The name of the band Sixpence None the Richer comes from a book by C. S. The father gladly accepts the gift and he's really happy with it, but he also realizes that he's not any richer for the transaction. C.S. Lewis was comparing that to his belief that God has given him, and us, the gifts that we possess, and to serve him the way we should, we should do it humbly-realizing how we got the gifts in the first place.
The best 90s band name -- and a fantastic band musically, as well -- was Toad the Wet Sprocket. "Good Intentions", "Walk on the Ocean", and "All I Want" are all awesome songs.

This song is perfectly used in the movie "She's All That" (1999).
Also, it's possibly the greatest "sappy" love song of all time. I never get tired of hearing this song and this is one of those magical songs that make you feel something or remember a memory that never existed.
It definitely takes me back to the 90s when I was a kid and everything was good.
It might not be the greatest song ever written, but I never get tired of it. It makes me smile and sometimes that's all I want from a song.
The song has a better effect, with the video of scenes from the movie. The movie was an absolute classic as far as teen / romance movies.

It does remind me of a lovely girl I fell in love with 1,000 years ago when I first laid eyes on her...Joann, she was 17 and I was 19. I'm 70 now. I met her in 1973 and this song was released in the 90s, and yet it reminds me of her sweet soul and kind-hearted ways. Like the song and the singer soft, airy and sweet. Swing, swing!
The song was also included on Dawson's Creek's first soundtrack in April 1999, which is where I know it from.

A sixpence was 2 and a half pence in old money before the UK decimalised in the early 70's. The coin was used and a UK 5 pence looks similar.
I got a sixpence for my pocket money when I was 5 years old in 1975.
I'm a grunge guy 100%. But this is one of my favorites from the 90s. It always hits me in the feels. With that said. If you like that now you should hear their song There She Goes. Another beautiful 90s song. Sung by a beautiful voice.

This reminds me of a perfect 90’s band (maybe for female Friday because the singer) is The Sundays. “Here’s Where The Story Ends” will break your heart, and “Summertime” is a perfect end of Summer song.
I loved the Sundays. I also think of Dubstar and Saint Etienne.

My core group of friends as a teenager were all into nu metal and hard rock, stuff like that. None of us were supposed to like this song, but one day it came on in my buddies car on the radio and it turned out we all knew the words and started singing along lol. It was hilarious realizing we all had secretly liked this song lol
It's so unabashedly wholesome that it sneaks up on you. In an era when trashy music reins supreme, it's almost shocking that we used to have music like this.

Sorry - missed your post. I love their version of "There She Goes" better than the La's version. I'd love to know a bit more about their official video for "There She Goes" - like what the story means (of the little cello player girl) and I absolutely love the artwork behind the band as well.
If they are going to react to There She Goes, it's better to listen to the original by The La's. Otherwise it would be like listening to Mr Tamborine Man but choosing the William Shatner version 🙂
One of the examples of a remake surpassing the original. Maybe not as much as Jimi Hendrix’s “Watchtower” surpasses Bob Dylan’s, or that Aerosmith’s “Come Together” surpasses the Beatles’ classic, but that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it. (Now I’m going to dodge the rotten tomatoes being hurled at me)

I am right with you on those 90's songs, and how they take me back. I would also add "closing time" by semisonic to that list. that was such a time in my young adult life. it was a better time in the world it would seem to me. but then again, I was younger so of course it seemed better. thanks for posting.

Such a beautiful, sweet song. So soft, so romantic. Amber's right. It's like the soundtrack to a perfect, magical, summer evening, and the beginning of a new love story.
This band was hired to be the praise band for my church's youth sleep away camp one week circa like summer of 1999 or 2000. They were so down to earth and cool. They did some really cool acapella beat box type stuff kinda like Pentatonix later would do. They do a great cover of How Soon Is Now iirc as well. I'm so glad you covered them!

Agree completely! It’s a brilliant song in both versions. The first time I heard the Crowded House original version I got such a Beatles feel from it. Went on to become quite a fan of Crowded House.

Leigh Nash (neé Bingham) has the most amazing voice and Matt Slocum on guitar is wonderful. Their album 'This Beautiful Mess' is a masterwork.
There is a Japanese version of this song. The lead singer not only nails the language, but the song itself is so beautiful in that version as well.

