Natural hair became easy for me when I learned to accept my hair, stopped using a bunch of products, and learned proper detangling techniques. With proper detangling I can wash and condition my hair in 30-40 minutes. Plus I wash and wet my hair MORE. The longer I wait to wash, the more detangled the hair gets. Also, I've got like 5 or 6 styles that I rotate through and feel my most prettiest in. Bam easy.

    • @Mskyraelise

@@carina9629 I have thick type 4 hair. I have no idea about porosity. Various stylists have told me different things and so I just don't know 😂 I know when my hair is dry and needs moisture and when it is good so the hair facts don't really matter to me.
I had a wash hour today and here is what I did and always do.
      1. Take my hair out of previous style (high bun with added Marley hair) and wet thoroughly while finger detangling.
      2. Shampoo all hair at once and continue finger detangling
      3. Split hair into 4-6 sections and apply conditioner while continuing to finger detangle. THEN, detangle hair with denman 38 paddle brush.
      4. Let conditioner sit while I wash, shave, etc.
      5. Take all the clips out, rinse conditioner out
      6. Get out of shower, apply leave in and grease if I'm not blowing the hair out
      7. Style accordingly. Today was 2 cornrows down to a low bun in the back. (Other styles: high puff, sleek low bun, high sleek bun with Marley hair) (blowout styles: sleek low bun, sleek ponytail to the back and wand curl my ponytail hair that is left out, ponytail attachment from beauty supply store)
The 2 braids into a bun I have now could last all week if I wrap it every night but if it's getting dry I'll wet my hair and remoisturize on Wednesday or Thursday and go into a high puff possibly to finish out the week.

When I think about relaxing my hair again, I am reminded of all the horrible hair dressers I put up with for many years. The bad attitudes, the always changing their location, the mystery products, the I know what is best despite telling the stylist what my hair likes, to prices that are like "you kidding me right...". If nothing else I can always wash, condition and put my hair in a nice protective style.

I think the biggest thing that hurts the natural hair community is people wanting hair textures they don’t have. When I stopped styling my hair in ways that were different from my natural texture I started really loving my hair. A wash and go is a wash and work so I don’t do them. I started styling my hair in ways that allowed my natural curl pattern to remain so there was no reverting of the style when humidity hit my hair. I also just accepted that once a week or twice a month I’m going to need to set aside 2 and a half hours to do my hair. Be realistic. Stop following people with looser hair. And find styles that compliment your actual hair texture and curl pattern so your style lasts. Oh, and actually learn how to take care of your hair. Healthy hair is the best hair.

First off, I am in a LOVE AFFAIR WITH MY HAIR!!
I started my natural hair journey in 2017, started making my hair myself in 2018, Mastered Wash n Go in 2021, got to bra strap length in 2021, had major set back due to pregnancy, postpartum, miscarriage and anaemia, did my big chop to 6 inches in 2022 and almost a year later, I'm close to my scapula.
These are the lessons I've learnt so far:
    1. Healthy body produces healthy hair.
    2. Consistency and Patience is utmost.
    3. Not all hairstyles will fit into my book.
    4. I have multi texture which ranges from waves, to curls, to kinks, to coils, zig zag, straight etc.
    5. Climate and environmental factors, density, style of choice and texture affect the choice of style and products I use.
    6. I invest in good tools to make my work easier. I don't follow fear mongers.
    7. I also invest in products that help make my job easier, hair smoother and conditioned and grow. I don't follow politics and fear mongering
    8. I follow rooted and grounded people in the Science and Art of Natural hair.
    9. I educate myself voraciously for the benefit of my hair.
If you are not in Love with your hair, you would find it difficult to maintain it.❤

