I will always have massive respect for Elize and Alissa for stepping up in Denver. That took a lot of guts. Ironic that Elize had actually auditioned for the role when Anette got the job.

Floor was well received by the fans because she had been singing in the metal genre for as long as Nigthwish, with her symphonic metal bands, After Forever & ReVamp, and was already viewed as one of the best singer around.

"The band calls the shots in Nightwish." Now you know why Tarja quit/was fired. She could not live with that. The band was actually quite understanding with Anette and there was never a "Bye Bye Beautiful" or a "Master Passion Greed" songs for the end of the Anette era. That speaks volumes. I came on board the Nightwish train with Anette and I've noted that the band has never disrespected her. They were unhappy that they couldn't make it work, but they never crapped on her. Something to keep in mind.

Ohhh this one hits home. I was at that show with my 2 daughters in Denver. I remember this like it was yesterday from the time we arrived. We went to a special restaurant before the show and found a place in the balcony for our first Nightwish show. It was our first time hearing Kamelot, who instantly became a favorite (we later went to Within Temptation and Amaranthe seeing Elize again). When Troy and Tuomas came out my heart sank as I knew something was wrong and feared the show would cancel. Then, as you said, the band let the fans decide which I NEVER thought would happen. During one of the songs, the ladies got off on a verse to which the band handled it like champs. Stopped the song, helped them get back on track, the fans were amazing supporting them and they restarted crushing it. There is so much more I could say about this experience but what started out feeling like a major let down for us has turned into an once in a life time experience cementing Nightwish, Kamelot, Amaranthe and Alissa (in her many projects) in our family's hearts forever. #neverbethesame

The narrator on the video is Esko Valtaoja. A retired professor of space science in the University of Turku, Finland and a former boss of the Tuorla observatory. He is also an author and populariser of science. Esko is a warm, positive and a funny man who looks at life with a humorous twinkle in his eyes. He has tried to explain the mysteries of space, time and life so that we others could understand them. Tuomas Holopainen read his books, contacted him and they became friends. He asked Esko to join to this video. Esko Valtaoja told somewhere: "When I was a little boy, I was wondering whether I would become a big Indian chief, space pilot, or an astronomer. The last one sounded exciting even though I didn't know what an astronomer did. What I really wanted when I would grow up, was to become "The Warlord of Mars." Reference to the scifi books by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

One thing to keep in mind about Floor. At this point, she had spent over a decade singing with After Forever…a band who had previously toured Europe opening for Nightwish….and another few years fronting her own band reVamp. She was no amateur when she took over vocals on that 2012 tour…she was already an old pro. Also of note…when the band’s original singer Tarja left in 2005, Floor was a fan favorite to be her replacement, so when she finally DID join the band, it should surprise no one that she was accepted so enthusiastically.

Great reaction! Glad you are taking the time to get into the history of this great band. If you are so inclined, there is another essential documentary for Nightwish fans (much shorter) that focuses on Floor and starts out with a reunion of her Rock Academy fellow students. The interviewer then does a special feature on Floor and the Tampere 2015 concert, which features Floor's parents (who were at the concert) and the struggles Floor went through prior to Nightwish. It is very emotional and gives great insight into Floor's personality and what a sweetheart she really is: czcams.com/video/B3NIfu0qvtg/video.html

The original intent of this documentary was to just to document the whole tour. But the unforseen events with the vocalist change turned the focus in another direction. You still get the documentary from the beginning, but the singer change is what made them start off at the point they did, then go back to the beginning.

This incident is referred to as the "Denver Debacle". It may be the bravest thing for a singer to do. To walk out on stage without previous rehearsals and intimate understanding of the songs and perform. They must have been nervous as hell. definitely best to split this up. It is a long documentary. Well done Daniel.

