Welcome back, everyone! I'm excited to share this Project Mini Dragon update with you all! As you can see, the skinks are doing really well for the most part (except for the unfortunate news regarding one red-eyed baby...) Remember to answer today's Question of the Day. Thank you so much for watching! For more information on how to unlock fun perks, chat with me directly and support this project, check: www.patreon.com/Reptiliatus

I'm sorry about the baby, Dayan. I wonder if the baby was injured because it had an insect and mom or dad tried to take it; like in the clip you showed. With as meticulous as you are with your care, I know it must have been hard for you. I don't keep any reptiles, but watching my favorite CZcamsrs, you included, has helped me overcome my fears of the scaled friends on our planet.

I noticed how misunderstood Tokay geckos are after getting my own. I love the way they lick each others snouts as a way to say ''hello'' and how caring they are of their young. I always hang out with a tokay on my shoulder while Im either working from home or doing chores and they also lick my finger or face whenever I take them out or talk to them.
They're honestly my favorite and I'm so glad I came across your channel a couple of years back which motivated me to get into tokay geckos myself!

I really hope that you don't blame yourself for the baby who passed. You've been successfully keeping the young with their parents for so long, it genuinely looks like a tragic one-off.
Maybe because they're first time parents in captivity they hadn't got the idea that not every quick little movement in their space is prey and, as you said, an accident happened. You couldn't have foreseen this, though, and you're doing such wonderful work with the hobby!

I'm so sorry that you had such a terrible surprise... I agree that it's not your fault. You have so much to be proud of as well!
I cohab 1.1 pair of crested geckos and I recently noticed a unique behaviour for the 2nd time in row. When the female is looking to lay, the male stays with her on the ground. He does not interfere but just stays within a foot of her - usually near the lay box that she ends up testing but not using lol. The human in me wants to think he is supporting or protecting her (I'm not going to test that), but maybe they connect more as mates than we give them credit for.

For the QOTD: I have a sibling pair of captive bred marbled salamanders and I have been surprised by the difference in their personalities. I expected them to hide most of the time, but one of them is pretty bold. He will come out when he thinks it's time for a feeding and will eat from tongs like a champ. The other one is definitely more shy. They are adorable!

I'm really sorry for the baby's loss ...
Something I've learned with my old cats, I have 2 who are very old, 15 and 19, my 19 years old have only 3 legs, she miss the one on her front left.
Yes cats are good jumpers, when they're older they still search to jump on things, but with help, so instead of going to the desk in one go, they use your chair or just don't go on it if they can't make it on multiple jump. I even have a little Ikea step for the bed and one of the cat tree because it is to high.
So if you're cat is over 10 and jump less on things it's probably not because they doesn't like it anymore but they just can't in one go anymore. ❤
Specially if they have a limb missing or they have arthritis like my 15 one have 😅

I own two leopard geckos; one was bought from a petstore and one was bred from an actual breeder. The petstore gecko, who's now about 12yrs old, is substantially smaller with far more angular shapes to her body (she's been housed and fed properly her whole life outside of the store) while my other gecko - only about 6 now - is much more of the typical healthy Leo size and proportions. Thought it was neat to see the differences from petstore bred geckos and correctly bred geckos

So I bought mine adult pair in 2018 (so they are at least from 2015, or 2014 (younger could be possible).)
They are still going strong. But the number of offspring has gone down the last 2 years to 2 eggs per year, maybe 3.
So at the age of 10y they doing still great.
I think the general idea of lifespan is 18 to 20 years (at this moment). So we still have some more time to enjoy them.

I had an interesting moment with my crested geckos. After watching them hunt some crickets I gave them, I noticed that their pupils would elongate only in the forward direction, rather than on both sides, when they zoned in on prey. It makes me wonder if that’s how they deal with having immobile eye on the side of their heads. Maybe that’s how they gain a moment of better binocular vision.

Sorry about the poor baby. ☹️❤ Something special with my animals: people are always claiming that cats are indifferent and aloof but cats are actually intensely social and caring little beings. My boys enthusiastically greet me when I come home from work (and their greeting is notably different when they know that I have been at work rather than when I am gone on the weekend!);They will also start fussing around bedtime, especially my older boy, and they always escort me to my bedroom at which they immediately snuggle up and fall asleep with me (which is just so painfully sweet.) They also groom each other, cuddle and play together, and they will request that I come pet or play with them with meowing. They are *extremely* social and communicative! It's honestly very easy to communicate with them and understand what exactly the little dudes want or need at any one time. ❤
(And because I love them so much of course I keep them INDOORS. The *only* time that they are *ever* allowed outside is when they are let out into their escape-and-predator-proof catio to get fresh air sniffs. The average lifespan of an indoor cat is actually vastly longer than cats who are allowed outside and I think that the statistics speak for themselves: indoor cats live 12-16 years with 20+ years being not unheard of - outdoor cats? ⚠️Just 2-5 years.⚠️ They literally die before they are even fully physically mature as larger cats can take up to five years to fully physically mature. 😬 I feel like these stats *alone* should be enough for people to do the right thing and keep their kitties inside but yeah, also if my cats are indoors they're also not preying on things that they shouldn't like endangered birds or imperilled mammals like bilbies or contributing to the endangerment of actual wildcats like the Scottish Wildcat which is seriously genetically threatened by interbreeding with house cats because these rare kitties can't find their own kind. People really need to keep their house cats inside and spay/neuter them! It's so important for our shared planet and for their own safety!)
Yeah I'm pretty passionate about my cats.😅
More exotic! So I also keep a nano reef aquarium and two of my favourite inhabitants are my mated pair of Amphiprion ocellaris clownfish ('nemo' fish,) Moby and Cousteau. While other keepers complain about their clownfish nipping them, my little pair are actually very gentle and sweet little fish, swimming curiously around my hand whenever I am working on stuff in their home and always swimming right up to the glass when I come over to greet me. Since they can live 15+ years they're serious pets and I am very committed to them!❤ Moby was notably depressed before I introduced Cousteau; now she's happy as a clam and they do everything together. (In clownfish pairings the bigger fish genderbends into a girl, so Moby, who was a boy when I got him, is now a lady while Coustaeu is still a boy and will likely always be a boy unless Moby dies first and I have to introduce a new ocellaris clownfish to be Cousteau's mate, then he'll become a girl just like Moby has done because he would be the bigger fish since this species is readily bred in captivity.) Also: they're extremely adorable!❤