I think self hatred still plays a big role here. If you still find straight or loose hair the top of the beauty standard, youre gonna be affected by your natural hair not fitting any of those. I find that this particular natural hair movement differs from the 60s and 70s bc major Black female stars wore 4c twas with full confidence and they looked great. I find many of us dont think short 4c hair is beautiful or 'done'. And we are allowing outsiders to define done, pretty, and presentable in a space that is supposed to be FUBU!
Since going no butters no oils, my hair has THRIVED. And I discovered that we believe so many myths about tightly coiled hair. We see it as coarse, rough, needing to be tamed and beat into submission. Imagine discovering its just as fragile and needing a gentle touch as any other hair? Blew my mind. Didnt think I could walk outside with no raw oils in my hair. Boy was I WRONG. Even my plaque psoriasis cleared up! I struggled for years with painful, red, bleeding plaque psoriasis. Im so pleased with the simplicity of my new regiment. I see complicated and tiring regiments are a result of expectations and sometimes self hatred, and sometimes the perception that straight hair is easier to maintain. And its not true. Look how long these girls take to wash wigs, dye em, press em, melt em, curl em, etc. That too can take an entire day. Hanging out that fake hair all over tables, hanging it up like expensive garments, all that space required for that. Its not easier to maintain. You are willing to put in the effort bc you think its worth it. You adhere to that beauty standard.

    • @ALove4Me
      @ALove4Me  Před 10 měsíci +43

But you have to consider that although the straight and fake hair takes just as long to maintain, the result is one that they like. Where as, going through the process of natural hair and it not coming out as desired is discouraging. I understand where you are coming from, and clearly I know my hair well, but I wanted to offer you another perspective

    • @Neferfifi21
      @Neferfifi21 Před 10 měsíci +45

right exactly. It's not about natural hair being too much work for those people, it's about them not liking the look. Which they should just say that. Self hatred plays a very obvious role but it's hard to have honest conversations in this era because we all have to support whatever women do in the name of "choice feminism". We have to "if you like it I love it' each other to death

    • @KoldFiyure
      @KoldFiyure Před 10 měsíci +33

@Neferfifi21 PERIOD! If you are disappointed that your hair isn't coming out like YOU WANT and it's causing you to want to risk fibroids using a dangerous chemical treatment, YOU HAVE NOT ACCEPTED WHAT YOU HAVE. What you desire with your current expectations has to be examined thorougly! You dont like your natural hair. You're trying to live up to something that you can't.
I stopped doing twistouts, bantu knot outs, braid outs, etc! I fell in love with my own natural curl pattern and texture. It is pleasing to me and it is GORGEOUS. My hair is THICK! I MEAN THICK! DENSE! SOFT! A pretty almost JET BLACK CLOUD! I like it for what it is, AS IT IS!

Yes. Agree with every single point you made about the lies we tell ourselves about our hair being too much work.
You can wash your hair every 5-10 days and spend no more than Teo hours. It takes all day for some people because it all the shingling and manipulating they are doing to their hair.
I do my wash and go in the shower and it takes 5 mins to detangle my hair, and maybe 20 max to do the rest.

@@Neferfifi21Black people, women especially, need to learn that they don’t understand every other black woman and their motives. You making assumptions and being judgmental about strangers won’t help anyone who may actually have issues accepting themselves. It is not self-hatred to not like the look of your hair, it’s just that you don’t like the look of your hair. And yes, natural hair is more work, plain and simple. Some of us don’t have time to spend 4+ hrs on just our hair. Hair length and density play a huge role in how much time it takes to style hair. And it’s beyond frustrating to spend 4hrs washing, detangling and styling my hair for a bit of humidity to ruin it in minutes. I’m not about to glue some Brazilian woman’s edges to my head or do quick weaves or whatever else and act like I’m better than those who relax. Just let people live their lives and wear their hair how they want. As long as no one is banging down your down and forcing a relaxer on you, you’ll be alright.

