Our daughters used to say “she attackled me” which was a portmanteau of “attack” and “tackle.” During the adoption process for our son, we lived in Congo for 3 months. Our son spoke Lingala but started combining it with English. When he was in the high chair at dinner time, he would say “ageeta down.” A Congolese lady explained that “ageeta” meant to get down out of the high chair but it started sounding like a blend with the English phrase “get down.” When I was doing Spanish flash cards with my wife, she asked me for the Spanish word for “to laugh.” I didn’t know so I guessed “hahar” but I maybe it could have been an -er or -ir verb. Maybe “jajar” would have been the correct spelling. Todavía nos reímos de eso.

@@williama.3652 I'd guess they meant “liberal-owned”. No, it’s not correct standard English, and invites people to reject the message on the sticker because they take it to indicate ignorance.

Love your Dad... his spirit is so obviously kind, and you've carried on in his tradition. One malapropism he made me think of was commonly used by one of my friends in the USAF. He was Hispanic, but his English was 99.9% perfect, except when it wasn't. When I would hear him say certain phrases, (we both did a lot of public speaking) I learned to listen for the little oddities, because some were clearly not accidents, he said it that "funny" way every time... Here's one: Instead of saying, "Right off the bat," to begin a topic, he would say, "Right off the back." Now I know I'm not crazy for getting a kick out of that every time! :)
A little boy I know asked his mom “mom do you like reptiles?” And she said “not really, why?” He replied “does that mean you have reptile dysfunction?” Lol apparently the day before she remembers hearing an ad on the radio about “erectile dysfunction,” but obviously he heard it wrong!!! Lol so funny!

I have a good one! My friend always thought that “calzones” (the pizza-like food) was actually “Cowzone” and he was confused because it wasn’t made of beef and I told him it wasn’t “cow” it was “cal” 😂😂

About the "Arm and the Leg". In olden times Artist who painted portraits used to charge by body parts mostly head and chest. If the model wanted more the artist would say " that's going to cost you an arm and a leg"

There are etymological myths like this all over the Internet; fun and interesting but unlikely to be true. (And btw, “olden times“ is perfectly standard for me, only a bit archaic, thus embodying its meaning.)
You'll love this malapropism from a former coworker! We speak Spanish but working in IT we use many English words, one such is 'workaround'. Another coworker needed to write it down and was asking what the correct spelling was. This person said "it's 'walk around,' like instead of getting directly to the issue you walk around it and get to it from another side." LOL she even had an explanation.

Time ago I explained to a 3 yr old why he wasn't allowed to drink from a glass on the countertop. ( no because are breakable).
The next day he explained to his twin brother that he should not use it because those were glasseables !! : D
"Me molesta que me despierten, y más cuando estoy dormida" o "Cosembró lo que sechó" (en vez de "cosechó lo que sembró)" eran frases que decía mi pobre madre después de largas noches de insomnio por su trabajo de enfermera... Por burlarme, cuando me convertí en mamá, empecé a decir cosas como "Ahí fue donde la tuerca porció el rabo" (en vez de "donde la puerca torció el rabo") para decir que algo salió mal.
Una vez mi suegra le aconsejaba a mi cuñado cuando empezó la universidad "ve tomando apuntes", pero lo dijo raro y yo pregunté "¿Quién es Beto?" (¡Qué oso!) Jaja
Una amiga italiana estudiaba español con una maestra española. Una vez, mi amiga empezó a estornudar repetidamente en clase y la maestra le preguntaba "¿Alergía?" y mi compañera entendía ¿Alessia?, pensaba que le preguntaba su nombre y decía "No, Giulia" Y la maestra "¿Alergia" y mi amiga "No, Giulia", "¿Alergia?" , "¡No, Giulia!"
También yo, en clase de inglés, una vez empecé a hablar en español. El maestro acababa de decir que no iba a responder a nadie que hablara en español, por eso, cuando pregunté "¿para cuándo es la tarea?", él empezó a decir "Excuse me?" y yo "qua para cuándo es la tarea" y él (un poco más fuerte y con la mano junto a la oreja) "Excuse me?" y yo "Que para cuándo la tarea" y él no dijo nada pero se me quedo viendo feo y yo grité "QUE PARA CUÁNDO ES LA TAREAAAAA!!!"
Mi hermano pequeño una vez le pidió a mi mamá una tostada de "chinga" en vez de tinga...
Y también puede pasar con los gestos. Una vez estaba en un mercado en Italia comprando fruta. Para conservar orden, todo iba por turnos y al llegar, había que tomar un papelito con un número. Llego, tomo el papelito, llega mi turno y el muchacho, desde entre las frutas me extiende la mano y yo le doy mi otra mano y le digo "Piacere, Sandra" (Mucho gusto, soy Sandra) y él se saca de onda y me dice "Piacere, Giuseppe" y cuando vi que se empezó a carcajear, entendí que me había extendido la mano para pedirme mi papelito con el número del turno, no para saludarme.

