Nice to see you here, man :)
And I totally agree with works as it should. -Crap- FreeSync = crappy sticker that guaranties exactly nothing. There is no minimum requirement, means even 59-60 range can be labled with CrapSync. The sad part is there are quite a few "narrow" range monitors out there.
I am "fortunate" to have one of the more expensive CrapSync monitors with the crap experience - Samsung CF971 (paid ~800 euro for it couple of years ago) and a GTX1070.
Guess what - everything works great until I try to enable CrapSync. The issues range from flickering to just a black screen depending on the app/game and the mode (full screen/windowed). The funny thing is that black screen (GPU and monitor cannot connect) occurs even when enabling the adaptivesync.
Bottom line, AS A CONSUMER, I'd be willing to pay a a bi more just to have the tech certified to provide desired experience.

In my opinion Tim is wrong calling monitors with narrow adaptive sync fps range as "perfectly ok" (simply it doesn't adhere to G-Sync standards, and those with the sticker do, so you pay premium to have that covered... It's called capitalism), but on the other hand Nvidia's perquisite that the monitor should have adapt-sync enabled by default is the most stupid requirement i have ever heard. But if manufactures simply change that default option in the menu and then pay Nvidia for the sticker, then they will magically become G-Sync compatible. That is total BS indeed.

@@neosabre False, the lowest I've seen a G-sync Panel go on it's advertised adaptive refreshrate is 30.
@UnderdesertCamelX - Then you didn't do your research or got unlucky, my "old" Freesync display which costs $350 was perfect without any issues what so ever, no flickering or anything.
G-sync panel with the SAME TN Panel?(The cheapest 1440p G-sync display I could get) was $600 and does have flickering below 60 hertz. 2 of these displays do the same thing, Predator XB271HU.
G-Sync has no guarantee despite Nvidia's claims, oh also the G-sync display had absolutely unacceptable colors on both displays which would have prompted me to make an RMA request except after changing multiple individual color brightness, contrast, and gamma for each Red, Green, and Blue channel to get rid of the total red wash (Black was RED, Grey was RED) it's disgusting but after all of the above values being adjusted individually it looks like my "old" display, the only 2 settings that are the same across all RGB channels is the gamma/brightness on the Red and Green Channel. - Literally everything else is different because like I said I had to manually edit ALL variables to get a decent image.

For those buying a monitor in 2021 and wonder if HDMI is supported by now:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10 series (Pascal) and higher GPUs supports VESA Adaptive-Sync variable refresh rate over the DisplayPort 1.2a standard.
NVIDA GeForce GTX 16 series/RTX 20 series (Turing) and higher will support variable refresh rate over HDMI on displays which support this feature over HDMI 2.1.

Yes, Freesync (VESA Adaptive Sync) is an open standard. Pretty much any manufacture can implement it royalty free.... this also means there is no control over the product quality put out by manufacturers in their implementation... where as Gsync is a closed propriety format and engineering.... monitor manufactured can only put out products certified by nVidia and those companies need to buy and license from nVidia to implement it.
It's not reallt a problem CAUSED by freesync... it's a problem that exists simply because there are no stringent controls over manufactureres.
That being said this is a song that has been performed in computing history time and time again. While a closed form of licensed engineering allows for higher quality products.... the excessive cost broght about by licensing and stringent controls when it is forces to compete with an open standard causes the proprietary technology to die... and that is what is happening with Gsync now. The genie was let out of the bottle as soon as a competing open standard cam on the field... and nothing nVidia can do can put the genie back in that bottle. Gsync is effectively dead.

Tim, did you consider that FreeSync monitors could get more expensive because Nvidia might charge a license fee for each sold FreeSync monitor which Nvidia approves? It wouldn't be the first time that Nvidia does a scam like this, they did so for SLI, they made every motherboard-company (ASUS, MSI, ASRock, Gigabyte, EVGA) pay a license fee for SLI per sold motherboard which the customer who bought the motherboard had to pay.
So it might be bad for AMD-customers that Nvidia now allows FreeSync to be used, depending on whether or not Nvidia charges for a license again.
We should also consider this: it might increase the marketschare for Nvidia even more and decrease the market share for AMD even more. This is problematic if we end up with only one company left which makes GPU's. We already pay the price for AMD not having the finances to compete, that is why Nvidia has a monopoly on the high end and that is why Nvidia charges so much for mid-tier cards like the RX 2060 - RX 2080.
In short, just calling it a win for gamers seems premature to me. Time will tell.

G-Sync "compatable" is far less strict in it's certification than AMD is with FreeSync. Also those "issues" that are described are the result of nVidia's poor optimized software for adaptive sync in general. I'm getting a bit sick of people holding up nVidia as being the best with everything, everywhere and hanging on their every word without looking further into things.

Acer XFA240 worked great, driver installed and G-Sync enabled on reboot. Didn't have to do anything. Like others have said, the Nvidia validated panels enable Freesync by default and I didn't see an option to toggle this in the OSD. Not bad for $200

@@GregoryCunningham You're pretty much screwed anyways when not making these products yourself. These things are sold by companies which only goal is to make money.
So you either get screwed by potentially faulty adaptive-sync implementation (no matter reputation since certification is a lot more loose), being charged extra for certification (which makes it more likely you get a fully functional product) and be locked into buying a certain brand gpu, or you get no adaptive sync and run into tearing like there's no tomorrow.
You can't win without paying something or playing roulette and there's no way to dodge that bullet. Freesync 2 is probably a better product if it works but with the vast majority of monitors out there you may still end up with a bad one (even if reviews are good) and potentially (read; depending on where you live) get no support whatsoever (USA is notorious for shit like that).

what also has to be considered, is that there are Methods to up the qualitiy on freesync and thus the new G sync experience. The first is CRU, which allows you to Change the freesync operateing range. There are a few Monitors that somehow Show defects with the new Gsync but work better with a modified Range. F.e. the first AUO Panels with 1440p 144Hz IPS like the Asus PG 279Q. On factory Settings ist 35 - 90Hz and has various defects on the new G sync like flickering. But if you upp the range to 60 to 144 it works just fine. The 2. Option is even better, but you have to be lucky to find Drivers for it. There are custom Drivers out there, that Change your freesync range. Basicly does the same as CRU but is a bit les fiddly after you set it up. Just Google if there are custom Drivers for your monitor. Might work wonders
