Redfall Is Arkane's Fallout 76 Moment... | Review

- Arkane is a studio that I'm a ride-or-die for. The entire Dishonored series and Prey are some of the best video games I've ever played. Even with all the reasons that Redfall gave us to not believe in it, I still went in confident this would be at least a fine time. Let's just say that I was not prepared for the technical state, creative bankruptcy, and steps backward that Redfall ultimately is. Each time I fired it up, there was one game that kept coming to mind: Fallout 76.

Microsoft needs to get it together with their first party. This is both ridiculous and embarrassing.
To be fair this started before the acquisition
Edit: By this I meant that it’s also Arkane’s fault for the game itself and Microsoft’s for the state of release, it being overpriced, etc
I should have explained more but I didn’t think this comment would be replied to so much
@@jenjoe4359 Nah, I’m not pulling that nonsense this time. They’re under Microsoft’s umbrella during development. They have every right to go in and demand changes and such.

I love how they increased the price from 60 to 70 and didn’t think to increase the quality as well.

They hope you don't.
I was underwhelmed when they first showed it, but I didn't expect something this bad.
Yeah I always thought it looked like crap from the moment I saw the first trailer. It is pretty shocking that they managed to make it even worse than I had imagined.
Really? I knew it was gonna be garbage from the moment I saw the characters in that trailer. It had that Saints Row Reboot vibe.
@@gundamstyle291 do not the mugmosa
What’s a “sims”?
Yeah I was expecting a somewhat disappointing game, like a 7/10 or something. I wasn't expecting it to be this bad.
I was surprised by the lack of a stealth takedown. It felt strange not being in an Arkane game.
You know it’s really bad and when an Arkane game doesn’t have a stealth take down.
This is the number one thing that jumps out at me and screams 'unfinished.'
I don't get it, why not just reuse the assets of stealth takedowns from the other games. Like, that would be better than a soft punch to the bum.
What also sticked out to me was the absence of leaning.
They DO have a stealth takedown. The classic "Elbow smack" 😂
Seeing Redfall so undercooked on every front like this makes you think - what on earth was Arkane going to release if this dropped last year and wasnt delayed?
Was just wondering that myself, it couldn't have even pretended to be playable.
One leaker claimed that Redfall was going to be released in bad shape and that Starfield was in an even rougher shape. It’s not a good look from Arkane, Beth, or Microsoft.
@@JPerez9011 I don't even have an Xbox or know much about Starfield, but I'd feel confident saying that and that it was a leak, tbh. Their 1st party stuff is a disaster.
@@actuallynotsteve at this point for the past 5 or at least over decade I don’t believe Microsoft is motivated by video games and it’s blatantly obvious at this point I’m not sure why there are Xbox fans to begin with anymore. The 360 era is literally peak Xbox brand alone.
This is Microsoft and Xbox causing this. Terrible.
Arkane used to be innovators. Every game felt different from anything you had played before. Their level designs set such a high bar for immersive sims. Why they wouldn’t stick to their guns absolutely blows my mind. They made such incredible single player immersive sims, I have no idea why they’d want to make an open world co-op looter shooter.
Agree 100%
@Bzake No, they didn't, Microsoft may be guilt for the game actual situation and launch, but the game itself is all Arkane's fault that was in development 2 years prior to the acquisition. Its was their ideia that Microsoft tried to take profit from it and failed.
@Bzake Microsoft and as they bought them - Bethesda. Uninspired gameplay just smells like bethesda had their fingers far more into it as they should. I don´t expect much more from upcoming Starfield......
Zenimax forced them to make this game because the company was struggling with their single player games not selling well despite good reviews. Fallout 76 is another example.
@@andreasc.2182 Microsoft had nothing to do with making the game. Bethesda have been left alone and they would have released a buggy mess in Starfield if Microsoft didn't stop them. Bethesda Fallout 76 is proof that these Zenimax studios need outside supervision.
Sadly the best thing about this game is bringing awareness of how amazing Dishonored and Prey are. Honestly, they are one of the best games I have ever played and I will always use them as examples of almost perfection.
