- What are the 10 worst cards in OS Magic the Gathering (MtG 93/94)? This question has been on my mind for a while and making this list wasn't easy. First of all, I love all the MtG cards on this list and I also own all of them. A Magic card is more than just its functionality in a deck. A card has flavour, art and especially these old Magic cards have fascinating background stories. However, for this list I cast all of this aside and purely looked at the playability of the card. The result is this top 10 of Worst Magic Cards in MtG 93/94 and I would love to hear your opinion about my list.

You make sense, Timmy! So glad you kept Sorrow's Path iloff the list! It's the best way to win a game if you can give it to to your opponent. I've got a deck that does just that and it's a blast to play, even if it's not very good. I also play Mishra's War machine in that deck too.

does it works? because icy manipulator says that "no effects are generated by target card"; I mean, it shouldn't activate the ability of sorrow's path, right? Or am I wrong, here? 🤔
@Federico Moschetti it does, Icy doesn't actually use that old text that appears on the ABU versions, if you check the oracle text. Plus, the 2 damage from Sorrow's Path is just a condition of it being tapped, not necessarily because it was used for it's ability to swap blockers.

9:00 -- Don't forget Giant Slug! You can stop that pesky 1/1 after it gets plainswalk for (5)! I mean, you can stop it the turn _after_ the ability has been activated because the player doesn't actually get to use it the turn they spent (5) activating it. 😒

Just thought of a combo deck for Cocoon while watching, seems good enough to push it above some of the cards down the list even though it's not that crazy.
Cocoon + Instill Energy in a Verduran Enchantress deck could be playable with Hurricanes to clear the air before you gain flying, maybe poison and enchantment themed.
How about Wood Elemental into Cocoon! Imagine the possibilities!

I loved the over-costed Legendary creatures. They looked so cool, I def think I played those the most. I also remember playing with Cocoon and Farmstead.
4:30 -- You just recently played a game with Wall of Fire and Sword of the Ages, but I don't remember you getting the combo off. Have you managed to get this combo off in the past, particularly with Glyph of Destruction?
Yes, I have won a few games with walls and the sword. Once with wall of fire and the sword, but never with the Glyph 😅 It's still on the mtg bucket list.
It would be cool if you got an additional point or two in X-points for including these cards in your deck.
The thing with Rakalite is that you can activate it multiple times in a turn. as it only returns to hand at the end of the turn in which it was used. So, you could pay for the Rakalite, keep it at the teble for when you needed it and stop all damage you could pay for before bouncing it back. It doesn't make the card good (the initial cost is too high and the cost-per-live is absurd), but perhaps a bit better than Amulet of Kroog.
Fair point, also in a power monolith deck you can have the ultimate protection since you have unlimited mana.
For me it is a hard choise between "Farmstead" and the "Pope-Hat" Urza..... 🤣😂😅😂🤣😂 but that is what we had to work with! 🤘🦁🤘 Do think they are both fantastic Art! Have a fine sunday. 😎
Back in the day a friend of mine took all of his unlimited arabian knights and antiquities cards (this is before sleeves were a thing) and put them in a pile at the center of the table. Instead of having libraries we would all draw from the same deck.
And What happened?
Fire breathing flying swamps and animated walls happened.....it was soo cool to see all of the different combinations of cards that would be played.
Great list...I think an interesting format would be to force players to use a certain amount of these cards just to see the wacky games would ensue.

Fasting does synergize with Balance. Unfortunately it is mostly a non-bo with Lich. With a Lich in play it will be a draw two for 1 white. There might be something there with Greed in the Balance combo. You go down in cards and up in life, Balance does not count the Fasting & Greed, and after the Balance you change the extra life for cards again.
And if you add a knowledge vault, you can fill that hand instantly after you cast the balance. Now i think of it, this deserves further exploring for a future xpoints monthly brew🤔👌🍻
So if you play Glyph of Destruction on a regenerating wall like Wall of Brambles or Wall of Bone, it survives, right?

Wood elemental could be good if you could sacrifice tapped lands. You could combine it with armageddon or balance to replace tha lands you lost or simply destroy the rest of the lands in play and have a huge wood elemental while your opponent has not much. Fastbond can help you replace the lands quicker then your opponent, sylvan library for card variety. Green/ white has has all the pieces to make this work. Splash some black for demonic tutor to get your combo pieces and using terror and swords to keep opponents creatures in check. It would be a really fun deck, but wots had to ruin by making the lands untapped.

