Have You Met a Hagfish? It’s About Slime | Deep Look

- What keeps the boneless, jawless hagfish thriving after more than 300 million years? SLIME. The goop it exudes - a mix of mucus and special protein cells- expands to 10,000 times its original volume in less than half a second, potentially clogging the gills of competitors.

DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
---+ What happens when a predator bites into a hagfish?
That predator will get a mouthful of slime! When threatened, the hagfish releases slime from pores that run alongside its body. That slime swells to more than a liter in less than half a second.
---+ Why does a hagfish have loose, baggy skin?
The hagfish's loose skin is a first line of defense. Its vital organs move out of harm's way inside of that baggie onesie, allowing the hagfish time to release slime.

#hagfish #slime #deeplook - Věda a technologie
The fact that there is still no movie about Giant Hagfishes attacking students during Spring Break means that people need to learn more from creatures of this world.
Quick, get your screenplay together. :)
Actually, I think some things should be kept hidden from certain people
When I saw its mouth I remembered an appropriate movie: Teeth (2007)
Pretty sure that the Japanese have something close in that regard.
Especially with the teeth it reminded me of the small aliens from Dreamcatcher.
When the hagfish said "It's slimin' time" and proceeded to slime all over its competitors, all the other people in the living room felt that. Truly one of the fishes of all time.
Just like morbius 🤨
Producer for the episode here! I felt the slime IRL and loved it! Once itʻs off you it leaves no film. Totally fascinating stuff!!!
basically the most animal ever
You are not funny.
I started to cry when the hagfish said “It’s slimin’ time.” It was so moving.
The fact that they are the only known living animals that have a skull but no vertebral column is almost as fascinating as the slime production
it’s also funny how they’re just as much of a fish as we are a reptile. they are so distantly related to every other fish but also not quite far enough to be a different thing entirely
@@vbgvbg1133 If a fish is defined as a Vertebrate that never left the water during its evolution, the hagfish is a fish.
@@KP3droflxp taxonomically speaking, they are in a gray area
@@vbgvbg1133 That depends on the definition, a common one is: "Chordate with a neural crest, a brain, a skull and a multi-layered epidermis." The hagfish ticks all those boxes so unless theres a different definition, it's definitely a fish (In the previously defined sense, "fish" is paraphyletic anyway. But I'm curious to hear a definition that doesn't include hagfish but still includes lampreys in a useful way.
@@KP3droflxp There's this thing called "genetics" you might wanna look up
Definitely high on my list of animals that fascinate and awe me and I want *nowhere near me* .
Fair.
Hagfish is a pretty demeaning name for such a cool creature. I think they're absolutely lovely.
THIS is why you are a Deep Peep!
Truly beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Hagfish sounds like a badge of honour to me. First heard about it in The Big Bang Theory after Sheldon broke up with Amy and they went to the aquarium as friends.
It's pretty spot on if anything
@@KQEDDeepLook Since I had the hagfish confused with them (since they look similar), can you do a video on lampreys? They're pretty cool, too.
Love how the shark has a couple gag reflexes after tasting this nightmare.
The shark definitely got a mouthful.
That shark missed the 300 million-year memo.
"Slimy cinnamon rolls" is a sentence i never want to hear ever again
Agnathans (jawless fish) will always be one of my favorite animal groups for just how darn alien they are. From the modern hagfish and lampreys to the many, many varieties that existed wayy back in time millions of years ago, they are very enigmatic animals and i love them all.
We love them too!
I always learn from deep look and its very entertaining!
Producer here - me toooo! (learning and entertained from making these pieces)! Thanks for watching!
Always have something to learn from Deep Look 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Glad to hear it Alan!
There are so many hagfish videos on CZcams, but this is literally the ONLY one I’ve seen that has specific educational information about the hagfish, like where is the slime excreted from and how does the hagfish not get caught in it’s own slime! You’d think that would be pretty important information when making an educational video about a specific animal! So thank you for actually giving us proper hagfish information!!👍
"truth is often stranger than fiction" but on a serious note : I appreciate these videos and especially the explanations on how these biological mechanisms work. I love biomimicry so these help a lot.
Biomimicry is awesome! When they were explaining how their protein threads unspool without untangling the moment they hit seawater, I wondered if there were any benefits that could come from studying these awesome creatures!
Oh so that's how they don't run out of nutrients producing slime. I was under the impression they produced that much constantly and there nutrient cost for slime was much higher. That makes a lot more sense now.
Producer for the episode here. Same re nutrient cost! But I initially thought they would only be able to slime every so often because they were putting out so much fluid but it really is such a small amount that they excrete compared to the total volume. The ocean water is a huge component of the slimeʻs volume!
Ooh okay so it's the ocean water that supplements most of the cost. Being surrounded by salty water is useful for producing outside substances that are made of mostly water. Useful exploitation of a infinite resource.
@@carto4028 YES! Well put.
how cute! their teeth remind me of those weird "all of my teeth are exploding out of my face" nightmares, but they wear them well 🪱
i'm just delighted whenever you guys drop a new video! i always learn something new & come away with a newfound appreciation for the critters you cover. much love 💜💜💜
Thank you so much!
I remember seeing a video of fishermen catching some hagfish, and as they struggled to pull them out the net and handle them, the entire boat filled with slime before they had time to chuck them all overboard
Thank you very much for answering a decades long mystery for me by pointing out the anatomy of their heads. The one huge nostril plus the radula jaws has baffled me since I was a kid and I couldn't figure out if both face holes were part of the mouth or what. I've been fascinated by this fish all my life and until now so very little appreciation for this incredible living fossil. ❤
I remember calling them Snotpreys in a dream as kid, dunno why, guess I was explaining things somehow. One of those weird summer nights where dream so vividly from the heat.
Producer for the episode here. We heard some good names for hagfish. My favorite was snot snakes.
Snotpreys sounds like a new Pokemon in the making 😁👌
There's always something great from Deep Look!
Thanks Kim!
I remember being fascinated by footage from Planet Earth showing them tying themselves in knots to get better leverage in taking chunks out of a whale fall! Talk about having a monopoly on a biological niche.
Producer for the episode here! The knotting is fascinating to watch!!!
@@mimischiffman626hey! can you point me in the direction of the music? especially the creepy opening track? my granddaughter loves it.. we enjoy this video together
A creature that controls slime? That sounds so intriguing in the first place , then add nightmarish teeth and cute barbels and you got yourself a very bizzarre creature, but for you and us deep peeps bizzarre creatures are new opportunities to learn something obscure but intriguing at the same time.
The big nostril up front makes them look kinda like pig-snake-fish hybrids to me!
This felt really weird but fascinating at the same time.
Imagine getting told that there's a fish in the sea for you, and you're paired with the Hagfish.
Mmmm... Slimey.
Indeed, that would be a challenging familiar.
That's a creepy creature, need a new video on banana slug !!
Ngl, kinda like that this video got released on my birthday. I find Hagfish to be really fascinating creatures! Keep being awesome, Deep Look!
I love the dramatic music in the background.
What a fun episode and such excellent footage!!! AH! We love these slimy guys and their loose skin pajamas!
After watching this, I'm addicted to slime! Thank's deep look for making yet another addicting video.
You are most welcome!
Woah what a creature 🤯 Thanks for highlighting all their cool characteristics Deep Look
Always been fascinated by this creature.
What an incredible creature! Absolute fan now
Once again - wonderful video Deep Look; but maybe not while I'm eating my breakfast- ha! Thanks 👍
That shark knows how I feel trying to eat natto... it just aint meant to be haha
I wrote a poem for hagfish:
I may be a fish
But you won’t see me on a dish
On command I’ll ooze out slime
I’m uncatchable it should be a crime
My nose is big but my mouth is bigger
I’ll sniff out death and wriggle with vigour
I enjoy the cuisine of the dead
Down below on the ocean bed
I love my job, it’s a thankless one
Keeping the ocean floor clean is lots of fun
That's my defense too, I also unleash a torrent of slime when I'm scared
Ok I actually find them to be quite cute.
Another great video from the engaging voice to the animal facts to the awesome shots to all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes 👏 👏 👏
Thank you for sharing this video!🤗
Thanks for watching!
Oh, the blue world , how wonderful and creative you are ! Never gets bored
What a gross yet fascinating creature! Hagfish are so cool
It reminds me of another thing that has baggy skin, secretes slime, veiny patterns on its skin and has a single "nostril" at the front... 🤭

