@ejscorner5743 Welcome! Thank you for watching/supporting! I hope you enjoy the video!
Hello, reproducing them is not so difficult but they NEED to brumate at least for 4 months between 8°C to 13°C. As they told you the best thing would be let them in the terrarium and providing the terrarium with a land area in which they can burrow. If you cannot guarantee those temperatures in your terrarium you can place them in a box (make sure 5-6 days have passed since their last meal) filled with 15-20 cm of sphagnum moss and soil, the substrate doesn't have to be too much humid, no water should accumulate on the bottom of the box. You can leave a little water bowl in case they need but usually they dont even drink during brumation. Then just make some ventilation holes on the box and leave it in a place at the temperatures I told you above ;)
Thank you so much for the recommendations, friend! It seems thus far that my best option may be to try this method!
That method is what I was recommended to try with my California newts, and considering that these basically seem to be arboreal newts in reptile form, I bet it would work
I was also going to suggest a land area, they may use that as a brumation area? I know a little about these guys and only from what you told us. But based on other reptiles that brumate they dig down / tunnel whatever you want to call it deep into the dirt and just chill until it's time to come up so maybe this is something they do in the wild? It's worth a try and maybe even provide a land area @ all times even if it's smaller. The land area for brumation though I would feel would have to be large enough to accommodate all of them burrowing and idk how you would be able to make that possible within the enclosure you have now ( which looks amazing and seems to keep these guys super happy). I know you mentioned some people brumate them in shoe boxes, like a lot of people do with other reptiles, and if it seems to work for those people who do this then a land area might be the best bet. I know that putting a small fan ( cpu fan) above water can lower the temp so that may be a quick, cheap, and easy way to lower the temp but it probably won't lower it enough but just a few thoughts. Have a great day
I thought of a curtain in front of them during cool down and freaky time then they can’t get spooked by seeing anything and opening curtain for only a bit of time during the day after cooldown
Hi Dayyan! Firstly, name suggestion for your trio: Rexy, Dexy and Lexy 🦎 lol I love your channel 💗 also, for the qotd: for their brumation, from your video it sounds like leaving them in their paludariam with the lights off and sometimes cracking the window slightly may be the safest way to go? I'm also near your area so... yah our winters can have some brutal days lol so the only caveat would be to make sure it's closed on those days. Whatever you choose I know you always do your best and I hope you and your animals continue to thrive 💗🦎🐢🐸
Since Rexy is named after the JP trex why dont you name the others after named trex specimens? Such as Sue or Jane for the female and Stan or Tristan or Buck from TLW for the male. These animals are so beautiful, I hope you're able to breed them next year!
This is one of my absolute favorite builds and herps that you keep! Such peculiar and cautious little creatures 🙂
I’m so glad! I hope you enjoyed the update and I thank you for watching and commenting on the video! That does so much to support my animals and I!
Hey reptiliatus I don’t know if you have considered a chiller but I think it should work making the water cooler would also cool the enclosure a bit. The only thing is chillers are expensive
An aquatic chiller btw
I would just use a fan, wind makes it cooler. Opening a window will be bad and can’t control the intake. The window would be frozen, but different temperatures will come from the inside. Making weird temperatures all around, like drafts. Heating sources, lights, etc.
Wow! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a reptile give live birth before the clips in this video. It’s amazing how easily the little dudes just slip right out! It really reminds you how much evolution screwed over humans when it comes to childbirth.
Dylan I keep shinisaurus myself, I have 2 of them. I’m here in the U.S. but I haven’t started breeding yet because I haven’t found a male to go with my two females. It’s so hard finding a male so I’m glad I have at least get my hands on my two females! You should put out more videos about them!
Super cool you have some man, they are really interesting lizards
I would drain the water feature, take out the shinisaurus and move their enclosure into the cold room you have. Refill the water, run only plant lights on a reduced photoperiod. To be safe you could put a heater in there to come on if it drops below 50 degrees. I'm hoping to get some shinisaurus from you one day so good luck.
