  • This video is about two Marantz cd players I got for $20 each because they both don't work. They both display "No Disc" after the disc spins 4 to 6 times. I replaced the whole laser assembly with a new one purchased from Singapore and tried it in both units. The same symptoms still occur. I tried adjusting the (I believe called the trimmer) by turning it both ways little by little and it made no difference. I downloaded the service manual and checked the corresponding resistors with the vaues set in the manual and they all look correct. Any suggestions?

Not sure why these branded cd players suffered from this nasty problem. Philips included.
I have a few of these players that left unused for sometime and ended won't read any disc.
Unlike japanese players that work without any problems.

Hi sorry for the late reply. You may had fixed it. But if not could you check C104 for leaky? If this is leaky, this could prevent the laser coming on. Also could you confirm the laser is on. Don't look direct into it. Use a mirror or some sort.

I sold these units after I got them repaired. Now I have a Yamaha European cd player that displays all of the information. It continuously scrolls all of the information as the sings plays.

Hi There on the new lasers you fitted did you desolder the anti static solder blob on the laser ?. Kind regards

I had a local electronics shop do it. Since then, I've repaired several cd players and always de-solder the static point.

Hi, have you found a root cause of this issue ?

Yes, I took it to an electronics repair shop and both lasers in the units were bad. They replaced them and now they're working again! What's weird is that I purchased which was supposed to be a new laser from Malaysia, but it still didn't work. I took that new laser to the repair shop along with the cd players and they told me that the "new" laser I purchased was bad also. I have the same problem with a Sony boombox radio also and purchased a new laser assembly from an American seller and will be installing it soon. Hopefully the boombox will work because it's a very nice one!

@@beotheguitarist thank you for feedback. I have Marantz CD5600 which sometimes have problem to read records. Yes, laser change usually solve problem. So far do not have time and have new Marantz, but once will have time will try to change capasitors from modul which power laser and do on - just will test if it solve. In past repaired few products this way. However i consider that problem may be also laser:)

@piotr6991 Yes. I just changed the laser in the Sony boombox last night and it worked! Now I know how to do it. I watched a couple of good videos here on CZcams, so I'm good to go.

I had bought an sa8001 that the seller claimed worked but had the same issue. I checked everything and replaced the laser with one bought off ebay and it still didn't work. I wound up returning it which was very saddening to me seince it was my first marantz product and I really liked it. I wonder if the new one I got was also broken too@@beotheguitarist

Why do you need this technology, it’s outdated? Now you can record to an SSD? Don't you feel like you're going back in time?
