5. The Trouble with Tribbles
4. Space Seed
3. Amok Time
2. The Doomsday Machine
1. The City on the Edge of Forever
I love the original series because of its charm. The characters are also very good like Spock and Kirk.
+JH batman absolutley
OH MY GOD I LOVE HOW FUN THESE TWO ARE!!!!
In A Mirror Darkly had a darker theme (no song) in the opening. Also with Amok Time, Enterprise did a three-parter which included T'Pau in the last season.
1. The Trouble with Tribbles 2. Enterprise Incident 3. Balance of Terror 4. Amok Time 5. Journey to Babel
When I first started watching TOS, I didn't really know much about the characters, but I did know aboit Sulu. He seriously freaked me out as a kid for some reason. I practically went into shock when he was running around shirtless with a sword in that early on episode.
It took me a season to recover... 😊
Ha ha ha ha! I can totally believe that.
Not sure what was most entertaining. Listening to them discuss Star Trek episodes or watching Sean slowly become more annoyed as his sis kept going off on a ramble about a book, or a family trip, or a DS9 episode, LOL :D Oddly 'City on the Edge of Forever' I have never particularly liked even though, as the guys state here, it does tend to come top of many lists when discussing TOS. My top 5 and runners up below:
1. Balance of Terror - I love this episode, possibly the most re-watched one for me, but I love WW2 movies and this had the feel of 'The Enemy Below' or 'Run Silent, Run Deep' so maybe that's it.
2. The Doomsday Machine - Despite apparently not understanding his role as Commodore Matt Decker, William Windom did an amazing job as the Ahab like Commodore willing to die and take the Enterprise with him to revenge himself on the machine that killed his crew.
3. Space Seed - As Sean said, an iconic episode that led to my favourite Trek movie The Wrath of Khan.
4. Mirror Mirror - For obvious reasons really, but seeing the evil versions of our beloved crew was just a hell of a fun ride even if the fact that a military run that way would implode in about a year ... if that, lol.
5. The Devil in the Dark - Life doesn't have to have two arms and two legs and a head, it can be a pulsing, ugly silicon based monster that can move through rock like we move through air. I love this episode for a few reasons, but the one that stands out for me is how Leonard Nimoy managed to make us empathise with the Horta (a creature that had been killing off miners faster than Donald Trump can Tweet) with a mind meld. An amazing performance by Nimoy.
My three runners up are: 'Errand of Mercy' because John Colicos is so much fun chewing the scenery as Kor, lol. 'The Ultimate Computer' as we see other Starfleet ships in a battle, plus see a vulnerable side of Kirk as he thinks he will be replaced by a computer. 'The Trouble with Tribbles' simply for the laugh value of seeing Kirk dress down his men and finally get the truth from Scotty and punish him by restricting him to quarters which means the man can catch up on his technical manuals, LOL;)
Hahahaha
Just imagine if we'd done our top 10 episodes and didn't cut off the rabbit trails........3 hour video!
Before almost every video we do I think I say, "Let's try and keep this one at 10 minutes." And then every video is even longer than the last one.
LOL, I have the same issue. Every time I do a video I swear I'll keep it short, then I just keep on talking about a subject I love and time rolls away from me;) But sometimes it's fun to spend time with hosts you don't mind going a little off topic if you still enjoy them.
Ha ha ha ha ha
I'm like a squirrel on soda, and my brain is like spaghetti, it's all mixed together, and if I pull on one thread it pulls up about ten more ideas.
Errand of Mercy is a great episode, and I almost put it on my super long list, but changed my mind at the last minute.
My wifes the same, her brain works so fast that what comes out of her mouth can be a little confusing, LOL:) But I love your enthusiasm Ticia, always makes me smile.
YAY! My husband says a similar thing.
Mentioning a few of your episodes, I’m surprised you haven’t seen or maybe mentioned Star Trek Continues since it adds to some of your favorite episodes such as Mirror Mirror and other more.
Loved your lists. :) I made a top 14 list which included all of your choices. These are my top 5:
1. The Devil in the Dark
2. The Corbomite Maneauver
3. Mirror Mirror
4. Balance of Terror
5. Amok Time
Devil in the Dark is one of my strongest memories watching Star Trek, but for whatever reason it's not a favorite episode.