Thank you for the suggestions! Fingers crossed! 🙏🏼
Have you looked into any changes in the water in their native range? I don't know much about aquatics, but I know that minor changes in water parameters can have an effect on the entire ecosystem. Could there be a bloom of some other form of plant or animal life that the species might depend on for procreation?
what beautiful little critters - fingers crossed for babies next season!
Thank you so much!
Shorts are year round attire my boy!
Hahaha right on brotha! Thanks for watching bro! 😎
Awesome video Dayyan! I have got the privilege to see these beautiful lizards as some local to where I live owns these! I mean who would want these! Keep trying to reproduce them man!
Thanks a ton! Really appreciate the words of encouragement!
I believe that you can find workarounds to avoid tipping of the water bowl in the winter and similar accidents. For example you can make a raised platform for them in the hibernation box, with the water at the lower level.
These are one of my favorite species, and I always love your videos about them. They’re so magical.
Thank you! I'm so glad! They are super special!
I imagine your home is more modern in ways of heating and insulation that you cant get temps lower than 60s. Depending on your method of heating, rather than opening a window you could add a baffle or restrictor into your heating duct. This would lower the amount of heat entering the basement while also conserving the energy as it would back flow into the ducts for other rooms.
If you can’t get it to get that cold since they are mostly in the water what I used to do with my old fish aquariums is put a chiller it’ll cool down the water a lot more
Thank you for the suggestion! I’ve been looking into aquarium coolers as a potential option.
Hi mate I breed this species readily , if your trying to cycle in the basement and can’t get temps adjust lighting like you said and add a water cooler to get temps down, personally remove the water heater as this is far too consistent and not good for the species as they enjoy fluctuations.
These things are awesome Dayyan! Great job on the care and upkeep of their enclosure(which looks beautiful by the way)! It was also amazingly cool to see one of the Chinese Crocodile Lizards come out of the water at the beginning of the vid. Great video!
I've seen some breeders use open windows to help brumate as well- I saw someone that used an AC tube (I can't think of the actual word 🤦♀️) and have it go to their row of enclosures. One benefit of the cold Canadian winters is that you won't need a chiller! I'm sure you've done the research already- but in the wild, do they lose water levels and plant coverage? Maybe something with a lower water level and a more natural substrate to the environment with a different light cycle? I love these guys, and I know they'll produce for you eventually!
Love you re channel and you're work !
Have you checked the humidity level during the cooling period? Humidity (like the length of daylight changing) is often overlooked. Perhaps research if there are any major changes in humidity in their natural range during brumation. Also, do they seek out shelter like a hollow log or burrow during their natural cooling cycle? Setting up a smaller tank where all the conditions can be adjusted without any errant ambient light or any random disturbance is a great idea. One trick I discovered when breeding a very nervous & difficult to breed finch (Lady Gouldians) was to cover their cages with a fine linen cheesecloth. I kept the room totally dark with only their enclosure light on so I could see in but they couldn’t see (or be distracted by) anything outside and it worked! It’d probably be nearly impossible for you to get another male (breeding loan?) but sometimes competition between males after resting stimulates breeding behavior. The fact they’re viviparous solves any incubation issues; (diapause, etc) however, are they good parents like some lizards or will they consume their young? I’m sure you know the answer to this already but just in case... It’d be tragic if you got them to produce and the neonates became a snack for the parents!
*Good luck.* 👍🏻
You deserve way more subs, Dayyan! Love your content!
Thanks for the love! I appreciate that!
I was thinking about two ideas. Possibly you need some drier land substrate. I don’t know much about their husbandry but it is possible that they move away from water at some point of the year for a drier environment.
The other idea might be more difficult to replicate. In some reptiles, males are induced to breed when there is competition from other males. It could be possible that this occurs with this species. Do the other people who have had success have more than one male? Just my 2¢. Hope you find the answer. These are some amazing animals.
You can also get turtle landings that could be put in with moss and dirt for breeding just trim the plants a bit and put two side by side
Have you tried reducing water levels during your cool down and raising it back to normal or possibly above average levels during your warm up to mimic the monsoon cycle prevalent in their natural environment? Could also look into fluctuations in food availability in a natural setting that may affect breeding behavior.
