A class act. He offered this to the Searchers whilst on tour in Australia, they turned it down only for Peter & Gordon who heard it in the next dressing room who asked if they could record it, the rest is history.

Del told me once that he regards this as the best song he ever wrote. He also said he deeply regretted giving it to P&G in Australia in 1964. Not because they did not do a good version but it will always be known as their song not his own. I have four versions here by Del as he was never happy with how he recorded it until he did the version with Jeff Lynne on his final album.

Super story! I've long wondered about the things you describe here. I'm a Michigan guy and made a special point of getting off the hwy west of Grand Rapids to take a look at his memorial plaque. It was my way of paying homage to this RnR legend.

Thank you and I knew Del very well because he came to Australia many times because like Roy Orbison, his own country had virtually forgotten about him. Nice man but had some issues but man could he write a song. There are still many unreleased songs by him that will probably never see the light of day because of legal tangles. His last concert was filmed in Sydney and is on CZcams and he was playing to packed house back in 1989.@@j.d.snyder4466

In 1964 when Del Shannon toured Australia he met Peter and Gordon. Both of them expressed interest in his music and were blown when they heard this song. Del asked them if they'd like to record this song and both of them agreed. This was the 1st song for them that wasn't written by the Beatles, and a major hit for them. This proves that Del Shannon was a great song writer that has written songs for other artists. This particular song is absolutely wonderful, especially when it's written by a great talent like Del Shannon.

nothing strange about it, esso. Peter & gordan's version was great too, so just a matter of taste, and maybe which version you heard first, how old you were when you heard it, what was going on in your llife. that's the great thing about music. It doesn't really stand alone, it weaves its way into our memories and pulls all the pieces together.

This was always a great song even though Del Shannon wrote it. Growing up as a kid in the 60's the version I was familiar with was the one from Peter and Gordon. It wasn't until 1976 when I bought the Vintage Years LP two record set by Del Shannon that I actually heard his version. Before his death in 1990 he was working on his last CD when they 1st started coming out. One of those tracks from the Rock On CD was I Go To Pieces. That particular track was redone and sounded better than his 1st version that was recorded in 1964. It's a great song and one of his masterpieces.