I love Peter David as well.
My top 5:
5 Balance of Terror
4 The Man-Trap
3 The Trouble with Tribbles
2 Mirror Mirror
1 The Naked Time
My Favs:
1) Mirror, Mirror
2) The Doomsday Machine
3) The Corbomite Maneuver
4) The Conscience of the King
5) The Trouble with Tribbles
Ooohhh, those are some good ones.
The Doomsday Machine is my favorite
I couldn't agree more, best TOS episode ever, blows "City on the edge of forever" away (so to speak).
I would love a video of your sister's favorite books.
I'll tell her to start finishing up her list!
The Devil In The Dark
A Private Little War
Let That Be Your Last Battlefield
A Piece of the Action
City on the Edge of Forever
I go back and forth on liking "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" and then being vaguely indifferent to it.
I'm Trek but my sister is Dr Who: I envy you guys ;)
+Donny Rocker I think we both missed the Dr who train
yeah, we somehow missed the Dr Who train.
You guys were probably a little young for the Tom Baker years, otherwise you would've climbed aboard. After all, who can resist Jelly Babies?
Tom Baker is *my* Doctor ;)
10. The Trouble With Tribbles
9. Amok Time
8. Arena
7. The Naked Time
6. The Devil in the Dark
5. Journey to Babel
4. Space Seed
3. Where No Man Has Gone Before
2. Mirror, Mirror
1. City on the Edge of Forever
I like all of those episodes.
Sweet! We both have good taste lol.
What did you guys think of that famous fight scene between Kirk and Gorn in Arena episode?
czcams.com/video/4hnBp7x2QAE/video.html
Heres a funny video of Kirk and Gorn recreating that fight scene many years later.
Oh the squire of gothos is the episode where they reference the star ship discover....
Now I must rewatch it to find when that happens, because I have no memory of it.
Definitely would like to hear about the favorite Star Trek novels here. Mine would have to be either "How Much For Just the Planet?" or maybe "Doctor's Orders".
Favorite Episodes of the Original Series, in no particular order:
City on the Edge of Forever
Mirror Mirror
A Piece of the Action
Naked Time
Arena
Honorable mention:
the DS9 episode "Trials and Tribble-ations"
Sounds like we're getting a number of people interested in books. I think we're going to do TNG next week. Then the week after that recap of the show thus far. Then the week after that we'll do DS9 or books . Not sure, but we want to do a bunch.
"How Much For Just the Planet" is one of my favorites too. I'm trying to remember the plot of "Doctor's Orders," I can picture the cover, but not remembering the books.
Deciding favorite episodes for DS9 is going to be HARD!
If I recall correctly, "Doctors Orders" had McCoy commanding the Enterprise after Kirk left him in command to get him to stop complaining. Subsequently, Kirk was time-abducted-not-really-but-kinda on a planet with sentient trees and rocks, and then the Klingons show up, and McCoy trolls the Klingon commander by giving him medical advice.
I just looked upstairs and it is among the books I own. I must now reread it to remind myself. It made the list of books I kept after my initial culling of terrible Star Trek books. There are some truly atrocious.
yeah do a book list
That's a good idea.
A Taste of Armageddon is my favorite TOS episode
If there was no space seed wrath of Khan would never exist
5 menagerie
4 trouble with tribbles
3 amok time
2 space seed
1 city on the edge of forever
I thought about including Menagerie, but there were so many to pick from.
My favorite one is an odd one:
Conscience of the King
I've never met any one else that has this one as their favorite.
+ryjinannon seems everyone’s lists are different.
I did consider putting it on my alternate list because I'm a big Shakespeare fan.
I actually really like The Man Trap.
I know i'm in the minority but i quite like Spock's Brain, i'd probably rank it in about 30th. Weirdly i'm one of the minority who doesn't like City on the Edge of Forever, that would be close to the bottom of my rankings.
