  • In this video we take two of the superstructure pieces and cut them in half. And then throw away the top part. Thats it, basically. But it's really important for things that are coming down the road.

    The way the superstructure fits onto the hull is a reaaal pain, shame they don't have any slots it can fit in :)

    Hi Ben, now this is what I'm talking about! I have the complete sets of PE, both the hull and the upper superstructure. I am now thinning the hull and opening up the portholes to accept the PE sections. You have come to the same conclusion as I have on this so that is reassuring for me! Thanks for that! My additional complication is that I need to modify the PE sheets to a new window arrangement too as I am modelling the Olympic circa 1930's! Nicely detailed video so good job! 😉👍 (Shapeways Grand Staircase mods coming today)!

    I know you all have gone back to your benches and won't even know I snuck in here, but I liked the sound on this video, with the near constant roar it almost sounded like the H&W ship yards in miniature---OK maybe not but ya gotta adapt as much as ya can 😜.

    Coming along nice. I did recently buy three new 1/700 British battleships. Queen Elizabeth, Warspite, and Barham. And though I don't have the room or money for 1/200 ships, I do enjoy watching builds of them.

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  Před 2 lety +2

      I’ve asked Trumpeter to make a 1/200 scale USS Fletcher. Because then people in your situation would have room for them. Hopefully we will have one in the next year.

      @@TheMidwestModelShop I've been thinking of upgrading my entire collection of model ships from 1/700 to 1/350. For one reason or another, Trumpeter's 1/350 kit of Bismarck is like $250 on Amazon. For that price, I can almost get the 1/200 version.

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  Před 2 lety

      I picked that ship because they built 177 of them, I believe. So there are LOTS of options to build the “one” you want or the one a family member served on.

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  Před 2 lety

      Exactly. And I’m not sure why the 1/350 have gone up so much in price. They have improved the tooling… so maybe that’s it.

    Believe it or not, when I did my 1/350 carrier Ranger, I did it all by hand, as I do all my models. But if I do build larger carriers in the same scale, like Yorktown CV5 and Enterprise CV6, I would get into airbrushing. I don't know anything about it, but I did order Fine Scale Modeler's Airbrushing Models book. Amazon has some nice airbrush kits for under $200. I just don't know which paints to use, or the ratio of paint to thinner.

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  Před 2 lety

      Well as a general rule, for mixing thinner to paint, just make sure it ends up the consistency of skim milk. You’ll be good.

      Yeah. I use that plane and the others they produce A LOT. It’s for serious wood workers or collectors. OR people with more money than they know what to do with. I’ll say this though, they tell you to buy the best tool you can afford. I have never experienced a better block plane at that size. Ever.

    I belong to a model boat club that meets every Sunday morning to sail our models . Someone brought down a model of the Titanic about this length . I can't remember the length of it but it must have been 6 feet or more. The interesting thing was , he complained how bad the steering was , with such a small rudder . I wonder if the full size ship had the same problem ?

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  Před 2 lety

      Supposedly the real ship was pretty responsive for the standards of the day. While some have reasoned this may have contributed towards the accident, we have to remember it was a cruise ship. It was doing full speed and had about 30 seconds to respond. All considered, it did really well.
