When I was a teenager in the 90s my dad managed a shop with a 3D Systems SLA machine that cost over $1M. It was mesmerizing. I loved hanging out there and sometimes got to earn a little money finishing parts that had to have support structure removed, or washing off the excess resin, etc. All parts got baked in an industrial UV oven after cleaning and finishing to finalize the cure. The resin was $600/gallon and the anhydrous alcohol wasn't exactly cheap, either. Replacement lasers were somewhere in the five figure range, plus labor. It blows me away that nearly the same quality can now be produced by a desktop machine for under $2K.
I used to own one of those, sadly I sold it
Just took 30 years...
I have a 2D Printer that can print mulitcolored things!
Asdffghjkl Lkjhgfdsa
My printer uses laser just like GreatScott's one... but 2D like yours 😂
Barnabás Kiglics quite good isnt it ?
I have a 1D printer that can fit in a shirt pocket.
nice :D :D
well i have a 4D printer somewhere... i can't find it though.
I love how honest you were throughout the whole video
I was waiting for Scott's Sunday video :) Good job, as usual!
The translucent resins are great for making custom light pipes! With how often you make your own custom control board housings, making light-pipes to light up the buttons would be a perfect use for it.
the resolution is absolutely amazing!!! the boat looks badass
dude your voice is so pleasant to listen to
I love your videos. You gave me the courage to actually draw my own PCB. I'm no engineer and I know very little about electronics but your Videos and Google helped me. First PCB is on the way! Thank you!
That looks amazing!
As always keep up the great videos!!
great review, nice camera work and editing.
I have always been fond of 3D printers. Starting with the normal FDM printers and now the SLA printers. Good video.
Very cool printer! Hope to see you use it in your future projects.
SLA 3D printers are incredible. I've been using a Nobel 1.0a for the last few months, and being able to print extremely detailed objects like table-top miniatures and jewelry is amazing. Glad to see more and more companies are getting into the SLA market!
it looks amazing, this stuff is going places in a couple of years!
nice video! it is always cool to see new 3d priting technologies being invented and then it is a none-scam kickstarter aswell - how amazing! :)
Very well made and edited video, thanks! Sir, You are a Pro!
this is the best DIY electronics channel as per me!
Good stuff! Just enough detail to cover the important parts without getting bogged down in minutiae. I particularly liked the assembly information - I'm nervous about building a kit (my first printer was a prebuilt), but this looks like something I could confidently assemble myself.
awesome video keep it up scott
Wow thats amazing. Its very cool to see that SLA Printers are now available as kit's ☺️. I think i will buy one in some years but still stick to my FDM Printer.
Nice, 3D printer projects are awesome. Keep up the good work
Great video, nice detailed explanation of setup process
amazing video once again!!
awesome as always.
Keep it up.
Great video as always!! :)
Looks like the time to print my dream joypad has come.
Oh fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing!!! This video may have convinced me to get a Moai. I'm kind of an idiot when it comes to assembling hardware, but I think I can handle this now.
love your videos you are the best!!
Yeah, I love your videos!! Keep up the good work an dont stop producing these videos!!!!!!!
please produce more 3d printing videos (or sla videos like this one) !!!!!!!!
Nice prinduur with awesome lasuuur. What a great manufactuuur! :)
That is a great review!
Hi Scott, can you comment on cost to print per gram of the two printer technologies?
Not yet. But I noted it for a future video.
FDM is better for large parts which SLA is great for small detailed parts
Nice review man, thanks for the content :)
+Grant Fielder You're welcome ;-)
Hello, I have request can you make Multistage CoilGun with Ultracaps. Please THANK YOU
GreatScott! can you paint these prints
comparing moai to your other printer, which do you think is more practical to use in terms of cost of production and quality of output?
Not sure about the cost yet. But I think the material for the delta printer is a lot cheaper. The SLA prints however have a much higher quality.
should he user be concerned with his health when operating moai? I mean aside from the laser, are there any other things to watch out for?
Dennis Padul the resins that SLA and DLP printers use is quite nasty stuff on top of being pretty expensive, you don't want any of it touching your skin and it often has a very strong, acrid odor
So I guess its higher detailed output is the only advantage of the moai.
Dennis Padul It's also much quieter and can print some models with steep or oddly shaped overhangs that can't be printed on FDM machines like the Delta he has
Stumbling across 5 years later, makes me realize how much better our 3d printers have become...💜
Also; that poor ring look likes like it had very roughly adjusted print settings 😁
I always watch your videos bass boosted. BTW, nice video.
Thanks ;-)
Looks awesome. I use a Cartesian Printer, but really want an SLA for future videos.
Great Scott, your videos are fantastic, could you put the link where you bought the protective glasses for the laser?
Really interesting!
Really enjoyed your review. Have you tried other resins like Makerjuice waxcast or any other castable resin?
I'm waiting for my first 3D printer, a Prusa i3, to arrive. Really looking forward to experiment with this technology. :)
@GreatScott!
you may should use a part cooling fan for your delta to get a better comparison
This is sooooo Awesome!!
This is awesome!
Hi scott can you go deep dive into electronics and galvo control ?
I watched a video about the Carbon M1 yesterday. Within 10 min, I figured out what they were doing. I'm so glad someone else knows the supposed secret process.