OooohKay ! ... Books & City otEoT. I think City got high critical acclaim. I don't know if I always thought it was my favorite. I started at age 6 and like the action and adventure episodes. I cannot believe your sister (and you) did not mention Harlan Ellison the writer of CITY ! I think there is a documentary on him or an interview about how he talks about selling the script to ST. He's a character ! I also think he butted heads with Roddenbury; maybe D.C. Fontana was on his side. BOOKS ! Sure ... talk about them. I read one many years ago that was high adventure and also some quasi -homo- erotic (seriously !) with the close friendship of Kirk and Spock. It was written by 1 or 2 women who may have been famous authors or fan authors -- But it was a Paramount sanctioned ST book. I'm old school, I read most of the James Blish books about the TOS episodes and the animated episode books. I have read mainly TOS books. IMHO the books became so dramatic and trashy and short and expensive (decent size, but bigger typeface and almost 1.5 spacing). Also, after attending Fan Cons(ventions) I met people who read actual, Great SF books .. and started to read "Dune" and "A Mote in God's Eye" and "The Uplift Wars" and a few others.
And if you don't know the writer David Gerrold and his ST episode ... you loose BIG TIME ST points !
At one point I had many of those James Blish books, and that is my primary exposure to the animated series.
I've read a little bit about Harlan Ellison and his take on City and all that, and it's super crazy.
David Gerrold wrote Trouble with Tribbles and the animated sequel with Tribbles, whose name I'm blanking on right now. I don't know if they brought him in for the DS9 Trials and Tribbleations.
1 doomsday machine
2 bread and circus
3 balance of terror
4 specter of the gun
5 requiem for Methuselah
Honorable mention
Enterprise incident
The tholian web
Ultimate computer I mean it would have been easier to list 5 least favorite if there are 5??
Bread and Circus is an amusing one.
please do DS9 top 5 too!
+mdot Artist if enough people watch this we plan to. Though that one will be all her
It'll be so hard to choose because it's much more serialized, and they had so many great recurring characters.
Yah, but that's why I think itd be a great topic! Altho I would say "Trials and Tribble-lations" is surely a candidate for #1
Definitely in the top 5. Though, I'm always a fan of any episode with Weyoun. I always perk up when I see Jeffrey Combs listed in the guest stars.
Agreed! He did such an incredible job with a character that could have easily been a side-note to the female changeling. I guess I just really want the top 5 because DS9 isn't recognized often enough, despite being such a stand-out series.
The cage
That's a good one.
I couldn't give less of a fuck about Star Trek books but if you get your sister to talk about them it would probably such insanity that I'll have to watch it
+Roei Potash AKA Poihpio I’m not sure how to take that but since you’ll watch I’ll take it as a good thing.
Nerd time - Spock smashes the intercom monitor veiwscreen thingy. Mirror Enterprise was just heavy orchestral music, no singing ;)
UFI on WoK - Found this out some time ago, and never noticed from my million views lol - Shats and Richardo are NEVER in the same room during the movie xD
"Brain brain brain! What is brain??! It is Controller, yes?" xD
Sorry, no list, but "Mirror, Mirror" and "Space Seed" are up there. Lately, I quote or post the clip of Khan & Kirk talking about changes i.e. "How little man himself has changed" ;) As it still applies to today ;)
czcams.com/video/r2M8fl6MxUE/video.html
I like most of S1 and S2, S3 is rather shaky due to hack writers :(
And poor budget on S3, it's hard to make a good show when you have half the budget.
Thanks! I've only seen Enterprise all the way through once, and the Mirror episode maybe twice, so I just could not remember the music.
Only saw ENT once as well ;) Here's the theme czcams.com/video/sfbsZRbwbJ4/video.html
Amok Time
Ultimate Computer
City on the Edge of Forever
This Side of Paradise
Mirror Mirror
The Devil in the dark
The Cage
Court martial
The Galileo 7
The Ultimate Computer
Galileo 7 is really good. This is why it's so hard to just name 5.
I hate the Enterprise opening song too.
Such a bad idea for a Star Trek theme opener.
Hang on maybe turnabout intruder
Doomsday machine, garth of izar episode k7 tribbles, the romulan female commander on the d/r 7 kirk steal the romulan cloacking devive, m5 computer. Mirrior mirror
The Garth of Izar episode is a really interesting one.
It's allways city on the edge of forever. Wink of an eye is terrible
Wink of an Eye is terrible.
It's really hard to decide which is worse Turnabout Intruder or Catspaw, they're both so horrid.
No wait catspaw is worse
5. The Squire of Gothos
4. The Doomsday Machine
3. The Trouble With Tribbles
2. This Side of Paradise
1. Amok Time