Everything changed for me when I started medschool. You literally have NO TIME for all this. I was forced to think of my hair as an extension of my body (I know it’s a literally part) just like my nails, lashes, teeth etc vs how I used to think of it which was as a responsibility. Now, I’m more in love with my hair. I understand my hair and I know what it’s going to look like when I attempt a style. Now, I attempt a style because I like it not because I want to achieve a certain curl type with the results
Rather than look at my wash hour and night routine as a burden, I now see it as things every woman who cares about her look does. Upkeep! Some may say I’m biased cuz I have long and dense hair, but I truly think this can apply to women with natural hair of any length (medical conditions exempt). I have had quite a journey and am at peace with my hair now. It is an extension of my body not a responsibility. My hair owes no one anything

I shampoo 2x, finger detangling for the 1st session put my hair in twists to focus on my scalp for the 2nd session, and deep condition it for 15 to 25 minutes with heat. After that, I rinse my deep condition out and do my moisture routine. Tie my hair up in a t-shirt and let it sit for an hour before blow drying with my RevAir, which takes a little under an hour. My whole wash day process is literally under 3 hours. After I blow dry, I just put my hair in four chunky flat twists until I'm ready to put in my protective style, which is usually mini twists. I don't mind having to do my hair. My mini-twists take me 6 hours to do. I make sure to watch movies or series. This way, I don't get frustrated.

I’m over the idea of “done” hair because it usually means contorting your hair into styles that cause pain and tension. Something about braids, pony tails, and wigs have always seemed like self induced pain that black women feel the need to endure to be seen as beautiful. Even if the style isn’t overly tight, it is still more stress on the hair and scalp than letting your hair be free.

    • @Nitra813
      @Nitra813 Před 10 měsíci +3

I don’t believe it’s as black and white as having “done” hair though. Theres a loooooot of nuance involved there.
My hair in particular has a few different textures which look crazy in a shrunken state. Genetics play a major role here. That being said. There’s good and valid reasons why we have hair stylists and why we get our hair “done”
One is to help keep our hair looking more uniform in curls or texture. Especially woman like me with multiple textures and crazy shrinkage.
Which is why many women opt for a relaxed or blown out styles. The end goal wasn’t to “hate” , control or cause pain. The end goal was to have a uniform hair pattern. They “like” and prefer how their hair looks with uniform texture. It’s aesthetically pleasing. Just like if you braid your own hair most likely you prefer EVEN parting as opposed to uneven parting.😅
Also think of why men go get haircuts, or why people go to the dentist, or to the get lash extensions, or to their nails done or even to get facials.
Society likes to thinks that they “hate themselves” but in actuality it’s simply grooming themselves for a more uniform aesthetic.
I do agree with you that beauty doesn’t have to equate to pain.

It is so ironic....I could not see myself w/o a relaxer & now I can't ever see me not being natural. I love the texture & everything about it actually. I also embraced my silver strands & what a relief to embrace the real natural all of me. I consider myself a lazy natural..99 percent of the time twist up & out on damp or dry hair. Since I don't let anyone touch my hair, I purchased the revair when I want a stretch & when I want something different I use my flex rods or braid out. I use the same 4 products, wash twice a month & it stays nice because I refresh nightly. Most weekends I keep my twist in & wear a silk scarf with my twist hanging down. I dust my ends as needed & any ssn. I enjoy doing my hair & feeling put together for I work outside my home. This video really resonated with me. I’m a natural that’s still enthusiastic about the journey and trying to retain length to reach waist length. I realized when I kept my routine simple, I’m more likely to do it. I got swept up with doing the most and that’s when I neglect my hair. All my friends don’t wear their hair because they feel it’s too complicated to deal with and I partly blame the natural hair movement for that.

I almost quit my natural hair before it fully got off the ground. On the other side of this coin, I was the curly who thought I was supposed to have kinky hair. I wanted thick, lush, kinky coily hair! I big-chopped several times because I was confused as to why my hair wasn't growing in kinky. I thought my hair was so heat-damaged that it was growing out of my scalp that way (I know how ridiculous that sounds). Imagine my surprise when after the 3rd big chop, my hair was still loose curls. SMH. I was low-key mad about it and seriously wanted to quit. I wanted to wear braid-outs, my hair won't braid-out. I wanted twist-outs. My hair won't hold a twist out. I wanted to use oils and butters. They dry my hair out. Now that I've excepted myself through my own self-inflicted texturism, I love my new short wash days and only use 3 products. I'm still bonding with my hair, but at least we understand each other and I won't "quit" her. We need each other. 🥰 Love the video!

randomgrannie. Lol! I thought I was the only one who’s hair doesn’t hold twist outs. I can only wear wngs. It took time for me to learn my hair, it’s needs, and to use the right products that work for it. I wear wngs everyday and I’m fine with that!