Good Morning!
@@KQEDDeepLook Good Morning to you too!
FINALLY A DEEP LOOK HAGFISH VIDEO!!!!! Btw for any fellow hagfish enjoyers out there, I highly recommend listening to the hagfish episode from the podcast ologies, it’s very interesting
Brilliant narration.
Man, what a bad way to go out it’d be if a unwitting predator tries to eat one. Like choking to death on the mucus if they tried to swallow them.
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Oh wow ive never seen their jaws before! So bizarre, they dont even look like fish
Might use this for a dnd campaign
I cant believe Im saying this but I think the hagfish is one of my favorite creatures anywhere 😐
Hagfish : why I avoid the bottom of the Marianas Trench.
I've never heard of that creature (only once in your shorts) it's pretty interesting
I love these guys so much!
I though the hole in the face is a mouth and think " huh, look like thin catfish with little mouth. this creator not looking bad at all " until see the fangs under " ok I take it back . this is the horrify thing that I ever see "
About time!!!!! I love it! ❤️
I didn't know this, thank you for the educational video
Producer for the episode here: Thank you for watching!!!
Hi Martha I hope my comment didn't sound as a form of privacy invasion your comment tells of a wonderful woman with a beautiful heart which led me to comment I don't normally write in the comment section but I think you deserve this compliment. If you don’t mind can we be friends? Thanks God bless you….🌹🌹
@David-ky3lr Thank you, of course we can be friends
I love the commentary!
"Skin like a baggy onesie"