It's not the same company that did Dishonored anymore.
Unpopular opinion but I really never liked those games, the movement and gameplay feel so clunky
@@antonioc.5778 That Is definitely an unpopular opinion
"Immersive Sims" don't make 💰. Raphael Colantonio (studio founder, who's now left) has said as much. That's why the company ended up being sold.
Now that they're part of Microsoft, there's even more pressure to deliver returns--if not every quarter, then at least every release.
@@tianxiangxiong8223 That is not true.
You can't say the first Dishonored wasn't a critical and commercial success.
The problem started when they wanted to change the protagonist with a female and then a black character... to be progressive.
Progressivism destroys companies and the quality of their products.
The first Dishonored sold 6M copies and it was universally praised, and yet, the sequel with a female protagnist sold only 2M, plenty of people that loved the first one didn't bought the sequel for that reason. The last expansion with a black female protagonista, cause the decide to double down, sold nothing.
Now they can produce only trash, like woke Loopgarbage, another diversity and inclusion product, cause all the good people left long time ago... When you go woke you go broke cause when you go against meritocracy, valid people leave the company.
It's becoming more clear how crucial the folks who left for WolfEye were for Arcane.
The difference between this and Fallout 76 is that 76 had a brand name behind it to do some of the heavy lifting. With all the competition and the lack of brand name power I see this being forgotten like Bleeding Edge
Well said.
Was it just me and my friends who loved bleeding edge deta then the actual game came out and felt it was awefull and buggyer
Now fo76 is a lot better but idk if arkane will be able to salvage this; fo76 wasn’t touted as an exclusive though and had Bethesda studios behind it, arkane is smaller and like you said it’s a new ip, fo76 branding deemed it near mandatory if not outright so for Bethesda to sort it out, I just wish Xbox had less of these flops and more fo4s and skyrims and fo3s as exclusives.
whats bleeding edge ?
@@ouroboros3705 Exactly
Am I the only one who can't help but not be surprised? My skepticism has just gone up more and more these past few years when games get announced, release, and gracefully crash and burn.
At this point a good pc game is the exception not the rule
No. It’s easy to predict nowadays.
Not surprised at all. I would have been more surprised if the game was getting GOOD reviews. What I saw leading up looked like nothing special.
xbox has never impressed me genuinly last time they impressed me with exclusives was the 360 days
I knew this would be a stinker since i saw it.
The characters have that woke appearance that all there characters look like.
The gun play looked awful too.
The world is also super flat and generic.
I think the most shocking thing for me is how the story is presented. Like the trailers were full with snark and life and in the game itself, everything is bland.
Redfall was obviously was suppose to be a "game as a service" but at some point they stopped going down that path and tried to switch to a single player/ sudo coop. I think that explains most of the deign issues.
*pseudo and I agree, the game feels like it would've benefited more from the devs fully going the single player route like their best games, trying to go the hybrid route honestly sent this down the Deathloop path of disappointment
The fact that Prey was abandoned and we will never see another game in that universe is the most disappointing experience I've ever had in 30 years of being a gamer.
i literally loved that game, it just scratched that itch
I've wanted Dishonored 3 forever now lmao...such a sick world/lore and it's just binned, like wtf
@@kywildcats2275 Man, nothing will come close to the moment I realized what I was actually playing. A total immersive sim with an entire space station to explore. So friggin good.
I agree with hawk dishonered 3 is one of my top 3 most wanted games to be created
Has it been confirmed that they aren't returning to that? That's really disappointing. I dropped the game once because I wasn't feeling it but returned to it and it's one of my favourite games in recent times.
