- We're not even a month removed from Redfall and, yes, something worse than that was already delivered to us. Lord Of The Rings: Gollum is the worst game of 2023 so far and by a long shot. It barely works, offers minimal gameplay, and truly left me puzzled on why it exists at all. Not solely because "bad game is bad," but because it so passionately exists and does nothing more throughout its runtime. Avoid this one at all costs.

I was interested in this game, far more than most, but when I saw that microtransactiony shit they were trying to pull, my interest level dropped hard. Stuff like that is always a bad sign and indicative of the mentality of the game as a whole. I was hoping this would be a fun stealth game that showed a different side of the classic story. Very disappointing this is how they executed that.
There are DLC emotes too.
The worst part is there will always be gamers with brain rot who will buy it.

Meanwhile I’ve been craving an expansive LOTR open world adventure based on the book where you play as multiple characters from the fellowship that’s spans the entire adventure in a three part game.
Off the top of my head alone:
- Aragorn's early life where he's hidden away in Rivendell, joining the Rangers, having adventures with Elrond's twin sons while trying to win Arwen's heart.
- Motherfucking Glorfindel
- A dark fantasy Souls-esque based on The Children of Hurin
- The freaking blue wizards who went off destabilising the East over centuries, to the point where their intervention meant Sauron didn't have the army he needed to win!

I authentically LOVE the idea of a Gollum game (in theory) but even I have to agree that if they were just going to shit out another clunker they could at least have chosen a character more fans could potentially get excited about.
I just can't get over than model design for Gollum. How did that make it to the final version. Thats like a previz placeholder for the final thing, not the end result. All the rest of the game aside, the biggest criticism of the trailer was how garbage he looked, and yet they still kept it. Thats just mind boggling right there.
there are also a lot of people having performance issues, and it's people playing on freaking the 4090s having these issues, like WTF lol, the game looks PS2 era and plays like it needs to run crysis, but at the same time it plays like an indy game, which i believe is an indy dev game, just look at the history of games this dev has, it screams indy dev all the way.
sad is there is an indy dev that made a far better game only a few years ago called Styx that works better than this game does and that was similar to this game when it came to stealth, but that game doesn't fucking suck like this one does.
Indie games are like CBGB bands or Edgar Allen Poe. Unnoticed, underappreciated but absolutely awesome and off and on are innovative.
@52262 yeah if the devs had just done basically Styx: Master of Shadows but LotR themed and starring Gollum, choking out orcses and goblinses, that would have made me quite happy as I really liked Styx.

what's crazy to me is all these "stealth" games nowadays that rely on giving the character some type of "vision" that allows them to see the enemies around the corner. It's a mechanic that is shoe horned into so many games nowadays that makes absolutely no sense in most contexts.
the only games where stealth is done right is in horror games, like Alien Isolation were even the sound of your tools would bring attention to you, those games need a great ai and putting that "x-ray vision" is kinda of a cheap way to hide a bad ai

That vision crap actively ruins playing a game. Sure you can not use it, but the games are designed for you to use it. So without it it’s not fun, and with it it makes every task feel more like a chore

I'd like sounds of metallic footsteps or a lumbering orc or whatever that would make up for the lack of visibility.
At least it makes you feel like a halfling sneaking around.
Can come up with creative ways to get rid of enemies, either make one fight another, or distract them via tossing rocks.

I need a documentary about the making of this game. I’m baffled by it. Why? Who? Where? When? What? So many questions.
Its from a german studio called daedelic. They have financial problems for years. Bigben as the publisher helped to finish and release the game. I think Daedelic wasnt ready for a big AAA Game to make. In Germany we have only a few Game Studios who can produce good (A)AA Games, most are strategy or adventure games.
I’m actually one of the few people that wouldn’t have minded a Gollum game. He, of course, isn’t my first choice, but I am interested in his backstory. It seems like this developer just didn’t have the talent to execute on it though. Something akin to Plague Tale would have been perfect for a Gollum game.
A gollum game could have been interesting if they played on his character. Like it they made the game focused on his insanity, devotion to the ring and hurting anyone who got in his way. That would have been good, seeing an aggressive gollum who has wacky moments would have been good.
I think worst thing about this is that it's almost full priced

A Neville longbottom game would be amazing. Could start with extreme difficulty as Neville struggles in early school years and you build up the character to a badass and follow his journey. Tons of side content with his gran and stories of his parents too.
Trevor solving puzzles and eventually you form a close bond with him

Most of the money went to the rights to use the IP, the rest of the $100 went to the game development.

