    Hello, reproducing them is not so difficult but they NEED to brumate at least for 4 months between 8°C to 13°C. As they told you the best thing would be let them in the terrarium and providing the terrarium with a land area in which they can burrow. If you cannot guarantee those temperatures in your terrarium you can place them in a box (make sure 5-6 days have passed since their last meal) filled with 15-20 cm of sphagnum moss and soil, the substrate doesn't have to be too much humid, no water should accumulate on the bottom of the box. You can leave a little water bowl in case they need but usually they dont even drink during brumation. Then just make some ventilation holes on the box and leave it in a place at the temperatures I told you above ;)

      Thank you so much for the recommendations, friend! It seems thus far that my best option may be to try this method!

    • @CaptainH8322
      @CaptainH8322 Před 8 měsíci +2

      That method is what I was recommended to try with my California newts, and considering that these basically seem to be arboreal newts in reptile form, I bet it would work

    • @danielleb.7055
      @danielleb.7055 Před 8 měsíci +1

      I was also going to suggest a land area, they may use that as a brumation area? I know a little about these guys and only from what you told us. But based on other reptiles that brumate they dig down / tunnel whatever you want to call it deep into the dirt and just chill until it's time to come up so maybe this is something they do in the wild? It's worth a try and maybe even provide a land area @ all times even if it's smaller. The land area for brumation though I would feel would have to be large enough to accommodate all of them burrowing and idk how you would be able to make that possible within the enclosure you have now ( which looks amazing and seems to keep these guys super happy). I know you mentioned some people brumate them in shoe boxes, like a lot of people do with other reptiles, and if it seems to work for those people who do this then a land area might be the best bet. I know that putting a small fan ( cpu fan) above water can lower the temp so that may be a quick,cheap, and easy way to lower the temp but it probably won't lower it enough but just a few thoughts. Have a great day

      I thought of a curtain in front of them during cool down and freaky time then they can’t get spooked by seeing anything and opening curtain for only a bit of time during the day after cooldown

    Hi Dayyan! Firstly, name suggestion for your trio: Rexy, Dexy and Lexy 🦎 lol I love your channel 💗 also, for the qotd: for their brumation, from your video it sounds like leaving them in their paludariam with the lights off and sometimes cracking the window slightly may be the safest way to go? I'm also near your area so... yah our winters can have some brutal days lol so the only caveat would be to make sure it's closed on those days. Whatever you choose I know you always do your best and I hope you and your animals continue to thrive 💗🦎🐢🐸

    Since Rexy is named after the JP trex why dont you name the others after named trex specimens? Such as Sue or Jane for the female and Stan or Tristan or Buck from TLW for the male. These animals are so beautiful, I hope you're able to breed them next year!

    Hey reptiliatus I don’t know if you have considered a chiller but I think it should work making the water cooler would also cool the enclosure a bit. The only thing is chillers are expensive

  • @bile897
    @bile897 Před 8 měsíci +2

    I would just use a fan, wind makes it cooler. Opening a window will be bad and can’t control the intake. The window would be frozen, but different temperatures will come from the inside. Making weird temperatures all around, like drafts. Heating sources, lights, etc.

    Dylan I keep shinisaurus myself, I have 2 of them. I’m here in the U.S. but I haven’t started breeding yet because I haven’t found a male to go with my two females. It’s so hard finding a male so I’m glad I have at least get my hands on my two females! You should put out more videos about them!

  • @jason.patenaude
    @jason.patenaude Před 8 měsíci +3

    I would drain the water feature, take out the shinisaurus and move their enclosure into the cold room you have. Refill the water, run only plant lights on a reduced photoperiod. To be safe you could put a heater in there to come on if it drops below 50 degrees. I'm hoping to get some shinisaurus from you one day so good luck.

    Have you looked into any changes in the water in their native range? I don't know much about aquatics, but I know that minor changes in water parameters can have an effect on the entire ecosystem. Could there be a bloom of some other form of plant or animal life that the species might depend on for procreation?

    I believe that you can find workarounds to avoid tipping of the water bowl in the winter and similar accidents. For example you can make a raised platform for them in the hibernation box, with the water at the lower level.

    I imagine your home is more modern in ways of heating and insulation that you cant get temps lower than 60s. Depending on your method of heating, rather than opening a window you could add a baffle or restrictor into your heating duct. This would lower the amount of heat entering the basement while also conserving the energy as it would back flow into the ducts for other rooms.

  • @marcogonzalez845

    If you can’t get it to get that cold since they are mostly in the water what I used to do with my old fish aquariums is put a chiller it’ll cool down the water a lot more

    Hi mate I breed this species readily , if your trying to cycle in the basement and can’t get temps adjust lighting like you said and add a water cooler to get temps down, personally remove the water heater as this is far too consistent and not good for the species as they enjoy fluctuations.

    I've seen some breeders use open windows to help brumate as well- I saw someone that used an AC tube (I can't think of the actual word 🤦‍♀️) and have it go to their row of enclosures. One benefit of the cold Canadian winters is that you won't need a chiller! I'm sure you've done the research already- but in the wild, do they lose water levels and plant coverage? Maybe something with a lower water level and a more natural substrate to the environment with a different light cycle? I love these guys, and I know they'll produce for you eventually!

  • @davidvento5481
    @davidvento5481 Před 8 měsíci +1

    Have you checked the humidity level during the cooling period? Humidity (like the length of daylight changing) is often overlooked. Perhaps research if there are any major changes in humidity in their natural range during brumation. Also, do they seek out shelter like a hollow log or burrow during their natural cooling cycle? Setting up a smaller tank where all the conditions can be adjusted without any errant ambient light or any random disturbance is a great idea. One trick I discovered when breeding a very nervous & difficult to breed finch (Lady Gouldians) was to cover their cages with a fine linen cheesecloth. I kept the room totally dark with only their enclosure light on so I could see in but they couldn’t see (or be distracted by) anything outside and it worked! It’d probably be nearly impossible for you to get another male (breeding loan?) but sometimes competition between males after resting stimulates breeding behavior. The fact they’re viviparous solves any incubation issues; (diapause, etc) however, are they good parents like some lizards or will they consume their young? I’m sure you know the answer to this already but just in case... It’d be tragic if you got them to produce and the neonates became a snack for the parents!
    *Good luck.* 👍🏻

    I was thinking about two ideas. Possibly you need some drier land substrate. I don’t know much about their husbandry but it is possible that they move away from water at some point of the year for a drier environment.
    The other idea might be more difficult to replicate. In some reptiles, males are induced to breed when there is competition from other males. It could be possible that this occurs with this species. Do the other people who have had success have more than one male? Just my 2¢. Hope you find the answer. These are some amazing animals.

    @carlhoode9183 Před 8 měsíci +1

    Have you tried reducing water levels during your cool down and raising it back to normal or possibly above average levels during your warm up to mimic the monsoon cycle prevalent in their natural environment? Could also look into fluctuations in food availability in a natural setting that may affect breeding behavior.

  • @kimfry5997

    I would be very cautious opening a window. In a basement it can get cold enough to freeze the water. Can you insulate the enclosure? Styrofoam around 3 of the side should work. Then use an aquarium chiller., that will lower the ambient temperature in the entire enclosure.