I booted up my Xbox 360 the other day, and I was genuinely blown away by how many absolutely golden games we used to have. Fallout, Halo, Fable, Oblivion, Left 4 Dead, Half Life, just banger after banger. Game studios used to pump out classics every year, a renaissance…
And these days… I don’t even want to rant, how are games so consistently terrible now. Shit’s depressing.
agree. 360 was awesome. Xbox has been total trash the last ten years tho
For me the problem lies with how long and difficult it is to make games these days. Each game has to be jam packed with content and have amazing real graphics and also release in 3 years. Except most studios are incapable of achieving in creating a "great" game in a short time frame, so they constantly get delayed. Where as 15 years ago, games were made to run on 4 gigs of ram and be no larger than 8gb to install, so it was easier to release unique and fun creative games in short time frames of 1 - 2 years.
My point is, games now a days take a long time to make, but by the time they get their original idea and build it, the video game "meta" has already changed and players will no longer be interested in what you have created 4 years ago, at least for new IPs. So developers are always going back to the drawing board and changing things, and removing things, and in the end, their original idea has been butchered and we're left with just a shell of a broken game at release.
@@timmyboy99 this definitely true. Budgets are bloating. Expectations for amount of content compared to 20 years ago is insane. Gamers want content bigger, better, and they want it now. They want it on sub services, or free to play. It leads to empty open world games, games rushed in general, and developers being pressured to stuff micro transactions in games. This falls on both sides of the fence. Greedy developers, delusional consumers. This is going to become the norm
@Robert Allshouse it's already the norm, since 2015, since Evolve released I feel like is when the shift in gaming began
Old game good, new game bad
thank you for saving me and my buddies a huge amount of frustration. great review. i was skeptical about this, especially after deathloop. all this makes me wanna do is start a fresh save of Prey.
The worst part about is that I came into with no expectations and now I’m disappointed we are never going to see the incredible potential of this setting made into a great or even just good game.
Unfortunately the game never really caught my attention, and it's sad to see I was right about it. The Dishonored franchise is very special to me and I really enjoyed my time with Prey. To see them sink this low is genuinely heartbreaking.
It didn’t have me like super hyped and trailers just looked kinda okay but since it was arkane I was like man I can’t wait arkane has never really let me down before. Welp lol
I'm so shocked a single player game dev team has put out a stinker of a multiplayer game....It's like this has already happened before, multiple times.
Lmao frfr
its a product of the Zenimax sale. thats the reason why every zenimax studio started live service projects despite not having live service experience, to pump up their asking price before selling, and MS acquiring them. live service aren't to hot today, but back then when they were being shopped live service was the thing to have for every publisher.

Yeah, Matty is definitely gonna be blacklisted by Bethesda after this, but I think even Matty, as optimistic as he is, is starting to realize Bethesda hasn't been great post Morrowind. @ArchieGamez I know it's disgraceful it didn't sell well its a game that has truly stuck with me.
I remembered a Video where they say every arkane games is a flop or sold poorly after dishonored.
I'm frankly devastated. Arkane has been my favorite studio for so long. I Firmly believe that dishonored 1,2, and doto were amazing and Prey is nothing short of a masterpiece. I hope they stop this direction and go back to their core single player immersive sim experiences that made them so loved. Please Bethesda, Xbox, whoever has say in this. This answered the question i got in my mind when I saw the Redfall trailers: "Why do RedFall and Back4Blood seem so similar?"
Like honestly hearing this and seeing how the menus, gunplay, and general visual style of the games are so similar it really makes Redfall seem like a Vampire flavored Back4Blood.

You nailed why I only did two of the hearts before rolling credits. I ain't got time for that
Deeply saddened by Arkane's fall from grace.
They all moved on. The people behind the games you love from Arkane moved on to games like Weird West... and new studios.
This is the result of their previous works' not getting the recognition and sales they deserve. The suits up top have changed their way of thinking completely.
got that Xbox stench on it sadly
@@linhza501😢
Deathloop was mediocre as fuck so this was 100% expected
Xbox has gotta be on life support now. If starfield doesn't blow everyone away they have lost this generation. It seems like games dont ever release complete anymore.
It seems MS already lost this generation.
Even if starfield does do well ms are still miles behind sony its unbelievable
@@ArielCleirigh yup nintendo and ps5 winning easily
Maybe starfield is good, maybe it is a bloated bland mess but one thing is for sure, it will compete for that so desired number 1 shittiest 2023 optimization spot, no damn doubt about it.
