That's nice your board can do that. I discovered a different way to do it with my Tascam MSR16. I only have the inserts on the board and I have a 24 channel board that I use the first 16 channels for the recorder. The I(nput) is coming from the output of the deck for each channel and the O(utput) for each channel is feeding an RCA patch panel. What that does is when I have a microphone plugged into channel 1, the channels can be patched without moving the microphone and the level will not change going to each input of the deck. All of the EQ settings are feeding the input of the deck and only the output of the deck is feeding the faders for each channel. The Trim Pot is the level control going into the board. I didn't know how well it would work until I tried it and it does an amazing job. Thank you for posting this.

Awesome video Sammy! Grabbed an old Hi8 camcorder recently to record my videos with and stumbled upon the DA-88 doing my research. running a non-vlz 1604 so this was the perfect video to see pop up. that unit is massive!
The DA88 is pretty massive for 8 tracks - heavy too! It’s definitely worth a try in my opinion.

If you keep your eyes open you can find sweet deals on this old stuff! These machines find a funny place between not enough modern features or track count and not being real “analog” tape machines. I just think they are fun and I’m to poor for the expensive stuff ha ha! Thanks for stopping by!
Hi what do you mean the analog card ? I can see 10 for sale on eBay and all of them at the back are full with connections and no empty spaces for extras to go ? Don’t the analog card come as standard ?
You're changing the game man. If was 15 again and I had stumbled upon this video instead of the infamous Mac DeMarco "get a tape machine get out of the DAW", I'd be sitting next to a DA-88 instead of a portastudio 424 mk3. Also, you've literally got all the information that's needed without being over technical or anything boring or too drawn out. I originally clicked on the vid because I'm curious about switching over to the ADAT(or whatever) format, but I ended up learning so much. I can't believe I never knew that inserts could function as direct outs, that little comment just changed everything. Ill have to pick up a 38/88 sooner than later because those things are going to become hot again. Keep up the good work.
Man I wish I could get my hands on a 424 but so pricey! Being broke is what got me trying to find alternatives and when I found recording machines that ran on camcorder tapes I was sold. Always remember to make music with what you have- you probably have made some sweet stuff on the mk3. My dream machine is a Tascam 388 or 688 maybe one day but till then digital tape it is!

@@sammyandthehi8s110 I was a bit early on the cassette resurgence and I actually got my hands on it for 200$! I was being sort of young and naive at the time but I honestly couldn’t imagine working without the limitations of the machine anymore, its crucial to the process. Now that I've grown up a bit more, I couldn't ever see myself shelling out serious dosh for musical equipment again (well maybe for a 8 track reel to reel...fostex...). Not to mention that finding a cheap piece of gear that works is a rush in of itself. My guitar came from a bin for 40$ and I like it way better than any others Ive tried since. You probably get what I mean when I say that knowing the gear, your instruments, having a deep relationship with them, knowing how to push it, or when to lay off, that's more valuable than anything else. Of course the only way to get that is time... so keep on strumming, keep on hitting the red button, rewinding the tape... etc etc you know.

Love your perspective of getting stuff for cheap and just using it. That’s the trap I have fallen into in the past - thinking gear was the reason my work sucked. When actually I needed to take time and continue to develop the craft.
I also love the rush of finding cheap gear for a steal! The camcorders I use to film this stuff I got from a thrift store for $10 to $17 ha ha

I buy the broken machines on ebay and Reverb and make a profit selling them. Lots of people still like them and would like to get away from the computer. Its fun stuff and there are a LOT of machines out there with low hours on the heads.

You are a fan of Mackie 1604 VLZ, because you haven’t been using it long enough yet. After using several Mackie mixers since early 1990’s I must say that only the first CR1604 I sold in still usable condition. Afterwards all mixers were only replaced by the new ones. I attempted some repairs prior to disposing them, but unfortunately the problems were just reappearing. The Achilles’ Foot of Mackie mixers are ribbon connectors which somehow remind of the old EIDE cables used in old Pentium computers. So now when I see anybody with a Mackie mixer I directly feel sorry for him... Good luck! Nice channel by the way!

I have one with the sync card in perfect condition for sale. Used only a few times and bought as a backup.
I would have use a DB25 to TRS Jack so to have +4dBu symmetrical signal. It is also more convenient. Thank you for sharing this demo. Cheers from Canada.
Very true- that’s a better and cleaner way to connect the Tascam DA88 to a mixer! Those rca cables where the only ones I had on hand so you caught me being lazy ha ha!

Those people on the forums are salesmen for product companies real musicians that have distribution companies and know the income from streaming know that making music is worthless. i had 25.000 streams of my music and earned $4 now think who in their right mind would spend money on expensive gear for $4.

You might be interested in alternative to ADAT/DTRS, fostex made 4 units called the d80/90/108/160. They are 8 track hard disk recorders from the 90s and are slightly smaller than your da88. A good option to keep a home studio with all its outboard equipment going if your tape machines fail. They are around the same price as the 38/88

Hey Robert, this was filmed the day it was published on Aug 20, 2021 (couple months ago). I do use old camcorders and early 90s equipment for graphics and transitions. It’s always more interesting to take a different approach when you make anything creatively! You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make cool stuff! At this point in time, those old machines are totally unreliable, need constant maintenance, and the tapes and parts are unavailable. A cheap computer and free recording software is your best bet. Take it from. I've used these machines for years, and they are now nothing but trouble.
Tapes unavailable? I still use a Tascam 424 MKIII, a DA-38, and an 8-track echo unit. There are hundreds of tapes for all of these on eBay and Mercari. Same applies to MiniDV and DVCAM and Hi8 camcorders, too!