I love this band. I first saw them on a Christian music video channel and bought their album and then a few years later I saw them in person doing a tour of Christian book stores with a short acoustic set. One of the songs they did was "Kiss Me" from their then, newest album. As soon as I heard it I thought this had hit written all over it. Sure enough, a few months later it was re-released to a wider audience and then put in a movie and it became as big a hit as I expected. The teaming of musician/songwriter Matt Slocum and singer Leigh Nash has made many wonderful songs but this one just has the best hook of them all. At the bookstore I was able to talk to Leigh and she was as sweet in person as her voice would make you believe. I got to see them a year or so later with the full band at a bigger venue and they put on a fantastic show. I'm so glad you got to this group and hope to see you react to some other Christian bands from the 90s that crossed over into the mainstream as well like Jars of Clay, Switchfoot, and Lifehouse.

I love Sixpence but my favourite song by them (by far) is their cover of the La's song "There She Goes". It's well worse checking out.
The band is from New Braunfels, Texas and broke up in 2004. They were an American Christian alternative rock band. The girl lead singer joined the band, 10,000 Maniacs apparently. This song is the main song in the movie, She's All That.
This song comes from the movie, “She’s All That” and Usher makes one of his first appearances. It’s a Cinderella story of a rich popular teenager who makes a bet with a friend that he can get Laney Boggs to get in enough shape to be invited to the prom by this popular boy. It’s a great movie and you should watch it on Friday. I love this song but there are some other great dance songs in it!

Other 90s bands with female leads (with beguiling voices!) that you should do are The Sundays "Here's Where the Story Ends" and "Summertime" and 10,000 Maniacs "These Are Days" and "Because the Night (unplugged)." (10,000 also did a great version of Roxy Music's "More Than This," which you recently did.)
This song also reminded me of "Hey Jealousy" by the Gin Blossoms, another 90s tune they may enjoy! Not a female lead, but a similar vibe.

I'm somewhat jealous of my older brother for having great songs like this coming out while he was in high school. I was never one to spend much time at school dances, but that might have been different if the playlists were filled with '90s music -- Matchbox 20, Savage Garden, Goo Goo Dolls, etc.

Sixpence also had a completely different (black & white) video for this song - a Paris version - which featured Leigh (singer), Matt (guitarist, lyricist) and Dale (drummer) biking around Paris. Guitarist/songwriter Matt Slocum met Leigh Nash in the early 1990s. They recorded a demo, which circulates as "The Original Demos", with bassist T.J. Behling at Verge Music Works recording studio in Dallas, and eventually an album, The Fatherless and the Widow, for the independent label REX Music in 1993. After adding more members, the band toured in support of The Fatherless and The Widow. The band released This Beautiful Mess in 1995.
In 1997, the group signed to Steve Taylor's label Squint Entertainment and released a self-titled album, which slowly began garnering attention from a wider audience in the mainstream industry.
In 1998, "Kiss Me" was released as a single, propelling Sixpence None the Richer into the national pop spotlight. The next year, the band followed up "Kiss Me" with a cover of The La's' "There She Goes". Sixpence appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and numerous morning talk shows.
The band had a follow-up album ready to release, but their label Squint Entertainment started to fall apart, leaving the band in limbo for several years. Finally, Squint Entertainment folded and that album, Divine Discontent, was released in October 2002.
On February 26, 2004, Matt Slocum announced that the group had disbanded.

So I won't reiterate the name that so many have already commented about apart that it comes from a place of humbly giving what you have to God in terms of talents and gifts because God was the source of your talent or gift in the first place. I started with their debut album back in 1994 called The Fatherless and The Widow which was rather folk, acoustic, coffeehouse type alternative (key song: Trust). Their sound was way different with a more rock and artsy alternative on This Beautiful Mess released in 1995 (fave songs on that album: Love, Salvation & the Fear of Death; Within a Room Somewhere; Disconnect). Many of these would make for some good "female Friday" songs. Kiss Me was one of a couple of big hits on their '97 self-titled album along with a cover of "There She Goes". They had changed record companies from R.E.X. records on the first two to Squint Entertainment, a record label started and run by musician and songwriter Steve Taylor in 1997. Steve Taylor would also be an excellent unusual Christian artist to listen to some songs/albums.
This song might not have had 'a lot' but to me it does have the perfect amount of all the right things: mood, words, vocals, guitar, accordion, playfulness. The balance this song has is what makes it perfect. I love it.