It's exactly what I expected it was going to be when it was announced. Definitely agree with that "it was forced to be made" feeling.
The fact that anyone was excited or put money toward this game in the first place is part of the problem of why games like this exist.

First off Gollum is a very integral character in the LoTR series. He is the one who "stole" the One Ring. I think if they had gone all in on making a Thief type game with the story being about how he acquired the ring and how it changed him, and used Gollum's natural cowardice to create interesting Thief gameplay, it could have been a good game, but I don't see Thief gameplay at all here.
For those unfamiliar, Thief was a game with no combat except to occasionally sap a guard. If you were spotted it was basically game over, and I think that would have been the right gameplay for Gollum. Mind you, Thief is the single best example of a pure stealth game ever created.
They could have just had a side quest in an ACTUAL lotr game where we get gollum lore and info, not this lol this is disappointing.
Styx. Just make Styx but remove some combat utility and replace it with more traversal since Gollum was always climbing all over not just yellow handholds.
It seems like this was contracted. Like whoever owns the rights wanted another game out, the studio was like “well we have some ideas for a Gollum game” and then they were contracted to make it for better or much much worse.

Following Rings of Power, you'd think they would have tried their hardest to make something decent in the name of LOTR. But it looks like they followed in their foot steps.
I don't know what it was about Rings of Power.. I watched the first episode or so and I was shocked at how good some of the effects were.. but for whatever reason I just completely lost interest. I love LOTR, maybe my favorite fantasy movie series ever, but maybe I just like it in movie format and not as a long, drawn out TV show.

I thought they were planning a whole game universe, starting with gollum who whitnesses all the most important parts of the story, but from the shadowd, never getting involved, then they would make each title about a different character, tyng all the stoties together through gollum, who whould be there from start to finish.

6:50 Funny you mention that. There is actually a co-op game about Aragorn that was made called Aragorn’s Quest but it is absolute crap. You control Aragorn and Gandalf in it and some reason you also play as one of Sam’s kids he had after the events in the book he named after Frodo.
I think based on the existence of the Styx games, the potential to make a good enjoyable stealth game where you play Gollum was there, they just compeltely and utterly missed the mark. They not only missed the mark, they fired straight up into the air for no discernible reason and had it smack back down ontop of them.
Even if it was for all accounts an alright game, I don't know about anyone else but man am I burned out from Mordor. The only real Lord of the Rings games we've had in the last decade are the two Shadow of Mordor/War games, like come on guys I'm fed up looking at spikey black architecture and gloomy environments. Give us sections of Gollum in the goblin kingdom, escaping the wood elfs in Mirkwood, evading capture by Aragorn etc.

I think a beautiful stealth based game where you maneuvered Gollum around vistas of Middle Earth as he trails the ring bearers could be really enjoyable. Give the game stealth mechanics like the Thief games paired with high end graphics and a solid lore feel and there you go you've got a game. Or, you know, you could make this.

I'm not a LOTR fan, nor would I have ever wanted to buy/play this game. However, I only knew of its existence since last week. I turned on my Xbox and there was an ad for it and I thought "oh cool they're making a game for the movies" and it didn't say a release date so I thought it was just a one off announcement that Xbox made and that it would come later this year. Anyways my point is that's its extremely weird how, I, not a lotr fan just a casual gamer, only heard of this game a week before it came out (which I would assume is a big enough game to have a month, if not a few, to hype it up) just doesn't seem right that i see an ad for it a week before it releases and then it releases and it sucks lol

The lord of the rings Gollum, Rise of Kong Skull Island, and Quantum error are the worst games of 2023. Redfall however has been heavily patched and is nowhere near as bad as it used to be.
Honestly a better idea for a LOTR game would be one about Aragon and Legolas on some adventures before they meet with the hobbits.