Good luck with the breeding program, but you're right mimicking. The natural environment will be the best way to get them to breed
It's unfortunate no more can get into Canada! I had hoped to get sone at some point, but I guess not. I have a great enclosure too. You could try separating them when they are not breeding.
You could possible insulate the outside of enclosure and add a portable AC. Also, windows open seems good too. Very awesome lizards and tank setup is amazing.
Great video as always
Thanks so much!
Really love these so cool and unique!!
Thank you! Me too!
Hello great video information Dayyan
Thanks so much!
Very cool. We tried to breed horned lizards for 3 years and weren't successful. They cohabbed happily the whole time but I wondered if maybe separating and reintroducing would've made a difference or would it just stress them out. Idk, good luck!
Such incredible animals , so peaceful and beautiful ❤❤ ,I'm from newfoundland, Canada 🇨🇦 it's freezing here 🙂
Thank you for your support! It gets cold here too in the winter but much too cold for the Shinisaurus haha
They are awesome.
I hope your efforts are successful!
I’d love to have one someday. Feel better soon!
Thank you so much! Fingers crossed!
They are awesome!! What about reducing extraneous sounds?
I’ve been looking to get some heteronotia binoei I reckon they’d make a great addition to your collection
They’re so gorgeous!!!
Thank you!
Maybe put a computer fan or the reptile chiller fan to help get it cooler. Worked for my cave salamanders and I stay in Florida
For my tortoise we run an a/c and it gets cold in the small room I keep a tank and some dirt to hide in and I leave water and take her off food for about 3 weeks before as long as she's proper weight so she doesn't burn calories while brumming and the light is on for 10 hrs A day to simulate day light in winter
I would be very cautious opening a window. In a basement it can get cold enough to freeze the water. Can you insulate the enclosure? Styrofoam around 3 of the side should work. Then use an aquarium chiller., that will lower the ambient temperature in the entire enclosure.
Awsome video. Hope they reproduce soon. Can you say temperature both in Farenhait and Celsius for us, people from Europe who aren't so familiar with Farenhaits?
Adorable dinosaurs 🦕
Thanks!
I wish you all the best, I know you'll get there.
Thank you so much! I really hope so! 🙏🏼
I can't believe those lizards are real man
They are truly amazing!
Beatiful animals!
Thank you very much! 🙏🏼
This species' face reminds me of carnotaurus, so cool
Me too! Thanks for watching!
You could keep the dino theme and name the others Tauro and Spiny
Stinks you haven’t been able to reproduce them yet but I’m confident you’ll figure it out
Thank you so much! Me too!
If you could cool the whole room down, that’s what I would try to do instead of putting them in a cool place. That’s just my opinion I really don’t know.😊❤❤❤ A good video too
Just out of curiosity, are you still running the Felix unit to control that enclosure?
@4:30 - 😂😂😂
😉😉😉
Will she stay this grayish color? What about Gracie?🤷🏻♀️ Rexy and Gracie just sounds cute.
It's very interesting to me the one person you said doesn't cool them and gets babies every year, have you asked what kind of setup and temps they have?
Can the correct ph in the water trigger breeding?
Maybe u can try a water cooler
Have you tried a little bit of Marvin Gaye and some mood lights?
Good idea! 😉
Would you consider these intermediate or expert level reptiles
You know your tree moitor what tipe is it because i like the green mixed with the blue
They are both green tree monitors :)
Ok thnx 👍
🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂👏
hey dayyan do i need to put shinisaurus in brumation
You don’t haveeee to but it is definitely recommended. One way or another they usually become very inactive during the winter but I think it is significantly more beneficial if the temperatures are fairly cold during that 3-4 month period as well!
ok ijust got a pair this summer and was still wondering how but ive got a good idea thanks alot@@Reptiliatus
Name the female Lexi so it Lexi and Rexie
Haha that's a fun suggestion!
they need dirt too buddy allot of it almost like u have to join another one of those cages fill it with dirt and make it dark back there half moist half hard dirt in bam they will breed bro
they need their own pond like pond i know this bc i personally know a very successful breeder in china
