Could you be deficient in vitamin D? Find out why this happens, and what to do.

In this video, I want to discuss the reasons for the deficiency of vitamin D in many people and what foods you can eat to fix this.
Our bodies need about 1200 IUs of vitamin D per day. It might go up or down, depending on different factors. For example, are you stressed out? This could actually be one of the reasons for the deficiency of vitamin D.
    Foods high in vitamin D:
    • Cod liver oil
    • Fatty fish
    • Butter
    • Cheese
    • Cream
    • Raw-milk
Most people get vitamin D from the sun.
    A few vitamin D benefits:
    • Supports bone health
    • Supports the immune system
Why, all of a sudden, does everyone have a deficiency in vitamin D?
    • MDs have only recently been testing for vitamin D
    • People don't go out in the sun as much
    • Low-cholesterol diets-sun converts cholesterol into vitamin D
    • Lack of bile-without bile you can't absorb vitamin D (Learn more about bile: www.drberg.com/blog/bile-a-vi...)
    • Stress-cortisol
Vitamin D works naturally together with vitamin F. The function of vitamin D is to take the calcium from the stomach and put it into the blood. The purpose of vitamin F is to take calcium from the blood and put it into the skin tissues. That is why vitamin F is a protective mechanism against skin problems.
You don't just need vitamin D. You also need vitamin F to keep the whole process working. It's important to understand this process and to make sure to consume omega-3 fatty acids in your diet to help keep your body out of trouble.

      Dr. Eric Berg DC
I have a question for you about vitamin D deficiency. My labs, six months ago vitamin D was a 6%. Then my Dr. prescribed 12 weeks of D 50,000IU units once a week. Six months later I am at 8%. I have a Dr. appointment this Thursday and I don’t know why my Vit D is still low. Also, I take over the counter vitamin D3 5,000IU daily. After viewing this video I’m wondering if I don’t have enough bile producing to break down my vitamin D? Would you please advise me on what to ask my Dr. to look for. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

We test only when clinical symptoms indicate, the results are over 70%. The amount they are deficient by, I cannot quantify as the test results I see vary and I have never performed a statistical analysis. Deficient for our purposes is enough to begin supplementation or investigate dietary intervention.
The symptoms we are testing deficiency for are typically Joint pain and recurrent/chronic ligament pain or recurrent fractures/sprains ligament instability, it appears to be positively correlated with these conditions.

Barry Tedder Very interesting! Too bad you can't become your own scientist and analyze this stuff, I think it would be a ground-breaking piece of material for others to read. I'm very interested in all this. I recently had a bad bout with allergies and asthma (that I thought was due to my acid reflux / GERD). But the more I delved deeper, the more I realize that all three of those were symptoms of the main cause, which I now to be deficiencies in certain vitamins, particularly vitamin D! I work nights and so I was not able to get much sun for the last few years I've been working at this job. When I'm not at work, I'm sleeping in a darkened room. I also have some joint pain as well. Mind you, I'm only 33 years old, very fit and strong male, I was lifting weights 2 times a week and doing hardcore intense cardio 3 times a week. Was around 6'1 and 175 lbs. very solid muscle too. Over the last two months it's gone to heck because I couldn't lift weights without feeling like I was gonna die from not being able to catch my breath after each set. I'm just now starting to feel better after about a week of getting Vitamin D (6,000 IU per day).

Vitamin D3 (the most common form) has a half-life measured in weeks, so a large weekly dose is fine. Most recent research suggests 30,000 IU per day is worthwhile with no sign of toxicity.. In the elderly, to prevent Vit D from depositing calcium on bone as it does when young but when elderly, deposits calcium on blood-vessel linings, the established vitamin recently proved to be the right path, is Vitamin K2, at least 180 mcg/day. Some of the info in the video is outdated.

All together 5 years including tandem breastfeeding and breastfeeding my entire pregnancy. I support breastfeeding and so happy I did but ladies be mindful and supplement not only your breastfed baby with vit D but also yourselves, no one mentions this but it's so important and will save you a lot of unnecessary health problems.

Cod live is also high in Vitamin A which can block VD3. For this reason it is no longer recommended as a source of VD3 by experts. Two VA molecules emulate a weak VD3 response which fools the body into thinking the VA is VD3 - but it's not and won't function as VD3 which is a powerful hormone. Don't use Cod Liver oil to get your VD3 - seriously a very bad idea. Go the the Vitamin D council and search on Cod Liver Oil, or just google it.

I've had similar experiences. Some of my test results have been borderline.. Say... Just 1 point out of 43 away from deficiency, and yet they'll tell me I'm "Fine. No problem" and not show me the numbers until I push for it.
Well, why not tell me, and help me now, before things get even worse?
Secondly, different labs use different "reference ranges". This means one lab will say you're deficient if your score is say 25, but another will only mark you as deficient if you're 22 or below.
Some people say the reference ranges have been changed over time, to hide the fact that more and more people have too low/ high numbers (this accusation is more prevalent in countries with free health care, where the government is under pressure to save money on health care).
Or they may do the opposite, and adjust reference ranges so that more people are diagnosed with a certain problem, which leads to more people being prescribed drugs, or being diagnosed with an illness that politicians or charities want to use.
It's good to ask for a print out of test results for yourself. I don't expect most doctors to be too happy about it. Most don't seem to like curious patients. But, imho, if they are good, they'll see it as a positive thing.