KASA lol. Did you see the word supposed before the word secret? Go back to the third grade and learn how to read.
KASA go watch the interview that Carbon M1 did with the channel called Tested. He sits there with a smug bullshit look on his face talking about his super cool process that no one knows.
KASA he says that they work at the intersection of hardware, software, and chemistry. They're controlling the amount of oxygen the same way that gasoline manufactures control lead and nitrogen in gasoline. It's pretty basic, and is a supposed secret.
Love this printer, i need one! :D
thanks for the review. TWo questions. First is to ask what the quality of the galvos and drivers ie 20KPPS and second, is there an fTheta lens in there somewhere to address aberrations at the extremes of the build area? Thanks for the review
great scott great
Interesting 3d printer!
You should do a video about the conductive properties of graphene 3D filament.
you could make some spooky decorations with that and lighting
You should install a part cooling fan on your delta printer. It greatly improves pla prints.
seen one these on fb 3x printing group earlier. looks interesting.
Neat looking printer
The quality of these SLA printers is beyond phenomenal. I wish I had the money to afford one of these. =T
So this printer doesn't require standoff's like a conventional 3D printer does when making something mid-air?
Support material is still required sometimes. But the rules are a bit different.
GreatScott! Ok! Because removing that suport material tends to be rather labor intensive. So much in fact that I'd rather make something with my hands instead of printing it... maybe a good idea for a new video :)
Nice vid! What do you do with the resin after the print? How to clean the reservoir?
Up until now I left the resin in there.
Awesome!!
Good video.
hey GreatScott. can you do a laser galvanometer tutorial. I have so many ideas for them but cant figure out how to use them. Thanks!
Are there any labels on the galvanometers? This seems to be a nice set of galvos at a reasonable price and I wonder if it's possible to buy them on the internet without the rest of the printer...
Hello! Can you do a video showing how to do a Class D amplifier? Thanks.
Hi.gr8 presentation.
Did you use anything as a media at aluminium platform?
I also have and use 3d printer. In my case i need to apply a small amount of uv glue at aluminium so that print can stick and grow.
really cool😉👍👍
Can you make a basics video abouth AUDRINO flight controler, and how to use it.
Can we get a workshop tour?
Ever thought of trying to build your own one of these? It honestly doesn't look _too_ difficult to make one. Would be a bit expensive, but probably cheaper than buying a fully built one.
Interesting video
Would white spirit do as a replacement for the isopropyl? Or is there something relatively common that you could recommend please?
Thanks for sharing :-)
Try getting a print cooling fan for the FDM printer, print results will really improve.
plz next video about spot velder or metal lathe
hey, you should put a vent on the delta printer. it will really improve your printing quality
Last time I used Laser goggles, I couldn't see the laser!
thats what they are for..
plz reply SCOTT that would make my day
sla printers look like are the saint graal of diy action figures and RPG/table games piece creators
Wow the vat tilts just like the prusa sl1 alot of companies will adopt this eventualy
SLA is definitely the way to go.
Nice
So when youre finished with the printing do you just leave the resin in that container or do you have to store it somewhere?
Great Scott Que tal algo con enconders?
-Espero tu respuesta!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you have to readjust the print bed like you normally would on a 3D printer, Or does it automatically level? SLA printing is so interesting!
You have to adjust it manually. But ever since I got the laser working, I did not readjust the bed. It just works.
Good vid
Hey Scott, the brittleness of the said material is because you didn't harden it in a UV bath (any moderately powerful UV light will harden it after about 50 minutes)
how warm does this resin get during printing? is there any worry of warping during thicker prints?
Fluid printing is definitely the future of 3D printing! I had thought it would be far more dangerous and toxic then what the video creator shown. Also that print appeared to have at least x10 the level of detail, not just the twice suggested by it's layer height.
If a company makes this more ready-built, adds a filtration system to reduce vapors, and gets the price point around the right range, I might get one of these. It looks utterly indispensable for lost-wax jewelry casting and general mold making. It would work fine for statues and figurines, maybe less well for physical objects you actually handle. Maybe somebody will cook up better chemicals in the future? All of the magic really happens in the goo in the tray.
Why no cooling fan on your delta? Would help a lot with that print.
Delta printers really benefit from having soft silicone bumpers below their towers. They absorb shock from quick movements and basically silence the driving motors.
the results is excellent, but i prefer fdm printing. a well tuned fdm printing can make a really good result and with so many material to choose from. i wonder what would you do with left-over resin after printing? would contamination with air ruined the resin?
Could you try printing the ring without supports?
that was nice
It looks verry cool!
Does anyone know how much it will cost in the end?
can you give me a link from where I can buy it
can you make a video on review on windows 10 single board computer
Do you need a good looking print or an efficient print?
You should make a video about how to make custom arduino shields(for aduino uno)!
so if i wanted to make gears i would have to go with pla and abs?
You forgot to blow the whistle :)
CB his wife did it quietly in the before before they shot the video.
He really shoulder, using any resin print as a whistle is bad because just about every resin is highly toxic and even after cleaning it thoroughly it can still be very dangerous to put the resin in your mouth. Dont forget that resin is made out of oil.
so loud
