  • Somerset Hills Country Club in Bernardsville, NJ, is a stunning example of A.W. Tillinghast's legendary golf course design. It is my favorite American golf course, I have played. Since its opening in 1918, this Tillinghast masterpiece has retained its classic charm with almost no significant alterations.
One of the unique aspects of Somerset Hills is its dual personality. The front nine is reminiscent of links-style courses, offering expansive views and undulating fairways. As you navigate this part of the course, you'll encounter challenging greens guarded by strategically placed bunkers. The back nine, in contrast, takes you through dense woodlands with more dramatic elevations. It's a different challenge altogether, requiring precision and strategy to avoid the trees and slopes.
What makes Somerset Hills truly special is its balance between difficulty and playability. It isn't designed to trick players or overwhelm them with extreme length. Instead, it rewards skillful shots and punishes errant ones, making it both challenging and enjoyable. The staff and caddies contribute to the welcoming atmosphere, providing excellent service and making you feel at home.
Somerset Hills is a course I always look forward to playing when I get the chance, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a classic yet rewarding golfing experience.
