    When I was a teenager in the 90s my dad managed a shop with a 3D Systems SLA machine that cost over $1M. It was mesmerizing. I loved hanging out there and sometimes got to earn a little money finishing parts that had to have support structure removed, or washing off the excess resin, etc. All parts got baked in an industrial UV oven after cleaning and finishing to finalize the cure. The resin was $600/gallon and the anhydrous alcohol wasn't exactly cheap, either. Replacement lasers were somewhere in the five figure range, plus labor. It blows me away that nearly the same quality can now be produced by a desktop machine for under $2K.

    The translucent resins are great for making custom light pipes! With how often you make your own custom control board housings, making light-pipes to light up the buttons would be a perfect use for it.

    comparing moai to your other printer, which do you think is more practical to use in terms of cost of production and quality of output?

    • @greatscottlab
      @greatscottlab  Před 7 lety +21

      Not sure about the cost yet. But I think the material for the delta printer is a lot cheaper. The SLA prints however have a much higher quality.

    • @DennisPadul
      @DennisPadul Před 7 lety +1

      should he user be concerned with his health when operating moai? I mean aside from the laser, are there any other things to watch out for?

    • @bnn9912
      @bnn9912 Před 7 lety +1

      Dennis Padul the resins that SLA and DLP printers use is quite nasty stuff on top of being pretty expensive, you don't want any of it touching your skin and it often has a very strong, acrid odor

    • @DennisPadul
      @DennisPadul Před 7 lety

      So I guess its higher detailed output is the only advantage of the moai.

    • @bnn9912
      @bnn9912 Před 7 lety

      Dennis Padul It's also much quieter and can print some models with steep or oddly shaped overhangs that can't be printed on FDM machines like the Delta he has

      KASA he says that they work at the intersection of hardware, software, and chemistry. They're controlling the amount of oxygen the same way that gasoline manufactures control lead and nitrogen in gasoline. It's pretty basic, and is a supposed secret.

  • @MaxSMoke777
    @MaxSMoke777 Před 7 lety +1

    Fluid printing is definitely the future of 3D printing! I had thought it would be far more dangerous and toxic then what the video creator shown. Also that print appeared to have at least x10 the level of detail, not just the twice suggested by it's layer height.
    If a company makes this more ready-built, adds a filtration system to reduce vapors, and gets the price point around the right range, I might get one of these. It looks utterly indispensable for lost-wax jewelry casting and general mold making. It would work fine for statues and figurines, maybe less well for physical objects you actually handle. Maybe somebody will cook up better chemicals in the future? All of the magic really happens in the goo in the tray.
