  • @julianhignell8452

Okay love the Lizzy passion guys, but I differ quite a bit. Maybe because what got me into Lizzy was Philip Lynott, his words and imagery they invoke are indelibly I printed on me. You cannot explain the effect he had on me when I first heard that voice and saw the charisma that just poured out of him. He was a star! So as the years have gone by the softer more poetic side of the man has come to the fore. As you can imagine those early albums rate higher with me nowadays. Here goes
Thunder & Lightning - I played this to death when it first came out and got to see them on the final tour. Now though; apart from The Sun Goes Down, I cannot listen to this album without feeling sad, sad it was their last and that the songs just don’t stack up against any other Lizzy album. To me it doesn’t sound like Lizzy at all...Sorry!
Chinatown - I like a lot of this and as with all their albums I played them to death, however there is too much filler on this for me.
Renegade - saw them on this tour as well, love the title track and also Fats is a top tune, but again not as strong as it could’ve been, shows sign of fatigue and the production is not great.
Thin Lizzy - This is where it gets tough, I love the imagery here, but it does sound like a debut, a little unsure of direction. But here is where Phil the poet starts to shine
Shades of a Blue Orphanage - again like the first album a little unsure of itself but getting better I think
Nightlife - lots to love here, Gary Moore’s solo on Still In Love With You is very classy, and the songwriting goes up a notch.
Johnny the Fox - love most of this but the last track lets the side down, Boogie Woogie Dance is one of the worst filler tracks of all time.
Black Rose - this was the album in the summer of ‘79, however as much as I love it, 2 tracks let it down, Sarah and S&M, not good! With Love and the title track hark back to those early days but with more swagger.
Jailbreak - iconic album, put them on the map and I love every track
Fighting - its an album I go back to time and again, wonderful songwriting but not quite as good as the next one...
Bad Reputation - I think this where Philip’s songwriting really peaked, every song is a winner.
Vagabonds of the Western World - for me this is just a classic Lynott album, so poetic, romantic but with substance. Eric Bell’s playing is superb too. Absolutely love this album.
They will always be my go to band and I love all the albums...apart from T&L, if I had to pick a favourite era it would be those early years when Phil was learning his songwriting. For me he was a poet first, just wish he had continued in that way. RIP

Nightlife, that album kick started the whole twin lead moment for Thin Lizzy. Plus at that time they were very smooth and soulful with some very good guitar work, a combination we won't see again until Bad Reputation and Black Rose

I loved hearing your reactions and reviews here. Im Irish, and Thin Lizzy are revered and respected so much here. Theres a classic statue of Phillo himself proudly outside a major rock bar in Dublin that attracts admirers from everywhere. Every rock bar play Lizzy all the time still and anyone into rock music here is proud of theem. I tink Thunder and Lightning is my favourite - The sun goes Down is a wonderful song. I remember seeing Metallica in Dublin , in 1999. The "Garage Inc" tour. The whole place was roaring for "Whisky" inbetween ever song! Ill never forget Metallica sitting down on the drum riser- nearing the gigs end. The chants for "Whisky" could have taken the roof off, and Hetfield stood up, addressed the crowd and told us that one of his favorite performers was "from this area". The whole place went utterly nuts. Then, just before they finally launched into Whiskey- Eric Bell arrived on stage, and rocked out the song with them. You can hear that performance on youtube , well worth a listen! Go raibh maith agat (thank you) for this video!

While listening to this episode, I had to pause and go listen to the audio streams of certain songs that you all talked about. I always knew that Thin Lizzy had something special about them but did not personally put the time in to research. Now I admit...I am a big big fan of theirs. Friggan Heavy, Classic, Folk, just Badass band. Love it Sea of Tranquility! There are so many Thin Lizzy songs that could be future Space Force and Sci Fi battle scenes productions. Amazing music from somewhat an under appreciated band compared to the mainstream that is going sour these days for sure.

    • @MajasDad
      @MajasDad Před 5 lety

@@grimtraveller7923 Well, Tony Visconti is an amazing genius, and if he said that, it definitely must be true :) Whether technically live or not (you can't deny huge chunks of the tracks and the general feel are live), the album is a masterpiece. And the fact that these passionate dudes barely mentioned Live and Dangerous (but they did indeed mention it, in all fairness) MUST have to do with it not normally being listed as a studio album. But then again, total respect for their choices, and everyone's entitled to their opinion. Cheers!