They already lost this generation. They have to hope Starfield is great just to make them respectable. It's insane what's going on with Microsoft.
The background music keeps makin me think the ice cream truck is outside
>Why was this game made?
It always hurts when games like this get released where a quick read of the base, single sheet A4, game design document could have told you that it's bad, or at least not good. And at no point of the development a guy says "Hey, that's not great, we should change this."
This makes me fear for Starfield.
We have got to collectively push for a PREY 2. Let's do this.
As long as it's under MS management, I don't think prey 2 will be as glorious as you think it might be 😞
Braindead
@@LM-nb7rj so sony exclusive as usual.

This reminds me of Generation Zero. It sure has its issues still, but it can be a pretty fun game to chill. It has its fans and I myself enjoy jumping in from time to time just to explore the map and see what I can find, so Redfall might captivate some people as well.
Gen zero has a nice atmosphere. Could have been a lot better but it's good for what it is and the dread u get whilst creeping around scavenging and avoiding murderous robots..fun times
Agreed, im actually enjoying myself with Redfall atm
@@bewarned8236 same here , I think ppls expectations r too high these days for games. I'm also playing on game pass tho so maybe paying that 70 dollar price tag may matter but not for me 😁✨
After tweaking some of the settings and playing it and trying out different weapons it's been cool.
Flying thru games it what ruins it for most. Take time to enjoy the game and not blow thru it and miss shit and judge. This new rat race culture to burn thru and review waters games down. Play it for ur self for a true review and take everything else with a grain of salt
@@luckynumb3rsl3v7n9 I'm certainly taking your comment with a grain of salt/
@@jamesmeldrum4563 u sound but hurt for no reason. I didn't even say enough for you to take any salt let alone a grain bozo. Move around
I remember when I first found your channel. You were blowing up leading up to the release of Fallout 4. I just want to say I'm really proud of you! You're out here paving a path for yourself as one of the most respectable and honest people on this whole scene right now! Keep going Matty!!!
After playing I can say ACG's one comment in his video sums it up the best, "Redfall is a game that makes you wonder where all the effort went". I just started paly deathloop which is pretty good ,and picked up prey again with all the dlc for 9$. this game falls so far short its unbelievable. Why put denuvo in this game? if I pirated this, I would almost feel justified asking for a refund.
Deathloop is made by Arkane Lyon not by Arkane Austin. Not the same team.
The fallout 76 analogy is even more apt in that Deathloop is also Arkane’s Fallout 4. Hardcore fallout fans didn’t really enjoy FO4 but it was a quality game that many enjoyed. Hardcore Arkane fans weren’t massive on Deathloop, but many, like myself, loved it.
Is pray their morrowind then? The most mechanically accomplished game they've ever made, but also their least accessible.
I loved Deathloop and I loved Prey. This, however, sounds exactly like what I hated about B4B.
Hardcore fallout fans = ppl with more than 2 brain cells
I was a hardcore Fallout fan and loved FO4 more than FO3 and as much as NV, but I also loved Fallout Tactics so I was already ok with Fallout being different. Arkane seems to be in a creative crisis both in execution and design. I hope they improve but it will be at least 4 years until the next title from them so now we go back to waiting for a good exclusive release in Starfield (hopefully).
@@RoyConwell F4 wasn't just different. It was confused and dejected. Not a single one of its systems was realised, and it tried to please everyone from a studio that famously has little communication between project designers. Thats what it was, a collection of about 80 different peoples ideas, and no one to stop them. You should never feel like part of a game was made by a different person, when cohesion is makes a world believable in a fictional context. It messed up at the one thing that Bethesda games are defined by.
Omg, Marty almost always sees the positive in games, if he’s this critical, then oof
game journalists should have seen this coming and called it out. no reason a game like this needs to come out from such a major player
Buffy The Vampire Slayer on the OG Xbox is an example of the peak vampire game and it came out in the early 2000s. Xbox Down bad.
