  • In this video I replace the laser mechanism in a Marantz CD 63 KI signature edition. This Phillips CDM 12.1 (or later variations of it, known as the CDM 12.2, VAM1201, VAM1202) mechanism was used in many Marantz and Phillips vintage CD players in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. It was even found in a few other makes such as some Technics players also.
Replacing this mechanism is a quick and easy way to fix many problems with your CD player. It’s a very similar process to replace this mechanism in most of these cd players. So If you have already tried cleaning the lens and laser sled rails on yours and it’s still not working correctly, then 9 times out of 10 this will fix your problem!
The replacements can be purchased cheaply off eBay at the link below :

Just replaced the drive and laser on my old Marantz 53 using your video. All working perfectly again thanks to you! Yours was the best 'How to' I found online. Brilliant job. Thanks! 👍

That’s great to hear - thanks! I’m still a complete YT novice and that has made my day! So glad I could help.

I have one problem one of the RCA output connectors on Marantz CD63MKII original SE is not sending the sound signal in the left speaker, when I move the cable's lug up the sound appears in the left speaker, when I released it the sound dissapears, please I need an advice how to repair this since I am not an electronist.

Hi! If you mean coming from the cd player RCA end then it sounds like a dry solder joint around the speaker terminals. Not a big job but if you are not familiar with electronics or you don’t have a soldering iron it maybe something you will need to get help with. Let me know if you need anymore advise

I wouldn’t trash it just yet. Is it the same model as this one or a fairly expensive one? If so it may be worth seeing if you can source a tray from another cheap lesser model on eBay. Many of them share the same tray and if you buy a broken one that’s in a poor state but the tray is okay, you should be able to pick it up really cheap then just swap the tray across. Just an idea!