This happened to me with front half of my hair (im multi-textured). I cut my hair twice and stopped all heat, then realized my hair naturally grew that way 😂. I was pissed that I could get cute coily bangs.

I resonate with this. I have different curl patterns on different parts of my head, but all coarse hair. My hair never smooths, and only some of it will curl. Dreadlocks worked well on my coarse hair, because it will definitely lock on itself even areas that aren't coily, though the coils lock the most easily and in the smallest locs. Now that I'm wanting to wear my hair without dreadlocks for a change, I'm noticing how hard this combination is to do much else with. These days I just blowout with revair to keep the ends stretched and avoid single strand knots, and then put in a couple of large flat twists or french braids, then either wear that out or cover with a wig. Plan to try a keratin treatment soon to see if that will finally give me a smooth enough finish to wear a loose straight style, but the wash n go for me never looks like anything.

So true! Im so thankful my mom kept my hair natural until I started middle school, I was able to know my hair texture and knew what I had before I went natural again 20 years ago. Many people got relaxed to young, and thought their hair was going to look different then what grew out.
Many people hopped on the trend, for the trend and not for the love the hair.
It really comes down to self expectance.

This was me. My mom relaxed my hair in elementary school and when I went to high school, I wanted to transition to natural because all the other girls were doing it online. This was back in the 2010s. I have 4c hair and hated it. It didn't help that my whole family (including parents and family friends) made fun of me or called me ugly when I already had low self-esteem as a teenage girl.
I ended up wearing my hair in braids back to back and never wore my hair out. In college, I locked my hair and really loved it. Now I've had locs for almost 10 years. I sometimes think about going back to loose natural now that I'm older with more confidence. But I still enjoy my locs too.

Really appreciate you broaching this topic, thank you! Once I came to the realization that I hated the process of twisting/braiding/etc. to keep it stretched, it clarified for me that I don't hate my hair, I've just not been willing to wear it exclusively in a shrunken state. I admit I continue to struggle with shrinkage because while I love my texture (kinky, coarse, "4c"), I become bored when the progression of length retention is not immediately evident. I've always loved to use my hair as an additional fashion accessory, so having it appear to be in the same style at the same length (though it is of course just growing and then shrinking) for extended periods of time frustrates me. It feels as though my self expression stops at my crown instead of extending through it. For now, blowouts each wash day are really helpful so that I can keep it stretched and find some joy in playing with top knots, updo's, pony's, and even fluffy Afros closer to the next wash day. Seriously considering that RevAir tho (and thank you for the review!); I'm even too lazy for a traditional blow-dry session lmao. Thanks again for keeping it a buck and opening up this space for this community to be honest and vulnerable. Very grateful for you and your channel.

I relaxed my natural hair in 2020 and instantly regretted it. Last year I decided to transition and cut off all the relaxed ends this past August. Over the past year I took the time to learn about natural hair care for my hair. I watched a ton of Anthony Dickey tutorials and now my wash and go is amazing. I’m no longer aversed to hydrating my coils two to three times a week. I do my own protective styles but don’t keep them in longer than three weeks. Developing a simple routine and keeping my hair hydrated has made a world of difference.

I love my curly hair and I don't mind my wash day routine, because it only takes 3 hours from start to finishing under the hooded dryer, but I too need a break. Maybe if I had of found a good curly hair stylist where I live I might not be so ready for a change. My change will never push me towards relaxers or perms though.......whatever I do I still want to work with my texture. When I went natural in 2015 after being relaxed for 37 years, it was a serious eye opener. I had no clue how to take care of my own natural hair which I thought was a same. I followed CZcamsrs with beautiful thick hair that was nothing like mine. I bought a cabinet full of products and used no silicones, co-washed, etc. I hated my hair. Once I started listening to my hair, we became friends and I love my hair and will never go back to a perm. My wash day now is a little more than 2 hours which includes my 30 minutes deep conditioning. I do get tired sometimes but wigs i don’t do. I only do braids for vacations. For me, the hardest part is getting started.