Daniel: By the way, here is how much this "debaucle" actually matters: Only a couple of years ago, Elize Ryd, now Amaranthe, was on tour with Sabaton -- and because of that 2012 Denver show, Elize has made it a point to learn the songs of bands she tours with.
As a result, Amaranthe made and released a cover of Sabaton's song 82nd All The Way, a song about the most decorated US soldier in World War I, Sgt. Alvin York. And if I recall correctly, right before COVID shut everything down, Amaranthe actually performed 82nd All The Way onstage with Joakim and the boys of Sabaton!
By the way, check out both Sabaton and Amaranthe -- I think you'd like both bands. One is a mix of metal, electronica, and has three vocalists (Amaranthe), while the other sings about military history (Sabaton).
Edit: Daniel, "waxing nostalgic" is basically thinking about the past, and having fond memories of the past. Some in life take it too far, and want the "good ol' days, when things were simpler." However, as you've pointed out, Nightwish embraces change, and doesn't really dwell on the past, as we all should. So the question that's asked of Marko actually reinforces what you stated about change. And from what I've seen is that the band, Nightwish, accepts the past for what it is, and why, and how, the past molded them into the people they are now. And they understand that the past is a part of them, inherently, which is why it's better to embrace the past and take from it what you can, than let it keep you from living in the present, and the future. Because it is inherently true, and self-evidently so, that whether we like it or not, time is always moving forward. At some point, we all face the end of "our decades in the sun," and go back to the sleep we were once in, before we woke up as newborns. Even Tuomas, Marko, even Floor will one day embrace death. The point is, what kind of life will you have led? What kind of things and perhaps even lessons and teachings have you left for others? What about a family? It is these things that each of us must answer, but only when we don't let the past control our present and future are we clear-minded enough to actually not let the past influence us. While it is okay to look at the past and think about what the past means, and to even treasure the good things about the past, we must be cautious to not let the past keep us from living our lives now, and into the future. Because one day, the future becomes the present, and the present becomes the past. And at the end of life, everything about you will become part of the past, no matter how much you either run from it, or embrace it. Which is why it is better to live in the present, rather than the past -- so that you can enjoy your life as you live it.
And with Nightwish, it isn't just the individual musicians' lives, but the life of the band, and the past of the band, that must be remembered, but not so much it prevents the present band from enjoying what it is the present band is doing.
It is why, for instance, while I wish Jukka, the drummer, to come back and play, more than likely, he won't, because he doesn't want to put his health and life at risk, knowing what I know about his condition of insomnia. Better he does what he can for the band, despite not actually performing, than to not be able to be a part of anything the band does.

Tuomas and Tarja had performed in school music projects. Tarja had, I would say typical young girls voice, nothing special yet. Couple of years later Tuomas started assembling the band. The original idea was to make atmospheric music, but there was an unexpected thing what changed everything. This is from their book:
    ------
In 1996, Tarja was on her Christmas holiday in Kitee. "I had spent the semester in the church music department of the Sibelius Academy in Kuopio. It was a really cold day in Kitee. Tuomas rang our doorbell, I remember him wearing a green parka and combat boots. He modestly told me he wanted to talk to me about something. He had brought a couple of cassettes with him and asked me if I could maybe listen to them. The music turned out to be really beautiful."
Tuomas remembers that Tarja immediately agreed to join the band. Having no clear idea on the vocal melodies, Tuomas basically gave Tarja the task to figure them out herself. "There were three songs on the demo, and one of them was called 'Nightwish'", Tarja recalls. "Tuomas gave me the lyrics and backing tracks and said that he had a certain melody in mind, but I was welcome to come up with my own interpretation."
At the time, the goals were not set too high. "The whole thing was supposed to be just an experiment - we'd record a demo and maybe sent it out to some record companies", Tuomas says. "There were no plans whatsoever to play gigs or to aim towards anything more serious. Tarja figured it would take maybe two days for her to sing the songs in the studio."
"Tuomas called me and said that we have a vocalist", engineer Tero Kinnunen recalls. "I remember the Saturday morning we sat there waiting for her. A car pulled up to the yard, and out came a woman wearing a fur coat. I thought it was some granny in her thirties, but then I saw her face and noticed that it definitely wasn't the case. I believe Tarja was 17 or 18 at the time. The Huvikeskus studio in Kitee wasn't anything like it is today. The control room was in the theater, so we set up a mic there and started recording."
Tarja went through the vocal melodies with the boys, and when the time came for her to start singing, the guys' jaws dropped to the floor. "It was such a shock for us when she first started to sing", Tuomas thinks back with awe. "I thought we were going to hear a clear, young, beautiful, girly voice in the style of Kari Rueslåtten or something - instead, Tarja had a high-pitched, bombastic voice that was already very dramatic and classical. She surprised us completely."
    -------------------
Very quickly the boys realized that Tarja's singing style is so dramatic and bombastic that the music must be that too. They started doing what can call as "operatic power metal". Tuomas, Emppu and Jukka were big fans of metal music, so the change was easy. It would certainly have happened anyway, but Tarja's singing style sped it up.