Hey Amber, you asked us to leave a comment about how Sixpence None the Richer got their name. The band actually got their name from a passage in C.S. Lewis's book 'Mere Christianity.' In the book, Lewis writes about a scenario where a poor family gives their last sixpence to a child as a gift, emphasizing the idea of giving generously even when you have little.

The guitarist Matt, I used to know when I was in high school playing in bands, in fact his band Love Coma used to do shows with my band, and other bands I was with…great guy! Had a lot of great times doing shows with his band (Love Coma)…he and their lead singer told me he was putting a band together called Sixpence None The Richer….and they became successful, I was very excited and happy for him.
oh, LOVE this band. they only had a couple songs get a lot of air-play, but some lesser known songs I really like are Angeltread and Within a Room Somewhere. they actually have a darker tone than this song

Its always been a song I liked and I liked the band too. The name of the group, as others have said, came from the writing of CS Lewis, the sixpence representing a small value coin. It was an interesting and much loved small silver coin. The old British currency system was divided into pounds , shillings and pence (the pence, being denoted by a d) So the sixpence was 6d. In 1971 a new decimal currency system, with new coins was introduced with 100 pence in the pound and new pence were denoted by a p instead of the old d. However the sixpence was retained and continued to be used in the new system until about 1980, but its value was 2.5p (£0.025). So the sixpence was 6d or 2.5p. Even although it was worth 2.5p in the new system, everyone continued to call it a "sixpence". I still have a few of them. 🙂

They are from New Braunfels, TX between Austin and San Antonio. I was actually working at the Wal-Mart warehouse in New Braunfels when this song came out. Then 20 years later I saw Leigh Nash solo at a small bar in Knoxville (where I live the past 20 yrs) singing this song and she still sounded fantastic. The young woman bartender, perked up when this song started like she had no idea her bar just hired the lead singer of this song to play there. It was pretty cool to see Nash is such a small venue, then seeing a young bartender suddenly realize who she was watching.

Lewis called Mere Christianity.[5] A little boy asks his father if he can get a sixpence-a very small amount of English currency in use at the time-to go and get a gift for his father. The father gladly accepts the gift and he's really happy with it, but he also realizes that he's not any richer for the transaction. C.S. Lewis was comparing that to his belief that God has given him, and us, the gifts that we possess, and to serve him the way we should, we should do it humbly-realizing how we got the gifts in the first place.”
That type of accordion - my family calls it a concertina, my dad played one and called it a squeezebox. Good memories!

The 90's were the best time for women as singer-songwriters and lead singers in bands!! There's Shirley Manson in Garbage, Tori Amos, Natalie Imbruglia, this band, Verucka Salt, The Breeders, Natalie Merchant, and on and on!!

You commented on the accordion sounding beautiful in this song... One of my favorite songs with accordion is Marc Anthony's song "You Sang To Me". There are multiple versions of the song... The short "radio edit" version had much of the accordion part edited out. The longer versions have more. It comes in towards the end of the song.

Sixpence started as a Christian pop/rock band from Texas before moving to Nashville. This was their breakthrough to a more popular genre. It was a huge hit. Beautiful song, so well put together.
This song has been on "adult contemporary" radio stations since about 8 months after it was released.
Guaranteed there's some workplace with the radio tuned to the only station that comes in clearly and that isn't country music, and the station is playing this song.

As a kid growing up in the 90s I was very lucky to do a lot of travelling to different countries for holidays, and if there was a Planet Hollywood in the area (global restaurant chain similar to Hard Rock Cafe, mostly all gone now) we would always make a point in going.
They always had a playlist of music videos and while there were quite a few songs, the playlist was always the same. There are a few songs that every time I hear it always takes me back to Planet Hollywood in some corner or the world, having an amazing time with my family. This song is one of them.
Off the top of my head I can think of a few more. ‘Lovefool’ by The Cardigans, ‘There She Goes’ by The La’s, ‘Just A Girl’ by No Doubt, ‘Kung Fu Fighting’ by Carl Douglas, and the Ghostbusters theme by Ray Parker Jr. But this song probably evokes the strongest memories.