Crocodile skinks are highly social animals that live together and care for their young. You have even shown in the past how the parents tolerate their young feeding from something that they caught. This is important because it actually is one step before actively feeding the young. I don’t believe that they attacked it. Either the wood fell on it or they tried to consume it after death or both things. Skinks in general are more or less omnivorous, and they will eat a lot of non-moving objects as well. Many social mammals will eat dead conspecifics, why not them. I don’t specifically remember something uniquely interesting from my own animals, because there are many. I remember the termite hill geckos that I had in the past were laying their eggs in the same location every time.

So sad that the baby did not make it. That is life though. You can only do so much. I can't wait to see what happens with the next egg though. Onward and upward! 😊 Since there is not a lot of info on these guys, you should make a care sheet for people about what you have learned.

Best moment ever was our little troubled lake chapala garter snake. Came from a bad breeder. I got 3 originally, first one didn’t survive the night. One was not eating third was ok. Friend got all the breeders other snakes. So I took 2 more from her. The non eater was forced fed for months. She was quite a bit smaller than the others. We had her with the smallest of the 3 together and the other two. When she reached a good weight, we housed them all together. 2 weeks later, she started eating on her own. Now she doubled in size and is feisty. They are fun to watch and I’m so glad we didn’t gave up on the little one.

My baby argentine boa (about 5 months old) for the first time in the 2 months I've had her investigated my face during a handling session, and wanted to crawl around on my head through my hair. She's getting more confident every handling session, and I think she's going to be sweet enough to be an animal ambassador/educational animal when she grows up

Don't feel lame! It's not your fault what happened. You do such a great job caring for them while not disturbing them too much since they are very private. I wonder if the baby startled an adult and got kind of snapped at so to speak.

Hey mate. Ive been working on a paludarium last month. It took me a week to get done with. The paludarium is a home for a future crocodile skink. I live in Denmark, and I can’t find any… I’ve been looking everywhere and I’ve contacted some people that know a whole lot about the reptile community in Denmark… All i wish for is just getting a mini dragon to my beautiful enclosure

Great AND terrible news, with life comes death unfortunately, so sad, but I’m so grateful they’re breeding for you. 😢❤
QOTD: my special observation is finding out hand training my bearded dragons became quicker when I softly stroked their head and body, they love the petting and it seems to calm them. As long as I stay away from the tickly spots! Lol they’re seemingly more snuggly now, which you wouldn’t expect from reptiles.

Things happen in every hobby. Dogs, cats, reptiles, inverts. I only currently have a desert box turtle. She laid three eggs.... One each of the first three years I had her. Then she ate them. So I'm just assuming she had retained from her previous owner. But even in mammals things happen.

I rescue and relocate frogs from the new build construction sites I do underground plumbing in. If they don’t get pulled out they’ll get concrete poured over them. I find many injured ones and if I feel they have a shot at life I’ll do a wildlife turn in at a vet that’s near me. Long story short I loose many of them. I know our situations are different but the feeling is the same. Sucks to loose animals your working with and trying to save, breed, etc. your doing awesome work man and I love your videos. Keep at it! :)

I highly agree that the healthies babies are rised by their parents.
I haven't had the experience of parental attacks. But I have found a dead baby left or right. It seems like other factors are in play.

Also QOTD: how quickly a reptile can pick up on routine. My blue tongue skink comes and scratches at her tank door at 3pm daily to come out an explore while I'm working from home. You could set your watch by her!

I’ve also had babies killed by the parents they have never eaten them ether but it always seemed to happen when they are really young and small I’ve never had it happen to any of the older babies. It’s happened twice so far and 5 other babies grew up just fine. That’s with my oldest pair and other pair thankfully hasn’t happened with them. Accidents happen sorry for the bad news bud. 🙋‍♂️✌️

I’m sorry that you lost your baby R.E.C.S. For the QOTD, one special moment that I had with one of my reptiles, was when I first held my baby chewie. I had just gotten him from a reptile festival, so he had been in a deli cup for a while. He was jumping all over the place. It was a really funny experience.

Maybe the late breeding and overfeeding prior to your husbandry caused them to lack the ability to recognize offspring.

    Hope you aren't too discouraged!

You have done so much to let people more about these skinks, and that they can reproduce young. They are so pretty, and do look like mini dragons. I am a big fan of yours, and love all of your reptiles. ❤Lizards. Cindy
