    If you wish to purchase these products, you have to have an established Facebook account and join their group. Because of recent messages I've received from individuals trying to join the group and simply getting banned, and because of the unorthodox method by which they have you purchase these products through Facebook, I can no longer in good conscience, recommend them.
    I have personally been banned from their group, as well, for being publicly critical of their ordering process. I did this in the hopes that they would create a website, streamline their purchasing process, and make these awesome items accessible to everyone. This hobby is supposed to be fun and enjoyable for everyone around the world.
    I will not promote a product or products that are only accessible to a tiny group of select individuals.

    Imagine being a passenger towards the end of the sinking and watching a six story building collapsing onto the deck. Gives more perspective on how big Titanic was.

    If the real _Titanic_ had had those rhinestones on its funnels, the iceberg would have seen the ship easily and would have avoided the collision.

    Hello from SoCal, in LA. For some reason I've become a Titanic Fanatic. I have TWO Academy 1/400 kits (eBay finds) AND am now subscribed to the Eaglemoss' 1/250 AND the Agora partsworks 1/200. Besides having a TON of R/C model airplane kits. And two closets full of Star Trek kits. So, yeah...hope I live for another few years ......

    I would like to thank you for that recommended paint for the funnels. I’m fairly new to modeling, but I’ve always wanted to build a *good* Titanic model. None of my previous ones turned out well, because I got impatient and rushed them. I was also just a kid. Several years later though, I wanted to try again. So I started off pretty simple with the Revell 1:600 scale model. I wanted the colors to be accurate, so I purchased the color you suggested, and it was absolutely spot on! In the end, the model turned out pretty good. It’s definitely not perfect, but it’s a huge step up for my previous models, as I really took my time, and put a lot of work into it.

    Hi Ben, The debate about the White Star Buff is very useful. No contemporary colour pictures as you say but there are colour pictures of the SS Nomadic White Star tender currently in Belfast. Its buff is almost identical to your choice, depending on the light in the photographs. Of course any determined enthusiasts might be able to write to the museum for a colour recipe. I will go with Mission Models thanks to your review.

    Have the 1/400 version of the Model Monkey funnels and they look really lovely. Used a hot blade to take off the tree without any piping or the bottom of the funnel chipping off. I'm looking to getting their 1/200 versions and they're the only one who sale a version of the funnels without the piping and you can add the piping parts that come with the Trumpeter set. Those are versions I'm picking up. You should get a set at least to review and compare with the China 3d versions.

    Lol, nora's funnel reminds me of rupaul drag race lmao.
    After these reviews of china 3d I've changed my mind ordering them. I'll stick with the kit parts and the woody works. For me it works and no danger of destroying the sets like the 3d printed ones, and the colors I'll just stick with black and peach color for the funnels.

  • @corrioliseffect

    Nobody quote me on this as being fact, but I do recall from my TRMA readings 20ish years ago that “White Star buff” was the result of Harland and Wolf being forced to experiment with numerous different paint formulas until they could find something which would not boil and peel due to funnel heat. The final formula that worked and produced the WSB color we all wish we could see was one which involved egg yolks as one of the paint ingredients. This is said to be how a stable, non-peeling formula was established. Can anyone confirm or debunk this? ~Cheers.

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  Před rokem +1

      I can neither confirm nor deny this. BUT, if true, one could make paint just like they used to and experiment with a hot steam pipe and see what color the paint ends up being! And that would be REALLY helpful!

    Unfortunately for me, I had to mix my own. I chose a darker more tanner version of your funnel colour, and I think it looks excellent mainly because it eerily matches with the 1997 Titanic movie's WSB. Even if the colours are varied within the spectrum, we will always be satisfied with whatever colour we pick.

    I'm way behind the curve here as this video is now 10 months old. I have 3 questions. Would you recommend annealing the Pontos kit funnel wraps to make gluing them down easier? Did you use Epoxy or CA glue? And did you find it to be an issue (orientation of the wraps, adding the other PE or plastic parts) to the Pontos wraps when you file off that short horizontal ridge just below the ring line for attaching the funnel rigging? That slot is present on Woody's wraps but not on the Pontos. Great video as always. Thanks for your help

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  Před rokem

      I used CA glue and didn’t have any problems wrapping the PE around the funnels. On one of them, the wrap was a little “short” so I just sanded the funnel down and little on all sides until it fit nicely.

    Hi Ben! Awesome work. I love the videos and they have helped me tremendously. I do have a question regarding the mission model paints. I bought alot of their paint for a project since we can't get model masters anymore but I have had a really hard time with the paint not adhering to the plastic, primed or not. Any suggestions? I'm trying to find a replacement for model masters and this was one of the first brands I tried.

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  Před 2 lety +2

      Hey Daniel, I have switched to Life Color Paints since Model Master went away. But to make the Mission Model Paint to work, I first hit the PE and China print with a Metal Primer. Then I used enamel flat black as my “primer”. The mission model paint soaked into the black. So several coats is required. But it is not coming off. The combination worked nicely.

      Yes the whistle is gold. I just had not painted it yet in this video. It took all week to get those examples together. I realize it would have helped some people even more if each version was “complete” but I just didn’t have the time and resources for that. Besides the fact that a lot of it is redundant.

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  Před 2 lety +1

      I used SMS metal etch primer in this video. It’s airbrush “ready”. It’s not my favorite because you need to let it sit for a few hours, in my experience, for it to work right. This is probably because it is thinned for airbrushing. I use a Mr. Hobby metal etch normally and brush it on. (It’s a lot thicker) and seems to do it’s thing a lot faster.

    With regards to the funnel colors, there are a couple of Autochrome color photos of the RMS MAURETANIA (1907) that were taken in 1928. She's in the floating drydock in Southampton. The OLYMPIC was docked at the Ocean Dock that day and you can see three of her funnels in the background of one of the photos. The White Star color seems to lean more towards beige/tan in the photo, but I would guess that's pretty close to what the color would have looked like in person.