@@TimmytheSorcerer That was often the problem in early sets. They where still figuring out design, and did not yet realize how much difference such small things couold do. Especially mana costs on spells and creatures where often a problem.
Take ancestral recall or timewalk, both effects are fine, but the mana cost was way too low for what they did. A bit later they came up with brainstorm, which in a way is an improved ancestral that is not too powerful for such a low cost, since you only get to keep 1 card. But if you can find a way to shuffle your library it is an excellent filter spell, but not broken. Laster timewalks where a lot morte expensive they figured out such an effect should cost like 5 manas, or have some extra effect and cost 6 or 7.
The counterexample are legendary creatures from legends. Most of them where just way too expensive. Like take Livonya silone, six mana, 2 R 2 G and 2 colorless, for a 4/4. That makes no sense when you had creatures like serra angel that costs 1 mana less, is also 4/4, and has flying and vigilance. It seems they thought a 2 color card would be easier to cast, so they made them a bit more expensive, but actually it is harder so they should have been a bit cheaper then comparable single color creatures. They soon realized a creatures power and toughness should be roughly equal to it´s casting cost so 4 mana should get you a 4/4. Any lesss then 4/4 and it´s need a good upside, if you get a 6/6 for 4 it should have some downside. Now of course due to powercreep these days even a 4/4 for 4 needs some upside to be good but back then was the fair eye test for any creature
Cocoon with enchantment alteration. Put that thing on your opponent's creature!!
It's a real long shot, but I suppose Fasting could be cast after you have 7 cards and an Ivory Tower tower down? Gain 5 life a turn to get a huge life total advantage? Then cast an x spell like Hurricane or Earthquake? Or a Channel/Fireball?
Again a huge stretch, much more efficient ways to win. But that's all I could think of? 🤔
Just look at the power level between Rakalite and Mirror Universe for the same CC lol can we get a honorable mention for Divine Intervention? Loool

The laces cycle is horrible. A friend of mine bought the last 4th edition black bordered booster deck from the store and got 2 laces out of the 3 rares in the deck. Chaoslace and Purelace. So underwhelming.

Laces at least work with and against all the color hosers. Sure Sleight of Mind is doing this job better 9 out of 10 times but hey, it's something.
To be fair, Great Wall could also stop the plainswalk ability of Giant Slug (also from the same set.) Though not old school as it came in (I want to say '95), it would stop the plainswalk granted from the Homelands card Aysen Highway also. I mean, still bad it's got a little more going for it. Almost makes it as playable as Deadfall.

I remember back in the days that people changed landwalk skill with magic hack. so the card Great Wall it wasn't only against one card.

Is Farmstead using an upkeep? I would read that as if you spend 2 white on anything, which a white deck will do anyway, you gain a life. So basically 3 mana and every turn afterward yit a free life as long as you have 2 plains. Doesn't have to be on the farm.
The current oracle test is, “Enchanted land has "At the beginning of your upkeep, you may pay WhiteWhite. If you do, you gain 1 life."

Fasting sounds like a card that theoretically could work as side thing in case of two lockdown decks meeting. If you sneak it somehow onto the field and opponent will not remove it, you are 5 more cards away from decking out.
It's not good card and this kind of scenario will happen once in blue moon but hey, it's a thing!
It would be a lot more useful if it wouldn’t destroy itself when you draw a card 🤷♂️, but simply gives you the option and destroys itself when it has the 5 counters..
I'm surprised, no Lifelace?? I still haven't figured out a way to play this card. The other laces, yes, they are bad but you can use them. Lifelace however????

Legends was supposed to be way better than what it ended up being. I remember reading about the design process. Might have been from the WOTC website or inquest magazine. All those big legendary multi-colored creatures were initially designed with much lower casting costs, but whoever was in charge kept upping the costs, behind the mentality that the cards were too powerful. So instead of great magic cards and cool creatures, a lot of them sucked because they were too expensive to cast. But imagine if you took two or three colorless mana off many of those creatures. It’s a story of what might have been!
Wow, thanks for sharing. That would've made all the difference! The only early set that really had the power level of creatures right is Arn in my opinion.

As sad as in makes me that Woode Elemental is so bad....if it weren't for these designers mistakes we wouldn't have all the best cards in oldschool either. They are equally busted in the other direction.

There are actually a lot of useful ways to play with these. Combine them with Warlord and/or play Fallen Angel next to it 😃
Kobolds aren't bad at all on this scale. Just play all the Lords, might even try the coolest of them all; Rohgahh!
Fasting only worked once Necropotence came out but... still sucked!
Life was so overrated at the beginning but if Farmstead cost W1 and gave W+ 1 life when tapped, it'd be a white Wild Growth with more reward since it's farmed and not wild!