I have the salon trying to get me to put chemicals, dye it to make my hair more manageable as they claim. I finally stop going when she tried to made an appointment to cut it in a style I didn't want, and put a texulizer in it. I stopped going to the african braiding place because they would half do it. My main gripe with my natural hair is feeling like its more of a responsibility than anything else. The costs are a lot for me, as well as putting in so much effort to baby my hair without much reward? So many products, wash days and bad combos, just for it to still be dry as ever and fragile. I've spent so much money on "affordable" products and I'm tired of trying new ones. My hair is pretty "long" like maybe even nearly waist length now, I don't really check anymore, but due to shrinkage theres pretty much zero visual difference when dry. I thought I'd feel excited to finally experience long hair but I don't really get to experience it besides more detangling and product used up. I don't even have the energy to style anymore and just wear my hair in two twists or a bun.

Not for a fresh start, just to get rid of it and not have it. I hate it. It makes me miserable. I don't have two hours every morning. I don't have time for my hair to take 9 (yes I've counted, literally NINE) hours for my hair to air dry. It's always dry and brittle and any time I go to a salon around me, they charge you over 100 dollars to chop it all off and say it wasn't worth saving. At a certain point, it makes you want to give up

I have never not been natural, I have learnt some lessons over the years with my hair. And I do different things, during and after lockdown I kept my hair curly, in its natural pattern, wash n go’s were my thing, then when I had less time switched to protective styles, would literally do braids in succession and keep them in for 6-8 weeks, then recently I have gone straight natural, so most of the time my hair is straight, although I would only apply heat once every month or so, then maintain it, going back to protective styles again soon. There is so much to do with our hair now, and so much information, that whatever your schedule if you want to stay natural you most certainly can, and it will be manageable. But it’s still totally personal preference.

This is interesting to me. I never thought about it this way but this is exactly what happened. After losing the 2 patches of my edges where the combs go on the wigs in the front, and the upkeep of buying wigs JUST to look "acceptable" and lose my edges. I was over it. Then after 3 years of wearing my loose natural hair; it just got to a point where i said "i literally dont have time for this" a FULL day of washing and redoing my hair after working 40 to 50 something odd hours a week...i told myself that doing my hair was my relaxation time and it worked for a while i did love it but the god honest truth was if i dont do my hair than im going to work looking a mess and at some point im going to damage my hair through breakage... basically it eventually just got to a point where none of this is feasible...i dont want to keep spending money on wigs or going to hair stylist every 1 to 2 months only to come out with damaged hair and i cant keep taking a full day every 2 to 3 weeks to maintenance my hair. So i loc'd it a little over a year ago. Now i can shampoo my hair every 2 to 3 weeks still but its 1 hour to the 16 to 18 hours i spent before. i retwist every 2 to 3 months and thats 2 hours of my time.. i did quit my natural hair. Its cheaper i spend like 15 bucks on shampoo probably every 6 months and 11 bucks on gel ever 6 months compared to the conditioners and deep conditioners that i RAN through like water but even that was cheaper than wigs. Because youd need all that stuff to maintenance your hair than the 200 to howver much wig then a whole separate set of products just for the wig...i never thought about all this before..talk about black girl magic how the hell do we find time for all this and raisie kids and get degrees...sheesh

My hair is bra strap length i think, 45% gray, one side is thicker than the other side. And i accept it all and work with what i have. I actually enjoy the thinner side because its easier to work with and creates less heat. Amd when it frizzes up noone can tell ajyway. Too much length is too hot and the hair ctaches on evevrything. Its really overrated. I also love access to my scalp which is so free and not itchy. Its the little things we take for granted. Keep it Simple Sistas and Love yourself. 😊😊😊😊😊😊