I am into metal for many many years and saw all the big bands live (and less known awesome bands)
But Nightwish...it's not only a concert, it's group of tight friends who make your evening feel like magic. Floor always says "mijn broers" my brothers.
Anette was in my opinion a mistake. I saw NW live in Serbia during a huge festival and I could not listen to my band. I really cried because I did not recognize the music anymore, she made it poppy and her voice...is live just terrible. That is why they only made musicvideo's with studio recordings with Anette. And during Covid because Humane Nature was released jyst when covid started.
The guys are humble, funny, intelligent and awesome musicians.
Floor had a HUGE burn out for a year, she never could deal with After Forever falling apart.
So like they already said...nNW and Floor saved eachother. She still has a lot of contact with Marco and podcasts with him.
Secretly I hope he will come back one day.

I don't know why they didn't have Marko be the main singer in Denver. You know he knows all the lyrics. Maybe that's what they did in Salt Lake. BTW, the decision to go with Floor instead of continue with Anette was basically because they also found out Anette was pregnant and they would have had to cancel the South American and Asian parts of the tour because Anette couldn't fly if she was months pregnant. And for Floor, this was the first time back on stage after more than a year with burnout or nervous breakdown.

I do like this doc, but its very much from the bands perspective. Anette feels somewhat differently about it. She was basically fired while sick and pregnant. She REALLY objected to her temporary replacement being Floor because she knew how good and versatile floor was. She didnt leave the band, she was fired. Its known Tuomas wanted Floor for a long time, and it does feel like Anette knew this, and he got his excuse to do it.
The majority of people do prefer Floor, we all know that, but Anette gave them their most commercially successful era, the bands best selling albums and singles are with her, and even on CZcams the most viewed videos are of her songs, not the Wachen 2013 show.

They just didn't want to say it out loud that Anette tried to make a power play against Tuomas.
"Anette gave them their most commercially successful era" - 'Anette gave them' sounds so funny. Dark Passion Play album was almost completely finished when she joined the band. Once is still their best selling album and i believe "Over the Hills and Far Away" is their best selling single.

@@chrism2964 Slightly got in the state of Awe while reading the OG comment about "Anette's troubles" back in the days when all these events and incidents took in place as being shown on the documentary....( Wooottehell?)
Hasen't she got a given chance to participate in the documentary and there for speak out her mind to the whole wörld from her own perspective what happened at the time???
      - Yes, she would've got her fair chance if just having had enough balls to make things clear. Atleast from her own point of view what really happened and the way she experienced her sickness, beginning of the pregnancy, being removed from the line-up of the band, etc. etc.
Why didn't she came out loud and clean? Publicly for example, and spoke out in what kind of agreement they ended up with other members and management team after the announcement she's been "kicked out of the band with an Excuse* made by Tuomas???" - *Referring to Floor's status as soon-to-be replacement singer onto her place.
Yet Ms. Olzon had to checked into the hospital as instructed by the doctor and there was no more talking of that mysterious " Excuse"
"An excuse" to get your favorite singer in the band by scheming a former singer out???
Soon to be Ex singer who's done excellent job on the recorded albums to make them commercially and even financially successful...
Makes ZERO sense, from any point of view...
And as we all know the albums and the songs of this band are ALL made for the concept called Nightwish!!!
No song is made for any particular vocalist....In practic Marko Hietala has sung vast majority of the vocal melodies in pre-productions/album rehearsals on the demo tracks since early 2000's.
Just like on : "The Poet and The Pendulum" early Demo Version.
Soooo... That's about that who has done, what and when and why for the sake of whom....🙈

There are several performances where Floor was as, or more, sick and she medicated and continued on. Sometimes, you can tell, but Floor at 90% is still as good as any vocalist in the world. Annette……. was not.