Yes, that is AMAZING snot.
Again thank u for this education on things i haven't even heard of...Wow. Yall tell me why when the teeth was shown it looked like that alien from Dream Catcher 😂. Everyone please stay safe and blessed much love from San Antonio
Finally deeplook uploaded
They upload once a month btw

Oh good you are still here! I liked that
No bones at all? Not even cartilage? Wouldn't that make them invertebrates?
They have cartilage "spines" and skulls.
In addition to the cartilaginous skull and notochord, they might have rudimentary vertebrae structures. It looks like it's an open question whether to classify them as vertebrates or not - they're in the same group as all the other vertebrates though (Craniata).
You can eat them, y'know. They're quite tasty. Koreans eat them all the time but I don't know for other countries. If you happened to be in South Korea, definitely worth a try.
What does the meat taste and feel like?
@@malinasworld pretty flavorless by itself, which is why all are sold marinaded. imagine eel but the flesh is far more firm and juicy. it's great.
There was a car crash in oregon in 2017 where a bunch of hagfish and their slime spilled onto the road.
omggg they’re like little long sneks but with cuter faces amshshshehshe SO CUTE
Producer for the episode here. I am so with you. I think theyʻre lovely. It was so great working with them!
The narration is interesting as if the Hagfish is introducing itself in rather an intimate mamner 😂. Loved the voice though, you 'Slimed' it 🙌
Nice video! Also wow 39 seconds ago, im not used to being early..
Welcome back!
OMG new deep look!!!!!!!!!!
Well I did need this today man how did Deep Look know???
We have our sources!
@@KQEDDeepLook I knew it!!
YOU'RE BUGGING ME ARENT YOU?!?!
no I don't wanna know
I knew it!!!
ok just keep it down in there
The fact that it kept its form for over 3 million years simply means that hagfish are the perfect being
She said 300,000,000 years, that only 300 times more ridiculous.
Not 3 million. 300 million.
Narrating top notch!
That's Laura Klivans for you!
Learned a lot and want to know more.
3:04 straight out of my nightmares
This is so interesting!! I think their little faces are cute
We agree, Heather!
Imagine those slime ASMR videos but they just pull out a hagfish and start playing with its slime
Incredible!
This was the most unsettling thing I've seen on the internet
how much mucus does this thing produce? is it an infinite amount or does it run out after a while
I have loved hagfish since I was little for many reasons, most recent of which being that they look like miniature versions of Number Seven from the TV show Raised by Wolves !!!! #RenewRaisedByWolves #SaveRaisedByWolves
Very nice video 👍❤
"you can escape from sharks, but not from me food" hooman said
This is going to be the next fave serum
Producer for the episode here. You know the slime just rolls right off your skin and leaves no trace. I almost felt like it stripped moisture from my hands after I held it.
this vid was short but i liked it!!!!!!!!
Stress-free life for them!
How about the cost for secretion materially & quantitatively? Have scientists discovered in it something useful?
A creature of such a long, long history, how amazing it is!
You guys really got me with 2:04
pls do one video on bobbit worms
Kinda reminds me of how spiders can also produce a gigantic amount of web.
Amazing! Are their teeths not bonny?
Yes!! I love hagfish!!
Out of sheer curiosity, can the slime be collected, sold, and used as uhh, lotion for you know what? Looks pretty viscous.
Amazing creatures it would be cool to know how they reproduce
They look like a puppet in a horror movie I love them so much
i always wondering, where the slimes come from, but now i know. . what an interesting creature 😯
It's slimin time!
Great video!
But I wonder how a certain youtuber named ze frank would have voiced it...
Better than mace. If you could bottle that but make it swell up on contact with air, you'd make a fortune.
Best content ever
2:04 you'll never see it the same way again
If you bring a haggle fish to a farmers market you get great deals but really slimy groceries
Hagfish: i make good slime
Fishes: oh nice. What is it made of?
Hagfish: **fff**