Hey Timmy! Just a feedback, stay a little more far from the microphone so that "tumps" don't happen (as example: 1:16). Very nice video! Would be fun a top 10 best decks of the format
Quick tip from a soundengineer. The mistake people make is to put the mic right in front of their mouth. Don't do this uneless you are using a plopscreen (you can easily make one using a frame and putting some stockings over it). Just put the mic next to or under your mouth. It will still pick up just fine but you won't have the "tumps".

Diabolic Machine is complete trash. 4/4 artifact creature that costs 7⃣ to cast, and you get the super duper special ability of regeneration... for 3⃣. 🤦♂️

Fasting is almost as good as ancestral in Lich, although heart of the forest takes this slot most of the time.
It is hard to come up with worse card than Great Wall, but if judging as a whole cycle, and exclude sorrow’s path, overpriced vanilla creatures, only Oasis and Living Artifact can compete.
Brainwash - worse spirit link in 99% of the cases.
Honourable mention: Indestructible Aura - it is both nor gives indestructible nor is an aura. Such a design fail in my book. :)

It's too bad trample doesnt work when blocking with a creature. Glyph of destruction would be OP with a berserk casted on Living wall.
Cause if I am not mistaken. Living wall counts as a creature, and a wall.
20 points of trample damage while blocking would be super funny.
Also if this was a thing. living wall wouldnt be destroyed by berserk at end of turn because it is not attacking. Its blocking. Berserk says attacking creature is destroyed at end of turn. Says nothing about blocking creatures.
Nvm glyph of destruction would destroy living wall in this case. Unless regenerate counters this.
Still it was a funny idea though. :D
Make Walls Great Again!
Walls 🙌 you can still regenerate your wall btw, so it’s great with Living Wall or other reg walls like Wall of Bones and Wall of Brambles.
OK i am with U Most the Time...but think about that U can play a wall Deck...WE have a card that allowed ure Walls to attack...and a card U can switch the Power with toughness..OK that cards are a little younger but Not so much.. so the glyphts may be interesting...but Not in the Set they released...i know
the problem is red does not have many good walls, the best walls for a dseck like this are probably blue´s wall of illusion (7/4 flying first strike, but cummulatibe upkeep of U) and wall of swords 3/5 flying. After all walls do not have trample so you need some level of evasion.
Also as you said attacking with walls is NOT in old school, which this video is about. So there is no longer a home for this kind of deck since vintage and legacy (the only formats other then old school you could play glyphs) are on a way too high powerlevel.

@@markuskruger5348 Yea fair enough and back then we had decks liker that that where really good, but due to powercreep, especially on creatures, there is sadly no longer a real home for this archetype. Back in the day I have played against them and they where really good and fun . Both to play and to play against
You could maybe make it work in commander, but I don´t think there is enough spells to empowewr your walls and make them do cool shit like blow up in the opponents face or attack.
So even with tutors it wouild probasbly lack consistencyl, and many playxgroups don´t likle tutors since they kinda go against the spirit of commander. A huge part of the fun is to have 4 games against the sdame deck and each time is radically different since different spells get drawn, different creatures summoned etc.
I think most Glyphs can only be used when you block. I do think the red one has some potential and that's why I'm mentioning that one (I also played with it).

Cocoon does something. Great wall does literally nothing.
My reasoning was that Cocoon actually hurts you, because it taps your creature and keeps it tapped for multiple turns. Great Wall does nothing, so it also doesn’t hurt you 😅
I understand the logic here, but I feel like you could in theory make it work, even if it's bad. The issue is, you are literally never making great wall work. I think great wall is number 1

All of these cards are great if you're playing against someone who likes to make you discard - atleast he or she will get dissapointed when seeing which cards you discarded... ;)
I'm thinking about organising a tournament where you at least need to play with one playset of a card mentioned in this list :))
@@TimmytheSorcerer Cool ;) It is indeed a fun challenge to try and make bad cards playable. I'm actually trying to build a deck which will include a lot of cards with downsides to them. The idea is to create a deck of maybe 100 cards that is going to be a shared by two players. It won't be Old School only, but rather cards from 1993-2000 and probably only one of each card. Furthermore, I might make some special rules about mana sources - maybe each player has a few mana sources from the beginning, or maybe you share lands with the opponent. But most importantly of all, it needs to be both unpredictable and fun!
Im not so happy with this top list. Sure some cards suck but others are playable ^^
I'm purely looking at playability not at lore or art in this list. What cards would you take out and which ones would you add?

Come on, Wood Elemental can be played for 4 mana sacking no forests, and going straight to your graveyard where Nether Shadow finds its way up again!

Rakalite: If you are playing Power Artifact with Basalt Monolith combo deck, adding this card gives you a way to prevent infinite damage once per round.