I've been natural since 2009 and never regretted it one single day! I had this beautiful hair all my life but hid it with constant relaxing. For me, relaxers were harder to maintain. I had to touch up the new growth. There was no way around it. It was impossible for my hair to be in a healty state because the chemicals took it so far from its original state. Having healthy relaxed hair is an oxymoron. The protein structure of the hair is weakened and broken down over time. I constantly had dryness, breakage and split ends. I was so happy to put all that energy into learning how to care for my natural hair and its not complicated at all. I find its much, much easier. BTW, i have 4c hair.

I always focused on my porosity and and went by the look and feel of my own hair. Luckily I fell in love with my own hair. I’ve had people try to market products to me to make my curls “looser and manageable” and I get offended when stylist approach me with a chemical to alter my hair, which is why I don’t go to salons now. Though I love my hair, I still go through periods of hating how it’s shaped and how it’s failing to grow mostly because I get tired of doing my hair so it would mat up and break and thus the shape would be wonky, so all of that frustration is my own doing …
And though I’ve entertained the thought, relaxing it is just not an option for me. I’ve never been against perms/relaxers or weaves or wigs. Going natural taught me that there is a space for every journey and we should give ourselves the freedom to be free instead of always coming for someone for not subscribing to the way of the masses. One size doesn’t fit all. There are some people who will never be natural just like there are some people who will never relax. But to each their own. I just wish people would learn to love what they have and explore all options without envying what someone else has going on. That’s a battle you’ll always lose.
This video was well said. It hit on a lot of points that I’ve been saying for years. But you can’t fix the deep seated self hate and insecurities everyone all over the globe wrestles with, which is what it boils down to. Wether you hate your hair or you’re trying to validate your hair through other people in a militant and annoying way, it all comes out to the same issue. The world tries to dictate what POC do every day. We gotta stop doing the same thing to ourselves and allow ourselves to exist however we want to exist, and that’s not a singular thing.

    AWESOME video topic!
Twice this year I strongly considered going back to relaxers after over a decade of being natural. That’s my indicator that something is definitely up when it comes to my view of my hair at the moment...it’s been a long journey with some progress, but not a ton of progress over the years. My big struggle was/is expectation vs reality struggle. That took the longest for me to get under control.
At this point, I just need to decide what’s next for me.

Once I began to love my hair and love myself, I realized that I would always be natural going forward (been natural since 2011). Self-hatred is taught. Braids is a natural style, depending on how you do it. Extensions is probably not considered natural. I loccd my hair 7 months ago, and I still consider that natural. I don't use relaxers, straighteners, or products except for shampoo and oil. But I do interlock my hair. There is no hair that does not require some maintenance, but I think that self-love plays a huge role in it.

Love this, per usual. I can definitely relate. When I first started going natural, I was not happy with the fact that my hair did not respond in the way that others did. I have low density, fine strands and all I saw was big voluminous hair on CZcams! I was frustrated to say the least and felt like my wash and gos would always look drab and limp. After experimenting with different products I learned that it had little to do with the product and more to do with understanding my hair and the technique. That's one of the things I learned from you Achia. All was not lost I thought, so I continued to embrace my fine, low density hair and find ways to make it work. I began taking hair vitamins, which I can honestly say made a huge difference. I tried them for at least 3 months per the instructions and noticed a difference. Also, just using a different pic, change the way I looked at my hair!!!! Something that simple! I embraced the things that worked and released those that didn't. However, I never stopped and was determined that this was my new way of life. I always appreciate you sharing such valuable information and always keeping it 💯. You have definitely helped change the game for me and I'm sure loads of other naturals as well. Yes, I believe everyone gets tired of their natural hair however that with anything, lol You have to remember your why and either keep it moving or choose an alternative. I can honestly say now that I love my wash and gos.... It took a while, but I'm finally here, lol. Specifically, unrealistic expectations that seems to rear its ugly head and discouraging the natural hair journey is key. Embracing our natural texture is LIFE.