Bloodrayne games are great too
One of my favorite reviews ive ever watched. It would have been nice for people to get enjoyment out of this game. But it was really nice hearing some unbiased, straight to the point honesty from a big fan. This channel and others like it deserve way more recognition than these huge companies.
Why does this inevitably happen to every good studio?
Because once they make a good game and it sells well, upper management forces them to work super fast to get the next iteration out. To try and cash in. Ending up with an unfinished mess
Look up the people in charge of stuff for your favorite Arkane games and follow their careers.
Because They're forced to employ people of diversity
The stripped down level is the point. These companies want to raise prices without investing in game development. At the very least they want you to pay for future dlc to flesh things out.
I absolutely love your reviews Matty. You are my favorite reviewer to go to for an utmost unbiased opinion despite your love for Microsoft and the want for the games you review to do good. Keep up the amazing work man. Much love from the Great Plains, Oklahoma.
I've been with Xbox and Microsoft since the first Xbox, then the 360, One X and just last year for my birthday I bought an Series X and I was super excited about it, I'm done now, the lack of a very good exclusives, or a good game in general, and now this, I was hoping Redfall would be a decent game at least, now I don't have any hope for Starfield, I will be giving it a shot but this will be my last year with Xbox, I'm moving to Playstation this December lol, at least there's is good exclusives with Sony.
Yeah, I've been with Xbox since the first one. I stuck through the One and now Series X in hopes they'd get their stuff together. I've been playing some Sony games lately and the difference in quality is staggering.
You don't have to move away from xbox entirely. You can still play on both.
I have a PS5 but haven't got a series x yet because there hasn't been a game release that I think is worthy yet.
enjoy paying 70 dollars.
@@BlazeAlien change your tastes.
@@gondorianslayer4250 Why? I enjoy geting great finished singeplayer sony games every few months. Better than waiting years and years for xbox to finally drop something worthy.
I bought anthem at launch. I bough Battlefield 2042 at launch. Shame on me, but I wasn’t going to buy another game at launch that gave me hype. Came close to getting this one but damn I’m glad I held off.
Man I’ve been playing fallout 76 on pc. Played at launch and it’s so much different now than what it was. Amazing
Arkane has always been one of my favourite developers, so this is really sad to see. This game always felt like an odd-fit for them from the get go though. I hope they go back for another round of Prey and Dishonored next.
I thought it was an odd fit, too, but knowing what Arkane are capable of (absolute masterpieces) I figured they would play to their strengths with it and make something amazing and unique. Shattered to see this is what it is.
They were forced by Zenimax to make a gaas game, just like Fallout 76 was forced upon developers.
Great review. The first 2 minutes where you go over the lay of the land going into this release is excellent, really paints the picture with what people should know before you get into it. Awesome!
Now THIS is a brutally honest review. What a bummer. Dishonored 2 is just so so good on every level...
Thank you for saving my time. I was looking to play this pass my time till SF6 but I guess I’ll try to finish cyberpunk instead. Thank you again.
Thanks for an honest review, I know you were one of this games biggest supporters in terms of it being good, I'm glad you didn't hold back. I had a feeling this game wasn't gonna be good but this is kinda sad
the textures not loading in on the map killed me lmao
The big question is *WHO IS TO BLAME!?*
Microsoft, Bethesda or Arkane...!? All of them? I am confused
Bethesda and Arkane take the lion's share of the blame
@@DjangoFatt I think so too
MICROSOFT! Look at the track record
the boss of Arkane had left Arkans a few years back with the key members of the studio in France and I think we start to see the impact of the departure on top of Microsoft usual doom when buying talented studios...
It's amazing how many people don't understand that it isn't the studio's name that makes the games good, it's the people who work at the studio.
So, so many studios where the entire founding staff have left, and you have people wondering why their quality enters a decline.
Aaaaand it's reviews like this and folks like you that make me glad to continue my "wait and see" approach to curating what games I think are worthwhile to buy. I was really looking forward to this game, but after all the hubbub and now this, I'm definitely opting out. *Sigh* I guess we'll see how Starfield turns out.