Teníamos que escribir una historia en la clase de literatura, yo estaba anotando "el sol salió de nuevo". Todo bien hasta ahí, pero mi amiga creyó que mi "n" era una "h" así que muy sonriente dijo "el sol salió de huevos!" Jajajajajaja 10 años después sigue siendo divertido y hermoso, además tiene total sentido ya que en la lengua vernácula "de huevos" significa genial, muy bien hecho, sorprendentemente placentero ¡El mejor trabajo en equipo de mi adolescencia!
@@leventdhiver "De huevos" sería más como salió porque siempre sale, porque así sucede todos los días. Entonces, tu frase no estaba equivocada. "El sol sale diario de huevos!!!!!" y cuando no salga, es porque ya se acabó el mundo. Así que más vale que siga teniendo huevos!!!!!!!.

Haha this was fun, I smiled and laughed a lot and it is so cool to see your dad so happy and excited about this. It is nice to think about these bloopers as something interesting and beautiful instead of just mistakes.

I enjoyed this video so much!! This is why I love linguists and linguistics. You’re dad’s awesome! My dad and I would have fun conversating (yes, conversating) with him! Also, I wanted to mention, the switching of L and R occurs among speakers of many languages, not just Southeast Asian ones. And sometime, it becomes the standard or at least a common variant in certain varieties. For example, I am a heritage speaker of Louisiana French (it’s my grandparents’ first language, and my dad grew up bilingual, but I learned French as a second language). There are several examples of the interchanging of L and R, but one is the word "galerie" (pronounced «gal’ri») which many people say as "garelie" (pronounced «gar’li»). We also often pronounce the word "prairie" as "plairie." I know stuff like this happens in Spanish too, because I’ve heard it, but I can’t think of any good examples right now. The only one that comes to mind at the moment is how some of my Puerto Rican coworkers pronounce Puerto Rico as "Puelto Lico," but I know there are better examples.
It was dark in the night. We were coming back home when my grandmother (pointing at a cat) said: "mira como le brillan los gatos a ese ojo amarillo" LOL

I confess I sometimes do this. Several years ago, I was visiting a friend in Philly, and came up with a new word: problemsome. I kinda loved it from the start. By some strange coincidence, I was visiting him again a year or two later and said "troublematic". Clearly, the long-lost brother of the previous new word. I have embraced both. You're welcome.
I’m not just welcome, I’m grateful! Problemsome I had picked up in 2014 from a CBS reporter, but troublematic was new. As you note, it is clearly the long-lost brother―you can feel them rush to embrace each other! (I love those reciprocal pairs.)

Ahí está lo atractivo de la lingüística, en gran parte.
Cuando dicen que estudiamos el idioma o idiomas porque no se nos dan las matemáticas (como si fuera la única ciencia respetable) sólo pienso en que JAMÁS han visto de frente un análisis morfosintáctico.
Pero cuando tienes pasión es entretenidísimo 😄.

No conozco todavía la obra de “Gazapos y Gazapitos”, pero buscaré cómo conseguírmela. Según el Internet se publicó en 1985: falta un poco para llegar a los 50 años. Supongo que se podría hacer una obra semejante para México, otra para Argentina o Perú o España. Pero algunos gazapos bien que podrían nacer en cualquier de esos países.

My boyfriend and I used to eat eggs and bacon for breakfast very often. But every morning make the question of "what will we eat this morning?". Once I made a mistake and I said "Beggs and acon". I laughed a lot. Now I always call them Beggs and acon, I love that combination.
Y tengo otra en español. Tenemos un dicho que es "Al que le quede el saco, que se lo ponga" y un día platicando con unos amigos uno de ellos dijo "El que se ponga el saco que se lo quede". Nos reímos mucho y siempre se lo recordamos.

The Spanish version of "to cost an arm and a leg" is "costar un ojo de la cara", literally "to cost an eye of my face". In Argentina we use a more vulgar expression, "me costó un huevo", basically, it cost me a ball (testicule). I sometimes merge them on purpose to make a joke, so it ends up costing me a ball of my face. Lol

I get that "spoonerism" a lot. I flip a lot of words up. Having moved to the USA at age 15 I still think in Spanish but speak English without an accent. People make fun of me though :( idk why my brain does that!!

Here in south Alabama we might say,”the garbage can is full of water, tump it over”. After a friend who now lives out-of-state used it and was ridiculed, we tried to figure it out. It is either an very irregular past tense of tip or a combo of tip and dump
There is an actual word "tump", but it means "carry something by a strap passed over the forehead" (the strap is called "tumpline"). "Tump it over" doesn't make sense.
Yes, I have heard tump, and I think you may well be right about the origin of the word. It is indeed standard in some parts of the South. I agree that it probably has nothing to do with a tump-line.
...or maybe a combination of "turn" and "dump".

My friend Julia always says "lo dijo con rintitín", Alex would always talk about "el descote que lleva sea chica", Ricardo says "sirulo" instead of "Siluro", old people might say "Vesícula Balear" instead of "Vesícula biliar", and many more!

En español es cierto que pasa menos o sucede de manera diferente, por ejemplo una amiga una vez dijo: No me gusta que apachurren a los hamsters porque se les salen los "ajos", entonces supe que los hamsters esconden ajos en su cuerpo...

My husband usually says "fraudulent slip", instead of "Freudian slip".
When it comes to redundancies, many English speakers (at least in the UK) think that the word "sombrero" is the name of a Mexican hat (like Speedy González's). And they often ask me if I own a sombrero hat.
