Since half an year I have been playing around with a Prusa I3 3D Printer. In this video I will present you all my experiences and problems I had with 3D Printing and the Prusa I3 kit itself. It should give you an overview of what you can expect from such a cheap kit.

Of all the 3d Printer videos I have watched this is by far my favorite. You didn't bash the printer and left that to the end user to decide. You did give concise, fair warning and a funny way of showing what can and possibly will go wrong with the printer kit for first time users like myself. You are my new favorite CZcamsr and I am now a faithful follower. Thank you for this informative funny video.

3d printing is relatively new on its own. But it's nice to see how much it has improved in only 8 years.

Hey! I NEVER comment on anything but I have to tell you thank you soooooo much! I wanted to get into 3d printing so bad but the price of a printer was stopping me from that. After seeing your video I was able to get into my new favorite hobby! :)
For those thinking of getting this printer DO IT!!! I spent $255 this Christmas and it was well worth it. Many of the problems listed above are gone. In total it took me 11 hours to build and I was about to do it on my day off. DIY is the moto of my life and if you want to learn and grow with this technology this is the printer to do it with!

:)))) It's now 2021 and watching this was soooo funny. Something like "Back to the future". The video is only 6 years old, and this is when you realize how fast the DIY 3D printing scene has advanced in this short time. Please keep this video! Just imagine how people will laugh about this in another 6 (or even 60) years from now.

Great video. I spent 9 hours yesterday building one with a friend and I completely understand the frustration with some questionably designed parts (eg, our X-axis came inverted!). It definitely requires patience and some creativity to deviate from the instructions when necessary, but it's a lot of fun to build. I can't wait to get my own and start printing my own parts.
Please keep up the good work, I'm interested in sharing knowledge on this topic.

Ich schaffe mit meinem Prusa I3 mittlerweile ungefähr 8 von 10 druck versuchen. I've just bought this printer from Aliexpress. £140 delivered. I am getting good results from it.
Yes, it's a bit frustrating to build, the instructions aren't that clear. But now I am creating 0.1mm prints at 40mm/s and getting some lovely quality. I am learning lots about these machines, how to set them up, where not to touch so you don't get burnt etc.
I spent the first week with it practising and making things to improve it. A fan blower that surrounds the hot end, some tool holders and a camera mount so I can view the printer from anywhere.
    £140 well spent.

I own a prusa i3 myself with an aluminium frame. Works fine most of the time. I did run into problems with the linear bearings over time though, but nothing some handy oil couldn't fix. For print adhesion to the bed I used hair spray.
But recently I discovered how to print PLA directly on the glass.
First, I got a sheet of single glass from a photo frame and got it cut to the correct size. Ikea mirrors and double glass didn't work as they have too much thermal isolation.
Then, I made sure the glass was absolutely clean using window cleaner. Don't touch the glass with your bare hands from this point on, as the oils from your skin will cause problems.
Level your z-axis as per normal, making sure the first layer would be firmly squeezed onto the glass.
Now, when printing, put the bed temperature to 80° (less might work too, but this worked for me so I stuck with it).
This will keep the PLA stuck to the glass really well.
After the print is done, let the bed cool for about 10 minutes. Your print should come loose from the glass with relative ease.

I got myself a folgertech 2020 prusa i3 kit for only 290 USD. It is made from 2020 aluminum extrusion and I had no issues at all. It was easy to setup and it prints like a charm. After upgrading to a genuine e3d v6 hotend I think the print quality has reached a point where it is almost as good as a 3D printer which costs over 1000 USD.

As usual, well done! Both entertaining and informative, I enjoyed this very much and thoroughly recommend follow up with the software applications and printer improvements you implement. I have been holding off buying a 3D printer but it seems affordability, maturity and competition is becoming a compelling reason to commit. My only real stumbling block now is how to get enough free time to do justice to such a project.

I used caption tape for the bed surface on my i3. It works great, and a light coat of hair spray before each print makes sure your first layer always sticks.
I recommend doing a bunch of test prints to fine tune your slicing settings. Vary the nozzle temperature, bed temperature, filament feed, layer height, x and y movement speed etc. Till you find a config which works. Took me a while, but I get consistent and pretty good results with mine now.
A good starting point for pla is:
    Bed: 70 degrees c
Nozzle (0.4mm): 180 degrees c for perimeters and 200 degrees c for fill and layer 1
    Layer height: 0.2mm
    Filament feed factor: 1.05
I also use a hot air gun to preheat the bed to my target temperature before starting my print. I find it sticks better, and I don't have to wait for the pcb heater to get it up to temp, which takes ages.

Hello sir! I'm a fairly new subscriber but I want to say that I already love your channel. I have one recommendation that echoes a previous commenter - try blue painters (masking) tape and a layer of glue from a glue stick. I use a custom cut piece of mirror on the print bed, held down by binder clips. The taped glass can usually be used three times before I have to retape. For me this worked wonders. Good luck!

GreatScott! I have the same model and it has taken me a while and I am every so nearly there getting good prints.
My best upgrade has been printing a new X carriage which used 4 bearings rather then the stock 2 (which I found floats).
Unsure on speeds and retractions that you may use but not 100% there but getting results that are pretty tight now even with budget PLA.
There are a couple of sunhokey groups out there, but I got a feeling maybe you have some of this to share with everyone.

The only problem was that there was no material cooling fan which I had to buy from amazon.
    Very good guide :)

I think this or the upgraded model was in the recent PrimeDay sale. WHAT A HEADACHE! There were pieces missing, one of the driver was DOA and the RAMPS board had issues. I had to have Amazon ship me a replacement kit and I harvested parts from it until I got it all working right!
Upside, I now know how to work on this with my eyes closed and I already know what parts I need to print to fix some of the issues, Y belt tensioner anyone!?

Lol I completely agree with you, there are way too many variables. The humidity on the filament can also screw with your prints. I learned that after 2 yrs of owning a 3d printer lol.

Printrbot simple metal is an excellent starting point I think. You get a quality support, excellent support, an amazing warranty, they are a US company and the prints look excellent. They can be upgraded to print nylon, ninja flex and abs. I've upgraded since then but It is still excellent.