I'm looking forward to digging this one out of a bargain bin for a fiver in a year or so and enjoying it in the same way I 'enjoyed' Turning Point, Kane & Lynch, Ride to Hell, Aliens Colonial Marines, DNF, etc.
I find it genuinely fascinating and fun to play bad games and find and appreciate the elements where you can tell someone worked hard, despite the overall poor leadership and bad decisions.
The best example is The Battleship movie tie-in game which was no doubt awful. But the devs worked their butts of to make an unexpectedly faithful dual naval and FPS combat system that would have been absolutely killer if they'd been given time and resources to refine it, and allowed to implement it in a game that wasn't rushed to meet the movie release and confined by the constraints of a bad movie.
Perfect Lord of The Rings games be like this.
1. Open world game, Middle Earth Map.
2. Players own choice, Good or Evil.
3. Own Army to fight.
4. Own Ring of Power.
5. Own Fortress/Castle for Army.
6. War of The One Ring.
7. Weapons and other cool War items for Army, Level Up or some Upgrade.
8. Lord of The Rings game must be Perfect what we fans love most to play.

It was a good co-op game but waaay too short. I feel a improved and longer War in the North sequel would do well.

I had this idea that Monolith needed to mqke a sequel to the shadow series where you create your own Orc and try to reunite the orcs after the fall of Sauron. This, was not worthy of all the great lotr games.

The DLC portion is what really made me say no. Most of it is stuff that should’ve been included but was cut just so they could make more money. It’s pathetic
Such a pity. Gollum’s story from aquiring the ring, surviving Goblin town beneath the Misty Mountains, escaping, pursuing Bilbo, encountering Sauron, getting captured by Aragorn/Gandalf, escaping and pursuing the Fellowship is compelling.
But looks like they dropped the ball technically, design and content wise.
His story intertwines much of the main story, and Tolkien himself was heartbroken he couldn’t write a ‘redemption’ arc for Gollum. He was destined to be a tragic character, and Eru’s servant in completing his overarching Eucatastphy.
Cool story, coulda been a cool game. But seems it was not in the right hands. A pity.

I feel like 2023 has already been so bad for games saying it is the worst game of the year lacks context.....it needs to be compared against all time.
LOTR as a whole is just a franchise waiting for a good game. I mean imagine running around as Aragorn or an another Ranger few years before the war. Imagine Moria as a whole expansive dungeon. Imagine bree or Rivendell as a hub area. So much creativity waiting to be unearthed and they come with this shit.

Gollum looks like it was made for the original Wii, but runs like your computer is one of those garage-sized computers back during WWII.
It looks like nothing good has happened to LoTR franchise since the P. Jackson trilogy and The Lord of the Rings Online game. Creators are simply not putting even 10% of thought this franchise deserves. And the LoTR fans have very high expectations - and rightly so.
Dont dare give up integrity for review codes Mr Matty. There are only a few reviewers whos opinons i listen to. If EVERYONE gave their honest opinions then these game devs wouldn't be able to embargo people. Just unfortunate that many people put themselves first.

But we got some really good stuff in RE4R, Dead Space (remake) and Like a Dragon Ishin (another remake 😑). Then newer stuff like Wo Long, Jedi Survivor, Hogwarts Legacy, and Zelda.

I remember seeing this game being teased like 3-4 years ago and even back then I never had any faith that it would be interesting. Like, because Gollum doesn't really have any interesting combat mechanics like Aragorn or Legolas or even Frodo would have, so it automatically makes it uninteresting, like it's unique to sneak around as him I guess but after a few hours I would get totally bored of that shit. It's Lord of the Rings man, give me a sword or axe or bow lol so I'll just go do another playthrough of Shadow of Mordor/War
A proper stealth game can be loads of fun, but it has to be perfectly executed, and this was most definitely not it. Gollum would have made for a great stealth game, but it would have been necessary to market it properly, make it properly and probably not try to sell it as a AAA game.

The idea could have worked. I can imagine a sort of Untitled Goose Game meets GTA Middle Earth that could have been really fun. But it’s like they didn’t realise the idea of Gollum as lead character could only work in a comedy game.

A lot of media centered around the works of Tolkien try their very best to recapture the magic that was the Peter Jackson movies but failing miserably at it and this poor excuse of a game is definitely no exception.
