  • Welcome to this episode of Menopause Conversations with my guest Chani Schreibhand - the founder of the Jewish Community Magazine - Uplift.
I came across Chani after attending my first meeting with The Health Collective which spurred me on to ask within my own networks - who are these groups who are supporting women. If you are part of a community group supporting Women’s health or are a marginalised community trying to serve health needs of people from deaf, LGBTQ+, blind communities - we want to her from you so use the ink below:

Shockingly, the UK has the widest gender health gap in the G20 as our health system has been designed by men for men. In July 2022, the UK Government tried to tackle this disparity with the launch of the Women’s Health Strategy, which promised to tackle the deeply rooted inequalities in our healthcare system to improve the health and wellbeing of women across the country.
Nowhere is this gender health gap more pronounced than for women from diverse ethnic groups. The 2022 National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) study, which was part funded by Wellbeing of Women, found that women and their babies who are from Black or minority ethnic communities experience worse outcomes during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
Together with our ambassador Dr Nighat Arif, we want to make change. The Health Collective has emerged out of the urgent need to do more to ensure all girls and women receive the best care, regardless of which community they belong to. It is being led by grassroots organisations representing women’s voices from every community in our society - and this where Chani comes in!!
Listen to the empowering personality that is Chani - during a time of grief for her family, she took on the role and responsibility to be a beacon for the women and families in her community. Chani provides a women only safe space for the topics of health and lifestyle amongst other topics to be discussed amongst her Jewish community.
Chani was so generous to share some of the barriers she believes may hider women's health in her community and the topic of 'Modesty' seems to spans many cultures that are here in UK. Chani is resolute - "Modesty must not be a reason to give up on our health". Chani advocates how important it is for us ALL to know our body parts - using the correct medical language so that we can advocate for ourselves and others. We must instill confidence in women to know that they know their bodies better than anyone and most GP's have had less than 1 hour of menopause training during their careers - so we need to do our homework on what midlife and beyond can look and feel like as women.
Chani describe her magazine 'Uplift' and the community she has created as a 'fresh place to open up conversations'. All the writers and illustrators are women and are a global effort. The artistry and imagery is stunning and I cannot wait to get me copy. We talked about a really poignant article looking at 'how women see themselves' and how negative this can be if we aren't kindreds to ourselves. This is such a common experience in midlife and especially during the menopause as we come to terms with our changing bodies and minds.
But if we are to truly break down barriers and stigma for communities of women we must be inclusive. We need to understand the cultural barriers that may exists and work to understand how we can work alongside communities for the betterment of their health.
We draw to a close by Chani sharing her wisdom a Jewish saying that resonates with me: " the mind of women will bring redemption" and its this that says we can instill hope about what is possible when women come together to learn from each other as in the Health Collective.
Chani ends by giving us her 3 hopes for the future of women - all in a spirit of Love and Peace:
    1) Women need to stand up and not be scared
    2) Peace and better health for all women
    3) Women know how to find the information that they need for better health
Chani would love to be able to expand her reach and can only do that with sponsorship - please do get in contact directly with Chani to make this happen. The magazine is about lifestyle and health topics.
