorfinger. Robert Plant has joined Black Sabbath!!! Fucking Perfect!!!!! I was ready for this in '75. Gotta get all their stuff now!
Next rank: Alice in Chains
Every few months i'll rotate between thinking any of the first 4 releases were the best, so hard to choose lol. But gun to my head Badmotorfinger probably takes it, especially if you consider how crazy their 91/92 shows were
I got to hear Soundgarden already 1989 (I was living in Soviet Estonia), the Louder Than Love stuff and it was MASSIVELY impressive. Nobody used term grunge, they were called "super heavy rock". Their best album IMHO.
I agree --- Louder Than Love is the best.
I played soccer with Layne.
My older brothers and sisters used to hang with Rail and Heart, years later Queensryche.
Wait what???! What grade lol?
1.) Superunknown
2.) Badmoterfinger
3.) Louder Than Love
5.) Down On The Upside
6.) King Animal
7.) Ultramega Ok
My favorite soundgarden song is uncovered
Screaming Life and Dayview show great bands aren't instantly created, they grow with time and experience. Superunknown a perfect rockalbum.
My exact order
Hi Pete, Soundgarden was great, no question! But what do you think about Stone Temple Pilots? Their second album "Purple" is clearly the strongest album from that era, in my opinion.
Not much of a fan...
pullin' no punches...
Core is better than Purple for sure.
I really love all their records besides FOPP which is just ok in my opinion. I have no desire to listen to it again.. I would rank them
6. Ultramega Ok (Love the record but still not as good)
5. Louder Than Love
4. King Animal
3. Down on the Upside
2. Badmotorfinger
1. Superunknown
How about doing top ten songs EVER ? Of course, that would be a really, REALLY hard one to do but.....GO FOR IT !
oooohhh...that's a challenge!
I know right ?
Spoon man is a masterpiece 🤘
Please do *Pantera & Down* worst to best albums
1. Badmotorfinger
2. Superunknown
3. Louder Than Love
4. Down on the Upside
5. King Animal
6. Ultramega OK
Badmotorfinger and Dirt are 2 of the best rock/metal albums of the 90s. Rest In Peace to the gods Chris and Layne
1 Badmotorfinger
2 Superunknown
3 King Animal
4 Louder Than Love
5 Down On The Upside
6 Ultramega OK
My Sister's Machine was another very good heavy sounding Seattle band.
I would be interested in doing reviews, but I don't think that I write very well.
Can you rank audioslave?
Outshined was one of those WTF? moments for me.
Soundgarden by far the best of the Seattle grunge bands. Chris was a phenomenal talent.
Off topic,
For me, I've always considered the grunge as a scene not as a genre or sub-genre.
No mention recently of the proposed James Gang top ten Pete? Guessing it's a case of your collaborator getting the time?
It's coming! Dan Brown has some other pressing things happening but we will get it done soon!
1. Superunknown
2. Badmotorfinger
3. Louder Than Love
4. Down On The Upside
5. King Animal
6. Ultramegaok
You didn't mention a single song off of Down On The Upside. It has 4 of their best songs, Pretty Noose, Ty Cobb, Blow Up The Outside World, and Burden in My Hand.
Well, I don't have the history with that album as I do the others, so I spent more time with the others. We can't all like these the same after all.
Great! Chris Cornell is one of the greatest Rock singers ever, along with Plant, Gillan, McCartney, Mercury, Coverdale, ecc...
Je ne suis pas fan de Soundgarden mais Badmotorfinger est un excellent album.🤘
1) Badmotorfinger
2) Superunknown
3) Ultramega OK
4) Louder Than Love
5) Down on the Upside
6) King Animal
I actually got superunknown before badmotorfinger and I agree infact I think bmf is one of the best albums ever.
Shoot, here I was thinking you disliked punk/ grunge/abrasive music entirely. Love that you gave Chris and the boys some love.