You seem to know your stuff already, being vegan for such a short time. I watched some of your videos. You're doing good, but I have yet to see you eat a nut. Heh heh!
Vitamin F = Linolic acid... raw nuts, seeds, legumes, and flaxseed oil. Walnut and grape seed oil are also good sources but I just don't like them.
I also take Spirulina. Have been doing so for over 10 years and it keeps my iron levels from dropping further. I have an inherited blood disorder that makes me seriously anaemic.
Gosh, I sound like the unhealthiest vegan. LOL

    •  Před 8 lety

Franka Sensale I do not eat nuts because of their extremely high omega 6 to 3 content. I try to balance my omega 3 to 6 ratios by eating a lot of flax and chia. Hemp is also okay, but the rest of seeds and nuts are super high in 6:3, sometimes 4000:1 !

I love nuts. Can't live without them. Although I've just discovered I no longer like Brazil nuts and am allergic to raw hazlenuts.
Ideally, your diet should contain equal proportions of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (no more than 3 parts omega-6 to one part omega-3). But I suppose you know that already.
I learned the hard way... got too thin and am now increasing fats in my diet to help absorb the high doses of vitamin D3 (vegan). Osteomalacia (adult Rickets). *OUCH!
You're very lean. Looks good on you but don't over-do it at the gym and look after your shoulder. x

Apart from the weight loss, which was not my motive, I've noticed an all round improvement in my health. Also, my freckle "red-head" skin isn't burning in the sun, although I've also cut out sun screen. Another unexpected thing is that people say I appear younger now.

Leonard Marder I believe the ideal ratio of omega 6: omega 3 is 4:1. Most people have ratios that are too high in omega 6. Omega 6 isn't inherently evil. It just needs to be kept under control.

Wikipedia says Cholecalciferol is: Use as rodenticide[edit]
Rodents are somewhat more susceptible to high doses than other species, and cholecalciferol has been used in poison bait for the control of these pests. It has been claimed that the compound is less toxic to non-target species. However, in practice it has been found that use of cholecalciferol in rodenticides represents a significant hazard to other animals, such as dogs and cats. "Cholecalciferol produces hypercalcemia, which results in systemic calcification of soft tissue, leading to renal failure, cardiac abnormalities, hypertension, CNS depression, and GI upset. Signs generally develop within 18-36 hr of ingestion and can include depression, anorexia, polyuria, and polydipsia."[20]
In New Zealand, possums have become a significant pest animal, and cholecalciferol has been used as the active ingredient in lethal gel baits and cereal pellet baits "DECAL" for possum control. The LD50 is 16.8 mg/kg, but only 9.8 mg/kg if calcium carbonate is added to the bait.[21][22]
Kidneys and heart are target organs.[23]

Good presentation! Kudos about digestive enzymes implicated!
Would like to see research done on those who also have GERD, and mineral deficiencies[ mostly not mentioned in mainstream medicine].
And the good oils. And bile system issues.
Vit. D acts like a hormone in the body. Different forms of D: D2 must be converted in order to use it, and D3, which is immediately usable.
It's important to get tested using a 25[OH]D blood test to learn levels, and periodically recheck it. Functional levels and Therapeutic levels are disputed, but, therapeutic levels might well be around 75 to 100 [not the 30 to 50 suggested by more conservative entities].
But he seems to miss: that it's critically important to clean up our lives:
We live in a soup of many thousands of hormone-interrupting chemicals. They interrupt the body's use of, or block conversion to usable forms of, all hormones...including insulin, sex hormones, thyroid, etc.
There are several steps between the body getting or making hormones, and the body using them functionally; any of those steps interrupted, can make a functional deficiency, while still showing "normal" on lab tests...which in today's mainstream medicine, results in many ills never getting diagnosed, never treated, or worse, treating symptoms wrongly.
Sure, most modern folks also are, effectively, 'cave dwellers'..but, that story doesn't play well, for those living in tropical areas who are out in the sun all day, yet still deficient.
So far, I have yet to hear of ANY research which seriously investigates hormone interrupting chemicals' effects, beyond cursory hypothetical mention. Yet, those have such far-reaching implications for ASD, MS, Cholesterol problems, dental malformations, gender identification issues, immune disorders, cardiovascular and cancer ills, etc.
Also, why have Docs stopped diagnosing Rickets, probably over 60 years ago, that DX almost stopped being made. Kids with "growing pains", parents were rarely, if ever, told to feed kids dark green leafy veggies; some told to eat more dairy products. In the 1960's, it got popular for Docs to Rx Calcium by itself...very bad, because women doing that, had huge increases in heart attacks. WHY the focus on calcium, especially since magnesium is as, important, if not more important?
